Creating an escalation against DLD:SYS:DataWizAction

2010-09-15 Thread Boyd, Rebecca E.
Good Morning!

I have a number of login IDs I need to modify, more than I care to do
one-by-one with the Data Wizard Console.

I found DLD:SYS:DataWizAction, imported some records into it and was
able to use the Re-run button to modify the login IDs I imported.

Now I'd like to eliminate clicking the Re-run umpteen times. I think I
should be able to create an escalation, but I'm not sure what Action(s)
to specify.

Thanks,

Objet: Change 7.3 patch???
À: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG
Date: Mardi 14 septembre 2010, 20h25

Dear all,

We are faced with a little dilemma.

We have ITSM 7.3 (Helpdesk, Problem, Asset)  all with patch 8.0

We have installed Change Management 7.3 and planning to bring it to the same
patch level as  the rest the ITSM modules.

We can install CM patch 7.0 or Patch 9.0!!

CM patch 7.0 will first put the rest of  ITSM modules  at patch 7.0 and then we
can apply patch 9.0 to all modules after that.

Patch 9.0 will be needed since we are thinking about upgrading to 7.5 later
this year. So patch 9.0 I guess is a must for 7.5.

After applying patch 7.0 (today) and to my surprise the whole application looks
as if it were out of the box. Hardly a single field, form or workflow  shows
any of the customization we did. Luckily we took a copy of the database and
back up all the binaries etc...

So what to do next?  Leave change unpatched will not make sense.

Try to patch it to a patch less than 7.0 and a patch that would not overwrites
the customization could be an option but as it states  in the release notes of
ARS 7.5, ITSM should be at patch 9.0 at least.

Keep patch 7.0, apply patch 9.0 and then import all the customization?

Any thought on this?

Many thanks in advance,

frex.

Subject: 64bit linux (lx64) api still broke with 7.6.3?

Been trying to get ARSperl working on a 64bit linux host for a while
(snapshots or CVS), but seem to still be having the various 64bit
issues, even with the latest 7.6.3 build of the ar API.

Does anyone here have any information on this?

I don't have any remedy/BMC support access as our AR server is hosted
 by
another campus in our system, but we do use the client and API.

Only information I have on the previous bug... is this still not
 corrected in 7.6.3?

   defect # SW00330613
Summary: Problems with 64 Bit AR API Libraries under Linux
   Status: Open
   Type: Product
   Product: AR System
   Target Release: Esc 7.5.0 Server
   Classification Tentatively Targeted
   Version: 7.5
Target Release Version: Future Patch Release

The symptom I have still is the can't encode arguments rpc error if
the
login port isn't specified, and glibc double free errors. If I bypass
the glibc memory checks with MALLOC_CHECK env var, it looks like it's
 still unable to connect properly.

I'd really like to get moved off of some legacy 32bit systems that are
having to be retained to run the AR api, but having to build an entire
separate 32bit perl isn't exactly a reasonable alternative.

Re: ARS 7.6 - Solaris LDOMs

2010-09-15 Thread Axton
There shouldn't be any technical reason that will stop you from doing this.
Can I ask why you are moving towards LDOM instead of zones?

The higher models, like T5440, support i/o domains, which are really cool
and have some real benefits because the machine can be partitioned at the
bus layer with a cpu crossbar, but the T5120 does not support this.

However, they did say they have tested ARS configured in a LDOM, but
couldn’t provide information on why it did not make the Compatibility

To sum this up, i.e. end this thread:

Any test to the list, other than my ADM timing and other such tests,
is essentially unwarranted. Tolerated of course, but not useful.

Over the past decade at least a few times each year someone thinks that my

Is not letting their email through.

In ALL cases this was not correct.

Either the list is down or it is up.
It servers everyone that doesn't get served off for spamming violations
(which so far hasn't been a real poster).

The following is 99% of occurances:

1) A persons email has been changed and no one told them,
E.g. a

2) An overly zealous middle system has decided that flood of 85 posts in one
day
Is an indication that it is a source of spam

3) A firewall has been put in place that blocks almost anything of use from
anywhere

4) the subject line of the post is identical to a recent one and the !...@#$!

Decides it is a duplicate

The other one percent is someone who has changed their email address and
forgotten.

ARS 7.6.03 Upgrade Problems

2010-09-15 Thread strauss
FYI, there appear to be some fundamental problems with upgrading a 32-bit ARS
7.6 installation to 64-bit on a 64-bit Windows server. The 7.6.03 installer
for ARS _appeared_ to successfully upgrade the ARS 7.6.00.006 instance to
64-bit, in place, using the existing java 1.6.0_20 32-bit JDK/JRE and the newly
added java 1.6.0_20 64-bit JDK/JRE. The problems showed up when I attempted to
upgrade Atrium Core from 7.6.00.002 to 7.6.03, and ITSM from 7.6.00.001 to
7.6.03.

This test was on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard x64 vm with 8 gb RAM and two Xeon
E5440 processors, with a clean install last May (for reference, with sample
data only) of ARS 7.6.00.004, Atrium 7.6.00.001, ITSM 7.6.00.001, SLM 7.6.00
and Patch 001, RKM 7.5.00.001, and SRM 7.6.00.001. It had subsequently been
patched to ARS Patches 5 and 6, Atrium Core Patch 2, and SRM Patch 2.

