Re: [arr] [non-ARR] SwarPlug in Logic 8

2009-03-24 Thread Sunil VG
That's my problem. It does not even show up in the AU manager. I'm using
Logic Express 8 on OS 10.5. Have been trying to sort this out with the Swar
team as well. No luck yet. Do you recall any specific steps during the
install? I followed the instructions on the inlay card of the SwarPlug CD.

Thanks a lot for your reply Bharath. Much appreciated.

Re: [arr] Delhi 6 > MUST WATCH !

2009-02-23 Thread Sunil VG
I share similar views. For me Delhi 6 is like a piece of abstract art with
gentle brush strokes. Its very metaphoric. I liked the whole format and
narrative, which may or may not be box office friendly. The characters were
well etched and the AR's score elevated the film. Beautiful camera work and
I loved the whole concept of "Dil Gira Dafatan" picturization. My only peeve
would have to be the film's ending. Hmm..

[arr] Dil Se & Delhi 6

2009-02-02 Thread Sunil VG
For me, Delhi 6 is the Dil Se of this era. Songs like Rehna Tu, Dil Gira
Dafatan & Masakali are creatively as innovative and pathbreaking as Dil Se
Re, Chaiyya Chaiyya & Jiya Jale were those days. Sonically speaking, perhaps
there's not as much scope for innovation as there was during Dil Se. But let
us give credit where it is due. Delhi 6 is absolutely stunning. A
masterpiece of this era.

Sunil

So it could be Chinmayee's vocal bit that has been used as tone for the
continuum. I also hear some female (?) harmonies in the chorus - 01:13 to
01:18 - "Mujhe teri baarish mein bheegna hai ghul jaana hai"

[arr] Interesting lines from Chinmayi's blog

2009-01-14 Thread Sunil VG
Taken from Chinmayi's post "Late
Night",
somehow these words seem so relevant right now!

En mael kallai eriyaadhe, veedu katti viduven;
Enaku thee vaikkadhe, en veettirkku dheepam aetri viduven;
Ennai thurathaadhe en ilakkai seekkiram adaindhu viduven;
Enakku visham kodukkadhe naan Neelakanthan aagividuven"

If you don't understand Tamil it roughly translates to

Do not pelt me with stones, for I will use them to build a house
Do not set me afire, for I will light up my home
Do not chase me, for I will reach my goal faster
Do not hand me poison, for I will become NeelakanTha.

[arr] AR & Prathap Pothan

2008-10-26 Thread Sunil VG
Happened to watch an interview with Prathap Pothan (actor/writer/director
from the South). He mentioned he was in talks with AR for a film. Not sure
if its a Tamil or Malayalam film. His last directorial venture in Malayalam
was the critically acclaimed & successful "Oru Yathra Mozhi".

Trivia: As an actor, he was last seen as IAS officer K.R. Menon in Guru.

I've been trying to figure the words in the interlude. Only after watching

Re: [arr] How Do You Listen to a new album of Rahman sir

2008-10-05 Thread Sunil VG
I try not to listen to promos or online clips. For me the whole process of
getting the CD to listening to the first note still excites me. The
anticipation of how he would start a song, the interludes, the genre, the
instruments etc is as intense, if not more, as it was when I first heard AR.
I like to listen to the whole album, soak it in and then go in for another
round of listening. Like many of you, sometimes I don't like a particular
song in the first couple of hearings. This usually changes.

The problem nowadays is that even after 16 years of living with AR's music,
some of us don't get him.

Sunil

Vithur, thanks a lot for volunteering to do this. I've been getting my CDs
online or asking family/friends to bring them from India. I'll use your

I've given up on trying to get AR releases (especially Tamil) here in UAE.
Audio stores couldn't care less. Music distributors couldn't care less. I
guess they are all OK with piracy.

[arr] What was AR's first ever recording...

2008-08-13 Thread Sunil VG
...as composer? I'm talking long before Set Me Free. Anybody has any idea?
Perhaps a jingle? That piece of work, however small, would be where history
began. It would be great if we could somehow listen to it. Just dreaming!

Re: [arr] Re: [Semi-ARR] Credits given to musicians

2008-07-22 Thread Sunil VG
I remember Guitar Prasanna once mentioned on his web site that the July
Madham intro was totally created by ARR. Prasanna just played it and brought
his style into the brilliant piece. A similar statement was made by Naveen
when asked about his heavenly flute bits in ARR songs.

Although ARR gives his instrumentalists the freedom to improvise, it doesn't
take any credit away from. Crediting musicians on album covers was his way
of recognizing & acknowledging the importance of team work.

Rawat, thanks for the videos. Somehow missed them earlier. Picturization of

the song. There's something about this film that's making me look forward to

Re: [arr] Re: Sharjah Concert in detail

2008-04-20 Thread Sunil VG
Reproducing an ARR song live in its original form is almost impossible. Some
basic rhythms, patterns, voices, instruments etc. have to use its original
tracks. However, this does not take away even a bit of the efforts the
musicians and singers put in on stage. You can clearly see all the
improvisations they do during the show.

As for Sivamani's solo performance, here's how it works: once he plays a
groove live, an on-board sound module lets him record and loop it on the fly
(the same was used for modulating his vocals). This enables him to move on
to other sections of his massive gear. It works just like setting up a
rhythm track adding kicks, high hats, snare, etc one by one. As for playing
the water bottle, trust me that was very much live, just like other parts of
the show! A possible explanation of minor syn issues could be your distance
from the speakers.

