Hi, I have posted video footages and the photos at the following url: http://www.stanford.edu/~kicha/arr.html The video footage is shaky but its worth the download just for the audio. I spoke to one of the student organizer after the show. It apppears they have recorded the complete show. I will try to get the complete coverage. The person who interviewed Rahman at the show (Natalie) has a Ph.D in EthnoMusic. She has studied bollywood music in great detail. I spoke to her after the show. She mentioned that she is a silent member of the egroups. We had a brief but interesting conversation about Rahman. I asked her if she is going to write a book on Rahman. She said that she is planning to study Rahman's music in detail (her current research is about bollywood music) and that she might publish something (Natalie please confirm if you are reading this). There were other interesting tidbits, some of them were already covered by other people who attended the show (I couldnt meet all of them). Just wanted to post my view, since some of us now started to compare ARR with other MDs. I was listening to Pudhupettai. No doubt it is an experimental album by YSR stanadrs. But if you just carefully pay attention to the composing efforts, there simply isnt any match to what naturally ARR does in each and every album. For instance, there isnt any improvisation in trance or the hip hop loops used in the songs. He simply took the standard trance and hip hop loops and spinned a tamil song out of it. It sounds new, but invidiudal composing efforts arent much. Consider this with What Rahman did for "Oru theivam thantha poovey", "Hey goodbye nanba" and "Fanaah". The effort he has put in is simply mindblowing. Goodbye nanba, has a fantastic mix of Jazz and trance. Im not sure if anyother MD has ever attempted it. The trance elements used in all these songs are unique not a simple rip off. You could sense that the trance effect was custom made for these songs. In the case of other compositions i could only sense that the trance plays in the background and someone sings in tamil in the foreground. There is nothing new in the musical themes with the exception of heavy influence of WOHE. I cant imagine any other single MD in india currently capable of doing "1857 - the rising", "Ayautha Ezhuthu" and "Boys". We fail to realise how difficult is to create period music, do something new that is never done before, make it sound fresh and not jaded, and also make it fit to the movie. That demands quite a talent. We got so used to Rahmans quality, that sometimes we fail to realize all the minor details and the efforts he puts in to these kind of muisc. I always sense a big void whenever i listen to some other MD composition. My ears are so used to ARR standards. One thing for sure. You missed Azhagana rasatchiye, the best of the album for me. Uppu karuvadu had a very nice folk touch and was massive hit. I dont think Mudhalvans music was the weakest link for ARR shankar combo. This would be my order of preference for ARR-Shankar combo. 1) Kaadhlan (All songs) - classic 2) Indian (Telephoen manipola, Maya machindra,Pachai killigal) - Maya machindra was Quite unconventional for Rahman at that time. Gives a unique feel. 3) Gentleman (En veetu thottatil, Ottagatha) - En veetu thottail still gives goosebumps. Awesome lyrics and melody. 4) Mudhalvan (Azhagana rasatichiye, Kurku siruthavely, uppu karuvadu) 5) Boys - Rocking melody in Enaku oru girlfried, rest were weak. 6) Jeans - Excepting Kannodu kanbathellam rest were weak. BGM was however awesome. Jeans was a complete washout to me. All of the songs with the exception of Kannodu Kanbathellam had instant appeal but did not stick out in the long run. Some might disagree with Boys. Boys was above and beyond my expectations when i first listened. It was a revolution for tamil music. But i guess it greatly misses haunting melody for a long shelf life. Rahman's new, nine-minute anthem that he co-wrote with Blaaze, his friend and a composer who worked with Rahman in "Kisna" too. The star musician unveiled it in New Delhi this past week. The reason he calls it an anthem is that it is created for the cause of poverty alleviation and patients suffering from tuberculosis across the world. Rahman is the global ambassador for the Stop TB campaign. The `Mozart of Madras' as he has been dubbed, joined hands with Pakistani musical band Junoon and the Indian group Indian Ocean to unveil the anthem at a Poverty Concert to kick-start the People's Summit Against Poverty, a campaign organised under the flagship of Global Call for Action Against Poverty - GCAP - timed before the U.N. World Summit that takes place between September 14 and 16. With this concert Rahman becomes the first musician to