[arr] Rahman composes song in 40 hours

2010-09-08 Thread SADIQ
AR Rahman might have taken six months to compose the theme song for the
Commonwealth Games but he delivered a new composition for Madhu Mantena's,
Jhootha Hi Sahi in a day-and-a-half. The maestro saw the film at his studio in
Chennai last Friday and told director Abbas Tyrewalla that a title track would
enhance the overall impact of the movie.
Tyrewala was initially apprehensive as the John Abraham-starrer is scheduled to
open on October 15. But Rahman assured him that he'd deliver the song in a
couple of days.

Mantena confirms the news: "We had recorded eight songs but no title track.
Rahman insisted we had to have one and reasoned that it could play in the
background just before the climax, so we didn't need to picturise it. To save
time, Abbas suggested he give us only one `antara' (stanza) but Rahman came up
with a complete song."
OUR BOSS ROCKS

[arr] RAHMAN RULZ DOODZ!

2010-09-08 Thread Triply
BREAKING NEWS!!

A new deadly virus seems to have afflicted the Indian populace. The virus,
dubbed "Rahman Rulz Doodz", seem to affect certain Rahman fans. The
affliction seems to cause panic attacks, high blood pressure, ulcers, short
temper and, in extreme cases, depression.

Symptoms: Are you afflicted by Rahman Rulz Doodz? Here is a quick
questionnaire that helps you decide:

1. Do you get worked up when a new Rahman album is launched, but does not
release on the same day?
2. Do you find journalists yellow because they have something negative to
say about Rahman?
3. Is Ram Gopal Verma a useless guy because he thinks Rahman ruined film
music?
4. Is Anu Malik a swell dude because he supported Rahman's CWG theme?
5. Is the CWG is one big mess where no one there can be any good because
they were disappointed with Rahman's theme?
6. Is every new channel a house of lies because they run Rahman's CWG to the
ground?
7. Is IBNLive a wretched spawn of satan because they have derogatory things
to say about Rahman?
8. Do you feel that Rahman is giving his absolute best with masterpieces
like Komaram Puli, Endhiran and the CWG theme?
9. Is every one's opinion invalid, if they differ from yours, particularly
with reference to Rahman?
10. Do you think Rahman is a god?

If you answered yes to:-
A) less than 3 questions - you are relatively sane.
B) more than 2 questions but less than 5 questions - you are about to be
afflicted. Take care. Breathe deeply and calm yourself. You may be an
anorak.
C) more than 4 questions but less than 10 - Dude, you are totally afflicted.
Take a chill pill. Relax. Rahman Rulz Doode, but You Drools and that's
Roode.
D) all 10 questions - get a life. Seriously.

How to avoid the affliction:

1. Don't take everything you read about Rahman to heart. Sometimes, people
like saying nasty things, even if it is unwarranted.
2. Understand that not everything Rahman makes is a masterpiece. Not
everything Rahman composes will be liked by everyone. People can have strong
reactions to things they don't like, just like you can.
3. Understand that Rahman is not a god. He is only human. He can make
mistakes too.
4. Rahman is the best Indian music composer. It is a fact for everyone to
see. You needn't worry about someone not knowing that fact and make it your
personal quest to enlighten the poor deluded fool.

What to do you do to cure yourself of the affliction?

The cure is the other side of the affliction. Rahman has made some of the
greatest music on earth. Listen to it. Disregard external factors. Just
enjoy your private world, drowning in his music. Discuss the positive
aspects of his compositions. Don't get into a whole "my gun is bigger than
yours" argument with someone who strongly resents some composition. Just
agree to disagree and move on.

This group is one of my favourite hangouts and I have been here for quite
sometime. I love reading the different view points and discussions and I
love gauging the excitement when a new album is about to release. What I
don't like is the venom that is posted here. Whether it is against another
member, or some news channel, a web site, a composer, or anyone else.

Gopal created this for a community of Rahmaniacs. Let's not lose the "Rah"
and become plain maniacs.

Apologies if I offended anyone.

[arr] Rahman may not have faced huge criticism before

2010-09-02 Thread Aditya Pai
I am write something which may not be liked by all and I also don't whether
Mr.Gopal will clear my message, Over past few months that is after Rahman won
an Oscar for SDM he has been facing criticism on everything he has composed
for why is it like that? His fans might have increased so as the criticism,
so the fans who really criticize are they really Rahman fan or they have become
fans just because he has won an Oscar.
Rahman is doing non stop work past 2-3 years earlier we used to get one album
where he used to take his own time and we the fans were very happy with that
but now the things have changed a lot, Rahman scheduled has become jam packed
he is composing music in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and now for Hollywood as well and
over that numerous stage shows, world tours, CWG tunes, Champions League tunes
its humanly impossible for anyone to manage all these things.
Criticizers like to criticize because they are jealous of him and I am sure
some fans 'here' or in 'orkut community' are not his fans , they are there just
to give negative comments.
I still remember the days golden era of A.R.Rahman from 1993 to 2008 where he
used to give music with no pressure behind him as a Oscar winner.
But soon after winning an Oscar huge criticism followed:
1. Mixed Reactions for Blue2. Mixed Reactions for VTV3. Mixed Reactions for
Raavan4. Mixed Reactions for Endhiran especially the hindi songs
So has the Oscar Winner tag really benefited him is the real question
I being his fan is really worried for him This was my personal opinion no
offence.

2010-09-02 Thread Gayathri
I tend to disagree with this point. Lack of appreciation is not a reason to
leave one's field. What happens if Hollywood failed to appreciate his work
tomorrow? Do you want him to leave Hollywood as well?

Personally, I don't want ARR to leave Bollywood or Kollywood (or whatever other
woods we have in the film industry). Working against the tide has always been
his style I believe, and he will succeed in this again, regardless of
government projects or not.

We can't be expecting every songs of ARR to be appreciated and his past
accomplishments to be remembered. Then again, this is also not the first time
ARR has been criticized by the media and public alike. There's just so much of
negativity going on right now that people are failing to see the beauty in the
CWG theme. I'm pretty sure that it's only a matter of time before people will
start praising the same.

2010-09-01 Thread Chris Raj
My thoughts on the controversies..

1. ARR should stop working on Govt projects which involves political influences
and avoid working with people who doesnt have musical taste and knowledge as
CWG board.

2. concentrate only on west and hollywood movies and gain more oscars and beome
more popular ICON on hollywood...

3. No Indian assignments for another few years and surely people would come
beyond ARR for great music

Yes, they do. If he gives another "hit" (does not mean that this is a flop) or

[arr] Rahman magic on the wane, say music lovers

2010-08-30 Thread SaiRam K
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/hyderabad/rahman-magic-wane-say-music-lovers-415

Hyderabad/Chennai, Aug. 28: The theme song for the Commonwealth Games Jiyo
Utho Badho Jeeto, composed by A.R. Rahman received mixed reviews from music
lovers.

“I usually like Rahman’s songs. I heard him sing the song and it was like
any other song. I guess he is slowly losing his flavour. Shakira has her own
sex appeal and Waka Waka was catchy. Of late, people are liking whatever he
does for the brand he is rather than the music he composes,” said Raghu, an
upcoming playback singer.

“I had lots of expectations from his CWG composition. I just heard a bit of
it and it is just average. I felt I heard similar songs before. I don’t know
if he is overworked or saturated but Rahman’s touch is waning,” said a
senior music composer on condition of anonymity.

Music director Radhakrishna, who had not liked a couple of the songs
composed by Rahman in his last Telugu film Em Maya Chesave, said, “He is
singing this song and surely knows he will get a lot of publicity out of
this event. The song will be downloaded and played by the media several
times. Even if it is not that great, people will start liking it as
television and radio stations will play it again and again. Rahman’s show in
the city was a flop when he came here. It’s not that everything he composes
is great.”

Singer Anuj Gurwara, who heard the song online, said that it would be some
time before people liked the song. “It is a typical Rahman number and will
take time to grow on you. Initially people might think it is just an average
composition but I will still wait for a few more weeks to see the public
reaction,” he said.

Avid music buffs too felt that it was Rahman’s image that made people like
whatever he composed rather than the music.