My two cents...

Sunil

[arr] Sharjah Concert Photos!

2008-04-19 Thread Sunil VG
Concert Highlights:

   - ARR was in his element. His singing was top notch, almost flawless.
He was energetic and even worked up the audience!
   - Hariharan, Madhushree, Tanvi, Neethi Mohan, Benny Dayal & Naresh
   Iyer gave memorable performances.
   - Audio was mind blowing with almost no hiccups which is absolutely
remarkable for a live show of this magnitude.
   - Stage settings, lighting and motion graphics were in total harmony
   with the music.
   - All in all, THE best concert I've seen. Three and a half hours of
   pure adrenaline rush!

Here are some images from the show...

[ARR] Amazing JA

2008-02-06 Thread Sunil VG
Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah is an interesting song in many ways. Can't recall
another song where AR has used 7 distinct rhythm &

percussion variations! Love the way the trombones/brass play offbeat at 1:44
and the subtle ending drowned in pads.

Remove the bass line in Khwaja Mere Khwaja and you feel you are in a durgah
listening to the song live. I love the melody and the strings in Man Mohana.
Brilliant singing. Both songs have such a calming affect. Could perhaps be
used for anger management!

Well said Vijay. Anyone who has lived with ARR's music long enough, felt his
soul while listening to his songs, would know better than to doubt his
divine ability, even for a second. For me, Jamal's original mail was nothing

Actually this is one of way the unknowns in an industry get their cheap
fame by criticizing the greats. They can't accept that someone like ARR
keeps on mesmerizing the world folks with each new 'out of the world' music
whereas they , with all their might, just is capable of a whimper. Thus,
they resort to cheap tricks to get their name splashed across several
websites. But little do these goons know that they will be remembered for
the wrong reason like the veteran reporter who couldn't differentiate
between re-tune and remixed songs.

Even Michael Schumacher suffers the same fate. He is by far the best
driver ever in the history of F1 racing, but even drivers without an iota of
Schumacher's accomplishment give negative statements about him.

Re: [arr] Guru - Fails Miserably

2007-01-16 Thread Sunil VG

The saddest thing about these mails is that some people (deliberately?) fail
to see the bigger picture! Guru is not about Mallika's seductive moves or
Ash's rain-soaked sari. This is an inspirational film about daring to dream
and pushing the envelope. This is a film about hope. One of those ladies
from the "Shakti Parivar" tells Maddy that if there were 10 Gurus, there
wouldn't be poverty in India. Lets look at the bigger picture - the essence
of the film. Let not the business of packaging the film for maximum
reachability get in the way of its underlying message and intention. If all
you could take home from the film were those "unnecessary rain scenes" or
those "unnecessary songs", well thenthe lesser said the better.

Well done Mani, Abhishek and AR :-) Its time once again to take a bow!!!

  hi,

this is my personal opinion abt guru. I watched it last sunday paying
(wasting) 15$.

I did not like the movie @ all. The things i hated in the movie are:

1.unnecessary episode of vidya balan/maddy, am sure mani wanted a
movie to run for 2.45 hrs, with the original script it was only for 2
hrs, then he thougth to include this.
2. aish is not convincing in her role, look so thin and acting is jaded.
3. songs r unnecessary and placed badly in the movies. mayya (2 stanza
was cut r probably pushed to background) is not necessary, immediately
followd by barso re (again 2nd stanza pushed to background - except
for few lines). ay hairathe does come in bits and pieces, tera bina is
not fully picturised and fails to create a impact on screen as it was
on trailers and audio's. yammo yammo was okey and baazi laga - highly
unnecessary.
4. rajiv menons work was alrite and nothing that gr8.
5. rahman's bgm was okey, he used a lot of songs pieces in the bgm as
they were not used by mani properly.
6. so many scenes in rain, barso re, whenver abhishek addresses his
staff, prathap pothan episode. why does mani waste so much water when
there is so much scarcity in chennai. the point is rain is not reqd.
agreed in 1st song of mouna ragam but why repetedly here?
7. moves @ a liesurely pace and doesn't pick up anytime
8. abhishek does all his acts and justifies in 4.5 min saying .5 min
is profit, naah it did not work. where did gandhi come in? who asked
abt his past to the panel that 2 shirts/15000 rupees stuff? they were
asking reasons and justifications for his act?
9.where did mithun disappear in the end?

only gud thing was abhishek acting. rahman's songs fails to create an
impact on screen, it was very gud in audio and i was jumping.!

better luck next time mani ! probably lajjo is more in terms of period
again who knows?

waste of time and money!

  Dear friends,

When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as a gift for
ARR's birthday, I
had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and the
physical cheque only by
courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had hoped for,
I felt it was only
fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to Chennai on
Saturday morning not
knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now, we have
seen enough evidence of
his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even before I
could let him know,
all of which was completely unwarranted.

Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's entreaties, I
had the good fortune
of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the person
whom many of us deify.
Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily dismissed, I was
treated with the same
affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as were many
of the key
personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to greet him
in person.

