People are entitled to their own opinions. But, one word that I'm seeing being thrown around by some on the web to describe some of the music on VTV is amateurish . Am I missing something? The music of VTV to me is very mature, thorough, thoughtful, deep, intricate, purposeful, and very crafty. I don't know based on what type of perception that some people are coming up with the word amateurish. If it was just one person who used this word, I wouldn't care to mention it and wouldn't care in general, but it's a word used by several (won't mention names or websites to avoid off topic discussions) . Someone just recently described the music of Hosanna as amateurish. Huh? Can anyone throw some light onto this? Does anyone else feel this way? No Raj.. This mix of the Nadaswaram has the feel. In the case of 'Nedukitten', it has Thavil and other acoustic folk percussion instruments and Nadaswaram is the lead instrument other than vocals. And in Omana Penne, it has Logic loops more and Nadaswaram is mixed and processed in a great way to get an international feel for the song. Shridhar's comments on how AR's music is theatrical really struck me. The word theatrical is really a good, broad descriptive term to describe many of ARR's compositions. ...mostly recently Mannipaya being a great example of such a style and structure. The songs Mannipaya or Dil Ka Rishta from Yuvvraaj nicely fit the theatrical descriptor and further remind me of how much potential and scope AR would have in scoring for a Disney movie, whose soundtracks are very much in line with a song like Mannipaya or Dil Ka Rishta. The English song that AR scored for the movie Kisna...is also a great example. If a Disney Director ever picked up ARR for composer for one of their splendid animation movies, for example, I think they would be extremely happy with the results, and I could totally see AR doing a fantastic job with the music. ARR has used this technique many times before, and I love it. Forget this technique.. Even otherwise also, ARR had been modifying natural vocals to add beauty to the song! Eg: Mg Sreekumar's vocals in Chinna Chinna MAzhaithuli( En Swasa Katre), YESUDAS's vocals in Pachaikiligal( Yesudas did not like it! It was controversial then) etc.. Sadhana Sargam, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shankar Mahadevan, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Hariharan, Madhushree, Minmini all sound the BEST in ARR songs! Why?? Because, ARR makes a lot of modifications to the originally recorded voice!! Though I got lyrics translation of the songs.. can someone please tell what language are they in? I am trying my best, with the knowledge of trade mark Rahman style of composing, to figure out which of these tracks were by Rahman. Can anyone help me? So far, i can tell the following rahman's hand prints are all over it. 1) The Road Goes on (Most likely) 2) Saruman (maybe) 3) The Seige of the city of Kings 4) Flight to the Ford (maybe) 5) The Final Battle There maybe others where he has contributed. The Road Goes on, is a beautiful song, so is, Now and for always. Nicely conceived melody. Whosoever composed this melody is heartfelt and wonderful. And the T-shirt he wears on that video has written something like KM on it, which is his music school and also one oh his studio's name. But what creates doubt in me is one who posted that video has another video on which ARR sleeps on bed. Which seems like insulting him. So there is chance for being a fake one too. contd... His performances with connoisseurs such as- Ustad Zakir Hussein, Shankar Mahadevan, Selvaganesh and U Srinivas are known to enthrall the audiences from across the globe and commenting on the on- stage chemistry between maestros, Sivamani adds, “It is always a new experience. They bring magic onto the stage. Having been part of the music for movies like Rang De Basanti, Taal, Lagaan and Kabul Express, to name a few, one wonders what gives him more creative satisfaction - live performance or movies? I enjoy everything which is close to music. I feel I am like a lamp and I am here to throw light around, says the drummer, who also plays instruments like octoban, darbuka, udukai and kanjira. Although the musician who started playing drums at the age of 10, grew up observing his father and other drummers, he feels that he picked up his own style over the years. His son Kumaran, who is studying in a city-based school, is also into drumming and Sivamani admits he loves jamming with him. Speaking on the current trend of music, he says, Music is like a clock, whatever is left behind will eventually come back. It's the age of remake and remixes. After the success of his last individual album Mahaleela, which released last year, he's currently working on his upcoming solo album Anand. Sivamani regards singer S P Balasubramanium as his godfather. There are certain things which he learnt from him and practices in his life. He taught me to respect others, be humble and let go off your ego, he asserts. Indeed Bro.. The happiness of enjoying a work and getting a very nice output is just out of world! Do more for us.. :) And when you mix also, (just for the BGM rips, not a Pro Mix) if you are using a very good editing or mixing software, pan the 5th and 6th channels to extreme left and right and the other two to the middle, say half of the previous setting OR according to your ears until it gets a surround feel, then the bass channel to the center. it does give a beautiful surround feel in stereo. And to make karaokes.. just like you make the bgm's, like remove the center channel of the songs in the movie DVD's which has the voice only (a capella) and mix the other 5 channels like how I said or using your logic, but with a surround feel.. [arr] I make music with whatever is available - Sivamani | Semi ARR