“His songs of late are not what they were and the CWG one is no exception. I
felt his song for CWG was so similar to what he did before. Comparing
himself to Shakira is a joke. She is a stage performer with energy and sex
appeal. I guess his stardom is getting on his head now,” said Mr Srikanth N.
an engineering student learning classical music.

However, Kollywood, Rahman’s home industry, backed him up saying the music
is very typical of Rahman.

Ramya, popular DJ and TV anchor, said, “Most ARR compositions would be a bit
unusual and difficult to understand in the beginning; only by repeated
listening will we start liking them. That’s what happened even with his
latest Enthiran music. Nobody liked the music on the first day of the CD
release but now people are going gaga over it.”

But, software professional Vikram Mohan, 28, however, said that the score
did not strike a chord with him.

“The tune was not catchy and seems eminently forgettable. Compared to

Why the urge to give a song a review as soon as it is released? Take time and
let it grow on you. This people just wanna be the first to post their reviews.

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman launched Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto,
the theme song for the Commonwealth Games, in Gurgaon on Saturday.
The song, however, has received mixed reviews from music lovers. While a
lot of young singers felt it was average, music composers opined that
though it didn’t impress immediately, it might grow on listeners.
Interestingly, a lot of youngsters were surprised about Rahman’s
statement that his song could not be compared with Shakira’s Waka Waka,
used for the Fifa world cup.
On Saturday, Rahman sang the song for around five minutes in front of a
gathering that included Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, Haryana CM Bhupinder
Singh Hooda and CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi.
“I feel honoured to have got the opportunity to compose the theme song
for the mega-event. It was not an easy task. I had started composing it
six months ago and finished just last night,” Rahman said.

“I usually like Rahman’s songs. I heard him sing the song and it was
like any other song. I guess he is slowly losing his flavour. Shakira
has her own sex appeal and Waka Waka was catchy. Of late, people are
liking whatever he does for the brand he is rather than the music he
composes,” said Raghu, an upcoming playback singer.

“I had lots of expectations from his CWG composition. I just heard a bit
of it and it is just average. I felt I had heard similar songs before. I
 don’t know if he is

overworked or saturated, but Rahman’s touch is waning,” said a senior music
composer on condition of anonymity.

Music director Radhakrishna, who had not liked a couple of the songs
composed by Rahman in his last Telugu film Em Maya Chesave, said, “He is
singing this song and surely knows he will get a lot of publicity out
of this event. The song will be downloaded and played by the media
several times. Even if it is not that great, people will start liking it
as TV and radio stations will play it again and again. Rahman’s show in
the city was a flop when he came here. It’s not that everything he
composes is great.”

Singer Anuj Gurwara, who heard the song online, said it would be some
time before people took to the song. “It is a typical Rahman number and
will take time to grow on you. Initially people might think it is just
an average composition but I will still wait for a few more weeks to see
 the public reaction,” he said.

Avid music buffs too felt that it was Rahman’s image that made people
like whatever he composed rather than the music. “His songs of late are
not what they were and the CWG one is no exception. I felt his song for
CWG was so similar to what he did before. Comparing himself to Shakira
is a joke. She is a stage performer with energy and sex appeal. I guess
his stardom is getting on his head now,” said Mr Srikanth N, an
engineering student learning classical music.

However, Kollywood, Rahman’s home industry, backed him up saying the music is
very typical of Rahman.

However, Kollywood, Rahman’s home industry, backed him up saying the music is
very typical of the singer’s compositions.

“Ramya, popular DJ and TV anchor, said, “Most ARR compositions would be a
bit unusual and difficult to understand in the beginning; only by
repeated listening will we start liking them. That’s what happened even
with his latest Enthiran music. Nobody liked the music on the first day
of the CD release but now people are going gaga over it.”

But, software professional Vikram Mohan, 28, however, said that the
score did not strike a chord with him. “The tune was not catchy and
seems eminently forgettable. Compared to Shakira’s Waka Waka and other
sports anthems, Rahman’s composition falls flat,” he said.

one of his movies.

But Yuvraaaj, made me think enuf is enuf :P

Re: [arr] Rahman vs lucky actresses !!!

2010-08-23 Thread Rivjot
Vinod, I can just tell that you are Telugu :P

(IMO) This list contain 'original' movie names. E.g. Kandukondain Kandukondain
instead of Priyuralu Pilichindi, Kadhalan instead of Premikudu etc

.. or one can mention all the movies Hindi / Tamil / Telugu for the same title,
but it should definitely not just be the list of Telugu movies.

PS: Madhubala was in Iruvar, Yodha, Mr Romeo as well. Nagma also in Love Birds.

With regards to leading actors (time when AR started his film career), I

The title makes misconception.

Actually he is just replying to a question, particularly point out to the song
'Waka Waka'.
But the title sounds like, he came with a new product and announce it will be
better than 'Waka Waka'.

Subject: [arr] Rahman promises to go beyond ‘Waka Waka’ with CWG theme song

It will be another 10 days before the Commonwealth Games theme song is
officially launched but Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman on Monday promised
it
would be worth the wait as his ‘Yaaro India bula liya’ would be unlike anything
that has happened before.
Rahman said the song would go beyond Shakira’s chart-buster for this year’s
soccer World Cup ‘Waka Waka’
Rahman said the launch of the song will have to wait some more because he is
still giving some final touches.
“I have been working on the song for the past six months.
It is in my voice with a chorus and I promise that it will be a big part of the
celebration and will be unlike anything that has happened before in India,” the
celebrated musician told reporters.
Rahman, however, refused to give details about the song beyond the opening line
‘Yaaro India bula liya’, saying it would be better if it is launched properly.
“I can’t reveal much because I have to tweak the lyrics a bit and add some
sound
elements. But the song is about India, about energy, winning and not giving up.
We want the crowd to sing along with us at the opening ceremony. It is simple
but not simplistic,” he said.
When asked whether the song will manage to overshadow Shakira’s popular
football
World Cup anthem ‘Waka Waka’, Rahman said it is “exactly no” Waka Waka’
“It is not ‘Waka Waka’ We wanted to go beyond it. It is complex, difficult to
explain but I am sure you will like it when you hear it,” he added.
Rahman has also planned an orchestra and a dedication to the country’s cultural
heritage and Mahatma Gandhi.
“I have cancelled all my prior engagements to prepare this theme so you can
understand how serious I am about this,” he added.
Rahman said that he was initially apprehensive whether the GoM will like the
song but they liked the song.
“I was a little bit apprehensive if they will like it because the Group of
Minister consist of aged people but they all liked and approved it,” he said.
Organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi said the theme will make every
Indian proud.
“The GOM gave us their consent in the 26th meeting yesterday and I am sure
Rahman’s song will make every Indian happy and it will spread awareness,” he
said.
The opening ceremony will have Rahman performing live.
Filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who heads the CWG cultural committee, was also present
along with noted dancer Shovana Narayan, creative head of the committee Bharat
Bala and director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, Viraf Sarkari.

Rahman said the launch of the song will have to wait some more because
he is still giving some final touches.

"I have been working on the song for the past six months. It is in my

"It is not 'Waka Waka'. We wanted to go beyond it. It is complex,

Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman will make a presentation of his
theme song for the Commonwealth Games at a meeting of a Group of Ministers
on Sunday. Sources said the idea was to ensure that the song becomes a
sensation like his own *Jai Ho *and Soccer World Cup theme song *Waka
  Waka*.

Rahman will make the presentation of the song before the GoM, which has now
been empowered to take all necessary decisions for the smooth conduct of the
event.

It will be the first meeting of the Group of Ministers after alleged
corruption scandals hit the Games and comes a day after Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh's emergency review meeting on preparations for the mega
sporting event.

recently ARR took the chance and worked with kalaipuli dhanu's son in
sakkarakkati. needless to say the movie was a disaster and the songs were
wasted in the movie. on the other hand his new buddy gautham churned out a
class movie like VTV and the songs were extraordinary. so, really ARR needs
to work with matured directors in my opinion and not with directors who are
in an experimental mode. i really dont want to see ARRs songs wasted in a
movie or be unheard just because of a wrong combo that has failed to click
in the box office.