I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay to only
find a bunch of busy
workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I said that I
had to meet ARR Sir,
I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is the building
right in front of
his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the same, some of
them being Mr.
Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony BMG,
Naresh Iyer, executives
from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil industry whom I
did not recognize. I
could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the industry -
Subhash Ghai, Udit and
Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee, Radio
Mirchi, Radio City were
some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in the
studio. ARR's right hand
men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were also in
attendance.

We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and sisters and
others in the family.
I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every brick and
body in his home and
studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that we must
have lunch and we were
ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director Shankar and
family, Kathir,
Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we made our
back to the studio,
were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and screened the
video of Pray For Me
Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple
exhilarating emotions that
passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard so far in
the live performances
truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else, but ARR,
could have an Indian
classical harmony accompanying a rap segment?

Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates his
birthday on the same day,
cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his special 'Spiderman'
shaped cake, ARR
decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-)

Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the birthday cake
was distributed and
everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to hand the
cheque over to ARR. I
wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But ARR
instead sprang a surprise
on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling these folks
what you guys have
been doing.' I went, "Huh?" And his response was, 'I was on the group last
night and saw all
these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing my
responsibilities now'. I
quickly assured him that he could count on our support in anything that he
wanted to do. he
then handed the cheque over to his mother and introduced me to the rest of
the people there.

He then asked, 'Don't you want a picture?'. I joked, 'I would like you to
say a few words or
else all the folks would think I made off with the money'. He laughed and
agreed. I told him I
could wait till the studio was a little quieter. He said fine and went on
to have a private
conversation with Shankar and then moved away to supervise some dubbing
work for Guru that was
underway at the studio.

Before he left, I mustered the courage to ask him if there was any way I
could get another look
at Pray For Me Brother, to which his reaction was, 'Of course, why even
ask?' and asked Abdul
from the studio to screen it for me in one of the smaller rooms.

I was waiting around the studio for a while when a Jaya TV crew trudged in
for a sound bite.

Re: [arr] Mata Amritanadamayi (AMMA) & AR Rahman

2006-04-23 Thread Sunil VG

The song, in all probablity, was composed by Rahul who does a lot of work for Amma. There were a few mails in the Group last year which confirmed that Rahul has a Rahmanish sound and his voice too happens to be somewhat similar to ARR. Since then I've been trying to find more info on him without success. I've heard some of his work for Amritha TV & it seems quite interesting.

This article is about the music of Godfather. Though a very positive review, there are a few errors. Here's the translation:

Rahman with 7 songs and 10 tunes
When AR Rahman takes up composing for a film, the director doesn't bother reducing the number of songs. regardless of the story, they don't mind taking time to come up with song situations. This is aexactly whet happenened with the Tamil fin "Godfather". They had already finished the Rahman film with 7 songs. Though there are 7 songs, the tunes are 10. What's interesting is that one song has been made in three different ways. There's hardly anyone who doesn't know that Rahman's music is a formula for success. Here too, the success is repeated. Though not his best compositions, Rahman has proven that he isn't capable of producing bad music!

The song "Kammakarayile..." with its tune and Rahman's new humming style makes it very different. There's no way this song sung by Naresh and Sowmya won't be great. "Illamai" sung by Suresh Peters and the others starts with a regular Rahman beat and then goes on to new heights. Neat song and lyrics. The remix of the same song is sung by Tanvi and Naresh. This is one song where the remix sounds better than the orriginal. This song is also a statement of Naresh's brilliance. "Kaatril oru vaarthai" sung by SPB, Sadhana and Reena reminds one of the music of many old melodies.

A song that brings up Goan memories is "Dinam Dinam". "Theeyil vizhunda" is based on Sufi music. This is a song where the music takes the listener to great heights using rhythm and then suddenly brings them down to blend beautifully with the lyrics. The song that has been created in three different ways is "Innisai". Sung by Srinivas & Naresh very differently, this song deserves a special mention. This is probably the best song among the lot. A song that anyone can listen to and enjoy. A song to be treasured.

Re: [arr] ARR Tired??

2006-03-27 Thread Sunil VG

Hi Senthil,

Can you please give instances of the songs/sections of the songs where you sensed tiredness. Although I didn't quite enjoy the "Hey hey sahiba" hook in the otherwise melodious Kaatril, I feel the entire album is fresh. I especially love the numerous vocal phrases AR has used in the original "Illamai" track. It looks like he was on a vocal experimentation trip! As I had mentioned in an earlier mail, I feel he had fun composing the songs for GF!

Re: [arr] Dil Se Re - Ae ajnabi my favourite, says Gulzar

The next best thing to an AR song is learning a bit about it's making! Thanks for the article Puneet.

