Tech credits are solid, with the film representing the American debut of Indian
superstar film composer A.R. Rahman ("Slumdog Millionaire"). His is an
efficient though relatively unmemorable job, the only hint of his Indian roots
coming in the almost superfluous sequences involving Reno's "couples whisperer."

A R Rahman’s first post-Slumdog project, Couples Retreat, is a complete waste
of his talent; the music is deep in the background and does nothing to enhance
the film

Why did Rahman take three months, composing sounds which hardly matter in the
film? Why did the producers hire him from the pool of composers in Hollywood?
Was Rahman supposed to add prestige to what was perceived as a weak project?
And why did Rahman accept this film as his first post-Oscars project? Was it
just for money? And is money
that important for Rahman at this stage in his life and career?

These are questions that all of his fans should be asking.

Agreed with you Jemsheed. I still remember those old days when people never
used to attempt ARR songs in stage shows as they know that it would be a
complete mess and its not that easy to sing. But nowadays some songs can be
easily hummed by anyone. But it doesn't mean that ARR has ran out of his
standards.

I strongly feel that earlier we had less means to hear music. A song can be
heard only once from home a day. Because we will be busy with our works and we
cannot carry our tape recorder everywhere. So it gained soul and lasted long.

But when Ipods. Mobiles, Car stereos and various other means came in, we are
listening ARR songs everywhere. When we travel in Cars, songs are played in car
stereos, when we work Ipods are beside. So definitely when we are repetitively
playing some songs in loop. It sounds repetitive and we will definitely skip
the albums so fast, and wait for the next one to release. We cannot complain us
or ARR regarding this matter. Because as a human being like us, he doesn't know
how to satisfy different music listeners of different taste.

A music producer can do anything from making coffee to just
sitting back and listening. That sounds like an easy job, and it can be. When
you have a great recording engineer doing the recording, and great artists and
musicians around you creating great music a producer's job becomes very easy.
But when you are on a budget with very limit studio time, a busy schedule, a
singer that keeps messing up the vocal track because he/she is nervous, the
drummer that can't get the groove right, a recording engineer who can't get the
computer to record the next track your job as a producer becomes a lot more
challenging. And this is what being a good producer is being about. At these
moments a producer needs to be a problem solver and make decisions. Every
producer does it differently, but the result is the same, a recorded and well
produced song.

To be able to make it work a producer may have to get involved with the
technical stuff and help the recording engineer out. Or you may have to get the
singer to make the vocal track work with the song by changing the lyrics,
changing the melody or give some vocal pointers. It may also involve rewriting
part of the music by changing chords, adding samples and sound effects and
creating a complete new drum rhythm from scratch. And there are a lot of other
situations where a good producer needs to take charge and show why he (or she)
is the producer.

Being a producer can involve

Getting into the music (music theory)

Getting into the songwriting process and learning about songwriting and
sequencing

Knowing some things about recording

Being able to work with musicians and artist and get the best out of them

Working with a recording engineer and other studio owners

Using sound effects, samples and other techniques to make song sound different
and unique

Mixing and editing the song

Mastering the song

In today's music the producer is usually also a songwriter, a musician and
recording engineer. This makes the job both easier and more difficult.

O Saya clip was played in these stations.
Ryan Seacrest was also mentioning about ARRs music.
Is anyone here interested for a gathering in/around LA /Ventura county ?Or we
fans could just go,pose before Kodak theater and celebrate SDM music ?
Anyone game for it ? Mail back !

On the other hand, the American Academy awards are still a wistful dream, and
considered the ultimate arbiters of excellence here. And what makes Slumdog
Milionaire especially complicated is the hybrid nature of it. Based on an
Indian novel, shot in India with real slum kids, set to A.R. Rahman's music,
featuring Bollywood vets Irfan Khan and Anil Kapoor in important roles, it
confounds the usual cultural categories and expectations. This peculiar
insider-outsider dynamic makes Basu's “it's just a Danny Boyle movie” logic a
hard sell here, even as it ensures India's emotional investment in the film.

[arr] A.R. Rahman's 43rd birthday a low key affair

2009-01-06 Thread Tamiliniyan
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200901061824.htm

New Delhi (PTI): A.R. Rahman turned 43 on Tuesday as television and FM channels
played special programmes to mark the day but the music maestro said the
celebrations were low key due to Muharram. Speaking at the South India launch
of a mobile phone, Rahman said the day was usual for him and there were not
much celebrations as the Muslims mourn during the month of Muharram.