Hi,

I think Rahman should start working with new breed of directors who are giving
us some good movies. I am very much eager to see Rahman working with
Vasanthabalan of 'Veyil' and 'Angadi Theru' fame. They might bring some
mind-blowing numbers together. Same might have happened if he has worked in
'Madrasapattinam'. I think working with new directors with fresh thoughts will
even help Rahman to give some new dimensions to his music.

What say guys?

The Music Launch ofEndhiran, a movie touted to be one of the most ambitious
Indian films yet, took place at Kuala Lumpar. The venue was jam-packed, and
understandingly so! The presence of Super Star Rajinikanth, double-Oscar winner
A.R. Rahman, Former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and popular filmmaker
Shankar, under one roof, is a once in a life-time occurrence.
The Endhiran music CD was released by the movie's producer Kalanidhi Maran,
M.D. of Sun Pictures. Everyone was given an opportunity to share with the eager
and enthused audience their experience making the film. But the speech that was
most longed for came last!
When Rajinikanth ascended the stage, the auditorium exploded in applause and
one could almost touch the anticipation and excitement that spread through the
hall. “When I was going to sign on Sivaji, I asked Kamal (Haasan) what kind of
a maker Shankar was. He told me, he is a very intelligent man, but a very
demanding man as well. And now, before Sun Pictures came on board, I told Mr.
Kalanidhi Maran that Shankar is a like a wild, race horse – he wild surely get
to the destination, but we must hang-on tight, to keep up with him,” Rajni said
of Shankar. Adding that the director was a true visionary and would won
day direct a fabulous Hollywood movie.
Talking about A.R. Rahman, he said, “Spiritual books tell us that there are
three important aspects that differentiate a normal man and a yogi. A true yogi
has no ego. He is someone who follows the path of love. And above all he
surrenders himself unto God, by putting Him before all else – success, power,
money. Considering these things, ARR is a yogi. He has all these three
qualities that spiritual gurus say make a yogi. He's the best proof that you
don't have to go to the Himalayas to find yogis!”
Rajni went on to say that Aishwarya Rai is no ordinary girl. She combines
beauty and brains. “She is the most beautiful Miss World of our times. Even in
a scene in the movie where she wore hardly any make-up, she looked stunning!
She's the kind of woman, who is charming in every way,” he added.Coming to the
unconditional affection his fans have for him, Rajni was humble in saying they
treat him like a baby. “Parents dress up their child in fancy clothes, and
rejoice when they see that child sing and dance. Similarly, you all dress me up
in different get-ups, make me look younger, ask me to dance and sing, and
praise and applaud me when I do that. It's all your doing. I do nothing,” he
quipped. Wrapping up him speech, like the true philosopher and spiritualist he
is, the star insisted the happiness and success are not permanent. “Sometimes
you will have to come down before you achieve something that will take you to
the top. If you succeed once
and think, that you're successful, you will be in for a rude shock. Ups and
downs in life, are inevitable. Learn to accept both and move,” he said and

Rahman ‘roars’ in TeluguIndiaGlitz [Thursday, July 29, 2010]

Not just music, but Rahman too has no language. For he is not just a
pan-Indian music composer, but a global player and a proud winner of coveted
international honours like the Oscar and the Grammy.

And now, the ‘Mozart of Madras’ has showed is penchant for Telugu. One of
his latest tweets on his microblogging page reads, “Nenu A R Rahman
Matladutunnanu”, which means ‘This is Rahman speaking”.

This tweet from the music maestro comes in the wake of the audio launch of
his Tollywood venture ‘Puli’, which has Pawan Kalyan in the lead role. The
film is directed by Kollywood’s actor-director S J Suryah.

Rahman has sung a number ‘Maaralante…’ in ‘Puli’, which is getting ready to
hit the screens soon. “It is my favourite song in the album,” the music
composer says and adds: “It’s about Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy that if you
do good to one person, you are doing good to the whole world.”

[arr] Rahman plays party pooper

2010-07-27 Thread satish_srini
The cast and crew of Abbas Tyrewala's next were planning to combine the wrap-up
bash with a housewarming party at John Abraham's new pad in Bandra.

However, A R Rahman played spoilsport by calling producer Madhu Mantena and
director Tyrewala to attend his concert in Wembley on Sunday night. And with
John travelling to Malaysia to shoot a commercial, his first house party has
been put off for the time being.

Confirming this Madhu says, "You can't say no to Rahman when he calls. By
calling us to London he managed to squeeze in some recordings for our film and
even put up a rocking show. Watching him live is always a different experience.
The wrap-up party went for a toss, but Abbas and I are having a great time in
London."

On his return from London in a few days, Madhu plans to rework the dates to
organise another party. "Of course we will celebrate. Once we come back and
speak to John there will be another party which, hopefully, won't be
cancelled."

Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman says that contrary to reports, he will not be
collaborating with U&B star Usher and pop singer Dido for his next album, but
for a different project.

“I will be collaborating with Usher and Dido but it is not for my next album,
as everyone is saying. It is for some other project, the details of which I
can’t reveal yet,” Rahman said from London. “I’m concentrating on my world tour
right now, and my work on the collaboration will start after it is over,” added
the composer, who is rehearsing for his European performances in London.

Rahman, who shone on the global arena with his work in Slumdog Millionaire that
fetched him double Oscars, says he has put his Hollywood ventures on hold for
the time being.

“I did get offers from a number of directors in Hollywood, but right now, I’m
not taking anything because I don’t have the time due to my world tour. So, I
have postponed that for some time.”

Asked what makes him a global celebrity, Rahman said, “Well it’s tough for me
to tell you what it is. I think it’s just about the timing. First, Slumdog
Millionaire happened, then all the awards followed and then, one thing led to
another.” The composer has the Pawan Kalyan-starrer Telugu film Puli and
director Shankar’s forthcoming Endhiran in the pipeline.

It’s not just Rahman who has a musical mind in his family; son Ameen is also
showing signs of his father’s talent. The six-year-old sang a song in the
Hollywood film, Couples Retreat. So will Rahman encourage his son to get into
the industry? “Right now, we can’t say anything. He is too young. It all
depends on the situation when he grows up,” said the ace composer.

The box office-busting, Academy Award-winning success of "Slumdog

director, the cast and virtually all of Hollywood.

And especially Alla Rakah "A.R." Rahman.

Already a respected composer within India's burgeoning film community,
"Slumdog Millionaire" and its end-title hit, "Jai Ho," made Rahman an
international superstar and opened Western ears to his music. The soundtrack
topped Billboard's Top Electronic Albums Chart in January 2009 and peaked at
No. 4 on the Billboard 200. It won a Golden Globe for Best Original Score,
two Oscars — Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song for "Jai Ho" —
and a pair of Grammy Awards.

Rahman, who's actually sold more than 350 million copies of his soundtrack
albums worldwide, also was saluted as the "Mozart of Madras" on Time
magazine's 2009 list of the World's Most Influential People and was tapped
by Hollywood to score the romantic comedy, "Couples Retreat." And the new
notoriety has allowed him to bring "The A.R. Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The
Journey Home World Tour" to North America — and to the Pontiac Silverdome
this weekend.

"It's been like a roller coaster ride," said Rahman, 44. "It's stuff you'd
never imagine — two Grammys, two Oscars, a Golden Globe, things you never
thought were achievable, being from India.

"I was surprised, yeah, of course. With ('Slumdog') I just wanted to do
something different from what I normally do in India. I never knew it would
be such a success."

"Slumdog" was indeed a fresh approach to film music for the father of three.
At the behest of director Danny Boyle, it used "very limited music," Rahman
noted. "An Indian film has almost two hours of music, constant scoring
underneath," he explained. "So I felt like I was underworked on the movie,
but the impact of where the music came was huge."

And "Jai Ho" — which became a hit single via a remix that added the Pussycat
Dolls — was "like an afterthought. Danny had picturized (the end sequence)
to some other songs, and I saw the choreography and said, 'Why don't we do a
song to this beat and add the word "Jai Ho," because in the movie the person
(Jamal Malik, played by Dev Patel) goes through so much turmoil, and when he
comes out it's like a victory, and I wanted to enhance that."

