ERR: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Rpcbind failure - RPC: Failed (unspecified error)

2007-06-14 Thread Sharma, Tarun

Hello,

ARS 6.3, OS- SunOS 5.9, DB -Oracle 9.2.0.7.0

We are getting an error while trying to re-start arsystem on one of our
system. It is giving an error:

'RPC is not initialized'

I looked at arsystem script, some part of script is like this:

..

RPC=`rpcinfo -p > /dev/null 2>&1`

if [ $? != 0 ]; then

echo "RPC is not initialized."

exit 0

fi

...

So I checked directly with command: rpcinfo -p. It is not giving any
details of RPC and ports. It is giving error:

* rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Rpcbind failure - RPC:
Failed (unspecified error)

It seems that there is some problems with registered RPC Services.

It would be a great help if somebody can share his views regarding this
error or can suggest us exactly what we should do now to get out of this
problem?

-Tarun

Arsignal.exe might do the trick without having to restart the server. I
think the option you want is "-c", but check the manual.

Re: Risk Level calculation in 7

2007-06-14 Thread Covert, Jack
Ross, yes it is calculated. I have attached a spreadsheet that we are
using to give predictable risk levels. Yellow areas are to be filled
out, values for risk questions are to be 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100%. We're
going to take into consideration the highest priority of the related
assets as well, so that needs to be filled out. Be careful not to
overwrite any formulas.

BMC should have included something like this spreadsheet, there is no
way you could realistically do the computed risk w/o being able to
easily plug in some numbers and run it through the paces.

Hi Jack,

Can I assume by this question that you know how the Risk level is
calculated? If so could you let me know?

We are in the process of rolling change out to one of our sites and I'm
trying to 'tweak' the risk question answers so it will give the result
we
want, knowing how the risk level is actually calculated would be very
useful.

(in answer to your question, I didn't realise that it would do "3.4"
etc, so
I can't answer your question sorry)

Thanks,

ARERR 9200 when attempting to access a flashboard

2007-06-14 Thread David Seidman

Hi Listers,

BMC Remedy documentation and the knowledge base aren't helpful in
explaining the ARERR 9200 I'm seeing when a non-admin user tries to view
a flashboard.

ARERR [9200] User has no access permission to

The error guide says:
User has no access permission to .
You attempted to perform an operation (for example, opening a form) to
which you have no permissions. Check with your administrator.

So I've done the obvious of making sure the user and flashboard object
permissions align.

This is on a development server (ARS 7.0.1 running a customized ITSM
6.0), and I suspect I might have caused this when I removed some
seemingly unnecessary Public group permissions that ITSM 6 and prior
versions have throughout the app. It would seem there's something
obvious that I haven't checked, but I'm not catching it right now, so I
thought I'd run this by the list.

Thanks,
Dave

It is generally available. Any customer may request a trial license

Ron,

Upgrade the application you are using from ITSM 6 to ITSM 7 ?

This is a major change. ITSM 7 is a complete rewrite of the ITSM
application based on the ITSP (ex-Viadyne) application, not ITSM 6 (the
code base for ITSM 6 has been abandoned by BMC). It is not a simple
upgrade and there is virtually no overlap in forms/workflow between ITSM
6 and 7. Changing to ITSM 7 is like installing a completely new
application - you will need to re-train your staff, change/adapt
existing processes, perform a complicated migration of existing data to
the new application, discover which of your current customizations need
to be re-done on the new application, etc. etc.

I'm working on our upgrade to ITSM 7 (well, actually just Service Desk
7) and I'd like some advice. For past upgrades, I've done a completely
OTB install on an unlicensed 'sandbox' server just to see what's there,
and compare my customizations to the OTB and so forth. As you know, we
can't do an unlicensed install with ITSM 7, so I'm wondering how some of
you who have already dealt with this managed.

I've got a licensed development system, so I can install there, but it's
likely I'll need to do some troubleshooting of production problems
before we get the upgrade in production, so I need a dev system that's
exactly like production. I'm thinking I could do a backup of the
existing dev system database, then do a fresh install or ARS 7 and a
fresh OTB install of ITSM 7, then if I need the HD6.0 system, restore
from the 6.0 backup. This sounds like it should work, but I don't know
about binaries that may get installed for ITSM 7 which might make going
back and forth between 6 and 7 challenging.

Your thoughts?

ARSystem Passwords

2007-06-14 Thread Kevin Murray
Hi All,

Env: ARS 6.3/Mid-Tier 7.0

Clarification required on the dynamics of Remedy passwords...both user
and system set...

I believe the following statements to be TRUE since v6 onwards, if not
please can you advise of what your
understanding is:

1) From v6 onwards Remedy user passwords are now generated through a
one-way MD-5 hash function when none of the of the encryption packages
are used (including the standard package)

What form are passwords sent from say a browser using the midtier
component?