pen an international poverty anthem. There is more to this concert than meets the eye. It is a sustainable campaign that has formed a coalition called Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (Don't Break the Promise campaign) joined by several community and faith groups, trade unions, celebrities and individuals. It will be a reminder to the Indian Government to fulfil the promise made in the National Common Minimum Programme and the 10th Five Year Plan about ending poverty. Watching this extremely shy musician who is a picture of modesty is a study in itself. He isn't one who to twitch his nose and muffle it with a hanky while entering the office of NGO Sahasi at Mangolpuri in Delhi. In this room meant to take care of TB patients, filled with malodour, he sits stoically and listens to their problems, though he can't answer them as he is not well versed in Hindi. His entry makes women break into the strains of "Hum Honge Kamyab". They apply a tilak, there is a garland to welcome him. And there are smiles on the faces of men and women. But soon the event turns into a media-Rahman rendezvous rather than an occasion for the people to meet Rahman. "Will he do something for us", "If he gives us medicine and money, only then I will understand that he is here for a cause", "The doctors don't give us medicines," ladies of the area raise their voice. Rahman isn't able to convince them that the poverty concert he is here for is to voice their concern only. He could only manage to say in Hindi "Aap concert main ayaga na? Main wahan gana gaunga, sab aana... " But soon one notices that it is not just a token visit. He is here to provide ample time to listen to them in a separate room, stinking and hot though it may be. He talks to a weeping girl banished from school because of contracting tuberculosis, checks her medical card and DOTS doses, talks to an old man and sings for them his latest hit "Mangal Mangal" from "Mangal Pandey". Real man A long meeting and Rahman is back in his air-conditioned car. It is imperative to see if he is actually affected. "This is not the first time with me. I have been going to remote places of Gujarat, Bengal, etc. It is always good to meet people through an NGO. This way the cause gets noticed. Moreover, to help them in an individual capacity you need a lot of infrastructure. I have tried to interact with the financially weak in my personal capacity at home, but it is usually unmanageable." He recalls an incident at home: "On the 27th day of Ramadhan I was giving zakat (alms in cash or kind) last time. When I came out of the house, I was shocked to see some 3000 people gathered outside. When I tried to distribute, people jumped on each other to grab it. They jostled and snatched it from each other. It created mayhem. So much so that we had to close the door and call some really deserving people like the handicapped, the very old and ailing ones, one by one and hand over the zakat. I was moved. It is a shame for our country that one out of four people goes to bed hungry." dear members, a lot has been discussed about mani ratnam finding ar rahman. but the only film that was released with the name AS Dileep Kumar was the malayalam movie "YODHA" starring mohanlal and madhubala. I am sure this movie was released before ROJA. Now if this is true..then can it be that santhosh sivan introduced ARR to mani ratnam just a doubt... and if arr got introduced to mani first...why did he allow sivan to use his name dileep kumar in the titles..and not Mani ratnam? can somebody please clarify this doubt. sajit Yahoo! How could you miss Iruvar, Narumugaye from Iruvar is one of his all time best classical. To me Rahman has got nothing to prove. He has done everything, but he continues to explore music..thatz what amazes me listening to each and every album of his...He continues to explore new frontiers..which other MD dared to touch. he has never allowed himself to settle on anything.. I have no reservations in saying that He has done more experimentations than what all other Music composers in india have done so far (that includes IR, but lets not take away the credits from them too.., but no one has covered such a vast spectrum as Rahman has done). You just need a sensitive ear to listen to the intricacies and improvisations that he does in each and every album. >From a person who rarely listen to music, i have now grown up to a state where i have started to have liking for all kinds and classes of music. Rahman is the one who exposed to me all musical frontiers through his music.. Though i try to listen to other music, nothing quenches and gives a complete fullfilling feeling like Rahmans music. There is really something fullfilling about each and every composition of his.
