AJ, I am also seeing lot of positive reactions on the net, but there are
also negative remarks...the fact i am unable to digest is that there is no
instantly hummable tune in this album. Kata Kata had huge expectations from
me, but this song sounds to me like a fun song with lot of variations in
beat and singing. the structure and variation being changed in AR's songs is
seen nowadays a lot. It irritates the listener and makes him think that
where the song is going. Beera is good but short. lot of beera beera
repetitions, they could have made the song longer with 2 stanzas. I have bn
following ARR form 92 so i am used to this initial not liking, and then
getting impressed. But still, I feel this album is a disappointment. It
makes me wonder whether is this the combination which gave Vellai pookal,
pachai nirame, Dilse, Bombay, thiruda thiruda to the world.

I respect your initial impressions, but please give it some time and try to
 avoid conclusive statements for now.

This album is not going to be liked by everyone. You're right, the song
melodies and structures for the most part are complex and not
straightforward, which may not be everyone's preference.

Some pretty extreme first impressions I'm seeing on the net...but, most
comments are positive and many saying it's one of ARR's finest works.

will like it with more hearings. Very Average score by ARR for a Mani movie.

 Friends,

It is that time when a new album from our boss is releasing. Makes me get
into a reflective mood in terms of how do I listen to a new album from ARR.
I primarily can think of 3 approaches/patterns under which I listen to a new
album. Let me know what you guys think.

Approach 1: Take the album listen to all the songs at one stretch and then
repeat the same process. Advantage I found of this is that you listen to all
the songs at one shot, but disadvantage is that first 2-3 times I feel
completely lost. I follow this pattern a lot.

Approach 2: Take one song at a time, listen to it a few times and then only
move to the next song. This I rarely follow. Advantage is, it helps you
internalize one song at a time. But disadvantage is it takes lot of patience
 and effort !

Approach 3: Listen to entire album once, pick the ones that stand out right
away and stray towards them. I find this most suitable approach and I easily
follow this path. But, downside is that I naturally tend to neglect some
songs and never truly enjoy them unless I revisit the album later. This is
 most preferred approach for me.

So guys, what do you think ? I am curious to know how others do this.

Re: [arr] Review of VTV Lyrics (Average). What's your opinion ???

2010-03-17 Thread Srinivasa Krishnan
The lyrics are perfect fit for the movie.. Lyrics should reflect the mood of
the movie and it happened very well in VTV..

This is the second time, Thamarai is working with ARR..

She worked in Thenali for Injarungo and had won a Tamilnadu State Award for
Best Lyricist.

On Sun, Mar 14, 2010 at 2:35 PM, jayram m.n jayram...@yahoo.com wrote:

I admire and enjoy some of the good songs written by Thamarai. She has
given some memorable pieces like Suttum Velli Sudarey from Ghagni, Kangal
irandal from Subramanyapuram and so many others. The list is pretty long.

But my overall impression is that the lyrics in VTV was kind of average
 lyrics (or below average).

 (1) Hosanna and Ommna Penne - Both these songs can be remembered without
any lyrics, because of the catchy tune, main tag-word selected for the
 songs.
 (2) Vinnaithaandi varuvaya and Manipaaya - Better lyrics with good flow of
words in both these songs. Definitely promising.
 (3) Anbil Avan : Okay lyrics (most of the lyrics consists of rehashed
marriage oaths which is a cool idea).
 (4) Kannukul Kannai : Sounds more like a dialogue rather than a poem.
 (4) Since I don't understand Malayalam, I cannot say much about Aromale
lyrics. But from the translation that appeared in this forum, the lyrics
 sounds quite impressive and imaginative.

She has definitely struggled to write the songs for VTV. Perhaps she needs
to work more with ARR Sir to understand his style of composition and tunes
 to give much better lyrics.

Sorry for being little bit harsh with my review, but I expect more
memorable lyrics Thamarai (especially with ARR Sir).

  After

cop flicks and psycho thrillers Gautham
Vasudev Menon seemed all set to make you
fall in love, with love. In the end however
you have to say that he has managed to
  do quite the opposite.