Both of the application installers hang and fail (Atrium), or complete with
warnings (ITSM), after failing to restart the AR Server services properly.
Neither application installer is able to successfully shut down the AR Service
– the service shows as stopped in the Services MMC, but the arserver.exe
remains resident in the Task Manager (along with all of its bastard children –
the 32-bit java processes that it spawns). Then the application installer is
unable to restart the service, and it hangs. The errors look like this:

FROM THE ATRIUM CORE UPGRADE

Tue Sep 14 21:41:30 2010: AR System server terminated -- fatal error
encountered (ARNOTE 21)

This happens near the beginning of the Atrium Core installer; it sits there
dead in the water until you cancel it. The only way I got it to complete was
to wait until it hung, then go in manually in Task Manager and End Process on
arserver.exe (I should have also killed all of the *32 processes, as they were
left resident), and then manually starting the BMC Remedy Action Request System
Server ITSMT01 service in the Services console. This restarted the AR server
and allowed the Atrium Core upgrade to continue.

The ITSM upgrade is of course another multi-hour process (3:40 PM to 9:40 PM),
and the restart came near the end, not the beginning, so I was no longer in the
office to deal with it manually. The installer failed to stop anything, so
after issuing errors it completed with warnings. The Remedy ARS Server was
left stopped in the mmc (all other BMC services were running), but the
arserver.exe remained resident and this morning I could still log in from a
User Tool and open the applications.

I have had a ticket open with support on the Atrium Core upgrade since last
week, and they don’t know why the installer could not control the services,
but they have concluded that my intervention allowed the upgrade to complete
properly. I was able to go on and perform the post install changes to
Normalization, and create a CI in Asset Management and see it reconciled into
the CMDB class overnight, so in theory the Atrium CMDB is working. The ITSM
upgrade _may_ have succeeded as well, but there remains a fundamental problem
with the AR Server that is baffling the application installers. I suspect that
the service was not re-registered properly in the registry as a 64-bit
processes, because the installer is having problems addressing it; the errors
in the application install logs read:

(Sep 14 2010 09:51:41.691 PM

Again, the Service is NOT running in the Services mmc, but the arserver.exe is
still alive in the Task Manager, resulting in:

Yes, 7.6.03 can work with a 64 bit jvm.
I have not tried importing a large/full def but have had the same issue
exporting a large/full def with prior versions. I plan on to trying a full def
export with 7.6.03 in the next few days. I'll report back on how it works.

Hi,

I have just compiled RRR|Chive on 64-bit linux with the 7.6.03 API. It
seems to work just fine.

I have both tried with and without specifying a TCP-port.

These are the libraries I am linking to:
LDLIBS = -lar_lx64 -lnsl -lpthread -lcurses -ldl

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

Products from RRR Scandinavia:
* RRR|License - Not enough Remedy licenses? Save money by optimizing.
* RRR|Log - Performance issues or elusive bugs? Analyze your Remedy logs.
Find these products, and many free tools and utilities, at http://rrr.se.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Is it even on the radar of
 anyone at BMC?

2010-09-15 Thread Smith, David A
Axton,

Thanks for your advice. Our system administrator mentioned that with two LDOMs
you can configure cpus/disk/memory between the two on the fly running Solaris
10 update 9, and better isolation so we can test OS patches which you really
can't do if you mix production/development on the same global zone. Also, since
we have two dedicated T5120's in different machine rooms for disaster recovery
it is easier to flash the OS image from one server to the other. Wish we had
the funding for a couple of T5440s:-)

The higher models, like T5440, support i/o domains, which are really cool and
have some real benefits because the machine can be partitioned at the bus layer

2010-09-15 Thread Neulinger, Nathan
Ugh. That is sounding like it either is a problem ONLY when linking with perl,
or something else is going on.

Thank you for checking into this, looks like I need to do some further testing.
If it's specific to linking with perl libs, may wind up not being able to
resolve the problem, but at least will know the specifics of the problem.

Re: ARS 7.6 - Solaris LDOMs

2010-09-15 Thread Axton
If you can afford it, you should use separate physical hardware for your
production and non-production infrastructure. There are still things that
you will have to deal with that LDOMs do not isolate you from, such as
firmware/PROM updates (which are usually bundled as OS patches), load
balancer configuration changes, network configuration changes that separate
physical hardware does provide. If you had separate hardware, then you
could test your patches, firmware updates, network changes, etc. without
disrupting your production operations.

It is easy to move images in zones as well; flar (flash archive) is the
method I use. I can create a new zone, cloned from an existing zone, in
less than an hour using this technique.

If you want a clean installation on the host OS, consider using jumpstart
(SUNWJet) with a custom template. This will give you an exact clone that
you can rebuild on any system/architecture (sun4u/v) by booting off the
network, and you can build them with the patches/patch level you want, what
services run, local accounts, network configuration, local configuration,
etc.

I'm always leery about sharing hardware between production and
non-production. It makes scaling hard to calculate when considering DR,
people sometimes do bad things in non-production environments, that no
matter how hard one tries to contain through virtualization, ends up
impacting production.

All the necessary steps and components are detailed in the Mid-Tier Guide.
As John pointed out, you need either a Crystal Enterprise Server or a BOXI
server to actually serve out the reports, though.

Also, 7.6.03 has native web reporting, which looks pretty good, though I'm
still looking for details on how to actually create new 'web reports' for
custom applications... I need more play time! :)

Enjoy,