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Divine-Rhythms/548849/ Sivamani, who turned 50 yesterday, speaks about drumming, movies, music and more He held the drumsticks at the age of seven. He knows A R Rahman from the time the latter was 10-years-old. He grew up watching his father playing drums. Just when you think, that this is what he always wanted to be, he gives a modest reply, It wasn't me. It was God who wanted me to make music and give joy to people. That's Sivamani, percussionist par excellence, who turned 50 yesterday. Known for creating music with anything and everything, even between this particular interview, sitting at the restaurant, he produces drum-like sounds using nothing but the tissue paper holder. It happens all the time at public places. People come to me with requests of playing something for them and I can't say no to them. So, I make music with whatever is available, he says. Re: [arr] BLUE BGMs - 31 Voiceless BGMs
Very much effort taken, Bro.. Words are not enough to thank you! :) You are right. It's so difficult to rip the BGM's of an action movie. Voices would be polluted ones.. Even in those A Cappelas the instruments' voices are mixed together. So I guess it's the problem of the final mix for the DVD's. There are so many leakages. But there were some places where we could have avoided the entire BGM's with the noises. Some parts are unwanted I feel. Some tricks can be used while editing and mixing like editing out the similar portions on either channel and copy pasting the other one which doesn't have the noise. Also editing out the noise parts and then applying the cross fade to avoid the glitch when you join the rest part. Likewise so many... It's fun.. using ideas, thus editing and mixing all these BGM's.. right? :) Keep up your great works, Bro. Besties for the next project on your mind! :) Love . On the 28th of November, 11 of us(fans of AR) took time out of our routine to Donate lunch to kids at an Orphanage in Chennai and spent some time there. This was initiated in fond memory of the Great sound engineer Mr. H. Sridhar, who passed away an year back. The orphanage was a small one and managed by a trust by name, Kaakum Karangal. There were a total of 60 people taken care by the trust of which there were 30 Boys, 20 Girls and 10 elderly people. We sponsored the day's lunch for them and it was a special meal with sweets, and other savories. We went there by about 1 in the afternoon. We thought we could serve, but as it turned out they had a completely different system of service, a highly disciplined and military style; the children were made to sit in 4 rows with plates in their hand. And the food was kept at one end with 2 elderly people serving it. The kids took their turns, in a very orderly fashion, to get the food. They were served by the elders. After filling their plates they sat in their place. Once they settled with the food, they gave a 2 minutes' prayer, all reciting aloud. It was so good to witness 60 people saying out the prayer aloud. Sent out so much positive vibes. :) After that they sat there, happily eating. We could see that joy in their eyes and that was joy to us. Food filling their stomach and our hearts.. This was the perfect way to pay tribute to a genius like Sridhar sir, spreading joy in his name.. He continues to live in all our Memories.. May his soul RIP. [arr] A slice of Rahman magic for TN Police
http://bit.ly/8nONMs CHENNAI: Oscar-winning music composer A R Rahman will soon compose a theme song for the Tamil Nadu Police as part of its 150-year celebrations. Rahman, who is currently abroad, is expected to begin work on this project once he returns home. An exhibition of various equipment used for road safety and traffic management is also being organised. During the valedictory function of the seminar, a coffee-table book chronicling the 150 years of the Tamil Nadu Police, ‘The Pioneer Peacekeepers’ will be released by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. [arr] Lyricist Vaali crosses 5000 songs! | Semi ARR