  Karthik (Silambarasan) an aspiring film
director, falls head over heals in love
with Jessie(Trisha) at first sight. The
problem? He is a Hindu, she is a conservative
Malayali Christian, she has a job and
is settled while he is still at the crossroads
of life, trying to find a footing in cinema,
having given up his studies already and
to top it all she is a year older than
  him.

Despite having a great recipe for a classic
romantic flick Gautham gets it all wrong.
For starters this movie is a big time
overdose of romance with very few enjoyable
moments that you would like to relive
over and over again. The initial sequences
between the lead pair seem so artificial
and contrary to the voiceovers Karthik
gives at many points during the film.
There is no real chemistry between them,
at least for most part. It may be safe
to blame the writing for this which summed
up in one word is, unimaginative.

  To
top that there is nothing innovative about
the script and the meandering screenplay
just makes things worse. After a point

some genuinely good moments towards the end.

However to Gautham's credit no one would have
foreseen the twist in the climax. Yes it was practical
and had that element of surprise but does he expect
the viewer, subjected to almost 3 hours of romance,
romance and more listless romance to walk out of the
theatre having been swept off their feet?

Performances wise Trisha single handedly lifts the
film up. Sexy and classy she easily manages to overshadow
Silambarasan. Cinematography is one big reason why
this movie passes muster. Very surprisingly there
is very little to write home about AR RAHMAN's background
score but he sort of makes up for it in the songs.

If only this movie had more than just love in it (Some
healthy humor for example), if only it had packed
in some more interesting events to get rid of the
dryness, if only it had not been so long, if only...if
only..There are just too many of them.

It would be nice if the Sydney concert DVD includes Best of all Jai Ho
concerts as some songs that were missing in Sydney, but performed in other
Jai Ho's can be included in the DVD.. In this case, the DVD can be titled as
ARR's Jai Ho Tour or something like that..

Just a suggestion.. :)

 T K Karthik

With some of the hottest numbers in town, including two biggies from Baba,
MCA kid-cum-playback singer, T K Karthik, is the latest hit with Tamil
filmdom's music directors. Karthik comes from a family of bathroom singers.

When in college, he arranged to meet singer Srinivas, who happens to be his
best friend's cousin. To me, he was big. I am a fan of A R Rahman and
Srinivas was his singer. He asked me to sing and liked what he heard.
Srinivas eventually turned out to be Karthik's link to Rahman, he says.

He remembers the dates well. It was December 17, 1999. Until then, I had
never stepped out of home after 8 pm. But that night, my friends and I had
planned a midnight birthday party for a friend. It turned out that Rahman
wanted me to sing a number that night, and Srinivas kept calling home. It
was about 11-45 pm. My parents couldn't reach me. Srinivas finally told them
that if I was lucky, I would call him in 10 minutes. Otherwise... Somehow, I
got in touch with home and called him immediately. It was past midnight on
December 18''. He was just in time in Rahman's studio for the recording.

Rahman was like my demi-God, and there he was... in front of me. I was
nervous but Rahman helped me, cracking jokes and all. He is a lot of fun
when you know him personally. He had been called for a chorus track for
Pukar, which somehow was not released. It's a good sentiment, isn't it.

From then till about two years, I was doing only choruses for Rahman. It
got me very popular in college. On January 31, 2001, Rahman asked me and
others in the group to sing an Aalap. Next day, he called me to record for
Nendikitten from Star. It was his first solo. Karthik has since then done
tracks for Ilayaraja, Harris Jayaraj, Karthik Raja, Yuvan Shankar Raja,
Bharadwaj, Vidhyasagar, Deva and others. Most often though, he's not told
which movie or actor he is singing for. But when I was singing for Baba, I
knew I was singing for Rajnikanth and was very conscious. I had to get it
 right.

 Source- The Hindu, Aug 2002

If you ask T K Karthik what the best part about being a playback singer is,
he will talk about the countries he got to see...not the 40-odd film songs
he has sung covering Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada movies or the bunch of
numbers under his favourite music director A R Rahman. Tuning into Karthik
is not very difficult. He is the boy next door, 22, once a part of a college
band, who gradually shifted from college audi to Rahman's studio as a chorus
 member.

