What was movie's budget? It must surely have been less than 25 crore, so how can it be flop? I checked out wikipedia page of the movie for movie's budget and guess what I read - The movie was supposed to be released on February 13, 2009, but A. R. Rahman's continued absence from the project led to a delay in the film getting released. The movie's back ground score remained incomplete and hence a delay in release by one week. what rubbish.. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Vithur vith...@... wrote: DELHI 6 all set to join '30 Crore Flop Club' -- February 28, 2009 6:29:19 PM IST Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network [image: Send to Friend]http://www.glamsham.com/sendlink.asp?page=http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/09/feb/28-delhi-6-all-set-to-join-30-crore-flop-club-020909.asptitle=DELHI 6 all set to join '30 Crore Flop Club' http://www.glamsham.com/movies/stills/1032/1/delhi-6-movie-stills.htm *view DELHI 6 movie stillshttp://www.glamsham.com/movies/stills/1032/1/delhi-6-movie-stills.htm * DELHI 6 has flopped. After an ordinary opening weekend, the film continued to see a steady fall during the remainder of the week. The film has netted just a little above 20 crores in the first week which is quite a low number considering it's huge release. A pretentious film, it's fall was imminent if reactions after the film's premier itself were any indications. In the name of a metaphor (Kaala Bandar), the film only became an indulging exercise that neither turned out to be enlightening nor entertaining. Result was a rapid fall in interest amongst the audience that told the tale as the week progressed. *CHECK OUT: DELHI 6 grosses more than 33 crores worldwide!http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/09/feb/24-delhi-6-grosses-more-than-33-crores-worldwide-020910.asp * With hardly much expected from the second week of the film as well in spite of zero competition on it's way (due to KISSE PYAAR KAROON and SIDDHARTH being the only other releases of the week), DELHI 6 is all set to have a further fall in the second week. Looking at folding up in the vicinity of 30 crores, the film is all set to be third big film in last one year to be labeled as a flop in spite of collections reading 30 crores plus. Other honorable mentions in '30 Crore Flop Club' are CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and TASHAN, both of which starred Akshay Kumar. The film may not impact Abhishek Bachchan much since he has a lot to look forward to in the remainder of the year. Moreover, his career has typically seen a flip-flop of this kind (a flop followed by a hit followed by a flop and so on). Earlier this was seen in 2008 (SARKAR RAJ - Above average, DRONA - DISASTER, DOSTANA - HIT) and now with 2009 beginning on a poor note for him, there could be hopes of a better year ahead. The biggest loss though would be for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra who has now given a flop each with Amitabh Bachchan (AKS) and Abhishek. With DELHI 6 hardly resulting in much appreciation gain for Mehra, it would be interesting to see the next project that he kick starts and it's starcast. http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/09/feb/28-delhi-6-all-set-to-join-30-crore-flop-club-020909.asp -- regards, Vithur

I loved the movie actually... And abt Rehna Tu, it was a surprise element to me as it was sung to Delhi rather than lady love and on second thoughts I relaized that the lyric suit the city well too :-) It was an interesting decision...
[arr] Re: Delhi-6 - Thumbs Down by Taran Adarsh
you are right, the lyrics of Rehna tu don't make sense if meant for father-son relationship either. but here Rishi was not even his father. it was totally shocking, i never thought ROM will spoil it so miserably. i had lot of expectations from him, especially regarding the songs. he completely destroyed the song. shall i say this is the WORST picturization (or placement perhaps) of an ARR song ever?? though i had already mentioned this doubt after i saw Abhishek and Rishi on CD booklet, but that time i thought Rishi would be playing his father. besides Rehna tu, he spoiled all the rest too. masakali is a good example. and why the hell to place Dil gira dafatan there when Roshan did not even start to fall for Bittu?? strange how terribly ROM got it wrong. i am feeling sooo angry. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, V S Rawat vsra...