http://bit.ly/5csEJI The ever-youthful legendary lyricist Vaali is surely a man to be celebrated. He has just finished writing his 5000th song for Shankar’s ‘Endhiran’. Whatta massive achievement, we say! “Little beetle leaf, beetle nut, few papers and a pen this is what I need to start writing a poem,” says the great man naively. “My childhood passion was to become an artist. There was a popular artist called Maali who was working in Vikatan then. One of my close friends named me Vaali after that artist and told that I would become popular like the artist one day,” revealed the poet whose original name is Rangarajan. It was TMS who invited Vaali to Chennai and cinema. Vaali became a household name when MGR was in his career’s peak. “I penned ‘Machchana’ Pathingala while I was working for ‘Oodum Mehangaley’ and ‘Naan Aanaiyittal’ songs meant for MGR. Same way I gave ‘Chikku Bhukku Rayiley’ for Rahman, then went on to give ‘Thathai Thathai’ for Yuvan,” says the poet with pleasure. The 78-yr old Youngster’s songs were loved by the people of 4 generations. Yet the man is not outdated, he can still write kinky duets and give lyrics for peppy youthful songs. [arr] City set to rock to Rahman beats... for a cause
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata-/City-set-to-rock-to-Rahman-beats-for-a-cause/articleshow/5224715.cms KOLKATA: Come Saturday, and music lovers are in for a star-studded treat. A R Rahman will be in town with an entourage that reads like the who's-who of Bollywood playback music. The winner of two Oscars has some great plans up his sleeves, and helping him conjure a magical evening at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan will be some of the country's best singers Sadhana Sargam, Hariharan, Javed Ali, Rashid Ali, Shweta Pandit and Nitin Mohan, not to mention renowned percussionist Sivamani. The thousands of Rahman fans who will turn up for the evening are certain to be mesmerized at the concert organised by the Liver Foundation, West Bengal, which will build a liver hospital in the city from the proceeds of the ticket sales. During a trip to Kolkata on October 13, his first to the city since winning the Oscars, the music genius signed guitars which will be auctioned off within a few days. The revenue so raised, too, will be spent on building the hospital. Most paintings and portraits creations of Liver Foundation vice-president Kalyan Bose that Rahman signed during that visit have been auctioned at a gala dinner. Rahman told me that my painting of a mother holding a girl to her chest was the one he loved the most. Among the 18 paintings, 13 were auctioned and fetched around Rs 25 lakh. The remaining will also be auctioned after the concert on November 14. A special portrait of Rahman, painted by Bose, will be presented to Rahman. Painting is something that I enjoy. It is my hobby as well as passion. What could have been better than my paintings being auctioned to raise funds for a cause and make our dreams come true? he said. The three-hour programme details have been kept under wraps, with Rahman deciding to surprise the audience with a few new compositions. At the press conference on October 13, Rahman had said that the Jai Ho concert will form a part of his nationwide chain of concerts that has already been taken to Calicut, Pune and Chennai. A unique project has been taken up by the Liver Foundation and I am glad to be part of it. The organization has a great aspiration to serve the society, he had said. Rahman. “The NSW Government is funding a one-off, free public concert in Parramatta Park to give the people of Sydney a chance to see this much loved musician,” Mr Rees said. “This will be a great show with more than 40 musicians and dancers alongside Rahman on a custom built outdoor stage. “Without doubt one of the world’s great talents, I am sure Rahman will show Sydney why he is one of the all-time highest selling recording artists.”Mr Rees said the NSW Government has been the festival’s main supporter since it began in 1977. “Including the additional $1.75 million for the Festival First Night, the NSW Government will invest more than $5 million in the Sydney Festival.” Rahman fever His Music ~ My Mother Tongue Add whatever you love to the Yahoo! Rahman will also deliver the first lecture on Jackson. According to the music director, Jackson’s life, music and how he inspired him will all be a part of the subject. The Maestro of Madras has been quoted as saying by the DNA, “I have been inspired by Michael and his works for years now. I had met him and though he was such a big star, he was always a very humble human being. That really touched and inspired me. I think he was an inspiration for an entire generation. His music must have influenced countless musicians across the world and it would be an honor for me to have the students of my music school learn and discuss the artist of the century.” Rahman fever His Music ~ My Mother Tongue From cricket scores to your friends. [arr] The Sydney Festival opens on Jan 9. Tickets will go on sale on Monday.