[arr] A.R.Rahman Q&A Rolling Stone

2010-08-18 Thread Madhavan Rajan
There's a Q&A with AR in the current rolling stone magazine. In a
flight and yet to read the entire thing. From what I read, street
dancing and collaboration with Celine dion are'nt confirmed. 19th
steps is dropped! No internatiönal projects except for the non-film
project with Nicole and other artists.

My oh! You meant the digitally modulated SPB sir's voice "Pudhiya
manidhaaabhoomikku vaa"???  It is followed by ARR sir's robotic lines..!

Thanks Arvind. I really wish I wouldn't need to go to the hibernation
state again too, nevertheless, my work has a mind of its own and I'm bounded by
them. LOL!

About the robotic voice chanting "Puthiya Manitha...Boomiku Vaa", was it really
ARR? I could recognize ARR in the subsequent lines "Ehkai vaarthu, silicon
serthu" but I always thought someone else has sung the former lines. Looks
like I was wrong here.

Call it fate, but Endhiran's audio release was set at a time when I desired the
much-needed emancipation from the maddening world…and boy, what a relief it
brought to my life.
Honestly speaking, I wasn't expecting much from Endhiran soundtracks. Western,
particularly techno music has never been my favorite. Why, even when the whole
world went ga-ga over the funky Hello Doctor and Kalloori Salai (when Kadhal
Desam was released), I've been more moved by the blissful Thendrale and Anbe

Leaving the musical aspect of the album to the experts, I'm merely here to
share my experience with the album. The album starts out with Puthiya Manidha,
which also happens to be my favourite track. The prelude music, coupled the
chanting of "Puthiya Manidha" in sci-fi tune (who is this guy?) and Kathijah's
soulful voice creates a certain anticipation in yourself. Well, if you know
ARR's music, then you'll definitely know that this number is just going to get
bigger! And before you could stop thinking, the song hits you like a bang! SPB
pushes into the front lane and with the occasional support from ARR, delivers a
splendid performance. And yes, the whole song has a techno feel to it, but it's
far from being loud and noisy. There's a life in this song, a soul waiting to
embrace the world…and by the end of the song, you know that Enthiran has born
to rule the world.

Kadhal Anukkal didn't create an impact on the first listen as Puthiya Manidha
did to me. To begin with, it took me some time to realize that it's Vijay
Prakash who delivering the number. Is he the same guy who sang Hossanna? He
definitely sounds different. At times, I even felt that he was imitating Udit
Narayan's way of singing. Maybe he's not but I certainly wasn't taken by his
singing nor the song….at first. With repeated hearing, you realize what you've
missed at the first listen. Sounds you've never heard before, the cheekiness in
Vijay's voice, the joy in Shreya's and a positive vibrancy in the whole number.
The song sound fresher after numerous hearing. It's my fault for dismissing
Vijay too soon. He was amazing. Shreya was at her usual best, and leaves a

ARR switches back to techno with Irumbile oru Idhayam. The song exudes sci-fi

definite no, but surprisingly and funnily, it is. The whole idea about this
number is to project a man who feels love blossoming from his heart of steel.
ARR uses the right techno sounds to present the number.

Hi Sajin, my song preferences are as follows:-

1) Puthiya Manitha
2) Kadhal Annukkal
3) Kilimanjaro (the song is growing steadily on me. I have a feeling it will
climb up the top of the list very soon!)
4) Arima Arima
5) Irumbile Oru Idhayam
6) Boom Boom
7) Chitti Dance Showcase

The last three are not my favourite numbers actually. It's shouldn't come as a
surprise since techno and trance are tunes which I've yet to feel connected to.
Then again even Style Style and Adhiradi from Sivaji were my least favourite
numbers but I enjoyed watching them on screen. Which is why I'm confident these
songs will become a rage once the movie is released.

Subject: [arr] A.R.Rahman- the epitome of a true music virtuoso

With the heavy workload for the past 1 month, I hardly had any time to spend on
myself…no movies, no hangouts with friends, no chatting and/or interacting on
the net, and no music :( So, when the last of my assignments were sent in last
Friday, my mind was all set to embrace the activities that I've missed thus
far.

