Help setting up approval Server

2008-08-05 Thread sivarama velicheti
Hi

Can some one point me in the right direction to have the approval
server configured for remedy 7.1 implementation. I am looking for an out of
the box solution with no customizations. I have different kinds of change
requests which would be created and handled by different departments. Each
of the department has different approval process. I have the following
questions.

 i) The out of the box change mgmt workflow has 5 defined Approval
phases i) Review ii) Business approval iii) Implementation iv) Close Down
Approval v) Final Review Complete. Now if we don't need to have one of the
approval phases do we have the option to disable it using out of the box
configurations.

ii) In the approval central console in the application menu I find
the options for two sample applications and CHG: Infrastructure change. Do I
need to use the CHG: infrastructure change option because I am defining the
approval rules for the change mgmt workflow or can I build my own
application and use each one for the different departments I would be
implementing for.

iii) I am not familiar with the approval console and I am cramped
for time and so am not in a position to go over the approval server guide.
Do you guys have any simple documentation that I can go through.

Thanks
Sivarama

Yea that seems to be the odd thing out.. Permission errors usually would spit
out within a much quicker time as soon as it attempts to open the page (few
seconds).
That you say its nearly 5 minutes before it says page not found may suggest a
expired page? Is there anything in your setup that may make a web page invalid?
Settings in the mid-tier (timeouts) or the web server?

Re: upgrade error - AR server 6.00.01 to 7.1

2008-08-05 Thread Matthew Kunkel
Did you have any errors farther up in the log? They are stretching 3
core fields in the 7.1 upgrade from a 6.X database. If you have a
significant amount of data, that can cause timeouts during the alter
table. Also, depending upon the database setup and your compound
indices, those expansions may grow beyond your max index length which
also causes problems.

When you copy all your ARAdmin data, you need to copy all the data from
ALL named tables in order for the upgrade to work, you can only leave
out user created tables. There are some proprietary, undocumented
tables that Remedy uses and must be there. You should have other error
messages mentioning them if that is the case, however.

Re: Salary in Bay Area

2008-08-05 Thread Pierson, Shawn
That's strange but it makes sense that the bay area would pay less than the
rest of the country due to an overabundance of Remedy people. You can probably
get six figures as a Remedy developer with more than ten years just about
anywhere in the U.S. if you are working on ITSM, although no person with that
much experience should even be supporting a home grown system for less than
$80k/year anywhere. You can get that much at a job in Oklahoma or Ohio, which
have much lower costs of living than the bay area. It's all about supply and
demand though, so if you want to be paid well you have to live somewhere that
has very few Remedy people available, and a lot of companies making decent
money so they can pay a decent salary too.

As far as consulting, with 10 years of experience I would suggest looking at a
minimum of $125/hour. I know BMC charges twice that for their senior people,
and a lot of the major Remedy consulting firms charge similar rates. Any
consulting firm that keeps more than 15% or $15/hour from your rate (depending
on whether you are making more or less than $100/hr) is keeping too much.
When I first did consulting I was ripped off a few times because I went through
too many layers, where you have a small consulting firm taking 15%, who has a
deal with a larger consulting firm taking 15%, who then deals directly with the
client. In fact, I remember working with a guy who was being paid less than
$40/hour while the client was paying $150/hour only because he had three or
four consulting firms in the middle who each took their cut. When consulting,
always ask who the direct client is, and if they refuse to tell you or if they
tell you the name of another consulting company, don't let them submit your
information to the client.

You might price yourself out of a job!

While the SF Bay Area is an expensive place to live, often that has nothing to
do with compensation. For $120K + benefits, you would have to be a stellar
Remedy developer with solid credentials, and you would need to find an employer
with a strong need for an permanent fulltime AR System or ITSM developer. Good
luck with that. San Jose has no shortage of developers so you will have plenty
of competition. Feel free to contact me directly (off the ARSlist) if you are
interested in contacting some local headhunters.

An alternative is consulting/contracting, where rates of $50/hour - $100/hour
are possible. The equivalent of $120K salary plus 33% burden rate is
$160K/year, or $80/hour. Going through an agency will reduce your compensation
by 30-40%, so an engagement billing at $100/hour would be $60-70/hour to you.
Check the job boards (Dice, Monster, etc.) for availability.