Flashbacks always, but always, land you back in the present. But inmy case, I'm flitting from one flashback to another. And the story
about A R Rahman continues...I remember it had been two years since I first met Rahman and ourmaiden musical venture had been nixed, when I got a call from ManiRatnam saying he wanted to meet me. When we met, he asked me to write
the songs for his next film, Dil Se. A R Rahman was to score themusic, he told me. That excited me so I agreed to write the lyricsthere and then. To help me, Mani gave me an outline of the story(without giving away much), a graph of the two main characters, the
theme of the movie and the kind of treatment he was planning for thestory—that's it. Generally speaking, when I write songs for a movie, Ilike to be aware of the entire script. But no such help wasforthcoming here.
But with a director of Mani Ratnam's calibre, you're confident heknows what he's doing. So I wasn't worried when he didn't tell me muchabout the movie. In fact, not knowing the entire plot had its upside.
When I write for other movies, I have one advantage: I know the kindof language the characters will speak, so I write accordingly. Here Ididn't know anything; even the song situations were free-floating.Mani just told me the overall theme of the songs and it was very
inspiring. Even more inspiring was the treatment he was planning togive the musical numbers. Mani was the first director who actuallyasked me to give abstract images for his narrative. Most of our Hindifilm directors like their songs to have cinematic images that can be
picturised easily, but Mani wanted abstract images and I welcomed thatwhole-heartedly.While we were discussing the song situations, Mani quoted the famousPersian poet Maulana Rumi. He told me he wanted me to write a song on
the seven stages of love starting with `uns', `ulfat', `mohabbat' andending with the ultimate `junoon'. He also added that the song wouldbe repeated throughout the film. Since I'm well versed with the poetry
of Rumi and Hafiz, I understood what Mani wanted. As expected, Rahman had more than one composition for the theme song. There was one, and one more and another one. He just kept pulling themout and kept saying, can we do this, can we do that? Ultimately, we
finalised one tune to which I wrote Satrangi re. That was the firstsong I wrote for Dil Se.Another song, Jiya jale, sung by Lataji (Lata Mangeshkar), was asuhaag raat song and I thought Rahman combined it beautifully with
South Indian folk. That was the first time Lataji sang for Rahman. Iwas there when she recorded the song and she was quite pleased aboutit. As I've mentioned earlier, Rahman's studio is dimly lit and thesmall glass room where the singer stands can be quite lonely because
you can't see anything or anyone from there. Lataji felt slightlyawkward about it and she murmured, `Akeli khadi kis ke liye gaa rahihoon main.' So I found a stool and sat on it outside her glass door sothat she could see me. That, I think, assured her. I must add here
that she sang Jiya jale brilliantly in her mellifluous voice.Today when I look back, I realise Dil Se marked an important phase inmy career as a lyricist. Important because I was working with Rahmanand a great director like Mani Ratnam for the first time. Also Dil Se
started a new phase for me, that of writing Sufiana poetry. Just asHumne dekhi hai unn aankhon ki mehekti khushboo had set off a phase ofusing abstract imagery in my songs early on.Rahman, being a religious man, enjoyed composing for Dil Se too. I
could see that the Sufiana lyrics brought out the best in him. By thenhe'd also learnt a little bit of Hindi so he could understand mypoetry. In Dil Se there were three Sufiana songs. But my favouriteremains Ae ajnabi tu bhi kabhi aawaz de kahin se. I think it was a
really beautiful song. But the one that really became a rage was Chal chhaiyan chhaiyan. There is a song of Sufi poet Bulleh Shah's called Tere ishq nachayakar thaiyya thaiyya, which Sukhwinder used to sing. Rahman loosely
based his composition of Chal chhaiyan chhaiyan on that. The entireorchestration was all Rahman's, of course. On my part, I tried torefresh the song by using the words chhaiyan chhaiyan instead ofthaiyya thaiyya. Many people thought the words chhaiyan chhaiyan were
just sounds used for effect. But that's not true; chhaiyan meanschhaon or shade and it's a commonly used word in rural Hindi and inour folk songs. The next line—Jinke sar ho ishq ki chaon, paon keneeche jannat hogi, chal chhaiyan chhaiyan—explains the concept of
chhaiyan chhaiyan. Sukhwinder sang the song with a storming energy andan infectious voice with Sapna Awasthi ably supporting him. Thepopularity of that song is history—hence the title of this colum