Anbe from the same film. And with the kind of film Enthiran was anticipated to
be, I was very sure that there weren't going to be any soulful melodies in the
tracks. Nevertheless, Enthiran is definitely an album which stands tall among
others, even as it continues to create a delightful impact on the listeners.
Leaving the musical aspect of the album to the experts, I'm merely here to
share
my experience with the album. The album starts out with Puthiya Manidha, which
also happens to be my favourite track. The prelude music, coupled the chanting
of "Puthiya Manidha" in sci-fi tune (who is this guy?) and Kathijah's soulful
voice creates a certain anticipation in yourself. Well, if you know ARR's
music,
then you'll definitely know that this number is just going to get bigger! And
before you could stop thinking, the song hits you like a bang! SPB pushes into
the front lane and with the occasional support from ARR, delivers a splendid
performance. And yes, the whole song has a techno feel to it, but it's far from
being loud and noisy. There's a life in this song, a soul waiting to embrace
the
world…and by the end of the song, you know that Enthiran has born to rule the
world.

Shreya was at her usual best, and leaves a
distinguished mark with the way she loops around the notes at the end of the
song. Wish she had continued singing the notes a little longer. I still don't
listen to this number as much as I enjoyed listening to Puthiya Manidha, but
yes, this is definitely a track to look out for.
ARR switches back to techno with Irumbile oru Idhayam. The song exudes sci-fi
and techno music at its best. Was I thinking that this would be soulful? A
definite no, but surprisingly and funnily, it is. The whole idea about this
number is to project a man who feels love blossoming from his heart of steel.
ARR uses the right techno sounds to present the number. The high technology,
sci-fi tune depicts the robot's inflexion, while the lyrics, regardless of how
funny or techno centric they are, illustrate his feelings towards his lover.

In fact, I would group Irumbile Oru Idhayam in the same category of Chitti
Dance
Showcase and Boom Boom Robo Da. They are definitely exciting; with amazing,
crisp, clear, sci-fi sounds nevertheless, I failed to strike a chord with any
of
them. With the right visuals though, these songs would definitely create a rage
in future, but for the time being, they stay at the bottom of my favorite track
list.
Arima Arima on the other hand belongs to a different genre. I must admit that
the number has yet to grow on me but I'm starting to have a fondness on the
grandiose that the number exudes. After a long time, Hariharan is back to ARR's
camp…and as usual, he deals the high notes with élan. Sadhana Sargam on the
other hand, is someone I prefer to hear in softer melodies. For some reasons, I
always found her voice to be

Thanks Madhavan. I enjoy writing, especially about ARR and his music. Wish I
had more time to do so. But if you think that these kind of write-ups are the
fuel to the group, then I must say that the positive vibrations I get to see
from most members of this group (especially when an ARR's album is released) is
what makes me to produce the little fuel that I'm able to.

Thanks Madhavan. I enjoy writing, especially about ARR and his music. Wish I
had more time to do so. But if you think that these kind of write-ups are the
fuel to the group, then I must say that the positive vibrations I get to see
from most members of this group (especially when an ARR's album is released) is
what makes me to produce the little fuel that I'm able to.

when the last of

activities that I've missed thus far.

audio release was set at a time when I desired the much-needed emancipation
from the maddening world…and boy, what a relief it brought to my life.

Honestly speaking, I wasn't expecting
much from Endhiran soundtracks. Western, particularly techno music has never
been my favorite. Why, even when the whole world went ga-ga over the funky Hello
Doctor and Kalloori Salai (when Kadhal Desam was released), I've been more moved

of film Enthiran was anticipated to be, I was very sure that there weren't
going to be any soulful melodies in the tracks. Nevertheless, Enthiran is
definitely an album which stands tall among others, even as it continues to
create
a delightful impact on the listeners.

Leaving the musical aspect of the
album to the experts, I'm merely here to share my experience with the album.
The album starts out with Puthiya Manidha, which also happens to be my
favourite track. The prelude music, coupled the chanting of "Puthiya Manidha"
in sci-fi tune (who is this guy?) and Kathijah's soulful voice creates a certain
anticipation in yourself. Well, if you know ARR's music, then you'll definitely
know that this number is just going to get bigger! And before you could stop
thinking, the song hits you like a bang! SPB pushes into the front lane and with
the occasional support from ARR, delivers a splendid performance. And yes, the
whole song has a techno feel to it, but it's far from being loud and noisy.
There's a life in this song, a soul waiting to embrace the world…and by the end
of the song, you know that Enthiran has born to rule the world.