Also, are you strictly looking at San Jose, or would you also consider
opportunities on the peninsula or in San Francisco?

If they use the LDAP password and the password in the User form is blank,
then try turning off the EA chaining mode and see if the issue persists?

We got rid of midtier login specific errors with the above settings. But
with this you need to be sure that password in user form is blank for all

Re: Data Management Application (Patch 9005) - Concepts

2008-08-05 Thread Leonard Neely - FOJ
Hi J.T.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there is a way around that if you are using
the Data Management Tool (DMT). I used Patch 9003, but I think 9005 is the
same in this regard. I my case, we had a total of 60 support users across
48 support groups to import, with slightly varying application permissions.
This required defining 34 templates to handle that.

In another case, we had 80 support users across 100 support groups, with
many unique app permission requirements to import. After doing the math on
how many people templates that would require, we decided to bring them in
with just the basics (IM, Task Users, Etc.), and then let them adjust the
specifics from with Remedy.

I'll be watching this thread to see if someone has figured out a way around
that.

Subject: Data Management Application (Patch 9005) - Concepts

All,

I'm currently working with the new ITSM Data Management suite
and have run into a conceptual issue that I thought I saw discussed on here
before but I can't seem to find the right search terms to unearth it.

The former data load process, the foundation data load, had two
spreadsheets that specified application permissions (i.e. Incident User,
Asset viewer, etc..) and support group memberships for specific users. The
new data management suite goes a different route and uses templates instead.
Thus, a given set of application permissions and group memberships are
attached to a template and that template is used to create a user.

This is all well and good when you have a "simple" environment
in which, for example, there are a limited number of application permission
combinations (i.e. everyone is going to get one of three "sets" of
permissions) and everyone belongs to a limited number of support groups.

But what if an environment is more complicated? What if, for
example, there are about 75 support users. Of these 75, about 50 could be
classified into two application permissions groups (either IM Floating or
IM/PM/CM Fixed) but the rest are all unique combinations of permissions. To
make it more complex, each user belongs to one or more groups and there are
many possible combinations.

Unless I am completely misunderstanding how this is designed
this would necessitate the creation of a separate template for each
application permission/support group combination and then a template would
have to be used to create the user with that combination.

Other than creating a few generic templates and doing the rest
by hand, assuming the above is correct, is there a more efficient manner in
which to import this information?

Thanks!

Re: BOXI users with large data quantities

2008-08-05 Thread Joe DeSouza
Page not found error usually are permission related errors if the resource
called is already installed/created on a web server. Make sure that all the
resources that are used by CR to run the reports have the appropriate
permissions for the user that starts the web server..

Subject: BOXI users with large data quantities

**
Is anyone else using BOXI or CE to print reports on the web in an environment
with large data quantities?

We have it set up and working - users can print an Incident just fine once they
get the Active X control installed.

However - this customer does about 3000 Incidents/day.  Consequently the data
adds up fast.  If we run a report like "All open incidents" or something it
just times out and goes to a 404/Page not found screen.
We've checked all the timeouts we could.  I set my workstation browser registry
"keepalive" session setting to 600,000 MS (10 min) and everything on the BOXI
server is set to 20 minutes.  The IIS settings are the same as well for
"keepalive".

Anyone have any ideas?

O 952-432-0227In the WUT the report takes 3-4 minutes to run - so I believe
adequate time is allowed.  However, the timeout screen happens after 5 minutes
(roughly) instead of the 10+ I'd expect.  Clearly something is just giving up -
but I have no idea what.

If the user moves to a different machine, are they still experiencing

If so, which I'm assuming they are, have them go to the one guy's
computer who has access through the firewall, and have them log in
explicitly to one of the MT servers, bypassing the load balancer. I
really think this might be the culprit.

I know that you were having issues in your other environment without the

William,

Are your users using the LDAP password or the passwords from the User
form?

If they use the LDAP password and the password in the User form is
blank, then try turning off the EA chaining mode and see if the issue
persists?

We got rid of midtier login specific errors with the above settings. But
with this you need to be sure that password in user form is blank for
all users and they should only use LDAP password unless your business
needs require it in user form aswell. Also "Cross reference blank
password" must be checked.

Let know.