Movie scoring was not Rahman's first career choice — although music was.
Born A.S. Dileep Kumar in the city of Chennai, the capital of the Indian
state of Tamil Nadu, Rahman was introduced to music by his father, R.K.
Shekhar, a composer and conductor who also did film music. Rahman was young
when his father passed away, and he became more interested in playing
keyboards for bands such as Roots and Nemesis Avenue while also studying
Western classical music at Trinity College of Music in London.

Rahman opened his own recording studio in 1992 and began writing ad jingles,
but was then approached by film director Mani Ratnam to score his film
"Roja," which earned Rahman the first of four Best Music Director honors at
India's National Film Awards and, he explained, "opened me to films in a
very different way which I'd never imagined before."

"I got hooked on it," said Rahman, who also performed with Michael Jackson
in Munich during 2002, collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the play
"Bombay Dreams" in England and composed music for the short-lived stage
version of "The Lord of the Rings."

"Film music ... is like a blank canvas and you can paint anything on it and
add that to the film. Some directors force you to do a certain kind of
music, others allow you the freedom to do anything, but the idea is to
create an excitement for people to come to the theaters and at the same time
retain musical integrity and artistic quality."

With "The Journey Home World Tour," meanwhile, Rahman is hoping to not only
build greater understanding of and appreciation for film music but also
achieve a cross-cultural exchange. Working with creative director Amy
Tinkham, who's worked on shows for Madonna, Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney and
Britney Spears, Rahman has fashioned a 2-1/2-hour night of music that
features a cast of musicians, dancers and acrobats, plus changing stage sets
and an extensive video production.

"We're looking at a universal appeal to this," explained Rahman, who will
play keyboards, sing and explain songs to the audience during the show.

Rahman to enthrall US with musical spectacle

*IANS/Washington*

Music maestro A R Rahman is all set to enthrall audiences in the US capital
on Sunday as part of a world tour that takes him across the United
States,Canada, France,Switzerland, Holland andBritain.

The 45-day world tour titled ‘AR Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home
World Tour’ started with a show yesterday at the Nassau Coliseum in New
York. It then goes to New Jersey, Washington, Chicago, Detroit, San
Francisco, Los Angeles, Raleigh and Atlanta on the US leg.

The Bollywood legend who exploded onto the world stage with his Academy
award-winning music for Slumdog Millionaire gave a glimpse of the theatrical
experience that awaits the denizens of Washington at a preview here ahead of
the tour.

Recreating his studio arrangements live, Rahman will be flanked by costumed
dancers, acrobats from Cirque de Soleil and a Mongolian contortionist.
State-of-the-art 3-D light-mapping technology will conjure virtual movie
sets, offering a spectacle inspired by the music’s cinematic sources.

The shows at the Patriot Centre in Fairfax on Sunday and elsewhere promise
to mesmerise audiences with a true fusion of Hollywood and Bollywood.

“Normally, I get a very mixed South Asian audience -Tamil, Telugu, Hindi,
Punjabi and Gujarati people from India; Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and
Bangladeshis,” said Rahman.

“Because of the success of Slumdog Millionaire, we’re hoping at least a
percentage of the audience will be new,” said the man who is called “Mozart
of Madras” who has performed several times in the US since 2000.

Rahman, who would like Americans to know more about the diversity of Indian
cinema, said he had a new global listener in mind when he assembled the
material. “We tried to pick out songs that would be universally appealing,
to mix together elements in ways that have never been done before. It’s very
exciting.”

“It will be a blend of the East and West, from Bharatnatyam to pop and tap
dance,” said Amy Tinkham creative director of the concert.

The concert will span throughout Rahman’s career, right from its inception
with Roja to the latest hit Slumdog Millionaire which brought him the Oscar.
Besides these, there will be songs from Laagan, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Dil
Se, Rang De Basanti and his other creations.

“In the 150-minute musical spectacle, the very soul of India can be
experienced. From the myths of rural India to the colours of the
festivities, the rhythm and beats of the urban culture, this musical concert
will have it all,” said producer Deepak Gattani of Rapport Productions.

[image: A R Rahman]It may sound like an outlandish amount for a concert
ticket, but for fans of AR Rahman in the US, $1,050 (approximately Rs
50,000) is a small price to pay to watch the maestro in action.

During Rahman’s world tour concerts in the US, tickets for a special
enclosure called the *Jai Ho *Circle, cost $1,050.

The tickets promise a hassle-free, green-carpet entry with non-alcoholic
drinks and choiciest snacks served at the concert. Though the cheapest
ticket for the show costs $54.40, Hindu activist in the US, Rajan Zed, has
urged Rahman to further lower the price to $20 so that all his fans can
enjoy it ‘in these times of recession’.

But, according to the organisers, the show is already a sell out. “I doubt
if any seat will be left available at any of the concerts; all the tickets
are sold out in the US,” said Aroon Shivdasani of Indo-American Arts
Council, which is selling the tickets.

Called *Jai Ho *- The Journey Home, the concert kicks off in New York on
June 11. The last concert of the series is at London’s Wembley Stadium on
July 5.

Delhi-based designer Ritu Beri has designed 300 outfits for the tour. “I’ve
tried to merge the heritage and traditions of India, adding modernity to the
presentation,” said the designer. The costumes, inspired by yoga and
classical dances, will have LED display for a disco-like effect. The stage
show will include four troupes of dancers and Cirque du Soleil acrobats and
other special performances.

*Look who met with Rahman *
During Rahman’s practice session in Los Angeles, Michael Jackson’s brother
Jermaine Jackson, and MJ’s son Prince, reportedly paid him a surprise visit.
Prince told Rahman that he is a big fan of his song, *Jai Ho*. Rahman
reportedly has extended a personal invitation to the Jasksons to his
concert.

Bollywood tracks have found particular favour with
listeners in Britain, where over one in four tracks downloaded is a Bollywood
song. Following suit in the downloading department are Singaporeans at the
second spot, who are responsible for nearly a third (31 per cent) of all Indian
music downloads outside India. While Finland and Germany occupy the third and
fourth slots respectively, Australian music fans account for a fifth of the
global total.

The UAE, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico and Russia
round off the top 10 respectively. In India, Bollywood songs represent over half
of all downloaded tracks (54 per cent), with western pop and ghazal next in
line. Among Indian artistes, Oscar-award winning music composer AR Rahman leads
the way as the world’s most downloaded Indian artiste. He is followed in
popularity by playback singer Sonu Nigam, JoJo, Himesh Reshammiya and Shaan.

Udit Narayan, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Salim-Sulaiman occupy

When you are an Oscar winner and on a world tour, you need a fashion
designer. Even the sartorially sombre AR Rahman. So Ritu Beri is designing
the wardrobe for Rahman and his troupe for “AR Rahman Jai Ho: The Journey
Home World Tour 2010”, which commences on June 11 in New York.

Beri, who has barely a month to get the costumes ready, has to design 34
different looks for Rahman and the group of musicians and dancers who will
be travelling with him. Befitting the grandeur of the sets and the occasion,
she has designed unusual LED costumes for the team.

“It’s been my most thrilling experience to date,” says Beri. “When I
started working on the looks, I realised that Rahman was not the one for
flashy colours,” she says. But Beri is determined to make Rahman sport looks
that he hadn’t so far. “This time Rahman has experimented. He has been more
fun and adventurous,” says Beri who got him in ethnicwear for the song
Khwaja mere Khwaja from the film Jodhaa Akbar. For another number, Rahman
dresses like Michael Jackson, and this surely has been his boldest look,
says Beri. She isn’t sure about touring with the troupe, but she will be
definitely going to cheer them in Paris on June 17.

[arr] "Rahman and Mani have always weaved magic" - Nikhil Dwivedi

2010-05-22 Thread Liku
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/features/2010/05/22/6274/

Music is what feelings sound like for Nikhil Dwivedi. When he talks
about Raavan
and its music, you can make out his
feelings for the film and its soundtracks. He doesn't take sides; he
stands by it and firmly. He is a true music lover and a strange one too.
Because his all time favourite song is from the film Satte Pe Satta
called 'Dilbar Mere'. In a quick brief chat, Nikhil takes us through his
best tracks from Mani Ratnam films, including Raavan and more.