I just had one recording a month in the whole of 2000, he recalls. But
lots of stories to tell his friends after the experience. For this DG
Vaishnav College student, things started changing after he met singer
Srinivas. I used to keep in touch with him and he used to give me a lot of
pointers. says Karthik. He took the tips seriously and it wasn't long
before Srinivas put him onto Rahman.

But when Karthik sang Nendikitten in Star, he didn't know what was
happening. I was singing the track and had no clue if Rahman would use my
voice, he says. Rahman finally clued him in and Karthik's solo singing
career took off. Karthik insists life has always been like that for him -
unplanned. He learned Carnatic music for a year and then discontinued. Then
he joined ghazal classes. Now, it is Hindustani classical music for him, his
teacher being noted singer Sriram Parasuram. I was always passionate about
Hindustani music, he says. So after 13 years Karthik is learning what he
always wanted to. I was raw when when I started, he recalls. My Carnatic
training taught me the fundamentals, singing ghazals helped with voice
culture and Hindustani has widened my pitch and outlook. I think it is never
too late to learn. And all through his parents (absolute music lovers) gave
him all the support they could. They have no clue how a recording happens.
They just see me go out to record and come back with money, he says.

In between the studios and stage shows, Karthik says, he managed to
complete his B Com and is now hoping to finish a Master's at the University
of Madras. Like he said, it's never too late to learn.

Some of his recent numbers are Aval Ulaga Azhagiyae from Laysa Laysa, Vaada
Machan from Run, Maya Maya and Shakthi Kodu from Baba and a number in Five
 Star.

A R Rahman has experimented, quite successfully, with myriad musical
genres. But when it comes to spiritual songs, he likes to leave them
untainted by not adding a lots of bells and whistles and rely heavily on the
 core melody itself.

I don't think any other music director (in Bollywood, if not in India)
has given us more spiritual songs than the maestro. I like to call them
spiritual songs, as opposed to religious or devotional, because although
majority of these songs have either Islamic or Hindu flavor, I find them
universally appealing and elevating. Here's a list of my favorites from this
 genre:

   * Khwaja Mere Khwaja – Jodha Akbar

This song was dedicated to the Hidalwali (Saint of India) Khwaja
Ghareeb-un-Nawaz, and was rendered by A R Rahman himself. He one mentioned
in an interview that this song is very close to his heart, and you can feel
his sincerity in the way he has sung this beautiful song. The soul stirring
instrumental (Oboe) version of this song gives me goosebumps every time I
 hear it.

[Trivia: The lyrics of this song were not written by Javed Akhar - who
wrote all other songs of this movie - but by someone named Kashif.]

   * Arziyan – Delhi 6

Backed by harmonium, tabla and continual gentle claps, this mesmerizing
qawwali is like an ode to the Islamic culture of Old Delhi. Javed Ali, along
with Kailash Kher, does full justice to Prasoon Joshi's meaningful lyrics
 and A R Rahman's magical tune.

   * Piya Haji Ali – Fiza

This was the first Sufi-style qawwali that A R Rahman composed for a
movie. For Khuda ke vali (God's friend) Haji Ali, to be specific. Shaukat
Ali's beautiful lyrics give a glimpse of how Islam, the monotheist religion,
has blended with the local cultures in India: Yahaan hindu muslim sikh isaai
 faiz paate hai.

[Trivia: This song was performed by Ghulam Mustafa brothers, Srinivas
and A R Rahman. Can you identify which lines are sung by Srinivas?]

Apart from the obvious Sufi semblance, muqaddar/taqdeer/kismat is
another connecting link between the aforementioned songs: Arziyan (Marammat
muqaddar ki kar do maula), Khwaja Mere Khwaja (Bekasoor ki taqdeer, tune hai
saNwaari) and Piya Haji Ali (Bigadi kismat aap ke dar par saNwarti hai).

   * Al Maddath Maula – Mangal Pandey: The Rising

Unlike the three songs mentioned above, this one has a high tempo, an
adrenaline rush and a dark tone of impending calamity. Murtuza, Qadir and
Kailash Kher sing this song with a fervor, with intermittent devout
spine-tingling calls to maula by A R Rahman.

[Trivia: Murtaza and Qadir are the same Ghulam Mustafa brothers from
Piya Haji Ali. They also accompanied A R Rahman in Tere Bina from Guru, and
rendered 'Doston se joothi-moothi' in Chupke Se song from Saathiya.]