Thanks,
Mohan

Mid-Tier and ARServer 7.1 (nopatch)

My help buttons, the default ones that are on every MT web page, are displaying
something weird. Underneath my text that I add, is a list of all objects on the

Data Management Application (Patch 9005) - Concepts

2008-08-05 Thread J.T. Shyman

Thanks!

Re: Displaying search menu's label after selecting it

2008-08-05 Thread Reiser, John J
Dan,
Are you using a search menu?
What Joe described is the way to do it with a Search menu.

Basically you can set the Value Field in the search menu to same field
for the label.
Then use an Active Link on Menu / Row Choice to find the record in the
Search menu's form and set qualification string to a zTmp_Field. Then
use EXTERNAL(zTmp_Field).

That is why I have a form for every application called XX:GenericForm
(XX being the prefix for my application) Then I use it as a search menu
source. If you set it up correctly you can even have one Search Menu
called XX:GenericMenu that you can add to multiple fields on a form. The
data stored in the XX:GenericForm handles which data goes with which
field.

Hi listers,

actually I think it should be easy...

I have a search menu with different labels than values (I wanna
use the values as an EXTERNAL qualification of a table field).
How can I get the search menu's label displayed in the selection
field after the user selected an entry from the menu? After selecting an
entry there is always the value displayed.
For example: I have a menu label ... All open tickets ... and a
menu value ... 'Status' = "open" ..., and after selecting this value
there is always the qualification displayed instead the label "All open
tickets".

Thanks for your help in advance.

2008-08-05 Thread Gary Opela (Corporate)
If the user moves to a different machine, are they still experiencing the same
issues?

If so, which I'm assuming they are, have them go to the one guy's computer who
has access through the firewall, and have them log in explicitly to one of the
MT servers, bypassing the load balancer. I really think this might be the
culprit.

I know that you were having issues in your other environment without the load
balancer, but that's just it -- it's a different environment, so I think we
should not hold it as gold that it's the same issue.

Let know.

I use Notepad++ to read any ARS log, it's free and you can create user
define syntax highlighting there.

For example, It's much easier to focus debugging a filter log by
assigning line containing these string:
"--> Failed qualification" with red color,
"Passed -- perform actions" with green color, and
"Checking" with blue color.

Okay, we just eliminated this as a possible cause. The remaining
possible known suspect is the sticky bit on the web servers.

Let know.

Thanks,
Mohan

Although this won't solve all of your requirements ... there used to be a
tool called "AR System Log Analyzer" (arwklga.exe) that a BMC rep gave me.
I don't know where to get it anymore (maybe someone on the list knows?). I
think BMC wrote it.

It compiled all of your SQL, API, Arerror, ARFilter logs into one and then
analyzed the performance for you. It even could put it into a html file for
you to be able to read it.

I don't think it would combine things like your assignment engine logs, CMDB
Logs etc. though. It might

It doesn't do it real-time though. You have to generate the logs, run a
command that compiles them all into one giant file and then run the
analyzer. It is a major chore but the results can be sometimes worth it.

Well...I was thinking if it's entirely replicatable, then if you could get
one of those users onto that workstation, you should be able to easily
eliminate the load balancers...:)

No - it is not possible due to the way our firewalling, etc, is configured.
There is no direct path to the mid-tier except from one user workstation
that is used by the Unix administrator. We're firewalled off and secured 9
ways from Sunday.

Do you have any method to bypass the load balancer for some of these users?
have them connect directly to a specific web server...that should eliminate
the load balancer fairly easily if you have that capability.

No resolution yet! :)

We are investigating the "sticky" settings on the load balancer. It was
supposed to be set - whether or not it is actually set remains a mystery.

One thing I do know though is that we experienced this problem previously in
our QA environment which does not have a load balancer - it's a single MT
server. But that was even less frequent than the occurrence here.

Does anyone know how/when/if the MT checks user licenses? I would have
thought it didn't do it at all - it seems like an API or possibly workflow
function on the AR Server but I could be wrong about that.

Can you check to see that some users do not have a duplicate record in the
user_cache table? Do a count(*) and then a count(distinct username) on
user_cache and see if it returns a different result.. If count(*) returns
more records you have potential duplicates in your user_cache table..