Kadhal Anukkal didn't create an
impact on the first listen as Puthiya Manidha did to me. To begin with, it took
me some time to realize that it's Vijay Prakash who delivering the number. Is
he the same guy who sang Hossanna? He definitely sounds different. At times, I
even
felt that he was imitating Udit Narayan's way of singing. Maybe he's not but I
certainly wasn't taken by his singing nor the song….at first. With repeated
hearing, you realize what you've missed at the first listen. Sounds you've
never heard before, the cheekiness in Vijay's voice, the joy in Shreya's and a
positive
vibrancy in the whole number. The song sound fresher after numerous hearing.
It's
my fault for dismissing Vijay too soon. He was amazing. Shreya was at her usual
best, and leaves a distinguished mark with the way she loops around the notes
at the end of the song. Wish she had continued singing the notes a little
longer.  I still don't listen to this
number as much as I enjoyed listening to Puthiya Manidha, but yes, this is
definitely
a track to look out for.

ARR switches back to techno with Irumbile
oru Idhayam. The song exudes sci-fi and techno music at its best. Was I
thinking that this would be soulful? A definite no, but surprisingly and
funnily, it is. The whole idea about this number is to project a man who feels
love
blossoming from his heart of steel. ARR uses the right techno sounds to present
the number. The high technology, sci-fi tune depicts the robot's inflexion,
while the lyrics, regardless of how funny or techno centric they are, illustrate
his feelings towards his lover.

In fact, I would group Irumbile
Oru Idhayam in the same category of Chitti Dance Showcase and Boom Boom Robo

nevertheless, I failed to strike a chord with any of them. With the right

been more moved by the blissful Thendrale and Anbe Anbe from the same
film. And with the kind of film Enthiran was anticipated to be, I was
very sure that there weren't going to be any soulful melodies in the
tracks. Nevertheless, Enthiran is definitely an album which stands tall
among others, even as it continues to create a delightful impact on the
listeners.

Leaving the musical aspect of the album to the experts, I'm merely
here to share my experience with the album. The album starts out with
Puthiya Manidha, which also happens to be my favourite track. The
prelude music, coupled the chanting of "Puthiya Manidha" in
sci-fi tune (who is this guy?) and Kathijah's soulful voice creates
a certain anticipation in yourself. Well, if you know ARR's music,
then you'll definitely know that this number is just going to get
bigger! And before you could stop thinking, the song hits you like a
bang! SPB pushes into the front lane and with the occasional support
from ARR, delivers a splendid performance. And yes, the whole song has a
techno feel to it, but it's far from being loud and noisy.
There's a life in this song, a soul waiting to embrace the
world…and by the end of the song, you know that Enthiran has born to
rule the world.

Kadhal Anukkal didn't create an impact on the first listen as
Puthiya Manidha did to me. To begin with, it took me some time to
realize that it's Vijay Prakash who delivering the number. Is he the
same guy who sang Hossanna? He definitely sounds different. At times, I
even felt that he was imitating Udit Narayan's way of singing. Maybe
he's not but I certainly wasn't taken by his singing nor the
song….at first. With repeated hearing, you realize what you've
missed at the first listen. Sounds you've never heard before, the
cheekiness in Vijay's voice, the joy in Shreya's and a positive
vibrancy in the whole number. The song sound fresher after numerous
hearing. It's my fault for dismissing Vijay too soon. He was
amazing. Shreya was at her usual best, and leaves a distinguished mark
with the way she loops around the notes at the end of the song. Wish she
had continued singing the notes a little longer. I still don't
listen to this number as much as I enjoyed listening to Puthiya Manidha,
but yes, this is definitely a track to look out for.

ARR switches back to techno with Irumbile oru Idhayam. The song exudes
sci-fi and techno music at its best. Was I thinking that this would be
soulful? A definite no, but surprisingly and funnily, it is. The whole
idea about this number is to project a man who feels love blossoming
from his heart of steel. ARR uses the right techno sounds to present the
number. The high technology, sci-fi tune depicts the robot's
inflexion, while the lyrics, regardless of how funny or techno centric
they are, illustrate his feelings towards his lover.