Unarguably India's best music composer today, AR Rahman is back in the hot seat with his score in Rang De Basanti. Jitesh Pillaai exchanges notes with the maverick musician TIMES NEWS NETWORK
He's pushing 40, going on 25. His chocolate mousse voice gently glides through the room. A bit like his entire demeanour. "Sorry for the delay, just have a lot of things to catch up on," he apologises as I grab a few minutes with the man who is unarguably India's best music composer today, on what is yet another whirlwind stopover for him. His current topnotcher, Rang De Basanti, has yet again perked up the stagnant genre monopolised by the nasalcrooning variety of musicians.
But that's another story. There's yet another apocryphal tale which bears repetition. At the height of the film industry strike in Chennai about five years ago, his mentor, Mani Ratnam, was waiting for the music wiz to complete the soundtrack of Alay Payuthe. Ratnam is reported to have deadpanned, "I can either handle the strike or Rahman. Not both simultaneously, please."
That then is the magic of Allah Rakha Rahman. Another industry joke that's often pulled is that after God, Rahman is the greatest leveller. Be it Mani Ratnam, Shyam Benegal, Ashutosh Gowariker or Shankar, they all wait for him. Time no bar. Music bar bar. You've heard the story about him playing the piano when he was all of four. Years later, after rigorously dabbling in the world of 30-second jingles and moonlighting as a musician with composer Illayaraja, he was ready to fly solo and test his métier. Came Roja in 1993. Rahman smiles, "The songs were composed in a small room. I kept thinking that people would hate the music. By the grace of God, it was liked so much that I even went on to win my first National Award for the film."
About Ratnam, Rahman says that he just allows him to do whatever he wishes and then chooses the best. Rahman recalls, "Even when we were composing Jiya jale in Dil Se, I felt a lot of Mallu 'Moplah' tunes coming into my head, Mani said, 'no problem, I'll change my character (Preity Zinta) into a Malayalee girl' and it all sort of fell into place."
It all also fell into place with Rang De Basanti circa 2005. When Rakeysh Mehra greenlighted the film about two years ago, Rahman had given him a scratch tune. When Mehra started the film, he was stuck for a background tune in the climax, miraculously, the tune which Rahman had composed earlier became the leitmotif. Just like that. Rahman smiles that gentle smile of his, "Mehra is a lot like Mani. He just lets me do my own thing. When I composed Paathshala with words like 'lose control', I thought he'd change it into Hindi. But Mehra stuck to it, saying that the only time his assistant came into his room was when he played that tune. So obviously he was sticking to the vibe." When Rahman composes, synthesisers meld into guitars, the dholaks blend with the keyboards. Fusing the music of different traditions, Rahman straddles the world of Bach and Carnatic music with easy facility. Among his oeuvre, his personal favourites include Roja, Muthu, Lagaan, Dil Se and
Taal. But it was also the musical cadences of Gentleman, Kaadhalan, Rangeela, Thiruda Thiruda, Kandukondain Kandukondain and Alay Payuthe that burned up the barcodes in music stores. Born a Hindu, AS Dilip Kumar converted to Islam and the AR Rahman moniker a decade ago, his music is inspired by Sufi mysticism. It's reported that after all the hard times after his father's death, Rahman and his family found solace in Karimullah Shah Kadiri, a Sufi spiritual healer.
Reportedly, he's sold more than 100 million albums, won scores of Filmfare and National awards. His success prompts him to stay connected to his God. "Your faith keeps you focused. You never grow big by putting other people down," he sallies. Talk again veers to the drubbing of
Mangal Pandey, when it was loudly asserted that Rahman had lost his touch. He is unequivocal, "I did my best. Maybe, it was too folksy, too much of in-your-face patriotism…"   But in a capricious industry dictated by the ticket windows, all's well after Rang De Basanti. The self-effacing composer tells me that he's just read a signboard outside a church in Bandra, Mumbai. He says casually, "It says, 'If you start judging people, you won't have time to love'. That's so true, the mind then loses its serenity, its naivete. I think to compose you need to have a purity of being. I also try to find that purity in music. Just before I compose, I'm a total mess, I don't know if I'm coming or going. And then through some divine intervention, it all falls into place. I guess you should just move lightly through life, carry no excess baggage at all."
He should know. Apart from the Padma Shri and collaborations with artistes like the late Nu

Good find Wasim. A lot of similarity there. SEL have been inspired by ARR in a few instances before. So this could be another addition to the list. I must add that SEL are still one of the originals out there.

Re: [arr] Has ARR lost his ear for good sounds?

2005-12-27 Thread Sunil VG

I totally agree with Rawat on the issue of the unwarranted subject line. Let's be more sensible and sensitive with what we post here please.

As for the discussion, and this is for you Bharath - I'm curious to know why you feel that some elements in ARR's recent mixes stand out and do not blend too well. You had made a similar comment regarding the arrangements in RDB, so my curiosity has multiplied! :-) Mind you, I haven't heard RDB as it hasn't released here yet. But as far as I know, ARR's mixes are still handled by Sridhar and Aditya. Do you think its the new tools they are using? Is it ear-fatigue? Or like you said, a new trend?

I know there are a few in this group working in the audio engineering field. Your comments in this regard will be useful...

[arr] Water & ARR's Strings!

2005-12-26 Thread Sunil VG

When asked about Water and the fact that he had given it a 10/10, ARR had said in a recent interview that "10/10 was THEN". So I wasn't expecting ARR's best score when I slipped the CD into the player. Seconds later, what I heard was absolutely overwhelming. Listening to "Chan Chan (Aayo re)" takes you through so many emotions and experiences. The notes played on the santoor when Sukhwinder sings the first line is pure ecstasy. Listen to the strings from 02:25 - 02:40 when Sukhwinder sings "Koyal bhi kuhu kuhu gaane lagi"! And with the backing from 03:56 - 05:00, ARR once again proves that he is the absolute master of strings and chords!

I had bought the Salaam Bombay Dreams DVD too along with Water from Amazon and it has many clips of ARR working with his strings musicians. Its really amazing to see how he improvises on the fly. Now I can visualize all the string parts heard in Water! Like Gopal said, this album is more than 10/10. Its not just a gem - how does one describe it??

Thanks ARR...

- Sunil

Re: [arr] S.J Surya on A.R.Rahman **** Really Nice**** --- TRANSLATION

2005-12-18 Thread Sunil VG

Aravind, thanks a lot for translating this. The article has some interesting trivia about ARR. Looking forward to the next part. Your effort is much appreciated.