Favourite soundtrack from Hindi film

I have stories behind each one of my favourite soundtracks. But my 'the
favourite' soundtrack from a Hindi film has to be 'Dilbar Mere' from
Satte Pe Satta. All the seven songs from the album are my favourite.
It's the best album I've ever heard. It's strange but that's the fact.
The first brush of music remains with you throughout your life. It's
mystical. When I was a young boy, Satte Pe Satta released. Over the
years, the music of that film has grown for me. Not to forget, it had my
favourite actor, Mr Amitabh Bachchan. It had my favourite music
composer, Mr R.D. Burman. It had Kishore Kumar singing the songs. It had
Asha Bhonsle who is my favourite too. I think Amitabh Bachchan has never
looked so handsome to me in his entire life than in Satte Pe Satta.

Favourite soundtrack from Raavan

It has to be the title track 'Beera'. Yes, what a wonderful way to
describe Raavan in that song. It says so much and everything about this
man called Raavan. People have liked the Mission Impossible themes,
National Anthems, James Bond themes, etc. You get the idea of what
Raavan is all about. It has superb lyrics from Gulzaar saab and music
woven beautifully by the genius A.R. Rahman.

Raavan music - Not that great?

When any of A.R. Rahman albums release, everyone says that the album is
not that great. Thirty days later, they'll say 'Oh, it's catching on'
and sixty days later they'll say 'It's the greatest album ever
produced.' I am hardly surprised by the reactions of the music reviews.
Why this demand for difference? Mani Ratnam is a maker who isn't trying
to create a different album. He isn't a pop artist. He is a filmmaker.
He will create songs that'll do justice to the scenes and its story and
its characters. Mani's songs take the story forward. How different does
a 'Dangerous' sound from a 'Thriller'? It's the same crooning of Michael
Jackson. It's the same innuendo's. There will always be a difference in
A.R. Rahman tracks, Michael Jackson tracks and R.D. Burman tracks but
yet they are not different and that's why we like these composers.

Favourite Mani Ratnam film soundtrack

My favourite track from any of Mani's film is 'Chaiya Chaiya' from Dil
Se. I liked 'Huma Huma' too from Bombay. It was the biggest hit ever
from Mani Ratnam films. I like 'Anjaana' from Yuva too. Again, all three
songs were commercial hits.

Resul Pookutty and A R Rahman

The three Oscar winners, A R Rahman, Resul Pookutty and Gulzar, who took
India to the Acadamy Awards with their contribution to the award-winning
Slumdog Millionaire, were seen once again sharing the same platform.

Only this time, it wasn’t for Danny Boyle! It was a literary do in honour of
sound expert Resul and the legendary musician Rahman and lyricist Gulzar
graced the event where the Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayan was the
chief guest.

It’s not often that you get to see the trio together, what with all three of
them leading such busy ‘musical’ lives. So to watch them and support Resul,
many celebs turned up on Friday evening at a suburban five star hotel. S
Sreesanth, Parvati Omnakuttan, Priyanka Shah,

Rahman: Honour from home

Tomorrow’s function to launch the theme song for the
World Classical Tamil Conference has got a new highlight now. For the
State government has decided to honour A R Rahman, who has composed
music for the song, for bringing home the Oscars and the Grammy.
An official communication said Chief Minister M
Karunanidhi, who has penned lyrics for the theme song ‘Pirapokkum Ella
Uyirkkum….’ will felicitate Rahman at the function to be held at the
Centenary Auditorum of the Madras University.
Besides, there will be a concert by Drummer Sivamani
at the event to be attended by music legend L Subramaniam, filmmaker
Gautham Vasudev Menon (director for the song’s visual version), Central
and State Ministers, top officials and Tamil scholars.
The song is said to be quite an audio-visual treat,
besides being a fine tribute to the classical language. Over 50
top-notch artists from different genres, including playback music,
Carnatic, folk and Sufi have participated in this rare, special
confluence.
The song would be played at theatres, on television
channels and other forums in the run-up to the conference to be held in
June, in Coimbatore. According to Rahman, he only saw this opportunity
as a boon to pay a tribute to Tamil through the anthem.

[arr] Rahman gives Indian music tech spin

Rahman gives Indian music tech spin20 North American and European dates setBy
Gary Graff, BillboardMay 5, 2010, 06:00 AM ETA. R. Rahman. (Getty)DETROIT --
Iconic Indian film score composer A.R. Rahman said he's looking forward to
bringing East and West together with his upcoming "The A.R. Rahamn Jai Ho
Concert: The Journey Home World Tour."

"We wanted to get the best of both worlds -- the finest team from America and
the soul of the music and the traditions of India and all that stuff," Rahman
said about the tour, which begins June 11 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island and
will play at least 20 shows in North America and Europe. Staged by American
creative director Amy Tinkham (Madonna, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Paul
McCartney), the two-and-a-half hour show will feature a cast of musicians,
dancers and acrobats, plus changing sets and an extensive video production.

"What is added is a new dimension which nobody has ever seen, the Asian
audience has never seen," added Rahman, who won a pair of both Academy and
Grammy awards for his 2008 "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack. "Normally what
happens is we go and sing and there's some dancers and some kind of visual
effects. But this one is so integrated, and every (musical) bar and every
second is integrated with technology and stuff which moves around and it's done
with so much passion.

Rahman himself will be playing keyboards and singing during the show, as well
as speaking to the audience to explain the meanings and creation of the songs.
"We're looking at a universal appeal to this," he explained. "There's some
songs in English, of course, but even for those that aren't you can still come
and enjoy the musicality and the whole culture and colorfulness and the
vibrancy of Indian stuff. That's all going to be there.

"

Though the show is keeping him busy, Rahman is still busy working on new
music. He's just finishing up his 10th soundtrack for his original employer and
mentor, Rajat Kamal, and Rahman has also started work on a non-film album of
original songs that will target the North American markets he conquered with
"Slumdog Millionaire" and the single "Jai Ho." "It's a work in progress."

Rahman reported, "I've had three or four sessions already. The music is
probably an extension of what 'Jai Ho' did but going more friendly in terms of
English audiences. It's retaining the same kind of magic, hopefully."

Rahman
says he's also been approached about collaborations by "most" of the artists he
joined for the "We Are the World: 25 for Haiti" single earlier this year, but
"I'm taking it easy. I want to finish my album first."

[arr] Rahman-Gulzar – Jodi No 1

2010-05-05 Thread A.R.Rajib
 *Rahman-Gulzar – Jodi No 1*
 - Arpi Shah
Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan in `Raavan`
Bollywood’s departmental working style necessitates the formation of
partnerships. Unlike songwriting in the west, where lyrics, music and
singing, is provided by the same person, Bollywood employs lyricists,
musicians and singers.

Since the arts adheres to ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ rather than ‘many
hands make light work’, this can prohibit the creation of a focused work –
unless you find people who can work in unison, of course. This applies to
the jodi of A R Rahman and Gulzar, who, though three decades apart in age,
are able to channel all their powers in the same direction.

The last time music director A R Rahman and lyricist Gulzar came together,
they won an Oscar and a Grammy for the global sensation ‘Jai Ho’ (*Slumdog
Millionaire*). The magical duo, which is yet to see failure, is back with
yet another winner, Mani Ratnam’s* Raavan*. You may argue that Mani Ratnam
has also been influential in bringing the best out of Rahman, but that’s
another feature.

For now, *Raavan*’s music is ferociously climbing up the charts, within days
of its release. Take the pounding ‘Thok De Khilli’, brilliantly sung by
Sukhwinder Singh, as an example. While Rahman pumps some intense drama into
the equation, Gulzar provides reflective lines such as ‘Kisme Dum Hai Ki
Suraj Bhujaiye?'

Rahman and Gulzar came together for the first time in 1998 for Ratnam’s *Dil
Se*. The duo struck gold in their first outing as Rahman won Filmfare’s Best
Music Director Award and the song ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ was ranked 9th in BBC
World Service top 10 songs of all time.
Perhaps ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’s beats propel it in lists, but other tracks like
‘Ae Ajnabi’, ‘Satrangi Re’ and ‘Dil Se’ highlight Rahman’s penchant for
innovation and Gulzar’s ability to play with words. ‘Dil Se’ is a classic
example of the duo’s genius. As Gulzar sets up a deeply contemplative verse,
Rahman plunders the most pensive beats on his palette to create a truly
great composition. There are very few albums with music that reaches out to
a wide variety of cultures, traditions and people. Dil Se, which still
strongly sticks to Indian music, is one such album.