2) All other Remedy component passwords such as Application Service
Password, Database User Password, LDAP Distinguised User Password etc
are stored by the server (and Mid-tier component) using 56-bit DES
encryption which incorporates salting

Finally, what hash or encrypted form do user passwords take when
passed to say the supplied AREA plugin from the ARSystem server in
either SSL and non-SSL communication? I presume they are not
sent over the wire in clear-text in either approach, but some level of
security is incorporated, in such a manner that the LDAP server can
understand the
value passed. Any insights on this appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,
Kevin

Understanding Reconciliation jobs and IDs

2007-06-14 Thread Paul Duer

Okay guys,

I am trying to reconcile a dataset in a CMDB 1.1 on ARS 6.3. I have a
identity that works on SerialNumber only in the master set.

It doesn't work if the reconId is 0 in BMC, it creates a second asset in
BMC.ASSET with the same data. But if I copy the RecID to the BMC.ASSET
instance and run the job again, it works perfectly.

What gives? I have tried turning on Auto Identify and no go.

BMC Atrium CMDB Costs?

2007-06-14 Thread Gidd
Listers,

Got to ask, I was told recently that BMC's Atrium CMDB is being sold at US$
1.2 Mill?
Not sure I understand the model here so I'll ask:

Is this a "special" package (Telcos only, etc)??

Does this include a full ITSM suite with it?

How big does an enterprise have to be to consider such a purchase?

I wonder how many of you have successfully installed BMC's current CMDB?
If this is a true price then 5 years of support comes FREE with it, right ?

Ron,

Upgrade the application you are using from ITSM 6 to ITSM 7 ?

This is a major change. ITSM 7 is a complete rewrite of the ITSM
application based on the ITSP (ex-Viadyne) application, not ITSM 6 (the code
base for ITSM 6 has been abandoned by BMC). It is not a simple upgrade and
there is virtually no overlap in forms/workflow between ITSM 6 and 7.
Changing to ITSM 7 is like installing a completely new application - you
will need to re-train your staff, change/adapt existing processes, perform a
complicated migration of existing data to the new application, discover
which of your current customizations need to be re-done on the new
application, etc. etc.

**

I'm working on our upgrade to ITSM 7 (well, actually just Service Desk 7)
and I'd like some advice. For past upgrades, I've done a completely OTB
install on an unlicensed 'sandbox' server just to see what's there, and
compare my customizations to the OTB and so forth. As you know, we can't do
an unlicensed install with ITSM 7, so I'm wondering how some of you who have
already dealt with this managed.

I've got a licensed development system, so I can install there, but it's
likely I'll need to do some troubleshooting of production problems before we
get the upgrade in production, so I need a dev system that's exactly like
production. I'm thinking I could do a backup of the existing dev system
database, then do a fresh install or ARS 7 and a fresh OTB install of ITSM
7, then if I need the HD6.0 system, restore from the 6.0 backup. This sounds
like it should work, but I don't know about binaries that may get installed
for ITSM 7 which might make going back and forth between 6 and 7
challenging.

Your thoughts?

Right...and that would lead me to conclude that

$NULL$ = $NULL$

So before I was doing this:

That worked great. To fix the problem I had to do this:

field1 = field2 AND field2 != $NULL$

Yeah, that's what Doug suggested in an earlier post, but we did not
change anything about the underlying DB when we upgraded.

What leads me to believe that it's a Remedy thing and not a SQL thing is
that this code ran faithfully without incident for over two years in
5.1.2. Then we upgraded to 6.3 (again, we did not touch the underlying
DB), and BAM! It stops working.

this application belongs to the company proprietary info etc., Is there a
reason why init form is not working when all things seem to be the same.
Does the service need to be stopped or some other undocumented feature?

This can happen when you have a push field actions that does a push to
another form that triggers another filter that does a push back to the

This record has been updated by another user. . .

Hello everyone,

This is a new AR system still in the testing phase, so I am the only one
in the system. On the main call entry form there is a "Condition"
field, and when I change the value of that field to "Done" and save I
get:

"This record has been updated by another user since you retrieved it.
Saving your changes will overwrite the changes made by that user. Do
you want to save your changes?"

I suppressed the message by adding "Changed-By-Another-User : T" to the
config file. But there is no other user, so something else must be
wrong. We created this system by copying the database from the old
system and installing Remedy over it. Many of our problems come from
lingering references to our old server. The fact that it only happens
with a particular value points to a workflow issue. But I've run filter
and active link logs and none of the fired objects refer to the old
server.

Any suggestions on how to track this down?

Re: Setting up Linked Server

2007-06-14 Thread Opela, Gary L Contr OC-ALC/ITMA
Let me give you a tip. You might have to do some research to find the
exact settings, but your DBAs on both servers, if they are windows 2k3,
will need to enable DTC transactions or this won't work, at least not
with Microsoft SQL Server.

This has to do with remedy wrapping each query that is sent with BEGIN
TRANSACTION and END TRANSACTION tags. Windows will strip out these tags,
as they are not needed for general select commands. This, in turn,
breaks remedy.