BOXI users with large data quantities

2008-08-05 Thread William Rentfrow
Is anyone else using BOXI or CE to print reports on the web in an
environment with large data quantities?

We have it set up and working - users can print an Incident just fine
once they get the Active X control installed.

However - this customer does about 3000 Incidents/day. Consequently the
data adds up fast. If we run a report like "All open incidents" or
something it just times out and goes to a 404/Page not found screen.

We've checked all the timeouts we could. I set my workstation browser
registry "keepalive" session setting to 600,000 MS (10 min) and
everything on the BOXI server is set to 20 minutes. The IIS settings
are the same as well for "keepalive".

In the WUT the report takes 3-4 minutes to run - so I believe adequate
time is allowed. However, the timeout screen happens after 5 minutes
(roughly) instead of the 10+ I'd expect. Clearly something is just
giving up - but I have no idea what.

Anyone have any ideas?

T. Dee. . . Ya know what? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but, you know, I
bet 99.% of the list could care less that you posted to the list rather
than sending Melissa an email. If this is the worst I have to put up with
today, then I'd say it's going to be a good day.

We all make mistakes, I don't believe you deserved what you received.

Re: "You do not have write license" woes

2008-08-05 Thread William Rentfrow
No - it is not possible due to the way our firewalling, etc, is
configured. There is no direct path to the mid-tier except from one
user workstation that is used by the Unix administrator. We're
firewalled off and secured 9 ways from Sunday.

Do you have any method to bypass the load balancer for some of these
users? have them connect directly to a specific web server...that
should eliminate the load balancer fairly easily if you have that
capability.

No resolution yet! :)

We are investigating the "sticky" settings on the load balancer. It was
supposed to be set - whether or not it is actually set remains a
mystery.

One thing I do know though is that we experienced this problem
previously in our QA environment which does not have a load balancer -
it's a single MT server. But that was even less frequent than the
occurrence here.

Does anyone know how/when/if the MT checks user licenses? I would have
thought it didn't do it at all - it seems like an API or possibly
workflow function on the AR Server but I could be wrong about that.

I think my earlier message from yahoo didn't get through..

Can you check to see that some users do not have a duplicate record in
the user_cache table? Do a count(*) and then a count(distinct username)
on user_cache and see if it returns a different result.. If count(*)
returns more records you have potential duplicates in your user_cache
table..

Re: "You do not have write license" woes

2008-08-05 Thread William Rentfrow
All users are using LDAP authentication - and all users are set to a
blank password in the CTM:People and User form.

Let know.

Thanks,
Mohan

OT - RE Job Column Technologies is Seeking Contractor for a San Antonio, TX based project- 2 + months

2008-08-05 Thread Sanford, Claire
Ya know what... I was going to bite my tongue and not respond to this...
but it is raining here (non hurricane event) and the parking lot is
empty and I had to be here at 5am!

T. Dee you replied to the list as a whole regarding a job posting,
asking if you could work remotely. Did you read the post?

"We are seeking a Senior Remedy Consultant to run ITSM 7 workshops and
do implementation onsite."

A couple of key phrases... "Run Workshops" and "Onsite" these generally
mean work at the location.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled List.

Re: Job Opportunity: Remedy Developer in Oklahoma City, OK -- Custom development

2008-08-05 Thread Gary Opela (Corporate)

We have a job posting for a remedy developer.
The candidate would be performing internal company work, as well as some
contract work.
You must be able to attain a secret security clearance. We'll take care of
that, as long as you haven't done anything that would prevent you from getting
one.

You will need to be able to develop new remedy applications from the ground up,
from beginning to end.

It's all custom development, as far as the in-house development is concerned.

Please visit http://www.lcibest.com/Showcareers.aspx?ID=1027 for details.

Email me directly if you have questions. Apply for the job through the link
listed above.

2008-08-05 Thread LJ Longwing

I think my earlier message from yahoo didn't get through..

Can you check to see that some users do not have a duplicate record in the
user_cache table? Do a count(*) and then a count(distinct username) on
user_cache and see if it returns a different result.. If count(*) returns
more records you have potential duplicates in your user_cache table..

How about User logging? At the time the user connects it tells you what
type of license is allocated...user licenses at least, not sure about app

Nothing in the error logs.