In fact, I would group Irumbile Oru Idhayam in the same category of
Chitti Dance Showcase and Boom Boom Robo Da. They are definitely
exciting; with amazing, crisp, clear, sci-fi sounds nevertheless, I
failed to strike a chord with any of them. With the right visuals
though, these songs would definitely create a rage in future, but for
the time being, they stay at the bottom of my favorite track list.

Arima Arima on the other hand belongs to a different genre. I must admit
that the number has yet to grow on me but I'm starting to have a
fondness on the grandiose that the number exudes. After a long time,
Hariharan is back to ARR's camp…and as usual, he deals the high
notes with élan. Sadhana Sargam on the other hand, is someone I
prefer to hear in softer melodies. For some reasons, I always found her
voice to be a little annoying when sung in the higher notes. Then again,
the arrangement of music in this number takes the front line as compared
to the vocals. Such high-flying orchestration, such perfect crafting.
The song belongs to neither Hariharan nor Sadhna Sargam…this one
belongs to the one and only ARR!

Kilimanjaro is a surprise package in this album. It's a result of
tribal music meeting modern melody. Both Javed Ali and Chinmayi seem to
have loads of fun with this track. They sure sound different from their
other numbers, Chinmayi especially. In fact, I must confess tha

Somali singer K'Naan strikes a chord with Indians

Somali composer K'Naan's World Cup song "Wavin' Flag" has arguably become
the most downloaded international song in India and the rapper hopes his
creation captures the feeling of "unity and celebration" that the
footballing extravaganza has come to epitomise.

"My anthem is the official World Cup song for Coca Cola. It's great to have
a hit song in all four corners of the world. 'Wavin' Flag' is a beautiful,
uplifting song and I hope it captures the feeling of unity and celebration
the FIFA World Cup brings to people all across the planet," K'Naan told IANS
in an e-mail interview.

The song was released by Universal Music and the label says "Wavin' Flag"
has set a record of sorts with over 150,000 downloads in India. Football
enthusiasts are setting it as their caller tunes and it is repeatedly played
several times over on TV and radio, as also in clubs and other places.

"I am really glad that Coca Cola and Universal Music made this happen," said
the rapper, who now lives in Canada.

The track is a remix of "Wavin Flag", which originally appeared on K'Naan's
2009 album "Troubadour". The singer reworked the song for the Coca-Cola
campaign which invited football fans to express their optimism and passion
for the game through dance celebrations in the run-up to the World Cup in
South Africa.

"The single has been released in more than 150 markets around the world and
is used as the anthem for all elements of the global Coca-Cola campaign in
support of its FIFA World Cup sponsorship in more than 160 countries," said
K'Naan.

Even Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan tweeted about the song, saying: “My kids
love Wavin’ Flag.”

Mohit Chauhan said: “K’Naan's 'Wavin’ Flag' has got the right spirit and
drives home the exact message that be it life or soccer - It's a beautiful
game! Apart from the tune being immensely catchy, the beats of the track
really caught my attention. Long live Soccer!”

Deepika Padukone too praised it saying: “The best thing about this song is
that it makes me want to sing along every time I listen to it and that is
the mark of a great track. Wavin’ Flag sure is making waves all over."

*While Indians are going gaga over "Wavin’ Flag", the rapper has returned
the compliment, saying he loves Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman's
compositions.*

*"I have heard and liked Indian music, but cannot recall many names. One
person I remember is A.R. Rahman. I like his music a lot and he is very
good," he said.*

When asked whether he would like to collaborate with Rahman, the 32-year-old
said: "I am always open to explore new things."

Being originally from a strife torn area, K'Naan was asked if his songs
reflect the pain he went through. He replied: "Storytelling has been a part
of the culture I have been brought up in. I love songs that take you back
into a place you are not in. I was born in Somalia and spent my first 14
years there."

"At the age of 11 the civil war broke out. It was a very difficult and
emotional time, time for survival. All my songs are personal and have been
influenced by my life."

Today, 16 March 2010 at 1845 hrs my mentor, the 2 time Oscar and Grammy
award winner, Padmashri A.R.Rahman launched the audio of the Malayalam film
titled, Nayakan. It was a beginning that frankly I never dreamt of.
A.R.Rahman graciously accepted my request to handover the first copy of the
music cd, squeezing in time from his packed schedule. I’m ever greatful to
A.R.Rahman sir for inspiring and guiding me all through my career of music.
This launch means a lot to our entire team who has worked hard for the
album, the musicians, singers, recordists, engineers, studio facilitators,
producer and a visionary director.