   * O Paalanhaare – Lagaan

There are actually two versions of this song. One sung by Lata
Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, and the other with an additional female singer.
It's the latter version that was used in the movie (to distinguish the lines
picturized on Gauri and Bhuvan's mother). But I prefer the former one, with
Lata's aging yet divine voice accompanied by mellifluous flute and subtle
sounds of temple bells. Here's the version that was used in the movie.

   * Noor-Un-Ala-Noor – Meenaxi

Written by the great painter and inept director, M F Hussain, this
addictive qawwali raised a controversy because some Muslims got offended (I
think the song uses a phrase from Quran to praise the beauty of a mere
mortal: Meenaxi). And guess who are the singers of this qawwali? Murtaza and
 Qadir again!

   * Man Mohana – Jodha Akbar

As I wrote in my review of Jodha Akbar's music, add Mira's pangs of
separation (from Krishna) to Radha's passion (for him) and you get the
recipe for this devotional song. The way Bela Shende has rendered this
bhajan - her unflattering voice and command over the highs and lows of the
song leaves you wondering why she doesn't get more offers as a singer.
(Isn't Kangna Re from Paheli is her only other song?)

   * Ek Tu Hi Bharosa – Pukar

Lata and A R Rahman joined hands only four times, and the result is
always breathtaking. The tune of this song was originally composed for a
concert in Malaysia and later used for this movie.

   * Zikr – Bose: The Forgotten Hero

   This song

The story is the usual one.. I love ARR's bgm.. He rocks..

When it comes to songs, choreo is a bit bad.. imagine if it was done by
rajusundaram or brindha ...
taxi is good.. The usage of graphics is unnecessary in chinnamma.. or he
must have used them effectively..
hero is dancing, ghosts are flying.. they are not related.. if we compare
this with Porkalam Enge from Thenali which had similar
visuals / themes,KS Ravikumar did justice for the song..

Camera, dts mixing by sivakumar (for the first time, i think), art
direction, rerecording are really good..
the vehicle (story) which carries all these things is a bit weak.. even if
the story is weak, rerecording
takes care of the movie.. i love the first english song..
A technically sound film from a new director..

When ARR's name was shown on the screen, there was a great applause.. ARR
rocks!!!

Sakkarakatti - a musical treat (RR tracks) by ARR.. :)

cost a couple of crores ? Do let me know.

Kala Prabhu's debut vehicle is driven single handedly by one
 driver, A
R Rahman. The credits come on to some amazing guitar riffs and
 mellow
sounds which is completely spoilt by the next ten minutes of the
 movie
showing the hero's childhood pranks with his friends. Cheap,
 uncalled
for and without relevance but maybe the director wanted to fit in a
song - 'Yelle' tracks the progress of the hero and his friends from
  childhood to youth.

The story is a oft repeated and done to death boy sees girl - falls
 in
love at first sight - girl does not reciprocate but later is
 convinced
  - another girl loves the boy - misunderstanding between the boy and
 the
original girl - patch up - second misunderstanding - original girl
pretending to sacrifice her love and asking the boy and second girl
 to
be together - boy mouthing some cliched ' love cannot be measured in
percentages ' dialogues and finally boy and original girl walk into
 the
sunset. That's the story in 2 lines. You still want to go and sit
 in a
theatre for 2 hours ? Maybe yes...

And that's because the driver is cruising full speed and completely
 in
control. No need to wear seatbelts. You are in safe hands. Each song
barring (and this is a personal opinion) the Meenaxi re-hashes are
 an
absolute delight to listen to in Dolby. Pump up the volume !! What's
more, there are almost 3 english tracks as part of the BGM. Two
 tracks
play upto the end of the 1st stanza while the 3rd only plays 4
 lines. R
   B, Hip Hop genres :):)

Ya ! you may not close your eyes and end up seeing the song
picturisations and compare it to the difference in quality between
 an
asterix / tintin comic book to a chacha chaudhary. LOL. The young
director seems to have got his hands on some special effects package
and has gone overboard using them. Or he had plenty of moolah still
left over. A lot of them though are again oft repeated - like the
graphics in 'Marudhani' may remind you of the film 'The day after
tommorow'. 'Chinamma' may remind you of some of Shankar's works
 though
this looks pale in comparision. '

Taxi Taxi' comes on twice, the second one being towards the end as I
guess they reshot the song as an afterthought. I was very happy to
 see
my friend Blaaze on screen in the song. I personally think he has a
 lot
of potential which still remains un(w)rapped -:)

Sakarakkati is strictly for the dozen Shantnoo fans, the dozen
what's her name heroine fans and the millions of A R R fans.

