Re: 7.x Incident Templates

2009-02-13 Thread Steven Iocco

Like Peter said, are you opening the form via the application administration
form? If you open it from the object list by searching Incident Template you
will not see the "Groups that Use this template" list. A hidden field only
gets set from the application admin console route only. I ran into this issue
today.
Just double checking.

Auto-logon to Mid-tier without username and pwd parameter

2009-02-13 Thread Steven Pataray
I would like to create a URL using parameters to autologon to mid-tier using
the documented
http:///arsys/servlet/ViewFormServlet?form=&server=&username=&pwd=
*&eid=/arsys/servlet/ViewFormServlet?form=&server=&username=&pwd=&eid=>
* string but don't want the username and pwd parameters to be specified in
the URL string within the email notification (ref page 447 of the Basic
Guide-630)

Any suggestions on how I can accomplish this? I want to use this method so I
can create an online form that the user can access and update but don't want
the user to have to logon to Mid-Tier. The usename and password passed would
be a gereric username and password.

I was thinking maybe I can use two forms (parent/child). By specifying the
parent form in the url but when you open the parent form it pops up the
child form which the user updates.

Re: 7.x Incident Templates

2009-02-13 Thread Lammey, Peter A.
In that table field just below the Authored For Group fields is where you need
to create a list of "Groups that use this template".
Bring up the template from the Application Administration Console and then goto
to the Authored For Groups tab and click on the button "Update" to add all the
groups that can then see that template.

What I have done is create a display only field that is of "Date Time"
Then change it to Date only. Then one active link to move the selection

Re: arserver.exe Memory Usage 7.0.01 - REVISITED

2009-02-13 Thread jham36
I had a ticket opened with BMC for what I think is the same issue. I
would make a minor change to workflow or a form and it would take 20 -
45 seconds to save. This happened on Production and Development with
Dev Cache Mode on in our dev environemnt.
Support had me running around in cirlces sending log file after log
file. They ended up telling me to export all of our 16,000 + active
links in small chuncks because the problem was probably caused by a
corrupt active link. I was to see if any export took longer than the
others to narrow down the corrup AL. I started doing this and stopped
soon after. That was a ridiculous task.

Turns out that if I turned off Details view in the admin too, the
problem went away. This was shortly confirmed as a bug in the admin
tool and the fix was in QA. I do not think it made it into the last
patch 7.1 patch 6. I just checked the release notes again and it is
not listed. The defect number is listed below. It is listed as
fixed, but there is no mention of what patch it is fixed in.

ISSUE: Delay in saving workflow.

CAUSE: Details View.

RESOLUTION: Created defect #SW00314644

I hope this is helpful.

Does anyone know where I can find documentation on installing AR System

Concerning Asset 7.1:  what is the procedure for moving a new Business Process from ‘Ordered’ to ‘Deployed’?  The ‘change’ view for most hardware items includes a status pulldown menu for that change…but I do not see one for Business Process, and have not found explicit mention in the documentation (maybe not lookin in correct place!).

Asset 7.1 -- New Business Process

2009-02-13 Thread McClure, Don

Concerning Asset 7.1: what is the procedure for moving a new Business Process
from 'Ordered' to 'Deployed'? The 'change' view for most hardware items
includes a status pulldown menu for that change...but I do not see one for
Business Process, and have not found explicit mention in the documentation
(maybe not lookin in correct place!).
Yes, this has been a definite Friday.

Re: "Login SQL" where is it?

2009-02-13 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Our SMS group is currently pushing out the DLL to the machines (We
already upgraded the users to the 7.1.0 patch 004 User Tool). At the
end of the month we will change our ARS Server parameter from "Users
Prompted for Login" from Always to "By Preference" and update
everybody's preference data for "Prompt for Login" to No so the DLL will
be used.

You can do this in both the Mid-Tier and User Tool with a little bit of
work.

For Mid-Tier you can add a simple onChange="javascript:this.value =
this.value.toLowerCase();" to the Username field in the login.jsp.

For the User Tool if you have the Active Directory SSO integration you
can change the case of the User Name inside your ARSSOInfo.dll code.

I believe this should be configurable; not everyone agrees that it
should be case sensitive, and rather than forcing one mind-set, a
configurable option, based on the customers requirements, would be
better. This has dogged some of our customers for years, and caused
user inconvenience. Customer has to adapt or suffer to abide by
application mandates. I've done this before in custom development
(non-Remedy), where back end processing manipulates case [LOWER(user
input) = LOWER(db)] validation to shield user from this, where case
sensitivity is relevant.

