Re: CI Viewer - CMDB Libraries are not available?
Hello, I often wish a complete set of API libraries for all platforms was readily available. I tire of putting together a set by pulling apart installation sets. Given the sheer amount of C libraries shipped with the Java jars, it's becoming increasingly difficult to figure out what's relevant and what's not. Perhaps someone at BMC wishes to write to me and I'll let them know precisely what they need to do in order to make API development much easier? Re: Apple Safari Web Interface
Carey, Actually, you're wrong. Safari is probably more standards compliant than IE - it's built on the KHTML rendering engine. It's not hard to make something work with all browsers, bearing in mind that all browsers deviate from the standards in some way. BMC have simply chosen not to, I assume because of cost/lack of skills. John ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org ARSlist:Where the Answers Are

User permissions
Hello, We have recently upgraded to v7 of ARS (from v4.0!!) which was done via a new install. Obviously lots of things have changed between the two versions, but there is one thing I dont seem to be able to nail. We are intending to use mid-tier to allow users to submit and review their own tickets, and have set up some LDAP authentication against AD for this and it works well utlising the submitter field. We can further use field permissions to restrict access so the user can only see their entries and nobody elses. This is what we want. However, we also have notifications going out from the form in question that go to what would be deemed public email addresses (ie dont appear in ARS) and for the field values to work we need to open up permissions for Public on the fields, which then breaks the user access as they can then see all of the calls. Is there a way of locking down permissions to allow both functions to happen correctly, or perhaps a way for the notification to be run as a defined user that we can assign a group permission for (instead of Public) ? Re: User permissions
Colin, One option is to have workflow compose the data into a field that the user does have access to. (So that for that record, and for the transaction of the Submit/Modify, the user has access to the data via an authorized path provided by workflow.) You could also opt to convert your Notify action into a Push action that manually creates a record in the AR System Email Messages form. However I think that will require a bit more work and could offer some distinct advantages/disadvantages too. However, I think the only field where this is particularly problematic is really the 'Request ID' (field 1). If you are controlling row level access with field 1 then that is the only field that MUST NOT be Public. The other fields might be ok to be Public because that would still be restricted by the permissions on field 1. -- Carey Matthew Black Remedy Skilled Professional (RSP) ARS = Action Request System(Remedy) Love, then teach Solution = People + Process + Tools Fast, Accurate, Cheap Pick two. Re: User permissions
I can think of two ways to do this. - One, you make the field public and enforce permissions through workflow. - Two, you keep the current permissions on the field you have and create another hidden field with public permissions where you mirror the value of the original field. Re: Workflow
The bottom line is that it would have to be something that resided on the client. Can you imagine the client/server traffic involved if it had to have workflow or a DB trigger update a field every time a character was typed? Perhaps the easiest workaround would be to size your field to exactly the field length of it. That would at least give the users a visual cue as to how much more they could type. Re: Workflow
I thought of one way to make the counter work...you can use an active link that fires on gain focus of the field and on a 3 second interval and sets your counter field based on the LENGTH() function. I haven't thought about it long enough to figure out how to stop the active link once the interval begins. It's not real time...but 3 seconds is close if you're a slow typer... Re: Workflow
Darshana, Rick, Dan Saravanan, The enhancement request for the full client and the Midtier would be great but there is an alternative with AL workflow and the interval. Granted it has a minimum of 3 seconds but you could fire a set fields on interval that counts the length of the current field and subtracts it from the known max length of the field. Now there is the issue of trying to activate/deactivate the interval so it only runs when needed. Maybe inside an AL Guide? John J. OT- CMDB 2.01 supported with Helpdesk 6.0 Application?
All I can really contribute to this conversation is that I absolutely 100% hate the CMDB. It makes adding fields to the asset records a real PITA! In an environment where we have all been used to being able to customize to the needs of our organizations, this is cumbersome and clunky. It drags the system down and has taken a process that was clean and simple and complicated it to the extent that in some cases you probably would be better off having someone from PS come assist. BUT, would they know what they are doing and be able to do it any better than I can? I dunno! Re: Workflow
Hi, PL.Saravanan: I have a suggestion, but it might be a performance killer. Create an active link that fires on Interval every 3 seconds, where $FIELDLABEL$ = my field, that sets your counter field with the length of the text. Or, with the Field Size - length of the current text. Example: Let's say I have a Description field with 1000 characters Execute On: Interval, Gain Focus on Description Basic Qual: $FIELDLABEL$ = Description Set Fields Action: My CounterField: LENGTH(Description) This will give me the length of the text. Or, Set Fields Action Or, CounterField: 1000 - LENGTH(Description) This will give the space remaining in the field. I've tested it on ARS 6.3 P20 and Remedy User 6.3 P20. The Active link will stop once the focus is lost from the field. The three second interval makes it seem kind of slow for fast typists, but it works. Re: CMDB 2.01 supported with Helpdesk 6.0 Application?