The music and the background score for the film has been designed with a
very raw and rustic soundscape. Lolalamay, a soft number rendered by Preeti
Pillai is already scaling the music charts, and currently is the most
requested song on music channels. The other songs on the album, especially
the one sung by Indrajith is gaining popularity, and should work well for
him after the film releases.

An art and action film, it stars Indrajith in the lead and is directed by
Lijo Jose Pellissery. The music and original background score is scored by
Prashant Pillai. The album features 7 songs which features debutant Preeti
Pillai, the films lead Indrajith, and Renjini Jose. The audio is out on
Manorama Music. Grab a copy of the cd today.

[arr] A.R.Rahman interview in Tamil Magazine

2010-02-14 Thread Gowtham
Q1:In oscar stage you said"All my life, I had the choice of hate or love.I
choose love and i am here".It shows so frustation ! and what is the reason?
In everyone's life there was chance of selecting two ways - Hate or
Love, but nothing can be cost easily to come forward in one's life. There was
many controversy to acquire their stage in this competitive world. We are in the
position to answer to media as many of others wants us to irriate by creating
gossips. Answering them "hashly" is one way and "calmly" is another way". But i
choose the second because it suits all aspects.

Q2:Speech in the Oscar stage shows your maturity and how you obtain that even
in young age?

Right from my young age, there was many loss in my life that bring me
maturity.I started working in Studio in my young age. I learnt my life
there.Even if anyone realise cause of death it too express the maturity.I saw a
documentary film about father in church which is about 16th century. It
explains life is something expanding one's life under a small roof.Just it
proves life is temperory. I relised this in my young age. May be this seems
maturity in me

Q3:You reached the high level from down. Upto you what is the formula for this
inclination?

If you see my formula, after my caste interchange there was change in
my life. I was admired by their caste ethics. One thing i was to express that
because of my family support i am in this place. Without their coordination i
cant perform my profession. I am grateful to my family members.

Q4:You express that after your caste interchange there was a great change in
your life. But you started woking in music industry right from your young age.
After this only you change to other caste. What is the reason behind this?

As per scientist, psychologist say, everyone would found truth in
their soul life. That is magnetic attraction. Even in spiritulity, there is such
force. A person can follow either buddhism or Hinduism ,etc.. as per their
will. This my caste change made my family prosperous. This meant the reason

Q5:Whether Spirituality help you to success?

Because of my unprotection i took many false decisions. Yesterday i
received a sms that tells a situation. A daughter bring me a coffee,
unfortunately she slipped her cup and spoiled my shirt. And actually i was on
my way to work. In that situation, how would react whether making slap at her
or advice her to be caution by the next time.
We have two choices, one is forgiving another making problem. Like
this, there was many options in each and every situation. If there is a cause
of death,we have to check and stop the forthcoming . We have to think over to
decide the decision. We should be in a position to make a event whether to be
positive or negative. It depends upon us.Spirituality pay a way for this kind
of question. Even it is useful in music...

Q6:Still 18 years right from age of 23, you have been striving towards working
for music. Do you think you have lost anything, apart from college life?

I cant mean that i have lost. I too didnt realize like that. Being in
music world, gives me immense pleasure.Doing a interesting job, itself a
blessing for a person. Without complainting them , I am thankful to god for my
way.

Q7:Your friends, hobbies?

Unluckly, I dont have close friends. I dont find time to spent my day
with my friends. My co-workers are my friends. If i am in foreign countries, my
agents are my friends. I go dinner with them. But they are in business motive.
I like to spends my day with my family. Just by now i am in oscar committee so
i watch many oscar film. Before people watch a film, I will be watching with
free of cost in theatres. I have 30 films to watch. So no time for hobbies.

Q8:In oscar stage, your say " Ellam Puzhalum Iraivanukke ". Is this your actual
say or you made this to speak in tamil ?

At instant I told. Actually my sister wanted me to talk in tamil and
after my say she feel so proud about that.

Q9:What is the difference between A.R.Rahman as a keyboard player and as Oscar
winner?

I dont think, there was any difference. There is reflection in each
work. Ours thoughts would be reflected in every field. What inhibited would be
reflected. For me too, it works like that.

Q10:What would you like to say for the young music directors?