The requirement to have unique Login ID's already exists in every
practical situation I've come across, enforcing this regardless of case
(Demo = demo). This is a functional "limitation" rather than a
technical one of Demo != demo.

If you should disagree with this, or your requirement is different, the
option to enforce case would be available, so no harm, no foul.

Just my two cents worth.

Attachments and Webservices

2009-02-13 Thread ccrashh
I have a webservice that only has one operation (Create). There is an
attachment field on the form I want to populate. I can easily create
the webservice, but can find no sample code (vb.net) to test consuming
the ws. The attachment field is looking for the following values:

attachmentName (string)
attachmentData (base64Binary)
attachmentOrigSize (integer)

Has anyone had any luck publishing a webservice that takes an
attachment? Do you have some vb.net snippet I can use to test it?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Possibly spam: Re: finding a good spam killer for remedy

2009-02-13 Thread Carey Matthew Black
We actually adopted this "human centric" model long before the Email
Engine existed and it has worked well for us so far. (for the last
8-10 years)

We pump email into an AR System form, but not directly into the
incident form. This allows for the following to happen:

1) Spam does not clutter the incident form (and later incident statistics)
2) Users can filter down the content before it is re-added to existing
incidents.
Like users signatures (that really should be a separate attachment
due to their size)
Like content that was sent to the requester from the Service Desk
that is already in the incident
etc...
3) Support staff can decided when an "update to an existing incident"
really indicates a new incident.
Often one question/problem leads to another. However, for the
later metrics to have a shot at being correct someone (a person) needs
to spin off the "new requests" from the "old request".
4) We also do things to try to help identify the sender of the email,
and also do some "auto processing" on some of the inbound emails too.
(Things like triggering outbound notifications when the sky is
falling, etc..)

Those features really do not have a place in the incident form as they
are not generic incident management tools. Rather they are "email
centric" and are kept separate so that they can be focused and
compliment and contribute to the incident management process.

FWIW: We also use procmail on the email's way into the Email Engine.
:) I find it refreshing to see independent confirmation that our model
makes sense to at least someone in the greater universe. :)

We actually are not currently using spamassassin in our model, but
maybe we could see some benefit from that too. We actually have a
fairly good spam filter already in front of all incoming emails to our
company. But maybe having a local spam hook could simplify some of our
procmail rules and maybe even "sort" the spam to the side too
hum That is something to think about. Thanks for the idea. :)

All,
I was able to update the table query in question. Here
is what I did:

1. Downgraded my Admin tool to 7.1 patch 3 (thanks
Conny). This allows creation of qualification strings up to 4k (4096
chars).

2. Since the OOB qual was already at 4081 chars, I
could barely add the EXTERNAL() before running out of room. So I took
the OOB qual and removed a pile of the superfluous spaces that the Admin
tool adds to the qual, such as those around the "=", etc. This got the
OOB qual down to 3727 chars.

3. Because I'm adding a half-dozen custom fields to the
qual, the addition would still put it over the 4k limit, so I added
another "AND EXTERNAL(custom_do_field)" and loaded my addition on Window
Open. (thanks Scott and others).

The real trick was to remove the extra spaces to make
room. It is important to save a copy of the "compressed" qual for later
because if you ever modify the table field, like to add a column, the
Admin tool will barf again because it will have expanded the qual with
the extra spaces again so that it exceeds the 4k limit. Saving a copy
avoids having to remove all the spaces again.

Thanks again,
Chuck Baldi

Re: "Login SQL" where is it?

2009-02-13 Thread Grooms, Frederick W

No, you cannot change this SQL. ARS is case-sensitive for
authentication - Demo != demo. This is not configurable.

Hi Mark,

that's not a good news,

is there a way to replace the SQL? I need to make the login for users
case insensitive (my Oracle is case insensitive on session level)
so i will like to change the ... FROM user_cache WHERE userName =
'qwerty to
... FROM user_cache WHERE userName = UPPER('qwerty) or LOWER('qwerty)
it works when i try this sql in PLSQL

Re: How to save huge qual string in Table / Tree Property? RESOLVED

2009-02-13 Thread Charles Baldi
All,
I was able to update the table query in question. Here is what I did:

1. Downgraded my Admin tool to 7.1 patch 3 (thanks Conny). This allows
creation of qualification strings up to 4k (4096 chars).