@... wrote: On 2/22/2009 5:25 AM India Time, _Jahanzeb Farooq_ wrote: just watched it. i must say it is not that bad. in fact i liked it. though it is not anyway near RDB but it is a pretty good movie. one thing which really p** me off is how badly they picturized Rehna Tu. oh man i don't believe how badly they spoiled and literally wasted the song. i kept wondering why the HELL they placed it there and why the HELL when Roshan (Abhishek) was with Ali (Rishi), it made no sense at all. to who he was singing rehna tu hai jaisey tu?? i always thought it would be towards Sonam's character. it was completely idiotic. complete waste of a gem of a song. I also was surprised at the Rehna Tu. Though I had already read in this list that this song was to be on father Rishi and Son Abhishek, which was not exactly how the characters were related in the film, but it was parallel enough. Rishi being Abhishek's mom's silent lover 25 year ago can be considered like father to him. The lyrics seems quite odd at places conveying a much greater intimacy than is possible between two persons who had never met till then in their life. Firstly, it was not clear where Abhishek was thinking of changing, which might have prompted Rishi to suggest him not to change. But all that, Mujhe Teri Barish Mein Bheegna Ghul Jana, Mujhe Teri Lapat Mein Jalna, Raakh Ho Jana, appear strikingly odd for a father-son relationship. In India, whatever be the friendship and understanding and belongingness between a father and a son, this relation is always a serious one. So, these figures of speech don't go well. All that Tu Zakhm De agar, Zakhm pe bhi mujhko pyar aaye, dariya o dariya doobne de mujhe dariya mein sound so odd. there is no occassion of Abhishek hurting Rishi, while doobna in dariya is more a concept between lovers than between a father and son. I find this song more suitable for a friend motivating a friend. There are echo of lyrics in the song, that could be counted as an effect, but at around 4:40, I find some female voice also joining, that was unexplainable on the Rishi - Abhishek. And whatever prasoon tried to explain in that haath thaam chalna ho, to dono ke daye hath sang kaise, ek daya hoga, ek baya hoga, tham le, hath ye tham le, chalna sang tham le. that went above my head. Even Mehboob, PK Mishra's such explanations sounded much more short and natural. Even Javed Akhtar's such explanations are more directly related. Could anyone explain plz. You spelled it absolutely right. It would have been better if the song's tone was changed from between two males to from a male to a female and that was Abhishek singing (may be in background) for Sonam character in the film who was under a lot of pressure in the film to change. or, a in female voice it could have been Sonam's idol finale song for Abhishek when he was under a lot of confusion and pressure. -- It only proves that most of film directors are just not capable of visualizing proper placement and piturization of ARR's more subtle songs. The ending 2 min musical piece in this song appears so soothing - like when ARR was giving separate instrumental pieces in albums. -- Rawat

Itâs a full-bodied experience, a visceral trip which completely takes over your senses. For the first one hour you may be even excused for thinking that you stepped into the wrong theatre to watch not a starry Bollywood movie but a beautifully done documentary on Delhi. I-am-an-American Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) brings his ailing grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) to her Delhi house and thus unfolds Chandni Chowk like you have never seen it before. The crowded bylanes, the lumbering cows, the leaning havelis, the reverberating mosques⦠itâs perhaps more energetic, more colourful and more intricate than what Delhi-6 has been for a long time. And just like in Rang De, Mehra puts the story on the backburner and just lets it rip. Pigeons fluttering in the air, kites colliding in the sky, chillies drying on the roof, jalebis frying in the pan⦠Mehra achieves perfection in the rhythm. Stills, staccato, flickering, slo mo⦠the images unfold at their own pace, as if they were born on camera. Sometimes the frames turn into paintings, with smudged shades and muted highlights. Delhi-6 is a sensory tour de force. No surprises then that when Mehra remembers that he has a story to tell, things get rushed. The screenplay (Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey) searches for a problem so that it can solve it. And when it finds one â we wonât spoil it for you â it looks a tad forced and tired. But thereâs so much to likea in the first 90 minutes of the 140-minute film, that you go with the flow, swallow the preachy pill and by the end of it all go seeking the mirror nearest to you. Delhi-6 belongs to A.R. Rahman more than anybody else. He may get the Oscar for another movie, but this is clearly a far better work, a soundtrack so complete that you donât miss a tone. And kudos to cinematographer Binod Pradhan for bringing those songs alive. Not just Masakkali, the promo queen, all the songs are captured with a lot of heart. But if thereâs one that stands out, itâs Dil gira dafatan. You can watch the movie a couple of times just for this one song, replete with tributes to The Aviator and King Kong! Mehraâs ensemble cast provides the punctuation marks in this celluloid collage and each one brings a unique voice. Rishi Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Deepak Dobriyal, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Om Puri, Pavan Malhotra, Prem Chopra, Cyrus Sahukar, Sheeba Chadda, Supriya Pathak, Aditi Rao⦠they all do their bit in making Delhi-6 the address to visit this spring. Watching Waheeda Rehman do the thumka again with a twinke in her eyes is a sight for sore eyes. She is