No person in the world is innocent, they use internet to know
everything. They exhibit their brilliance. India is the place where many
youngsters are present. This is good to be in future. Each growth of the plant
is known only through its seed as this is the say by "kaviko". So we have to
find whom we are.Rose sappling cant blossom Jasmine flower like that each
individual should identfy their own skills and try to establish it to the world
with hardwork. They should be in their own style without adopting other way.

[arr] A.R.Rahman is a Complete Package - Ustad Zakir Hussain

2010-02-08 Thread A.R.Rajib
‘AR RAHMAN IS A COMPLETE PACKAGE ’

Ustad Zakir Hussain gets chatty with ATon Grammy, Gulzar and the alchemy of
love ...

*VINITA CHATURVEDI Times News Network *

His nimble fingers caress, cajole the dayan and bayan just like a deft lover
teases his paramour, creating molten melodies in the aftermath, which
transcend the boundaries of the physical terrain and gently glide towards
divine ecstasy. But then, what else would you expect from Zakir Hussain, the
greatest living legend of tabla, who has enraptured music aficionados for
decades with his mindblowing renditions. The virtuoso tabla player then got
into his element speaking on Bollywood, controversies and romance...

‘Rahman’s a complete package !’

In this season of Grammy Awards, has he congratulated AR Rahman on his
double whammy and Zakir says, “Of course, I did! He has done India proud and
now the west’s waking up to the importance of outstanding Indian artistes;
and Rahman’s a complete package!"

‘Gulzar’s Grammy will arrive’

Speaking of Grammys, what’s his take on Gulzar’s missing award? The Grammy
award-winning tabla exponent says, “If Gulzar saab had gone to the US for
the award ceremony, he would’ve received it along with Rahman. Since he
didn’t, now it will be sent to his place and the process may take a couple
of months. It happened in my case too, so it’s not Rahman’s fault !”

‘Beyonce’s great entertainer, but...’

He can’t deny that Grammy Awards are now associated with controversies.
Zakir gives his take: “Grammys now have quite a few new categories that give
different artistes a chance to be nominated. Beyonce is a great entertainer,
but it’s sad that an artiste like Amjad Ali Khan didn’t get the award. Today
these award committees have to keep the commercial aspects in mind to garner
maximum television audience, and the money earned goes towards cheap housing
and medical insurance for the musicians in the US. Sadly, in India, we don’t
have such awards, for which musicians and singers will literally die to get
a nomination.”

‘Bollywood? Yes, of course !’

Interestingly, the man who has been “brought up on Bollywood capers” hasn’t
composed music for any Bollywood film till date. Ask him why this aversion
and pat comes the reply: “Koi chance hi nahin deta! Jokes apart, due to my
frequent travelling, I can’t devote much time to Hindi films, so smaller
crossover films suit me best when it comes to composing music.” And what
about appearing on 70 mm screen as an actor again? “If I’m offered a role to
play Aamir’s or SRK’s dad, I will surely do it,” gaffaws the ustad.

‘Wife makes me blush !’

With Valentine’s Day aproaching, the maestro seems to be in a mushy mood.
So, can he still make his wife Antonia blush? He pertly replies: “I hope so,
but she surely makes me blush! Diamonds, perfume and all the gifts in the
world can’t suffice for the love and caring that she’s given me.”

19.The first film by rahman is "Roja".But this is not true. His first film was
"Yodha".This film starred Mohanlal in malayalam..

Is this true? I thought Yodha was his second film...

State Dinner Will Highlight American and Indian Musicians
By RACHEL L. SWARNS

Tuesday night, at their first state dinner, President Obama and his
wife, Michelle, plan to wow India’s prime minister with a mélange of
musical entertainment, presenting musicians and singers that represent
a rich sampling of American (and Indian) genres.
On tap for this evening: the National Symphony Orchestra; Jennifer
Hudson, the singer and Academy-Award-winning actress; Kurt Elling, the
jazz musician from Chicago; and A. R. Rahman, the Indian composer who
wrote the score to the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.”
The guests – about 350 to 400 – will savor the hottest event in
Washington’s social calendar in a big tent on the White House’s south
lawn, according to people familiar with the planning. More details will
be released later in the day, including the guest list and the menu
(which will be prepared with the help of a guest chef, Marcus
Samuelsson of Aquavit in New York.)
Mr. Obama got the big day started at a ceremony in the East Room
Tuesday morning where he welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of
India to the White House before a crowd that included American
officials and members of Congress, Indian dignitaries and executives,
and students from local schools.
“As the world’s largest democracies, we can keep faith with our common
values — speaking out and standing up for the rights and dignity to
which all human beings are entitled; and showing that nations that
respect the rights and aspirations of their people are ultimately more
stable, more secure and more successful,’’ Mr. Obama said.