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/entertainment/arts/hume-promises-a-wild-ride-complete-with-hamlet-in-mud/2009/11/04/1257247660466.html LINDY HUME unveiled the program to her first Sydney Festival last night, promising ''a wild ride'' of performances, partying and serious reflection about the pursuit of happiness. Hume has sought to expand the reach of the festival - whose popularity burgeoned during the four years it was programmed by Fergus Linehan - by setting up an inner-west hub and forming an alliance with the University of Sydney. ''I was determined to continue the support of hot independent artists and theatre visionaries,'' says Hume, who will direct the next three festivals. ''The program is an eclectic mix [and] aims to develop a deeper connection with artists from the Asia-Pacific region and meaningful partnerships with indigenous cultures. These things take time.'' Highlights include the US soul legend Al Green, who headlines Festival First Night; the Oscar-winning Indian composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) in a free concert at Parramatta Park; a concert staging of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and Symphony of Psalms, by the provocative American director Peter Sellars; a brazen version of Giselle by Ireland's Fabulous Beast; and Rogue's Gallery, a concert of pirate ballads and sea songs conceived by Johnny Depp and featuring Marianne Faithfull, Tim Robbins, Baby Gramps, Sarah Blasko and New York Dolls singer David Johansen. A German production of Hamlet also promises to startle with six actors, mud, gunshots and smoke. Tickets to Rogue's Gallery on the Opera House forecourt cost $145 and $135 and premium seats to Sellar's double bill are $189. There will, however, be standing-room tickets for $50 at the Opera House Concert Hall in a festival that prides itself on accessibility and reach. Tickets to many productions, both Australian and international, cost between $40 and $70. Hume has revived the performance series, About an Hour, at the Seymour Centre, at which tickets to all shows are $30. The festival boasts an impressive free outdoor program, including The Manganiyar Seduction from India inspired by the windows of Amsterdam's red light district and showcasing 43 Rajasthani musicians. Opera in the Domain will also return to the festival umbrella with a performance of Leonard Bernstein's musical Candide starring Paul McDermott, Emma Matthews, David Hobson and Judi Connelli. The NSW Premier and Arts Minister, Nathan Rees, announced an additional $1.75 million for Festival First Night yesterday, lifting the Government's total funding of the annual event to $5 million. Rahman revealed that it is his conscious decision to remain out of the media glare as he doesn't want his children -- Khadijah, Rahima and Aameen -- to feel like they're living in a glass bowl. I want to give my children a normal childhood. I want them to grow up without any pressure of how well they should perform because their dad is so-and-so. I want them to write their own destiny. All this media attention is because of the work that I'm thankfully getting and doing, but I'm consciously trying to keep it all away from my personal life, said Rahman in an exclusive interview to DNA. I don't want to expose my personal space to the camera just because people want to know more about it. They can know me for my work -- that's my identity. My children can get their own spotlight once they write their own destiny with their own hands. They don't need to share mine. They are young and should focus on becoming what they want to. I don't want to distract them. The Mozart of Madras also shared his feelings about his reclusive wife Saira Banu, who was last seen when he took her with him to Los Angeles for the Oscars. She is a pillar of strength for me. She doesn't want to share my limelight and is content raising our children and looking after the family. My work has increased over the years and I thank her for being there to look after my mother, my children and me. Without her, I wouldn't have been able to involve myself so single-mindedly in my profession. I was at peace as I knew she was handling everything with ease, he says. It is a known fact that Rahman is a dedicated son to his mother Kareema and the soft-spoken musician says he's beholden for the spiritual strength she has imbibed in him.My mother is the spiritual head of our family. She is the guiding light for all of us and the energy behind our family's growth. She raised me with great patience and hardship. I wouldn't be me without my mother. Whatever attributes I have in me -- and the world has seen it -- is because she has blessed me with them, he says. The Chiggy Wiggy composer whose act with Kylie Minogue has gone on to become a rage says Indians winning awards overseas has made the West look towards our country as a storehouse of talent -- and many more such collaborations are waiting to happen. It is a time of great synergy between the West and the East. We have to show them how brilliant India is by sticking to our roots. As Sivamani enters the room, he does not say a word but greets all with his breath taking rhythm, which he plays with the help of a tablemat and a glass. Ask the trio about A R Rahman shows and performing with the legend, and all three of them give a big smile saying that they are like one big family. “I am waiting for the show to begin. I don’t know what we’ll be performing but Rahman’s shows have always given a different feel,” says Sadhana Sargam talking about her connection with A R Rahman since Chanda Re (Sapnay) days. When asked Sivamani about his connection with the maestro he says, “Myself and AR, we always dreamt of doing big shows like Peta Gabriel, and in our first show itself, our dream