Regards,
Sunil
On 12/19/05, Aravind a.m. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi all,I have attempted to translate this for the benefit of our non-tamil friends:A.R.Rahman is a living legend. He never considers himself to be a genius. But, actually he is a
super-genius.It takes time to actually meet him. So, we might get a different impression of him, before meeting him. But, once we go and meet him, we can understand him.If we meet him and know him, we will start feeling that "we are nothing. Why should we lead a false life? Why cant we be true, like him." Even if our assistant says something to us, we wont feel like "who is he to tell me".
His popularity which started in Tamilnadu, has now spread throughout the world. For his Lord of the Rings play, a very famous singer who is touted as  "Chinese Madonna" came down for recording, to ARR's studio in Subbaraya Nagar, Chennai. Music recording for Hollywood movies have been done here. Times have changed. People used to go to Hollywood to compose for tamil movies - but now, music for hollywood movies are composed here! This also shows the technological advancement... Hollywood is not something great...Rahman shows us that even we can reach that standard!
The new studio that he has set up in Chennai is definitely up to hollywood standards. The re-recording for my movie NEW was done at Autograph Studio, London. This new ARR studio is better than Autograph studio in terms of technology and quality. It is God's boon to me that I get to work with him.
For Ah Aah, he composed all songs in Kodaikkanal. We got the lyrics ready for Varugirai Thodugirai before Rahman started composing. He generally likes composing for pre-written lyrics. Even for "Sakkarai Inikkira Sakkarai" from NEW, the lyrics were written first by Vali and then Rahman composed the tune. Rahman changed few words in those lyrics to suit the tune. This shows his command over tamil language. The changes/additions he makes to lyrics are very sweet and poetic. These are all just a few examples of his brilliance. I sometimes wonder, why I shouldn't ask him to pen the lyrics for a song!
Tamil consists of 3 basic elements - literature, music and acting. Though Rahman is an expert at the first two, he is very bad the the last one.. Yes.. This man can't act. He always portrays his true self.
If we dont like a tune that he has composed, we need not hesitate or think too much - we can just speak to him openly about this. He'll say "okay. i'll try"... But, if he is very confident about the tune, he'll say "no.. we'll go with this.. this will work"... And, that one will definitely become a super-hit!
The best example for this is "thottal poo malarum" song. Something really interesting happened...(contd...)The remaining portion of this will be available in the next issue of Kumudam. I will translate that too :)

[arr] Is There No End?

2005-12-13 Thread Sunil VG

Is there no end to the waiting? As torment turns to anger,This is the question I'm asking
I live a fan's worst timesWaiting for RDB has made me,Scribble these nonsensical lines
Am I paying the price oh Lord? For helping fight piracy,& buying original CDs I couldn't afford
Life out of India I've come to hateDesperate for the gems from The GeniusI wait and wait and wait
Is there no end to the waiting? As anger turns to prayers,This is the question I'm asking...

Re: [arr] no revolution by rahman

2005-12-10 Thread Sunil VG

Hi Wasim,

13 years back people stopped on the streets and were stunned by what they heard in Roja because it was a breakthrough album. It changed the way many of us looked at music. For many including me, it changed the whole concept of music. ARR changed it for us. Today, the technology and technique that he introduced is widely used by everyone. Even then, as a person who listens to all good music regardless of who composes, I strongly believe that ARR still gves music that's way ahead of its time. Who says there's no revolution happening? Almost every ARR album is a revolution in terms of its diversity in composition, consistency, melodic content and creativity. Even technically, some of his releases were breakthrough albums. Meenaxi for instance. What a masterpiece! Its just that the junta has no time to comprehend the music or to go indepth like they used to in the early 90s.

I haven't heard RDB yet as the CD is not released in my part of the world. Yet I'm sure that each track will be fresh and way different from what is being currently churned out in the name of music. So, don't worry about the revolution. Just enjoy and live the music that this man makes for us. And trust me, the revolution continues...albeit a little quietly...

Sunil

The project - which was started in January after the Asian tsunami that hit Thailand, India,Sri Lanka and Malaysia amongst others - has been extended to help the earthquake victims.17 giants of the Asian music scene are involved in the project including input from hugely
successful composer A R Rahman.Other artists on the single include Sukhwinder Singh, Jaspinder Narula, Shaan, Hans Raj Hans,UK Apache, Am'nico, Dhami (Heera), Channi (Alaap), Djinn, Mistri, E=MC, Shahin Badar, Sumeet,
Surinder Sandhu (sarangi), and Shahbaz Khan (tabla). The track is produced by Mukhtar Sahota.Mukhtar Sahota told Asianinmedia.org: "The idea behind the track was to take a similar approach
as to the Band Aid single but with Asian artists from around the world. Asian music is sodiverse and I felt that if we can bring different music genres, from Eastern and Westerncontinents together, we can make a difference and at the same time the recording could be a
history in the making."Singer Sneha Mistri added: "After seeing the images on TV I just felt lost and helpless withall the suffering going on. So when I was approached to be part of this, I felt a sense of
relief to be able to do something."I hope that we can make a difference, however small because we will always have more thenthose people directly affected in both tragedies."Organisers say all artists gave their time free of charge and the money raised will be donated
to the charities excluding any distribution and retail costs that may apply. The single is due for release on 11th November and is available from HMV and all good Asianmusic outlets, and some crap ones too.

[arr] The Rising CD is Out

2005-11-14 Thread Sunil VG

I was pleasantly surprised to find The Rising DVD in Abu Dhabi. Its a dual language (hind/eng) 2-Disc set with subtitles in English and Arabic. So I assume this is a middle-east edition. Disc 2 has the following:
- The Making "off" (that's how it is spelt!) - Deleted scenes - Premiere Footage - Musical launch - TV Promos - Mahurat The packaging is excellent. But I was a bit dissappointed with the picture quality. It appears squashed from the sides too! And the audio is dolby
5.1. Whatever happened to DTS? Even Kannathil Muthamittal is DTS. Regards, Sunil

Has anyone tried to record vocals and add effects like the ones we hear in

has done experiments in similar lines, please let me know.