I think it is due to the fact that since they decided to re-design the whole thing and did not anticipate having it work with 6 that they left out datapoints and workflow logic that 6 uses and now they have to re-invent the wheel. I would think that the Remedy Sales holdovers would have suggested that CMDB 2 work with ITSM 6 to ease the transition however we all know that there are very few legacy Remedy Sales staff left. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 11:25 AM Subject: Re: CMDB 2.01 supported with Helpdesk 6.0 Application? ** I know what they did, Roger. But here is some information that might help you figure it out based on the rest of the data you see in the logs. ( I am only talking about outbound email here. ) What the Email Engine does is login to the ARS sever (using the application password) and get the Email Config info. Assuming that works then it should be able to also read data from the AR System Email Messages form. It will use the Email Config info to do the right thing with messages that are waiting to be sent. ('Send Message' = Yes) If the Email Engine is getting this far and failing to connect to the SMTP server then I think you will only see errors in the email engine logs. (But you might also see AR System Email Error Log form entries too.) ON the other hand If the Email Engine is unable to talk to the ARS server (via the application password) then it will not even be able to read the Email Config form or the AR System Email Messages form. So if that Authentication error is specific to the SMTP server, then you likely need to fix the data in the MailBox Config form. (or maybe your NT Account has been locked/disabled/password changed?) If the Authentication error is specific to the Email Engine login to ARS, then you need to updates is application password in it's config file. (See the docs for details.) Re: Issues since patch #19 or #20 - Uh-Oh
Was this release tested? No sarcasm intended. A customer should reasonably expect that before QA (Quality Assurance) gets their hands on a patch that the release would be finalized and any problems that QA finds would be fixed (and spawn a new release set to be retested by QA) before it is released to the customers. The QA approved release should be the exact form that it was released to QA, because there were zero bugs/problems found by QA. I mean if QA has Engineering do the install/setup it is not exactly a fair test now is it? Re: (ISSXXXXXXXX, 3-Medium) SupID:XXXXXX (rant)
Hey, if they were using ITSM 7, you would find that all of your requests were not only Status=New but stuck In Process, meaning that they failed to create incidents and are stuck in the system. BTW, when that happens, a transaction rollback just took place on your SQL database server! In your case, it would be because of the BMC Custom filter named SRM:REQ:OnSubmit_RejectTonyWorthington. I think there's one in their system with my name on it, too. Consider the Requester Console; some of the most interesting documentation in the BMC Remedy Service Desk: Incident Management 7.0 User Guide (which is extremely content-sparse on most topics), is on how to operate as the Request Master and track down service requests that failed to properly create incidents. This module is so problematic that they felt that they had to include the tools to manage the failures! I guess I should be glad - it's like getting a tire jack with a new car - it's a component that is _expected_ to fail, so the repair tools are standard. I'm just not sure I like having a public interface to my customers that is so easily deflated. /whine Back to ITSM 7 incident process testing... Perhaps BMC should update its web page to more accurately describe for us their definition of various terms which we've come to believe mean apparently different things. Just to be sure that the expectations of those in the real business world are in line with what BMC feels is reality. I would post some sarcastic examples, but I don't want to impugn the competence of the good support techs they still have. Re: CMDB 2.01 supported with Helpdesk 6.0 Application?
I bet you're right about that, Roger. I agree that they didn't anticipate that so many customers would see ITSM 7 and say ...not so much - we'll stick with v6. If they had asked the customers or consultants, we could have told them that would happen. More BMC arrogance, in thinking they knew how to deal with the Remedy customer base? Part of me wants to say 'you can't'...because filters run on the server not the client...and your arsperl program is a client. That's actually a question to which I don't know the answer. Would there still be enough C/S traffic for the server to know that the Active Link has run? Re: Firing a filter with arsperl
If you'd submit data with ARSPerl this is being treated as any other method of data entry. That is, the filter will fire depending on the Run If qualification and the Submit / Modify / Merge checkboxes. -- Michiel On 1/30/07, Tom L [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone know how to fire an AR filter using arsperl? Re: Firing a filter with arsperl
I may be a bit confused here ... Since you have a filter to do your work you can have it fire on any modify or submit. If you only want it to fire for a specific process then you can create a Display Only field that the perl program puts a special value in when modifying the record and have the filter use that in the Run-If. Re: SSO Problem: AREA being called more than once
Hello Ben, I looked at the Configuration Guide's list of the parameters related to area and notification and this is what i found: Option: External-Authentication-Return-Data-Capabilities Description: A bit mask that allows you to specify the return data capabilities for the current AREA plugin. This setting does not control the AREA plugin, it merely desecribes the behavior of the plugin, allowing for server optimization. Acceptable values are as follows: - Bit 1 (Value = 1) - no email address will be provided - Bit 2 (Value = 2) - no notify mechanism will be provided - Bit 3 (Value = 4) - no group identifiers will be provided - Bit 4 (Value = 8) - no license information will be provided. - Bit 5 (Value = 16) - no notification user validation should occur. The default is 0, meaning the server wil attempt to retrieve this information from AREA. A value of 7 will allow the server to potentially reduce the number of AREA related calls during notification processing. A value of 16 will allow the server to avoid using AREA for notification user validation and information retrieval. Use this setting for sites using a form of AREA that applies user names as email addresses and where there is no benefit to accessing an authentication database. So if I put the External-Authentication-Return-Data-Capabilities in the ar.cfg and set it to 16, will ARS stop calling AREA twice? Carey, Maybe in this case, WE ARE QA? On a good note, we did go the installation executables path. We upgraded our ARS, Email, and Flashboards 6.3 P18 to ARS 6.3 P20 on a Windows 2003/Remote SQL Server environment. We uninstalled Mid-Tier 7.0.0 Patch 1 from our Windows 2003/IIS/Servlet Exec server, before installing Mid-Tier 7.0.1 Patch 1 on Windows 2003/IIS 6/Apache Tomcat 1.6.0.