was fulfilled as it was house full,” he says with a smile. “We have done many shows together, but with Jai ho, Rahman has made a bridge for all the musicians to get to that higher level.” Benny Dayal, who is comparatively new in the industry, says that he started training in Hindustani music only because A R Rahman asked him to do so. “I am more of a listener musician and don’t have any training. I used to sing in the chorus for sir (Rahman) and that is where he spotted me and used my voice.” Ask them about Rahman, the perfectionist and they give each other an understanding smile. “A R loves to do a lot of rehearsals,” says Sivamani. “He wants to make sure that everything is in place and so many a times it so happens that we end up rehearsing the whole night and only realise it when we actually see the sun rising.” So don’t you feel exhausted during the show, without any rest? “Music gives us all the energy required and we never get tired of listening to these songs and rehearsals,” Benny Dayal says as they sign off with Sivamani playing the Marival, a musical instrument that was gifted to him by an ashram. AR Rahman is an Indian composer, record producer, musician and singer and is probably best known as the winner of two Academy Awards for the music he wrote for the smash hit film Slumdog Millionaire. His visit to Middlesex University in Hendon, London had two purposes. Along with Middlesex's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Driscoll, he signed a Memorandum of Understanding between his KM Music Conservatory in Chennai, India and the University. AR, as he is known, was also awarded an Honorary Degree, making him a Doctor of Middlesex University, the highest honour the University can bestow. Middlesex is an extremely popular British university throughoutIndia and hundreds of Indian students come to study on its London campuses. When the word got out that their musical hero, AR Rahman, was coming to receive his honorary degree, excitement started to mount. When he arrived on campus, there were scenes reminiscent of Beatlemania; women screamed and men mobbed him for an autograph or just a glance in their direction! In his speech to the University's academics and students, AR Rahman thanked the University and said: It is an enormous honour to belong to this great seat of learning. My journey as a musician started at the age of nine and I see music as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it. Music touches people and breaks down barriers, creating harmony in troubled times. This has always been my philosophy. The Memorandum of Understanding between AR Rahman's KM Music Conservatory and Middlesex University focuses on educational collaboration between India and the UK. The two organisations have agreed to explore the possibilities for collaboration in music and education and to support one of AR Rahman's `pet projects', that of the blending of Asian and Western musical styles. Dr Terry Butland is Deputy Vice-Chancellor International at Middlesex University. He commented on the Memorandum of Understanding: I can't think of a more suitable and well placed partner for the University than AR Rahman. We are delighted to sign this Memorandum of Understanding which paves the way for what will undoubtedly be some interesting and innovative projects delivered jointly between Middlesex University and the KM Music Conservatory . AR Rahman explained the background to the Memorandum of Understanding: We looked at lots of universities but felt Middlesex had the right, friendly, vibe as well as its great history During his visit to Middlesex University, AR Rahman revealed the current projects heis working on. He is scoring a comedy film and also writing and performing on a pop album, working with a well known hip hop label, Inderscope. His KM Music Conservatory has only been open a year, but already has 200 students. When asked about what he considers to be his biggest achievement, AR says it is infilm music. As a human being I have so many interests. [arr] Being Rahman’s nephew is hard: G.V. Prakash
Being A.R. Rahman’s nephew must have its perks, right? “That’s what people think. Everyone thinks because I’m Rahman’s nephew I have it easy. But that’s not true. It’s hard having that tagline, because people use it only to criticize my work. They say ‘He’s A.R. Rahman’s nephew, he could have done better. He should have done this or that extra for a certain song’ and so on. Like everyone else, I too look up to him and admire his work. But he is my uncle -- that will not suffice for me to make a name. Rahman, his collaborative album and his experiments with unusual flutes It’s what you might call a quintessential Chennai music success story — boy begins learning Carnatic music at the age of three-and-a- half; has his flute arangetram in his teens presided over by acclaimed vocalist, Balamuralikrishna; does jingles with his childhood friend (music director G.V. Prakash) when he is just out of school ; is ‘discovered’ by the movie industry at Saarang, where he does a hat-trick as best instrumentalist three years running while studying engineering; and turns down a job with Infosys to end up working with none