luminous as the grand old daadi, the pillar around which the rest of the cast rallies. She is a bit neglected in the second half but returns at the right time to bring things back in perspective. Perspective is something that sometimes gets lost with Abhishekâs act. Hereâ s an uneven performance which is brilliant in certain scenes and plain ordinary in others. The accentâs there, so is the swagger but the casualness sometimes strays into disinterest and that certainly doesnât help the film. He is at his best in the scenes with Sonam and the kids and totally rocks it in the rap song. Delhi-6 also reintroduces Sonam Kapoor. After what was essentially a wishy-washy debut in Saawariya, where she had to peek out of veils and jump out of wells, this movie allows the dove to spread her wings. There may not be too many she-scenes but Sonam makes the most of the ones she has. Letâs just say, we wonâ t miss Kajol anymore. That vivacity,

I totally agree with you Pavan. He is almost 95% accurate about the BO status of any hind movie. Taran wrote that Ghajini will break all the previous BO records and we all saw that it did. I remember he was wrong on other time.. i guess it was for Mangal Pandey where he gave almost 4 stars (i think) and said that movie will do good. but it bombed at the BO. She wants to retire and spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she was born in. Re: [arr] Re: Delhi-6 - Thumbs Down - Another musical by ARR got wasted
I tend to disagree.. Another classic after RDB by Rakeysh Mehra and the highlight of the film being A R Rahman's music ... A two-liner of the story may give you an impression that it's similar to UTV's earlier outing SWADES, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An American of Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in India. But DELHI 6 bites more than it can chew. Set in old Delhi, the screenplay [Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey] takes its own sweet time to come to the point. But, alas, the problem is that barring a few individualistic sequences, you don't carry the film home. The film is engaging in bits and spurts. Worse, it tends to get monotonous, preachy and boring and the end is so bizarre, you actually want to ask the writers, 'Hey guys, you okay?' Let's cut a long story short: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra misses the bus this time. DELHI 6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first time, to drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire and spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she was born in. In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. But the writing [faulty at times] as also the execution of the material isn't the type that would appeal to all sections of moviegoers. A.R. Rahman's music is outstanding; it's easily amongst his finest works. 'Masakali', 'Ye Dilli Hai Mere Yaar', 'Rehna Tu', 'Maula' and 'Genda Phool' are amazing tracks. Guys - Lets be clear about one thing. Taran;s reviews are all based more from the Box office perspective while Rajeev Masand's reviews are based on a more holistic picture. Either ways, 8 out of 10 times, Taran has got it right in terms of the the possible box office performance of the movie. I COMPLETELY AGREE. What a masterpiece!!! Tears rolled over as I listened, or rather, melted into Arziyan. Every song is so deep, emotion evoking, rich and fabulous! This new year couldn't have been better. It's such an experience to simply melt into each and every one of the tracks in this movie. Now, my contention that ARR should work only with such caliber of directors (Rakeysh, Mani, Danny) is getting stronger and stronger :) I bow down to you sir. Those are the words constantly ringing in my mind right now. The feeling that listening to Delhi 6 has given me is something that is surreal, heavenly, and of inexplicable joy. Rakesh Mehra has given absolute and complete freedom to ARR in rendering songs for Delhi 6 and how it shows! Without further adieu, here is my mini-review of the 10 experiences (I refuse to call them songs) in the order of admiration: Rehna Tu: With the initial few seconds akin to a classy RB and Pop number, ARR begins singing what is, in my opinion, his greatest song in years. ARR has simply outdone himself here. The tune, the strings, the cymbals, the guitar, and above all, the heavenly continuum (the new revolutionary instrument that ARR debuted on his recent American tour) combine to produce an experience beyond words. The last 2 minutes of the song, where ARR weaves absolute magic with the continuum in classic carnatic essence, have given me a musical experience I haven't felt in my recent memory. Simply stunning, prepare to lose yourself. Arziyan: An experience akin to Khwaja Mere Khwaja, or dare I say even better, if that is possible! Javed Ali and Kailash Kher go all out in assisting ARR create what is, in my opinion, the best Sufi-inspired song I have heard in recent years, if ever. Traditional tabla beats, clapping, and accordion dominate the entire track, coupled with ARR's magical use of strings. Once again, prepare to lose yourself in 9 