RE: [arr] Re: I have Sangamam 24 bit CD

2005-08-08 Thread Sunil VG
To put it in a nutshell, 24-bit audio has better resolution than 16-bit.
Theoretically, the resolution is supposed to be 250 times more! However,
this does not mean that the audio will SOUND 250 times better. In fact, not
all ears will notice a huge difference between a 24-bit and 16-bit
recording. The best part is, when a 24-bit recording is burnt to a regular
audio CD, it is downsampled to 16-bit!

As for ARR, I assume he has started using 24-bit recording with all his gear
in Panchattan & Shafee 5! Perhaps sources close to him can throw more light
on this...

Sunil

[arr] The Rising: Standing Tall!

2005-07-17 Thread Sunil VG
In one sentence - The Rising is a monumental effort by ARR. So authentic and
creative. Now I can understand people getting dissappointed initially. Music
of such brilliance is not heard everyday and the ears that are so used to
the Bunties, Bublies and Bahanays will take time to comprehend the beauty
and sheer genius of Rising. I was transported to another era while listening
to the tracks which have a rustic beauty in them. The Rising is undoubtedly
the most period (if I may) of all of ARR's period soundtracks.

One of the best vocal intros ever from ARR in Mangal Mangal. A delightful
holi song. I don't know why people are cribbing about the Daud beats which
comes only for a few seconds. Rasiya is absolutely mesmerizing. Love the
humming and the part "Bigdi banat banat ban gayi...". Absolutely hanuting
melody and chords in that section. As for Al Maddath Maula, I think ARR has
outdone himself this time. Excellent vocals. You can close your eyes and
feel close to the Creator in this one. And Takey Takey is the most
innovative creation from ARR in a long time. Brilliant song with lots of new
sounds. Sukhwinder's vocal loop is great. Listen to the "Cockadoodledoo" at
1:48!!

I have no words to express my gratitude to ARR for this soulful soundtrack.
Hats off to Javed Akhtar too for some outstanding lyrics.

God bless you ARR...

Regards,
Sunil

RE: [arr] Rahman's name mentioned in Udit's citation

2005-07-13 Thread Sunil VG
Absolutely disappointed with the National Awards results. Meenaxi, Swades &
Bose were all gems. The artcle says Vidyasagar's music in "Swarabhishekam"
was as per the situation in the film and that he mainted traditional
classical music using acoustic instruments for the entire score. Well I
guess that has more value than than absolute originality, creativity and
soulful music that touches your heart!!!

So much of effort by ARR and absolutely no recognition for his genius. I can
understand him not getting all the rigged popular awars from Zee, Filmfare
etc. But this is totally disappointing.

RE: [arr] Re: ARR&MUSIC! (a possible answer to spiteful badmouthing of ARR)

2005-05-23 Thread Sunil VG
Dear Sahil,

First of all, thanks for sending this mail. Hats off to you for expressing
your thoughts so beautifully and intelligently. It was the most moving mail
I have read in a long time. I hope someday ARR finds enough time to read
your mail!

It is evident that you FEEL his music and not merely listen. Over the years,
I feel I have grown with his music which has matured and reached a stage
where one wonders, how can he ever make this any better? Before you know it
he composes a Meenaxi, then a Swades and then a Bose and answers your
question. While we are left to absorb the subtle complexities of his
creations, he moves on with his quest. Here's a legend who is perhaps the
most underrated ever, probably because he achieved so much at his age.

Regards,
Sunil

I'm not sure of the other things, but I certainly agree with your following
lines:

"why dont u compose an album bigger than vande
mataram and jan gan man. i suggest when u do so... please put in a
few bharatiyar songs for ur tamil fans..!!! "

I think its high time ARR worked on his album. And doing a couple of
Bharatiyar songs would be like icing on the cake. I really hope ARR notices

Bharathidasan,

Thanks for the informative mail. A couple of questions for you - how do you
find the mega voices on Motif in comparison to the progs on TS? I've heard
that the guitar strumming is pretty realistic. I don't find this in the TS.
Also, how do you measure latency so precisely? I could be in dinosaur age

Re: [arr] Finally, BOSE promos are out!

2005-04-12 Thread Sunil VG

In Dubai, it was available in Music Land, which I believe is in Bur Dubai,
the bazaar area. I'll try to get the details from my friend who always gets
his ARR CD from there. In Abu Dhabi it is available in Victory Video, which
is inside the Bhima Jewellery shop (for some reason!) on Hamdan Street, next
to UAE Exchange.

Interestingly enough, the moment the owner of Victory Video sees me or my
wife enter the shop, he shouts from the counter "No new ARR releases"!! We
constantly bug him after every ARR release!! :-)

Sunil

2005-04-10 Thread Sunil VG

Ganesh, where do you live in UAE? I'm in Abu Dhabi and Bose CD was available
from March 24th. In Dubai it has been available since March 21st, according
to a friend.

By the way, that was a wonderful post about how Rahman composes. Very well
written...

RE: [arr] How does he do it? How does Rahman DO IT?

2005-04-10 Thread Sunil VG

Its amazing isn't it? Last night, we were listening to PP, KM, KK, AE, etc.
One cannot help but think about how ARR is able to create so much...album
after album, year after year. Why does his music touch you like nothing
else. Is there something wrong with you or is everything just too right with
his music?