The reason for their success – and evidence of their genius – is their
ability for innovation. Gulzar says, “Our association started with *Dil Se*.
His (Rahman’s) music has always touched my heart, but even after all these
years he manages to surprise me. Many a times when we are composing, we get
into discussions and he comes up with something completely different, a
unique song independent of genres, and that is what keeps him right there,
at the top. I have emphasised often that Rahman has broken the fixed format
of mukdha-antara-mukhda. A song with him runs like a poem and I feel like I
am writing poetry with him, always.”

Rahman’s overpowering rhythm and Gulzar’s excellent poetry was on full
display again in 2002 when they put their heads together for Yash Raj
Films’ *Saathiya*. The album has one of the most commendable compositions by
Rahman, enriched further by Gulzar’s meaningful lyrics.

The title track is something which one can attribute to Rahman on first
hearing. It is a melodious number with the rich flute solos and guitar
accompaniment in the backdrop. From western genre to a romantic number to
Punjabi folk, the album showcases the musical and poetic genius of the
Rahman-Gulzar duo.

*Guru* marked the third pairing of the two in Bollywood, and was one of
those most anticipated soundtracks of the year 2006. Beautiful words, lively
beats and powerful vocals make the album a complete treat for your ears that
you just can’t afford to miss.

‘Tere Bina’, the captivating number sung by Rahman, had a desi feel to it
and is a mix of Indian classical and Sufi. Unlike numerous Rahman numbers
that take their own time to catch up with a listener, this one gets you
hooked on right away. The other tracks like ‘Ek Lo Ek Muft’ and ‘Baazi Laga’
are both interesting and unconventional. ‘Mayaa Mayya’ has a strong
Middle-East flavour to it and is brilliantly fused with Gujarati folk music.

Great partnerships are rarely found, not just in Bollywood, but in any
creative field. Now that we have found one, let’s just hope they’ve got
enough to keep us satisfied. But will we ever be?

He is a man of few words yet his music does all the talking. Directors from
Bollywood as well as Hollywood wish to have him compose music for their films
yet his super-busy schedule allows him to green-light only a handful of
projects. Over the last couple of years, he has bagged every possible award
from the Padma Bhushan to the BAFTA's and the Grammy to the Oscars yet he
remains as humble as ever. Last week he once again gave his millions of fans a
reason to cheer in the form of the spectacular musical score of Raavan. He is
none other than Allah Rakha Rahman- the man who eats, breathes and (whenever
he) sleeps music. Bollywood Hungama's Nikhil Ramsubramaniam caught up with the
Musical Maestro for an exclusive interview to talk about the experience of
composing music for Raavan, his special bonding with Mani Ratnam, his much
talked about world tour and much more. Read on...

18 years after debuting with Mani Ratnam's Roja, you are back once again with
Mani for Raavan. How has the journey been?
It's all been very good and exciting. The thing with Mani is that he receives
every idea with great respect. It's not just the usual "Give me 5 tunes for my
film" We try to explore various avenues while composing the music in the
interest of the film.

In spite of your super-busy schedule you always manage to take out time for a
Mani Ratnam project. You have composed music for all his films. What is it
about Mani that makes it difficult for you to say 'No' to him?
After a point I think you understand exactly what a person needs and what is it
that he actually wants. It's pretty much the case between Mani and I. However
having said that, getting such vibes and sharing such a comfort level with
someone is easier said than done. By the grace of God we've pulled it so far
and continue to do so in the future (smiles).

The one word synonymous with your music is Experimentation. So what kind of
experimentation have you tried in Raavan?
I don't think in terms of experimentation in each project that I do. I just go
with a theme that will make the project sound exciting. In case of Raavan, we
have used a lot of African vocals and sounds in some of the songs keeping with
the mood and theme of the film.

The music of Raavan released last amidst much fanfare. There are 6 tracks in
the album. Could you take us through each of the tracks in your own words and
explain the essence of songs...

'Beera Beera'

'Beera' is a song that describes the lead character played by Abhishek
Bachchan. When we set out to compose this song, we didn't want to make the song
or the character seem dark. We wanted 'Beera' to be liked by everyone. He is
someone who has a point of view, it may be wrong according to some sections of
the society but when you see the film you will realize his justification for
the same. The song is like a celebration of his character.

'Behne De'

Karthik sang this song as a scratch. At that point in time, we didn't know if
we were going to retain it but everyone seemed to like the version and we did
retain it. We also added some background vocals by Mohammed Irfan to give a
different edge to the song. It's not your usual typical song.

'Ranjha Ranjha'

'Ranjha Ranjha' is an idea that I had done earlier but gave it a skip. It's
poetry of Baba Bulleshah. Though the song that you hear in the album (sung by
Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali and Anuradha Sriram) doesn't feature in the movie, we
have created another version of the song that is sung by Ila Arun and Richa
Sharma which would be featured in the film. This version has been shot
beautifully and works better for the film.

'Thok De Khilli'

'Thok De Khilli' of course has Sukhwinder at his energetic best. He is simply a
powerhouse of energy and talent. However, in this song he didn't get a chance
to improvise a lot as he had to fit his vocals to match the form of the song.
In spite of that he has done a fabulous job

'Kata Kata'

'Kata Kata' is a very typical Mani Ratnam style song. In every film of his you
have this folk celebration kind of song like you had 'Chalka Chalka Re' in
Saathiya or for that matter 'Rukmani Rukmani' in Roja. However, this time we
have given it a different feel and it was really an enjoyable process composing
this track

'Khilli Re'

'Khilli Re' has been sung by Reena Bhardwaj who earlier sang 'Yeh Rishta' from
Meenaxi. She has got a beautiful voice which suited the song perfectly. She is
a very talented singer who certainly deserves more opportunities in the future.

During the music launch you also surprised everyone by composing and singing a
new additional song 'Jaa Re Udd Jaa Re'. Is that song going to be added later
in the album or featured in t

It's just about having demand alone. A lot of other stuffs are to be taken into

I think this is a great idea too. It is extremely frustrating that a
finished product which is just a few mouse clicks way to be put on a CD goes
into oblivion for unjustified reasons. I can understand the songs getting
edited out in the movie to help the narrative but not their omission on the
audio CD.

And this is not just limited to Raavan. There have been several instances in
the past too.

Look at the whole Connections episode where a bunch of masterpieces like Man
Chandre Nu and Mosquito can not be heard legally unless you buy a cell phone
that has by now become defunct. The soundtrack of Provoked went unreleased too.

I understand that it is not AR's sole responsibility to ensure that all his
music reaches our ears and there are several copyright issues that need to be
sorted
but if any one person can make it happen it is AR.

In this age where music can be distributed digitally with minimum costs and
with an official web store already in place, a legal digital download process
is good start for his unreleased tracks and background scores.

I sincerely hope that this thread generates enough buzz to garner a critical

[arr] Rahman scores Raavan in a month

*Rahman scores Raavan in a month*
Buzz u*

For those who have worked with A R
Rahman,
this news is no surprise. The musical genius, who has fans the world over,
is known to work and re-work and still re-work a lot of his work for movies
till he is satisfied. *
And his satisfaction, well, it can come even just a day before your album
is all set to be unveiled. And that’s how things worked for Mani Ratnam’s *
Raavan
*as well.

“As always, this album all came together only last month. But it was a lot
of fun working with Gulzar and Mani,” says Rahman with a mischievous smile.

A source from the film tells us more. “Mani was quite clear that he wanted
Rahman to work on the soundtrack of his epic film – both the Hindi and Tamil
version. But AR’s manic schedule meant things weren’t signed and sealed till
the last minute. In fact, he did record some tracks and send them to Mani to
listen to. Everyone loved what they heard,” says the source. “But last
month, Rahman called Mani and said he had re-worked tracks and was sending a
new lot of scratch material for him to hear. It was these new tracks that
have become the final album,” adds the source.