minutes of pure ethereal bliss. Masakali: We have all heard the magic of the accordion in the the promos, and what a satisfying 5 minutes this turns out to be! ARR is at his playful best here, where he teases with bits of accordion and strings, along with the combination of Prasoon Joshi's masterful lyrics and Mohit Chauhan's effortless and silky singing. The humming and accordion are absolutely infectious. Dil Gira Dafatan and Hey Kaala Bandar: Two of the most unique and departure-from-tradition songs you will have heard in a long time. ARR once again pushes the boundaries of experimentation, and proves why only ARR can come up with such tunes. Dil Gira Dafatan instantly reminded me of Tu Bin Bataaye from RDB, because of the slow, soothing, and calm nature of the song. Hey Kaala Bandar is truly wacky, coupled with equally wacky yet catchy lyrics. Bhor Baaye: My initial suspicions proved right. Perhaps for the first time, this is a combination of an older recording of the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and the newly recorded, sweet-as-saccharine voice of Shreya Ghoshal into 3 minutes of pure Hindustani classical. Special note must go to Shreya's singing, which is flawless. My guess is that this will be featured as a song that one of the characters in the film sing at a gathering. Delhi 6: Featured in the new promos, This is where ARR goes into the 'Paatshala' mode, with rap and hip-hop adding to make for a very catchy number. This will surely catch up with the young crowd once the film releases. Aarti Tumre Bhavan Mein: A soothing devotional, with the voices of 4 female singers all collectively singing, most probably featuring in a temple scene in the film. Minimal usage of instruments, with emphasis resting on the collective singing. A pleasing listen. Genda Phool: Featuring the classical singing of Rekha Bharadwaj (Vishal Bharadwaj's better half), this is a playful fusion of modern-day beats and classical singing, something which Vishal Bharadwaj is extremely good at. This number is akin to Manmohini Morey, with Prasoon once again showing his mastery with words. Noor: A very short, 50-second piece featuring the deep baritone of Amitabh Bachchan, this is more of brief Shayari, which is a truly beautiful one. What an experience ARR has given at the onset of 2009 itself! This genius, this legend is simply unstoppable. Onward ARR, to people's hearts and ears with this masterpiece of a soundtrack, and to the Oscars! 10 out of 10 and 5 stars, without a doubt. Special note to Prasoon Joshi, who has come up with the most beautiful lyrics I have heard in years. Sorry to have bored you all with a rather long mini-review, but I couldn't keep my words back for this one.

Storyline reminds me of Swades in a basic way. It's a movie about discovery, learning, etc., which would allow for some soulful, thought provoking music, which is right up ARR's alley. And with Mehra known to give quite a bit of creative freedom to ARR from his RDB experience, look out for a stunning soundtrack coming up. We already know that Amitabh Bacchan heard a devotional piece Maula and just couldn't stop listening to it. Movie is urban based, NRI perspectives, which should allow for some great fusion. This soundtrack should be out next month if the movie sticks to its Feb 20 release. I don't want to raise too much expectations for myself, but I am extremely, extremely excited about the music possibilities here. The very short, intense looking teaser was a collage of scenes from old Delhi such as the Friday prayers at the Jama Masjid and cycle rickshaws in the meandering lanes of the old town interspersed with shots of the Statue of Liberty, a carefree Sonam Kapoor dancing with a pigeon perched on her head and Abhishek Bachchan in a variety of moods. And a soulful, unmistakably A.R. Rahman number in Sonu Nigam's voice playing in the background. The film is about Roshan Mehra, who travels to India with his ailing grandmother. Little does he realise that this short trip will turn into the longest journey of his life – a journey where he discovers India and himself, said Mehra. Mehra also said that like Rang De Basanti, this film too has political overtones because he believes that we cannot and should not avoid politics. Speaking about his role, Abhishek said, This film presents a foreigner's point of view of what the real India is and I could identify with that because I was away from India for many years during my schooling. Looking strikingly pretty in a black DG dress and magenta shoes, Sonam incidentally got the biggest applause when she the Delhi-6 team was introduced to the room full of media. The film's stellar cast includes Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri, Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Pawan Malhotra, Atul Kulkarni, Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Deepak Dobriyal and KK Raina. I am extremely excited about the music prospects for this film. Storyline reminds me of Swades in a basic way. It's a movie about discovery, learning, etc., which would allow for some soulful, thought provoking music, which is right up ARR's alley.