To a question on Kamal's reported remarks that movies should be made

Kamal should ask more numbers from me for Marmayogi.'

at 7 Pm tomorrow in Satyam cinemas, Chennai.

MY SPECIAL THANKS TO ALAN For giving me an invite...

The Film revolves around one man... OUR BOSS He is the sakkarakattti (
The sweeet Cube always ) ... The film is totally dependent on our Boss.

A special request from the Producers of the movie to curtail piracy under
any costs... They have extensively used CG for the songs, and had spent a
lot of money. Lets fight piracy, and not allow any download links in any
 Internet forums ...

Singer Anupama's name should be as Anupama and not Anupama Deshpande..
Anupama Deshpande is from North India.. It might be a typo from the site

music sensation blossomed in the Indian film industry, attracting
 droves of
fans, mesmerized by his melodies. Their chotti si asha is simply to
 have the
pleasure of listening to A R Rahman's music and perhaps, watching him
perform live, and if they were really lucky, say a few words to the
 musical
genius in person. Meet the A R Rahman Fans.
What started off as an e-group, set up by Gopal Srinivasan, a
Bangalore-based consultant, is, today, a veritable database of all
 things
Rahman. From several media interviews to rare recordings of his
 tracks and
the inside information on when a new album will be released, these
 die-hard
fans are truly connoisseurs of Rahman's art. The intent behind
 establishing
this group was straightforward — to use the power of the internet to
 network
with Rahman's fans around the world so that we could share the joy of
listening to his music. In many ways, it is Rahman himself who is
responsible for the popularity of this group — his music and his appeal
cutting across barriers. I am guilty of initially under-estimating the
global reach of his music — little did we realize that we would have
 people
from so many countries across the world joining in, says Gopal
 Srinivasan. And
indeed, today, the e-group has over 13,000 members.
On a rather sultry Sunday evening, a few members of the group in
Bangalore gathered in front of the rose garden in Cubbon Park to
 talk about
their passion. Quite befitting, considering that for most of them, their
love affair with A R Rahman's music began with the film Roja (rose), and
like his music, their devotion to his talent has only increased from
strength to strength. Says Kangan Upadhyay, who works in a software
 company,
We heard the songs of Roja before they were officially released. And
although I didn't know the language, I could relate to those songs.''
And she gives credit to the music director for her superb scores
 in her
II PU exam. At that time, the music of Alaipayuthe was released,
 and I kept
listening to it all the time while studying. I scored 99% in Maths.
 I kept
humming the songs in my mind even as I was writing the paper,'' she
 recalls
  with excitement.
The way Rahman's compositions revolutionized Indian film music is
something the fans immensely respect. He brought in a whiff of
 freshness,''
says Balaji Rajagopal, a chartered accountant. He brought to Indian
 films a
sound which was, until then, only heard in jingles,'' says
 Chandrashekhar
Ganesh, a techie. Earlier, viewers would walk
out of the theatre for a smoke when the songs would come on.
 Rahman's music
changed all that,'' says Gomtesh Upadhyay aka Gomzy, a techie.
He's even a good singer,'' says Vithun Kumar, a BE student. Adds
Shahnawaz Gaffoor, a techie, His music is international.''
Not surprisingly, Rahman's concerts are always a grand event,
 akin to
international acts performing in India. And these fans ensure they
 are there
to watch Rahman live. Most of them took off to Chennai recently,
 when Rahman
performed there for a concert organized by The Times of India. In
 fact, it
was during the 2005 concert in Bangalore when the city's fans met
 each other
in person. They volunteered backstage and even had T-shirts created
  especially for the event.
Rehearsals are when they get to interact with the maestro. Some
 of the
members have even met him at his residence in Chennai. Once, I went
 to meet
him at his place. As he was busy he told me to come the next day. He
 asked
me if I was a non-vegetarian. Since I wasn't, he ensured that vegetarian
food was ordered for me,'' says Prabhu Krishnamurthy, a techie.
During the 2005 concert, they even gifted Rahman a montage of
 all his
album covers, about 94 — both film and non-film scores. It now
 adorns a wall
in his studio. And needless to say, if a fan wants to meet him at the
studio, those from this e-group are allowed right in. Rahman has even
dedicated a colouring book for children, released during the Pray For Me
Brother tour, to the e-group in November, 2007.
The members definitely deserve such a token of appreciation,
 considering
they have taken pains to count the number of musical genres he has
 explored.
According to them, his music spans about 36-38 genres.
The Bangalore-based fans meet up from time to time, if someone
 gets hold
of the latest copy of Rahman's album or a rare DVD of his work. They
  recently