Many radio and television channels played his hits from films that included
"Roja", "Bombay", "Dil Se", "Rangeela", "Taal", "Lagaan", "Rang De Basanti",
and the more recent "Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa", "Yuvvraj", "Ghajini" and "Slumdog
Millionaire". The last year was an eventful one for Rahman as he earned a
Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score for his music in British
director Danny Boyle's film "Slumdog Millionaire" besides many other
achievements.

"Slumdog Millionaire", however, is not Rahman's first global venture. He had
composed for Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Bombay Dreams" and a stage adaptation of
"Lord Of the Rings".

Rahman began 2008 with Ashutosh Gowarikar's "Jodhaa-Akbar" and went on to score
chart topping numbers in films like "Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa", "Yuvvraj",
"Ghajini" and "Slumdog Millionaire".

His latest track "Jiya Se Jiya" is another attempt from the composer to send
out the message of love and peace after his "Vande Mataram". This year Rahman
fans will hear his compositions in "Dilli 6" and "Blue".

which adds intensity to the richness of the visuals.

-- I wondered just where director Danny Boyle found such talented child actors.
It turns out that the child actors are actually from the slums, and the
producers have cleverly built into the children’s monetary compensation the
precondition that they must complete their schooling until age 16. Kudos to the
team for doing their part to better the lives of this precocious bunch.

But sorry to say, this is not making me happy,  as the posts nowadays are more
of allegations, comparisions and baseless topics.
I know we all are here to Enjoy ARR's Music and have constructive
comments (if any), so I request all non ARR fans to please restrain from
posting any comparisions of ARR with other MDs. As every MD is unique, this
group is only for ARR's Music.
Hope you all agree with me..

[arr] Best sound track...

2006-05-27 Thread Tamiliniyan

http://arrahmaniac.blogspot.com/2006/05/first-rose.html     Roja:Though he is renowned as the preeminent composer of modern Bollywood, A.R. Rahman was born and still works in Madras, 1,000 miles south of Bombay. His Tamil compatriot, the writer-director Mani Ratnam, yanked him out of jingle-writing to compose his first full score for Roja (The Rose) the tale of a woman whose lover is kidnapped by terrorists. Through this grim political parable, Rahman laced some spectacular melodies that not only serve the drama, they create their own[EM]as in the duet ballads "Yeh Haseen Vadiyan" and "Roja Jaaneman," which first are grounded in recitative, then suddenly ascend into celestial melody. This astonishing debut work parades Rahman's gift for alchemizing outside
influences until they are totally Tamil, totally Rahman. He plays with reggae and jungle rhythms, fiddles with Broadway-style orchestrations, runs cool variations on Morricone's scores for Italian westerns.

Re: [arr] Kalam, Rajnikant, A R Rahman Tamil Nadu's top icons

2006-05-06 Thread Tamiliniyan

Hi Gopal,     The poll is being conducted by CNN-IBN     http://www.ibnlive.com/qotd.php?vote_id=130      ARR INTERVIEW ON IBN LIVE !     May 7th, 9:30pm sounds like a perfect time to cheer people up and set them in the mood for the Assembly elections the next morning. CNN-IBN will be telecasting an interview with A.R.Rahman, Chennai's Pride (yeah, yeah, he's gone far beyond that - more like India's pride. But then, whenever someone one knows becomes really famous, you notice that the neighbouhood Aunties and Uncles, invariably, will be sharing the tiniest bit of news about that celebrity, don't you? Same thing!) - no matter what sort of questions you ask the man, his modesty
always accompanies his answers. Rajeev Masand: Have you ever been embarrassed by the way a song has been filmed? ARR: Yes, a lot of times. But, I guess, the people are intelligent enough now to know all that, what is personal and what is not, and what is done for the movie. RM: Do you think Roja is your best work? ARR: It's probably my first good work. Like I said about Mani Ratnam who gave me my first good work. It brings back all those memories. It gave me the urge to go further and maintain quality work, crossing over to the North Indian audience with the film, lyrics which were never imagined before.Mark your calendar! Gopal Srinivasan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Kalam, Rajnikant, A R Rahman Tamil Nadu's top icons       New Delhi, May 06: President A P J Abdul Kalam, Kollywood superstar Rajnikant and young music composer A R Rahman have been voted the 'biggest icons' of Tamil Nadu in a media survey. The trio, who were chosen from a list of six eminent personalities from the state, bagged 18 per cent votes each out of the over 5,000 polled in the on-line survey conducted jointly by a private TV channel and a newspaper. The other bigwigs who included in the list were versatile actor Kamal Hassan, chess legend Vishwanathan Anand and cancer specialist and Magsaysay Award winner V Shantha. Anand and
Shantha received 16 per cent votes each, while Kamal Hassan got the nod from 15 per cent of the respondents.http://zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=293280&sid=NAT YAHOO!