[arr] A.R.Rahman and Tabu inaugurate the Ability Fest 2009

2009-10-13 Thread gayathri_ck17
[Tuesday, October 13, 2009]

Music maestro AR Rahman and actress Tabu inaugurate the Ability Fest
2009 –India International Disability Film Festival in the presence
of Andrew Simkin US consul general in Chennai at Sathyam Cinemas
yesterday.

"Events like `Ability Fest 2009' would make a huge
difference in the way the public view disability. This reiterates the
fact that films can make a positive change in society," music
composer A R Rahman said on Monday.

Speaking at the inauguration of `Ability Fest 2009,' a four-day
India International Disability Film Festival in Chennai, he said it was
a welcome thing that themes such as disability, environment and human
rights are attracting the attention of the organizers.

In her address, Tabu said filmmakers should be more sensitive while
portraying disability as films were an effective tool to change the
mindset of the people.

Audio description technology, which enables audience with visual
disabilities to understand the silent parts of a movie, was launched
during the festival. The technology will be used in the closing film
`Taare Zameen Par' on October 15.

"They (visually challenged persons) would be given headphones and
the silent parts of the movies will be described in detail for
them," said festival vice-chairperson Revathy. US Consul-General,
South India, Andrew T Simkin, festival director P K Nair and festival
chairperson Jayshree Raveendran also spoke.

The four-day festival will screen over 30 movies that have gained
international recognition for their sensitive portrayal of disability.
The films will be screened from 10 am at Sathyam Cinemas till October
15.

PVR Pictures to distribute Blue

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, August 25, 2009 - 16:52 IST

Click above for more movie stillsIf the breath taking promos of Ashtavinayak
Cine Vision's produced multi starrer film Blue are anything to go by, then,
Bollywood has got all the reasons to smile about! For the uninitiated, Blue,
directed by debutante Anthony D'Souza, happens to be India's first underwater
film and is all set to hit the theatres this Diwali (Oct 16th to be precise).
It stars a plethora of actors like Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Zayed
Khan, Rahul Dev and Katrina Kaif.

On the distribution front, it's the movies major PVR Pictures, which has
decided to distribute Blue. Talking about this development, Dhilin Mehta, CMD,
Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd, said, "PVR is a one of the nation's leading
and much admired brand and we are glad to associate ourselves with them. We
have complete faith in PVR for taking care of the distribution of Blue in the
northern belt." On the other hand, Uday Singh, CEO, PVR Pictures commented,
"Blue is an exciting film to be associated with. We are happy to distribute the
film through our strong distribution network across Delhi, UP and East Punjab."

Blue, to its credit, has an amalgamation of the best of Hollywood and Bollywood
technicians. If that wasn't enough, then, fast paced racy action has been
executed by action director James Bomalick, who had set pulses running with The
Fast and The Furious - Tokyo Drift earlier. And the icing on the cake is surely
in the form of India's gift to the world A.R.Rahman, who has composed some of
the most scintillating music for this film.

With so much going for this Blue, one just hopes that this film beats others at
the B-O windows black and blue!

[arr] A.R.Rahman had come to my graduation ceremony

2009-07-09 Thread Vithur
I'm done. Got my first Degree Words cannot express the happiness and joy I
feel right now. I knew I was gonna make it finally, but there were just
things that made it rather difficult to be happy about. I mean, how could I
not graduate? Last semester, my final project and other courseworks made me
worry about graduating this year. Finally I managed to finish those better
than I planned with the help of my friends and family.[image:
Blog.activj.net Im done]

When I fail my A Level, I thought, my life is over. One portion of my life
was closed, but the door to the rest of the world was opened to me. Now I
strongly believe, there is always a way to get what we want. Sometime things
are easy, sometimes hard. As one of my flatmates always says, everything has
a reason to happen. We just need to accept it and work harder. This first
degree will definitely give me more confidence to face my future, to get a
good job and to develop myself more. Sometimes things go, not the way we
expected them to go, but in the end everything turns out well.
As I blogged earlier, the musical God, A.R.Rahman had come to my graduation
ceremony and our university honoured him with a doctorate. I finally got a
chance to see him in front of me. Actually he looked at me. I never thought
I will see him. The whole thing was unbelievable. I am really lucky.