Yesterday was the most memorable day in all the rahmaniacs lives. The
Changing notes concert was held at the st.george grounds. The show was
timed to start by 6.30 and we were there by 4 itself. Thanks to
Mr.Anees(rahman community in orkut) who made it possible by giving five
passes. Eight of us were there and we joined with every possible
 cheer for
  the music god.

The stage was getting its final touchups and the microphone testing was
going on. By 6, the entire ground was filled with die hard rahman
 fans and
the concert started off by 6.45. The first entry of THALAIVAR with
 the high
pitch… jaaghe… made a unknown and an inexpressible feel inside the
 heart
and we all shouted at the top of our voices for our music god.

Then the official first song of the concert was Ellapugazhum which
 had a
great start following a video which symbolized people in distress
 and this
song was like a medicine to all those who were in distress and that too
being the first song, the entire audience were singing the song. Most of
them were singing along for the whole concert.

For each and every song the lightings, set and the background added more
flavor to the concert's feel and enthusiasm. With all rahmaniacs
 besides me,
and all die hard arr fans in the ground I couldn't remember even my
 name at
that time. For those three hours, we were lost in the music ocean of
 rahman.

  The list of songs are:

  1. Guru
  2. Ellapugazhum
  3. Endrendrum punnagai
  4. Vaaji vaaji
  5. Varaga nadhikkarai
  6. Barso re megha

  10. Roobaroo
  11. Munbe vaa
  12. Sandhana thendralai
  13. Nityashree fusion leading to Kannodu kanbadellam
  14. DIL SE RE
  15. Idhayam idam mariyadhe/in lamhon ki
  16. Adhiradee
  17. Chayya chayya
  18. Mix of percussion songs-azeem-o-shah and veerabandi kotayile
  19. Sivamani drums solo
  20. Oru koodai sunlight
  21. Pray for me brother
  22. Bombay theme
  23. Kwaja mere kwaja
  24. Udhaya udhaya
  25. Ai hairathe
  26. Mayya mayya
  27. Maduraiku pogadhadee
  28. Tere bina
  29. Humma humma
  30. VANDHE MATARAM

The singers who were there were hariharan, sadhna sargam, chinmayi,
 javed
ali, mohammed aslam, neethi mohan, Karthick, Madhushree,Rehana, Shankar

All those who were in the concert would have surely experienced the best
ever evening of their life and I'm so haaay that I was also one
 among
them. Those who missed it, really I don't know what to say to them.
 Rahman

[arr] Chennai Concert

2008-04-20 Thread Srinivasa Krishnan
Hi all,

Here are some things i feel special @ the concert:

- Many guys and girls from our fan group wearing ARR tshirts attracted the
public..
- Nithyasree's Kannodu Kaanbadhellaam..
- A new guitarist STEVE in our Boss's team played the prelude for Girl
Friend from Boys..
- ARR's voice in most of the tracks..
- Humma Humma by Shankar Mahadevan, Blaaze and ARR..
- A man from the public was carrying two big photographs (with lamination)
of ARR and he was dancing among the crowd..
Our boss noticed this while singing Dil Se Re..