So, make sure they enable DTC transactions, so these tags are not
removed, or remedy will not be able to query the remote database, this
includes setting up any views to any tables on that database.

Just an FYI, in case you are affected by it.

Subject: Hiding Menu Value

Hello my fellow listers,

So, here's the scenario:

I have a table-field on a display-only form which displays the records
from AR Email Messages form. This display-only form has a character menu
field and on the attribute of that is a menu that works 'On Connect' and
'On Search' and gets a value from another custom form which gets the
data from AR Mailbox Config form.

The label value for menu is all "To" email addresses. And the value of
it is MailboxID. So when a user clicks the menu on display only form,
they see email addresses but when they click the menu-item, it gets
replaced with MailboxID since the actual value is MailboxID and I don't
want users to see that value. I still want them to keep seeing
email-address after selecting an email-address from the character menu
while still being able to use mailboxID as underneath value.

Any ideas?

You can use the Run Process command of PERFORM-ACTION-SAVE-ATTACHMENT to
save an attachment to the system

Since it is already in Remedy you can copy an attchment from 1 record to
another with a simple Push (or Set Fields) action in your workflow.

2007-06-14 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
I have found that opening the form then choosing Data does not work.
Try Right-Clicking the form and choosing Form Data Only. After choosing
your destination a window opens, click on your migration and the bottom
fields become available. Choose Search for the Data Mode Put in your
search criteria and set your merge option.

I have used Migrator since v3 and while it has it's quirks, I've never
had any major problems with it.

Re: Sandbox for ITSM 7?

2007-06-14 Thread Gidd

I suppressed the message by adding "Changed-By-Another-User : T" to the

wrong. We created this system by copying the database from the old
system and installing Remedy over it. Many of our problems come from
lingering references to our old server. The fact that it only happens

server.

Any suggestions on how to track this down?

Migrator screwing things up that I have gone back to the old way of

**

Since it is already in Remedy you can copy an attchment from 1 record to

You are spot on - they dropped the escalations along with the asset tracking
and change tasking features in Help Desk 2 or 3 through 6. By itself, Service
Desk (Incident and Problem Management) in no way "replaces" the old Help Desk
application; far too many functions were completely dropped and exist
exclusively in other 7.x applications now. Some of us are trying to come up
with the $$$ for the other apps, but a lot of folks appear to be opting to
stick with Help Desk 6.0 on an ARS 7 platform because it is a more complete
application OOTB.

Hi again,

We've installed Service Desk 7.0 and we are also using the midtier. What I find
mind boggling is that escalations are not built into the Incident/Problem
management application. It appears that one would have to purchase the SLM
application to make escalations functional on the Incident/Problem application.
Does this mean we have to create customized escalations to use escalations with
the OOTB Service Desk 7 application?

Am I missing something here?

Sandbox for ITSM 7?

I don't know about binaries that may get installed for ITSM 7 which might make

Whenever you preview or run a report and include status history the
values are incorrect. I have seen on multiple forms where there is no
value in a status history selection when looking at it through the
client (Control + H) but when I create a report and include that

The defect ID is SW00267172.

This has been tested on User Tool 7.1 beta, this is also a defect for

previously is to move to a higher location so that both organizations are
available.

Why don't you use email address as the selection value from the menu and
then just run an active link that immediately does a lookup of the
corresponding MailboxID and sets a hidden field?

Any ideas?

Re: Risk Level calculation in 7

2007-06-14 Thread Ben Chernys
If you are talking integrer arithmetic then I would have been extremely
surprised if there was any rounding. Truncation is the norm. 12/5 == 14/5 == 2

I tested this with an AL on 7 and it is indeed so.

If we're dealing with reals there is also no rounding. (untested). This is
how the hardware acts. On reals you simply make your calculation different.

If you want to round on ints then you could also do a different calculation:
((($int1$ * 10) / $int2$) + 5) / 10. In this case, the results are rounded:
12/5 ==2 14/5 == 3.

Cheers
Ben Chernys

that when comparing values, if two values are $NULL$, the expression
would evaluate to FALSE. That's the way it seemed to work at least up
to v5.1.2.

For example, suppose I have form A and form B and I do a PUSH FIELDS
from A to B if field1on A is equal to field2 on B. As I recall-and I'm
pretty certain this is true-if field1 is NULL and field2 is NULL, the
PUSH FIELDS qualification fails because it evaluates to FALSE.

It seems with version 6.3 (and higher?) this type of expression now
evaluates to TRUE???

Am I crazy?

Saurabh,
there are two oppertunities at the moment on implimentation, and support.
Both implimentation and support oppertunities are on version 7, with ITSM
installed, one oppertunity is for a fresh ITSM installation, the other is to
take on more departments on the current installation (7.0.1).

Support is also becomming a growingf requirement, sorting out issues on
versions 6.0, 6.5 and 7x.