I know exactly what you feel when you are trying to compose. Sometimes its
so frustrating. Not being able to get a melody that you believe will move
people. ARR has raised the bar to unbelievable dizzy heights. And to know
that he beats himself each time. There's a lot more to ARR than his
unprecedented talent, knowledge, technical wizardry, wisdom. Spirituality?
That could be the key. As H. Sridhar mentioned in a recent interview, it
must be amazing to see a different ARR emerging after his prayers, going to
his studio and creating history. I can visualize the glow on his face,
knowing that there's a power that will guide him through the next challenge
too. Of course, in all his humility, ARR has always attributed his success
to God. For me, he is the Chosen One.

I think the majority of us will never know exactly how ARR composes, and I
don't mean just the technical approach. It is so intriguing. If there's a
way we could know, without stepping into his privacy, it would be wonderful.
I know there are many composers in this Group like Rano, Shyam, Prashant,
Sam, Ashwin, etc. How has your experience been when you are sitting in front
of your keys?

Sunil

RE: [arr] Des Ki Mitti Lyrics Needed

2005-04-09 Thread Sunil VG

Just realized how beautiful the lyrics are.was too busy with the music
to notice :-)

Mujhe yaad aati hai
Mujhe yaad aati hai...
Apne des ki mitti ki khushbu
Mujhe yaad aati hai
Apne des ki mitti ki khushbu
Mujhe yaad aati hai

Kabhi behelati hai
Kabhi thadpati hai
Kabhi behelati hai
Kabhi thadpati hai
Mujhe yaad aati hai...oh...
Apne des ki mitti
Apne des ki mitti ki khushbu
Mujhe yaad aati hai

Beete pal choone lagien hain dil ko aise
Dost rakhe haath kandhe pe jaise
Kaisi yeh kiranein aisi chan rahin hain
Kaisi tasveerien aisi ban rahin hain
Kitnein mausam yaad mein hain aate jaate
Baarishayi khul gayen hein kalay chaate
Din hain alsaaye huye jo aayi garmi
Sardiyon ki dhoop mein hai kaisi narmi
Pal pal ik samay ki nadiya hai jo beheti jaati hai

Apne des ki mitti ki khushbu
Mujhe yaad aati hai...

Pighale tanhaayiyon ke hain jo andhere
Jagmagane se lagein hai kitne chehrey
Ek lori hai ek laal bindiya
Laut aayi hai mere bachpan ki nindiya
Woh koyi ik taarey pe kabse gaa raha hai
Koi aanchal jaaney kyoon lehera raha hai
Har ghadi mein baat ek yaad aa rahi hai
Dil mein pagdandi si jaise ban gayi hai
Yeh pagdandi mere dil se mere des jaati hai

Apne des ki mitti ki khushbu
Mujhe yaad aati hai
Apne des ki mitti ki khushbu
Mujhe yaad aati hai
Mujhe yaad aati hai...

RE: [arr] Some of ARR's best work in last two years

2005-04-06 Thread Sunil VG

Ajith,

I totally agree with you. ARR's music in all the classics you mentioned has
been thoroughly underrated. Its very painful when songs like "Sarfaroshi ki
tamanna", "Mujhpe toofan", Rang hai", or "Yeh jo des hai tera" doesn't get
the kind of acceptance that they truly deserve. I think one can safely
attribute the reason to the films themselves not being exactly of the
mainstream nature. Unfortunately the majority still dig "paisa-wasool"
films. Just imagine where ARR's music would've reached if a Meenaxi or a
Tehzeeb had become a major box office hit! Bose will definitely be a film of
epic proportions, but I don't expect it to become a commercial
super-success. Of course, that doesn't make me any less impatient for the
release of Bose! I think, despite the negative review that was posted
sometime back, I think it will be a brilliant film. For now I'm just
drowning myself in the soundtrack of Bose

Sunil

RE: [arr] Will Benegal use all songs without cut in BOSE

2005-03-30 Thread Sunil VG

My guess is that Benegal will not be using the songs in full. Except maybe
"Kadam kadam" or "Hum Dilli Dilli Jaayenge". I know most of us wouldn't be
happy to see the songs fading in and out in parts. But that's the kind of
film Bose is. I totally trust Benegal's judgement on that. I'm just glad
that he decided to have a soundtrack released with this film! And what a gem
it's turned out to be. Right now I'm falling in love with the subtle piano
work in "Des ki mitti". Note the keys accompanying Sonu from 3:54 to 4:02.
Sometimes its these simple touches that makes a composition so brilliant.
ARR is just getting better and better...

[arr] Ekla Chalo

2005-03-26 Thread Sunil VG

Ekla Chalo is such a sweet and soothing melody. Does anyone else feel that
the backing vocals ("") when Sonu sings "Tanha raahi..." is
in reverse? Its appears in the beginning of the song between 0:50 and 1:02
but is much more pronounced between 5:00 and 5:30. Amazing harmony there. I
somehow get the feeling its done in reverse. Or am I getting too much of
"Zikr" and going into a trance?! There's something mystical about the
"Allahooo..." loop. What a song! What a soundtrack! I have no words to
describe what I feel when I listen to BOSE.

ARR, Thank You!! (for lack of better words)...God bless you...

Regards,
Sunil