The sad thing is that the security people didnt allow our members to enter
the seating area..
There must be some recognition for our fan group in such events..
We were standing from 3pm till 11pm.. :((

from Rahman Foundation, and this has been decided by Rahman . For this
purpose, he has decided to do a lot of concerts outside India.

The doubt about what stood for K.M was lingering on the minds of the
crowd who had come over there. One person asked Rahman as to what K.Mstood
for ?. Rahman smilingly replied that it was something sacred, and
  jumped to the next question.

[arr] (arr) Superstar, now Sultan

2008-01-14 Thread Srinivasa Krishnan V
* Superstar, now Sultan * Cinema Soundarya Rajnikant's Sultan The Warrior
promises some romance, some villainy, some comedy – and of course plenty of
action. SUDHISH KAMATH reports PHOTO: S.R.Raghunathan

* Doing dad proud Soundarya * The pointed shoes of a warrior kicks up some
dust. The camera swoops down to the ruins where we spot the lone warrior as
his robe gently flutters in the wind. He brandishes his mighty shining
sword. The camera pans upwards to reveal his face. ItR 17;s Superstar,
looking about 20 years younger, he has an ear-ring and almost meditatively
blinks for half a second. A film by Soundarya Rajnikant, reads the title
card. A low angle shows him raise the sword as he kneels to flash it at the
camera. Cut to the title card which reads: Superstar Rajnikant in and as…We
see him posing right atop a minar, he dives in slow-motion and descends
majestically, like Neo in The Matrix… only that, here the setting is
medieval. And, BlaaZe begins his Sultan rap in English as swordsmen who
probably worked in Frank Miller's 300 try to attack Superstar from all
sides. Next comes the part where they all go flying in different directions,
crashing into bamboo. And a mid-shot shows Superstar swagger towards us in
slow-motion. Speaking different languages

Sultan The Warrior has begun his journey and he'll reach cinemas around
the world speaking in 12 different languages. There's a heroine, there's a
comedian, there's a villain… As an *appa* fan myself, whatever you expect
from his films, I've made sure you will find it in this film too. It's an
amazing feeling directing my father, first-time director and second
daughter, Soundarya Rajnikant told mediapersons at the launch of the Sultan
Trailer 2. The first teaser trailer was out when Sivaji released last
year.

As a father, he was very, very proud. As an actor, he was so understanding.
Initially, we talked about whatever doubts he had and after that, he was
very supportive.

 A. R. Rahman will compose five songs. We will also have one English title
song for which we are trying to rope in an international artiste. Thota
Tharrani has done the art direction. This trailer and the movie will be
executed in Chennai by the 80-member Ocher team in Chennai, she said,
speaking about her collaboration with Adlabs.

Soundarya seemed unfazed by the questions. In the first half of the press
meet, she made sure she covered the vitals: thanked parents, dedicated the
film to her father, boosted the team's morale by introducing them, credited
Adlabs for funding the 10 million-dollar project. Her team had spent the
last six to eight months doing pre-production. And she assured journalists
and fans present at INOX for the launch of the trailer that Sultan would be
technically one of the superior quality films we've seen in India. She
probably saw the questions coming. Will you act? Never in front of the
camera, always behind. Will she direct commercial films? Definitely, by
God's grace. Apparently, Sultan is not rooted in the Ramayana or the
Mahabharata. It's not a story you would've heard before. It is *appa*'s
story, I did the screenplay. It's a fresh script I've animated. It's my
dedication to my father's contribution to the film industry, a daughter's
gift to her father.

'Sultan' will have whatever you've seen my father do, until now, with new
elements added to it… Again, in animation, the sky is the limit. There are
no restrictions, if I want to take the camera and zoom it in 100 km, I can
do it in animation… Since there are no restrictions in possibilities, in
terms of *appa*'s mannerisms and gimmicks in 'Sultan', you can see it a 100
times. There are many 'punch dialogues' in the film, I have written a couple
already.

Offended by a question posed by a journalist earlier (If Soundarya was doing
it to promote her father or her father was doing it to promote her),
Chairman of Ocher, Latha Rajnikant sought to clarify: This is a film that
will make India and Tamil Nadu proud. It gives skilled people an
opportunity, a platform. We are not creating a platform for ourselves, it is
for others. It was too early to reveal more about the story, she said. More
details in December. Watch this space.