So congratulations to myself, congratulations to my fellow graduates,
congratulations everyone else who is graduating in Middlesex University and
to everyone else who waited out side of uni and met A.R.Rahman!

2009-06-28 Thread Gobi Kanadasan
I don't think so. This is because Gautham has already shot the songs in Malta
and Kerala. If ARR opts out at this stage, maybe he won't be doing the BGM. But
I wonder why the movie's name is missing from the discography list in the
www.arrahman.com. I hope ARR does not opts out. To ARR sir, please don't leave
this project. Maybe you could adjust sometime to go ahead with this movie

(06-09) 19:42 PDT HONG KONG, China (AP) --

The Indian film industry is taking its annual road show to China's coastal
casino enclave of Macau, hoping to broaden the appeal of its elaborate
song-and-dance productions in the booming Chinese market and the rest of
eastern Asia.

Bollywood's first family led by veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, his son
Abhishek, and daughter-in-law, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, will walk
the red carpet as the International Indian Film Academy hosts its 10th
annual weekend conference from Thursday to Saturday.

The world's most prolific film industry is hoping to translate its large
output into bigger revenue by widening its viewership beyond native Indians.

Overseas income is already contributing more to the $2.3 billion Indian
movie industry, with foreign box office revenues jumping from 5.3 percent of
total revenue in 2005 to 9.8 percent in 2008, according to a report
commissioned by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
With their large ethnic Indian populations, the U.S. and Britain are now
Bollywood's two biggest foreign markets.

Those figures, however, pale in comparison to Hollywood's global influence.
The American industry earned $9.8 billion at the domestic box office in 2008
and another $28.1 billion abroad, according to the Motion Picture
Association of America.

But encouraged by the global success of the Oscar-winning rags-to-riches
story "Slumdog Millionaire" — a British film about an orphan from the slums
of Mumbai who becomes the champion of the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be
a Millionaire" — Indian filmmakers are looking to expand their reach beyond
their own ethnic communities.

"The success and popularity of 'Slumdog Millionaire,' with its Indian
locales, artists and music, underscores the growing influence of Indian
cinema and augurs well for Bollywood movie markets targeting global
audiences," the FICCI report said.

Amitabh Bachchan told a recent media briefing promoting the International
Indian Film Academy weekend that the Indian film industry needs to do a
better job of selling itself. Indian films typically devote 10 percent to 15
percent of their budget to marketing, compared to 30 percent in Hollywood,
according to the FICCI report.

"Hollywood has greater marketing skills. We don't know how to market our
product because we don't have the funds," the 66-year-old actor said, adding
that, "we are trying."

The film academy has held previous overseas events in London, Dubai,
Johannesburg, Amsterdam and Bangkok.

In addition to showcasing several new Indian films, this year's event in
Macau will include a conference of business executives from India and China
on Friday that will focus on collaboration between the two countries, with
Indian Ambassador to China Nirupama Rao making the pitch for her home
country.

Famed Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman, an Oscar winner for his "Slumdog
Millionaire" score, will hold a workshop on Friday. Heartthrob Hrithik
Roshan and wife Suzanne will model for Indian designers at a fashion show
Thursday nig

2009-05-17 Thread Ramesh R
Some comments since this isn't the final cover-

Fix the lousy Photoshop work for the image on the right (front-flap). The photo
outline does not blend well with the gray background and you can see the
originally white portions of the background at the top of ARR's head.

I do not understand the obsession with ALL CAPITALS. Why oh why should
everything associated with A R Rahman have to be in capital letters? I don't
mean the title but the author's bio and the blurb beneath the Oscar photo.

And while you folks are at it can you also fix the massive ode to capital
letters in ARR's website as well? If there ever was a god of Capital Letters
he'd grant ARR a permanent place in heaven thanks to the excessive devotion
shown in www.arrahman.com . Sorry, Gops! But it's been more than a year since I
first cribbed about ALL CAPS in the website. Consider this yet another reminder.

On a lesser note...
Front flap: Why is 'discovery' enclosed in quotes?