other than A.R. Rahman. Meet Navin Iyer, who at 24 is one of the most in-demand flautists in the film music industry, having recorded for over 500 movies in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. “I think I’m the youngest musician in the cine industry — not counting singers,” says the young flautist (and self-taught saxophonist) as we meet at his brand new personal studio in the heart of Mylapore. Life is hectic since, as he explains, he’s one of a handful of flute ‘session artistes’ in the country. “Being a session artiste is another skill altogether,” he says, lounging behind the studio computer in an old pair of jeans and faded T-shirt. “The music director will demand a particular feel for a song, which you have to deliver; at the same time, you have to be able to add your own creativity and compose on the spot. You should be able to change gears between the two immediately.” Recordings may last just a few minutes — his flute piece for ‘Akkam Pakkam’ from Kireedam took just four (“sometimes things just fall into place”) — or up to two hours for background scores, which generally take longer. “You need to watch the movie scene to get in sync with it,” he says, comparing the process to being ‘in a relationship’ . “Unless you spend time with it, talk to it, you won’t get the exact feel.” One movie scene is etched in his memory for good — the one in Rang De Basanti, his first recording for Rahman. “He just called me and said ‘can you come?’” he recalls, still sounding awed. “My flute comes in the background score of the scene after Madhavan’s character dies… it was a very emotional scene, very emotional for me too!” Since then, he’s played for a number of Rahman’s projects, including the big one, Slumdog Millionaire. “The morning of the recording for Slumdog…I’d actually overslept, but luckily made it in time,” he says, adding with a laugh, “And then, my God, the Oscar!” He travels quite a bit for recordings, and sometimes, music directors travel to him, such as Vishal of Vishal-Shekhar who came down to Chennai just to record the flute track for Aakhon mein teri from Om Shanti Om, because he liked Navin’s ‘ideas and style’ . “Earlier, music directors would have the entire score written and cine musicians played according to that,” comments Navin. “Now music directors are more open; they enjoy it when we give our inputs. It adds a new dimension to a song.” Gone also are the days when session artistes had to come together at one time to record a song; today, with the magic of track technology, individual artistes can play their parts when they have time and “ping pong on to the next recording,” he says. “Right now, for example, I’m practising during the day for my concert tour with Earthsync, so I’m often recording through the night.” The day we meet, he’d been at Malayalam music director Ouseppachan’s studio at T. Nagar recording till 4 a.m., had gotten a couple of hours of sleep, hit the gym (“it keeps you kicking”), and fit in our interview before a practice session at 10 a.m. That’s the way he likes it — busy, with plenty of variety. At his studio is a specially-made glass flute which he’s been experimenting with. Next up is one made of clay, another of marble and a saxophone of bamboo. Ready to roll out is a collaborative album, ‘Three 4 the Music’, with mridangist D.A. Srinivas and violinist Raghavendra Rao that connects Carnatic music with

[arr] Blue in LA, advance booking on!
http://www.planetradiocity.com/musicreporter/news.php?newscatid=1newsid=1503 Director Anthony D'Souza along with A.R. Rahman have set a camp in Los Angeles to get the mixing in place for their mega film Blue. The makers of the film, which is less than a fortnight away from its release, are leaving no stones unturned to lend an international feel to the product which is touted to be the costliest ever to come out of Indian shores. Says a source close to the project, “Blue is huge by all standards and with the kind of technical finesse it boasts of, there was no way that any cost would have been spared during it's post production. The makers didn't hesitate at all to process the film's mixing in LA. As we talk, Tony would already have completed a substantial part of the film's mixing. Rahman is known for being fascinated with the city of Los Angeles when it comes to recording and mixing of music. Even though he already has studios in Chennai and Mumbai, he is in the process of getting studios in Los Angeles (USA) and London (UK) as well. Since there is also an increase in his international assignments, it only makes sense for Rahman to have a worldwide presence through his studios. Coming back to Blue, the film is seeing an unprecedented excitement being built up around it. The advance booking at numerous leading multiplexes has already opened, even though the film is more than 10 days away. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/ET-Cetera/Rahman-SRK-Sania-to-be-10-Games-star-cast/articleshow/5084171.cms NEW DELHI: With the countdown for the Commonwealth Games-2010 having begun, the organisers are trying to rope in celebrities from different walks of life to promote the mega event. The star cast has been drawn by the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games. Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan , Preity Zinta, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif are set to be approached by the Organising Committee (OC) to showcase the international event to be held in the Capital in October next year. Others on the list include Oscar winning musician A R Rahman, actors Rahul Bose, Nana Patekar and John Abraham, lyricist Javed Akhtar, classical instrumental musician Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. The stars may bring some cheer to the OC, which is under fire from the Commonwealth Games Federation chief who has questioned its capability to manage the prestigious event. Sports personalities—Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Saina Nehwal , Vijender Kumar, Abhinav Bindra, Raghvendra Rathore, Dhanraj Pillai, Jeev Milkha Singh and Baichung Bhutia — have also been shortlisted as the likely brand ambassadors for the sporting event. Interestingly, present day cricketers are missing from the list, but sources said former cricketers have been approached to promote the event. Sources said that the OC has already sent letters to some of the prominent sportspersons , actors, musicians and media personalities requesting them to promote the event. In the media category, the organizers have shortlisted Bennett, Coleman Company Ltd managing director Vineet Jain, chairperson and editorial director of HT Media Shobhana Bhartia, president and chairman of NDTV group Prannoy Roy, admen Prasoon Joshi and Piyush Pandey and wildlife filmmaker Mike Pandey. OC sources said the brand ambassadors will promote the event but will not be paid anything for doing so. They will participate in the opening and closing ceremonies in addition to promoting the event in the run-up to the Games. Officials , however, pointed out that the list is yet to be finalised and a few more names may be added to it. To avoid that, he began to use ragas that are not usually used to compose for a particular situation... he gave Hai Raama of Rangeela as an example by which a seductive song was composed using a classical carnatic raaga. Probably for the same reasons, ARR has decided to opt for hindustani and ghazal in tamil songs as opposed to the carnatic raagas used by most MDs here. In fact, I feel that this quality of ARR's i.e bringing in different flavour to his songs and thinking out of the box is what sets him apart from others. But whatever said and done, the usage of Northern classical does not mean that ARR has lost his 90's touches. He never lost his touches...he has only developed his music to a new level. When most MDs sit and compose a song in a customary manner, ARR doesn't even stick to what he created. He keeps creating new genres in music and moves forward. But the problem here is that some listeners (his fans included) only tend to think his 90's songs as magical and amazing...hence the uses of words such as he lost his touch, there's no longer soul in his songs etc. But come to think of it, how long do you want him to sit and compose songs like Kadhal rojave and Minnale? Don't get me wrong, I love these songs. I truly believe these songs are amazing and stunning numbers, but so do songs like Munbe Vaa and Newyork Nagaram. It's kinda distressing that after all the development and changes ARR has painfully brought to the Indian music, there are still some who want him to stay to where he was 17 years ago. --- On Thu, 10/1/09, Din, D, Nesh dinesh.theboss@ ... wrote: From: Din, D, Nesh dinesh.theboss@ ... [arr] AR Rahman is moving stars and earth to conserve water
http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_ar-rahman-is-moving-stars-and-earth-to-conserve-water_1294396 Mumbai: Oscar-winner AR Rahman is working with some of the biggest names in the industry to create awareness about conserving water. Rahman has just finished shooting for a special programme, Moving Stars and Earth For Water, at Filmistan Studio. The initiative is part of Guy Laliberte's Poetic Social Mission, the first artistic and social event to be broadcast from space. The video will be beamed live from the International Space Station on October 9. Rahman sang a Tamil song called Vallai Pookal [a national award winning song from Mani Rathnam's Kannathil Muthamittal]. He also added a small message for the world which urges everybody to conserve water, said Abhimanyu Singh, the producer of Rahman's video and the Indian partner of the initiative. Described as a poetic tale written by Yann Martel, Moving Stars and Earth For Water will be a two-hour programme. The tale will be revealed as we go through 14 cities around the world, with each city featuring its own water-related theme, said Singh. Joining Rahman for this 120-minute programme will be former US vice-president Al Gore, Hollywood actors Matthew McConaughey and Salma Hayek, singers Shakira, Joss Stone, U2 and poet Touria Ikbal among other global celebrities. Poetic Social Mission is an effort of the One Drop Foundation which aims at conserving water. This is the first social artistic mission in space and Rahman is representing India at this global event.