This is not the first time that Rahman has called back his scores and
re-worked them. Whether it’s been Hollywood films like *The Couples
Retreat* or,
even closer home, Subhash Ghai’s
*Yuvvraaj
,* Rahman has often called back his work and redone them till he himself is
completely satisfied.

It’s no wonder then, with such dedication and passion for his work, that
Rahman is dubbed as the Mozart from Madras!

[arr] Rahman gets a big deal for Games song

2010-04-28 Thread Siddiq Rahman
Rahman gets a big deal for Games song

For all those who had forgotten Ripley's Believe It Or Not, here's how money is
being spent for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
A.R. Rahman, revered for his soul-stirring music and recently
bestowed the Padma Vibhushan by the government, will be paid close to
Rs 5.5 crore by the Games' Organising Committee (OC) for composing the
opening ceremony theme song.
Sources confirmed that Rahman would also be associated with
'promotional events' relating to the October 3-14 sporting extravaganza
to be held in the Capital.
Hectic parleys have been going on between Rahman's agents and OC
officials for quite some time now. Sources said the initial demand from
the music guru was close to Rs 15 crore.
Considering that all this money is basically what the common man
pays as income tax, it was decided that about Rs 5 crore was an
agreeable figure.
Not just this, the income tax payable on the sum will be picked up
by the OC. The committee will also foot Rahman's "hotel and travel to
New Delhi" bills.
All this was recently cleared by the OC's executive committee which met in New
Delhi.
Mail Today has also learnt that Bharat Bala, a man
associated with the opening and closing ceremonies as creative
director, is getting Rs 25 lakh per month as salary. His taxes are
taken care of and Bala also gets paid "out-of-pocket allowance". At a
time when the cost of hosting the Games has touched the sky, a sum of
Rs 200 crore has been budgeted just for the opening and closing
ceremonies.
Despite demands that every rupee spent should be accounted for,
insiders say people are spending money on events not directly related
to the Games.
"How come there is no patriotism involved now? It's baffling how the
OC is going to pay Rs 5 crore to Rahman," a committee insider said.
Another supported hiring the services of Rahman.
"He is such a well-known figure and has won all kinds of
international awards. What is wrong if he is being paid for it," the
insider said.
But the point is that when athletes in India are struggling to get
money and facilities to hire the best coaches in the business, funds
being wasted on the cultural extravaganza are hard to justify.
According to the budget provided by the government for the Games,
ministries and departments get Rs 8,343 crore and the Delhi government
Rs 2,800 crore.
There are other expenditures which seem high. For the conduct of the
Games, the OC gets Rs 1,620 crore. For the "Overlays", it gets Rs 687
crore.
Another item which catches the eye on the official website is the
expenditure of Rs 87.25 crore on timing scoring result (TSR) and Games
time sports equipment.
With the OC now coming under RTI purvey, questions are bound to be asked on how
the taxpayers' money is going to be spent.

Rahman rhapsody

The score of the much-awaited "Raavan" is proof that A.R. Rahman saves his best
for old friend Mani Ratnam

HIGH ON SONGS"Raavan"
Here's a Dare. Try keeping yourself away from not tuning in to this album. The
songs will find you no matter where you go for the next three months — as
ringtones, caller tunes, friend's car stereos, before it finally takes over
your iTunes playlist.

"Raavan" is further proof that A.R. Rahman always saves some of his best stuff
for old friend Mani Ratnam. That appetising teaser playing on TV with chants of
Beera is guaranteed to make even the cynics take that dive straight into the
album.

The magic of sounds

"Raavan" begins with a paean to Beera (Vijay Prakash, Mustafa Kutuane and
Keerthi Sagathia) with an African tribal vibe, a little "Lion King"-ish, thanks
to its jungle rhythms and the percussion pepping up the ode to the riotous
Raavan.

The song establishes the character of the protagonist, and we see him as a
grown-up Mowgli, bursting with energy, cruising through the jungle, and gearing
up for a ride into the wild, warned not to mess with Beera — because he's all
about Abhimaan (pride or ego as we've heard from the myth).

Gulzar has a lot more to do in the melancholic second track `Behene De' that
begins with a pall of gloom (faint drum beats and ambient sounds) — sort of an
aftermath song.

Despite the hurting, we see that Raavan hasn't lost his sense of pride.
Beautiful similes of fire and water punctuate this mood song that packs in the
pain and angst of Raavan. Soulfully rendered by Karthik (and additional vocals
by Mohammed Irfan).

The energetic `Thok De Khilli' (Sukhwinder Singh, Am'nico) comes up next as an
anthem for revolution. The situation seems to be inter-cut with a wedding
sequence as the shehnai smoothly blends into the revolt song, and we can be
assured of some intense drama in the choreography, what with lyrics such as
`Kisme Dum Hai Ki Suraj Bhujaiye?' (Who has the guts to extinguish the sun?)
and a crescendo. Rahman sets it up for a volatile encounter. The song suggests
that Mani Ratnam's "Raavan" is tired of decades of the differences between the
haves and the have-nots.

`Ranjha Ranjha' (Rekha Bharadwaj, Javed Ali and additional vocals by Anuradha
Sriram) seems to be the outlet for Raavan's angst of his unrequited love, and
Rahman packs in some more soul. Again, a great opportunity for Gulzar to delve
into the pangs of love and longing.

Love ballad

We suspect this happens after the abduction when Raavan finds himself crazy in
love with his captive. This could also be the only opportunity for the item
number, with Rahman infusing slow dance beats into this pathos-filled love
ballad — maybe a couple of street performers echoing his sentiments.

There's a certain vulnerability about Rekha Bhardwaj's voice that helps Rahman
churn out the album's only slow song — a beautiful melody, done Hindustani
style, with Naveen's flute and tabla giving ample scope for Aishwarya to
showcase her dancing skills. This song is bound to sound way better at the end
of a long day, a soothing song about a girl's love for her piya (husband).
Probably, the only song Ram gets in "Raavan"'s album?

There are going to be numerous comparisons between `Kata Kata' (Ila Arun, Sapna
Awasthi, Kunal Ganjawalla) and `Rukmani Rukmani', both being wedding songs
involving a group of singers, but if `Rukmani…' was a mischievous set-up for
the nuptial night, this one's sung like a warning (`Kata Kata Bechara Bakra'),
but with equal amount of revelry and fanfare. `One more bites the dust' is the
sentiment, but the shehnai and the dhol, coupled with Kerala-flavoured
percussion building up to a riotous climax, may make it a favourite at weddings.

There's no escaping "Raavan". Or Rahman. They will get you.

Rahman: I’m happy and deeply honoured

It was a very special moment for music maestro A R
Rahman, who had dedicated his Oscar trophy to his mother, when he
received the Padma Bhushan award in her company at the Rashtrapati
Bhawan.
The maestro was awarded the Padma Bhushan
by President Pratibha Patil in the ceremony on Wednesday, which also
saw actor Aamir Khan become the youngest recipient of the honour.
“I am happy and deeply honoured,” the 44-year-old musician who brought
glory to the country with his double Oscar win and then brought home
two Grammies earlier this year, told PTI.
Rahman’s mother Kareema Begum shuns publicity but has been at the
artiste’s side throughout his rise to stardom and the music for many of
his films including Rangeela and Yuvraaj were launched by her.
The
artiste is currently preparing for his much-awaited ‘Jai Ho Concert:
The Journey Home’ World Tour, which will kickstart from June 11 in New
York and travel to over 20 major arenas and cities worldwide.
Well-known choreographer-director Amy Tinkham, who has worked on the
live musical concerts for pop icons like Paul McCartney, Madonna,
Britney Spears, Dixie Chicks and Motley Crue, has teamed up for the
tour.

I agree to you 100%. People in the West have always been the giants because
they fall under a widely accepted market, which is all over the world. But
according to me, what AR is showcasing is his own works in India to the Western
World, who majority at this point would have only heard his Slumdog/Couple' s
retreat but they should also get to hear our legends many other gems. I think
this is the very best time to come and attack, rather than wait for more
western recognition and stuff like that. There is this proverb "Make hay while
Sun shines" and I'm sure our AR will make his Music Shine in the West too,
through this concert. Plus its a great feeling to spread Indian Music and I'm
happy to see AR doing it. So lets promote this idea, rather than comparing him
to the people from the West.