Even more frustrating - there's nothing in ANY of the logs when this happens

William,

What's your environment? I know this may sound odd, but whenever I've seen
this problem, it usually ended up being related to running out of resources
on the server (I.e. Temp space, memory, etc.). If this randomly happens
with different users, you may want to check things there. The many times,
I've seen this issue, there was usually some type of related MALLOC errors
in the log files.

Another suggestion - something you might have already crossed out but worth
a shot..

Is the user typing in the correct password? If not is the system set up to
allow guest users? If so the user must be logging in as a guest, and hence
can submit but cannot modify.. Or perhaps since you say that you are using
LDAP, the LDAP password was changed but has not yet propogated, hence is
logging in the user as a guest user even though he is typing the correct
password?

Turn on user logging and see what you get.. also turn on your LDAP logging
to verify if the user is being authenticated as he should..

Cheers

Another thing to check is your web server timeout settings (not just the
ones in the Mid-Tier Config pages, but the ones for the actual web server).
If your web server is dropping the session due to a timeout setting it might
cause this issue.

Since you said it only affects the web and not the user tool I don't believe
it is a user_cache issue.

William,
I'm going with Carey on this one. If you have a load balancer, take a look
at how it is handling the sessions. Is it using a shorter timeout than what
is configured on the mid tier? Is it storing the cookie properly?

William,

Just a WAG...

Maybe you have a web server cluster that is behind a load balancer that
is not using a Sticky session?

( Maybe the user has a valid license but is trying to "switch IP
Addresses" in a way that is confusing the ARS server?)

I would have thought
it didn't do it at all - it seems like an API or possibly workflow function on
the AR Server but I could be wrong about that.

Can you check to see that some users do not have a duplicate record in the
user_cache table? Do a count(*) and then a count(distinct username) on
user_cache and see if it returns a different result.. If count(*) returns more
records you have potential duplicates in your user_cache table..

I don't know about that, I have had offers from Co's in SF SJ and the

goes...I charge 100 plus expenses or 125 all inclusive and have been
doing that for over 10 years with steady work the whole time. I take 2
months in the summer off and from the 15th of Nov to the 5 of Jan never
had to worry about getting work or the rate.

You might price yourself out of a job!

While the SF Bay Area is an expensive place to live, often that has
nothing to do with compensation. For $120K + benefits, you would have
to be a stellar Remedy developer with solid credentials, and you would
need to find an employer with a strong need for an permanent fulltime AR
System or ITSM developer. Good luck with that. San Jose has no
shortage of developers so you will have plenty of competition. Feel
free to contact me directly (off the ARSlist) if you are interested in
contacting some local headhunters.

An alternative is consulting/contracting, where rates of $50/hour -
$100/hour are possible. The equivalent of $120K salary plus 33% burden
rate is $160K/year, or $80/hour. Going through an agency will reduce
your compensation by 30-40%, so an engagement billing at $100/hour would
be $60-70/hour to you. Check the job boards (Dice, Monster, etc.) for
availability.

Also, are you strictly looking at San Jose, or would you also consider
opportunities on the peninsula or in San Francisco?

Re: Approval Mappings

2008-08-05 Thread T. Dee
When you create your "Approval mappings" you can specify an
"Individual" or a "Group" - with the group anyone in that group can
approve the Change. As for Alternate approvers the individual that
you setup to Approve will need to setup an alternate approver in the
People Form. Note only the user can do this and they must specify an
"end date".

You may want to setup a Global Approver as well in case someone is off
sick or something.

ADM: ARSlist Awards .. Call for categories

2008-08-05 Thread Daniel Bloom
For those of you that have been on the list for at least a year, you know
what this is about.

For those of you that are new, the official explanatory note will be out in
the next week.

So, if you have an idea for a new category of award just let me know.

Let me take this opportunity to remind people of:

Our official sponsor for 2008 ARSlist Awards: Resource Management Solutions
www.rmsportal.com

[the 14th Annual Awards].

So tune up your vocal cords, and get ready to vote,

More soon.

More shortly . Dan

p.s. Attend the Awards Ceremony Live, at UserWorld in Miami

(just one of the many reasons to be there,

Well okay, not one of the reasons,

but it does fill the hour gap between

the sessions and the party)