2. Since the OOB qual was already at 4081 chars, I could barely add the
EXTERNAL() before running out of room. So I took the OOB qual and removed a
pile of the superfluous spaces that the Admin tool adds to the qual, such as
those around the "=", etc. This got the OOB qual down to 3727 chars.

3. Because I'm adding a half-dozen custom fields to the qual, the addition
would still put it over the 4k limit, so I added another "AND
EXTERNAL(custom_do_field)" and loaded my addition on Window Open. (thanks
Scott and others).

The real trick was to remove the extra spaces to make room. It is important
to save a copy of the "compressed" qual for later because if you ever modify
the table field, like to add a column, the Admin tool will barf again
because it will have expanded the qual with the extra spaces again so that
it exceeds the 4k limit. Saving a copy avoids having to remove all the
spaces again.

Thanks again,
Chuck Baldi

Re: Tomcat Settings for ARS 7.1

2009-02-13 Thread Begosh, Kevin
I was actually told by a web server person at BMC, I will leave their
name out that said when dealing with java heap size and Tomcat for
RKM/Midtier you should not put the maximum size any higher than 1536MB
regardless of how much RAM you server might have. They said that if you
do Tomcat will not start. Has anyone ever heard of this.

Re: Possibly spam: Re: finding a good spam killer for remedy

2009-02-13 Thread Ramey, Anne
That will definitely help, but we have SpamAssassin amoung our list of
spamfighting tools and still get a fair amount of spam into Remedy. Part of
the problem is that these helpdesk addresses for email are on web pages and in
people's addressbooks and are free for the harvesting by the spambots. They
are just too public, though that is necessary. I don't think there is any
winning that particular battle without human intervention. One taxing method
could be have the publicized address not create tickets. Have a human check
that box and forward only the valid messages to the Remedy system.

What we have done, is create a set of forms and workflow within Remedy
that looks at
incoming emails (AR System Email Messages) looking at variables like,
from address (from domains), to address, subject and key words within
the body of the email and then skips or deletes records
basically a spam killer within Remedy (Granted a record is still created
in AR System Email Messages but we clean these up nightly anyway.
Of course I love to make Remedy's (UWIP) Email engine dance, being the

criterias and give them to the email engine.
Upon arrival in the Email Box, my Remedy workflow fires and creates the
necessary tickets for Helpdesk or other in-house schema that I wrote.
So my idea is to plug something like spamassassin to the procmail.
Does anybody have any experience of infos regarding this spam killer?
Or any other further hints/tips would be very welcomed.

Re: "Login SQL" where is it?

2009-02-13 Thread Mark Lev
I believe this should be configurable; not everyone agrees that it should be
case sensitive, and rather than forcing one mind-set, a configurable option,
based on the customers requirements, would be better. This has dogged some of
our customers for years, and caused user inconvenience. Customer has to adapt
or suffer to abide by application mandates. I've done this before in custom
development (non-Remedy), where back end processing manipulates case
[LOWER(user input) = LOWER(db)] validation to shield user from this, where case
sensitivity is relevant.

The requirement to have unique Login ID's already exists in every practical
situation I've come across, enforcing this regardless of case (Demo = demo).
This is a functional "limitation" rather than a technical one of Demo != demo.

If you should disagree with this, or your requirement is different, the option
to enforce case would be available, so no harm, no foul.

Just my two cents worth.

No, you cannot change this SQL. ARS is case-sensitive for authentication -
Demo != demo. This is not configurable.

Hi Mark,

that's not a good news,

is there a way to replace the SQL? I need to make the login for users
case insensitive (my Oracle is case insensitive on session level)
so i will like to change the ... FROM user_cache WHERE userName = 'qwerty to
... FROM user_cache WHERE userName = UPPER('qwerty) or LOWER('qwerty)
it works when i try this sql in PLSQL

You can create an Alias field on the User form (I think it is Field #117) and
populate it with the alternate case log in data.

Not all SQL you see in the logs is the direct result of workflow. Some of it,
logging in for example, is generated by the server code and cannot be modified.

finding a good spam killer for remedy

2009-02-13 Thread Remedy Maniac

dear all,

I have been asked to find some way of reducing the number of spams
ending in one of our schemas.
Obviously and unfortunately, the existing tools are not capable of
blocking all the spams.

The email lifecycle is quiet a bit cumbersome but I have to live with it.
Emails are sent to IMAP server. On my remeyd box, fetchmail pools them
and give them to procmailrc.
This later does first checks, formats then the emails to fit a certain
criterias and give them to the email engine.