Just my 2 cents :)

also publish some exclusive info on ARR. silly them.

i personally think that ARR has done too many concerts in the past 3 years.
may be for atleast another year or two, he should not do any concerts.

Hi Kitcha Swamy, even though I agree with you that concerts will be
helpful to Rahman sir to increase his popularity, I think the first statement
is a bit exaggerated when considering the people in west. We need to be
realistic even if we are diehard fans. Rahman sir may be popular in the
west(more after the Oscars), I think it is not that big compared to other pop
stars or composers there. His works and concerts from now on will be
determining his extent of popularity in the west.
So lets pray and hope that Rahman sir will achieve even more greater heights.

What?? More popular :). Come on Man. AR has already gained humongous popularity
and these concerts will only keep him going way past those skies. Namba
thalaivar "Vinnaith thaandi poyaachu" lol. Means, he has crossed the skies.

I love this concert idea. I don't think any artist in the world would have
covered 17 concerts in a span of 6 weeks. I'm sure the crowd is going to have a
fantabulous night of the year in every destination.

Jai Ho to the Jai Ho Concert...

. R. Rahman plans to be out of India for the longest period. And Bollywood
filmmakers like Abbas Tyrewala and Mani Ratnam who have pending work with
Rahman have pressed the panic button.

Rahman won't be available for film scores during most of 2010. "It's a very
tough schedule for me this year," says Rahman. "I'll be out of the country for
five months which I've kept aside completely for the word tour."

essentially need time for my music, spirituality and family. Everything else is

I'll be touring from this month (March 2010).This would be my longest tour ever

Contrary to reports Rahman turned 43 (and not 44) on January 6. "I was born in

want to do today, not tomorrow. If I want to do good things in life I better do
them now."

Rahman says he doesn't fear death. "I think about death every day. Last year I
lost a couple of very close friends. I've been watching people close to me die

Rahman admits time management is a problem. "But you have to prioritize your

my concerts."

father regularly. Or they'll soon start calling me Uncle."

Rahman has just done soundtrack for Tamil film directed by Gautam Menon. "Then
I've Mani Ratnam's Raavan and Abbas Tyrewala's 1-800-Love. Also Shekhar
Kapoor's Paani which is a very important film. I've recorded one song for it.

[arr] Rahman to write autobiography?

Rahman to write autobiography?

Oscar winning music director A.R. Rahman will pen his experiences starting
fromRoja (his debut film) to the yet-to-be released Mani Ratnam's Raavan.
Reportedly the book will be of a coffee table kind and will also
contain photos of about 300 singers with comments from the Mozart of
Madras.
Rahman began composing film music with Mani Ratnam's Roja (Tamil) in 1992 after
assisting Tamil film maestro Ilaiyaraja for
nearly a decade. He was awarded the Rajat Kamal award for Best Music
Director at the National Film Awards for the film, the first time ever
for a debut composer and after that, his career has shown an
ever-increasing upward trend. Roja was also listed in TIME's
Top 10 Movie Soundtracks of All Time. Rahman went on to win the
National Award three more times, for his scores for Minsaara Kanavu in
1997,Lagaan in 2002 and Kannathil Muthamittal, the most ever by any composer.
And he has won the Filmfare Award 25 times!

Why has there been almost nothing on this event? For me, this is the biggest
event this year - AR Rahman and the famous London Philharmonic Orchestra  (
Rahman's music in Orchestral form=divine!) and hardly any press
releases/publicity or official announcements about this event. Slightly
disappointed!

in fact, it is sad that he is dumping Pritam afer Love Aaj Kal got so
many awards and Jab we met was also quite popular. It reflects bad on
the Imtiyaz's trustworthyness. May be, it is just some clash of dates
with Pritam, and not a permanent parting of ways.

Anyway. Imtiyaz does have a good sense of music as is reflected from
his both films. Hope he will prove like a Subhash Ghai + ARR combo
bringing great music to us.

[arr] Rahman confirmed he’s composing music for R ock Star

2010-03-09 Thread Jafar K

For Imtiaz, its Rahman over Pritam

After composing chartbusting scores in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal
one would think music composer Pritam Chakraborty is an integral and
indispensable part of Imtiaz’s cinema. Surprisingly, that’s not the case any
longer, at least not as far as Imtiaz’s next film, Rock Star is concerned.

The emotional composer tried to hide his hurt as well as he could and said, “I
haven’t been approached for Rock Star. I’ve heard that Rahman is doing it. Am I
hurt about not being part of Imtiaz’s new film? I’ve been too busy to think
about it. I’m sure we’ll work together again in the future.”

Although Imtiaz remained unavailable for comment it is no secret that the
filmmaker is known to let his head and not his heart rule when it comes to
deciding his cast and crew. For instance, despite creating magic with Kareena
Kapoor in Jab We Met he signed Deepika Padukone for Love Aaj Kal although
Kareena, incidentally the film’s producer Saif Ali Khan’s lady-love, was very
keen to be part of the film.

Kareena too couldn’t hide her hurt when she publicly admitted while receiving
the best actress award for Jab We Met that she was upset with Imtiaz for not
casting her in Love Aaj Kal. Even after Love Aaj Kal, Imtiaz chose Ranbir
Kapoor over Saif Ali Khan in Rock Star although the latter had at one point
been signed for it. Pritam’s exclusion is particularly surprising as he was
known to be a close friend of Imtiaz.

According to reliable sources, the magical AR Rahman has already recorded two
songs for Rock Star. While this fresh director-music composer jodi will be
something to look forward to, those hoping to see Imtiaz and Pritam form a
Nasir Hussain-RD Burman kind of director-composer team will surely be
disappointed.

Rahman confirmed he’s composing music for Rock Star. “I will do it after I meet
Imtiaz since one-fourth of the music is ready,” he said.

[arr] “Rahman has played an important role in taking cla ssical music to the youngsters,” says Dr. Narayanan

2010-02-16 Thread Vithur
He’s a singer, a miniature figurines collector and a homeopathy doctor, all
rolled in one...

Simba, Dumbo, Bamby and Aladdin are among Dr K Narayanan’s best friends.
When he’s done with his work for the day and sits back in contemplation,
they serve as companions. They might look the same to an ordinary person,
but Narayanan spots a different dimension in them, every day!

“Look at the texture on this guy here,” he calls out with child-like
enthusiasm, “Doesn’t it look fascinating?”

Dr K Narayanan — who is perhaps one of the few collectors of miniature
figurines in the city — considers them ‘real treasures’. “If you like
nature, you’ll be able to appreciate these figures completely,” explains
Narayanan, whose collection includes animals, replicas and movie characters
among others.

His collection is the result of several years of travel to countries like
Germany, the US, Canada, UK and Australia. Made of high quality vinyl
plastic, these figurines are considered a collector’s delight world over. “I
also have figures of some of the rarest animal species,” he tells proudly,
“Some of them are the aardvark, dodo, pangolin and sloth. They aren’t easily
available.”

Once he collects his treasures, he gets on to the Internet. “I search for
pictures and information on those animals to find out how much of detailing
has gone into the making of the toy,” he says, “This helps me in obtaining
trivias about these rare animals.”

Narayanan is also a much sought-after singer. His association with
Oscar-winner A R Rahman started during Kandukondein Kandukondein and has
continued till the recent Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. “Rahman has played an
important role in taking classical music to the youngsters,” says Narayanan,
a passionate Carnatic music buff, who trained under the music exponent, late
S Rajam.
On its influence on the present-day film music, he says, “There’s a lot of
richness in classical music that’s still unexplored. My guru used to tell us
that if we mastered the 72 melakarta ragams, we could sing anything!”

Narayanan’s rendition of Veda Ghosham..., the title track of the popular
television serial Enge Brahmanan, has appealed to many people. “Even
children are singing that tune,” he gushes with pride.

Currently, the singer — who is also a caricature artist and a homeopathy
doctor — is looking forward to his trip to New Zealand and Australia, where
he’ll present three-hour concerts that will feature traditional, semi
classical and film songs, based on classical ragas.
