Re: Patches an upgrades without user impacts

2011-06-16 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

If we are talking about the AR Server (not the apps), I have created a
perl-script that automates patching rrrPatch.pl. There is a Windows
executable of this same script.

I tried this on both Windows, Unix and Linux for 7.0.1, 7.1.0, 7.5.0 and
7.6.04 systems.

It will just do a file-by-file replace, and before a file is exchanged, it
will create a backup. If something fails, you can reverse the patch in a
minute or two.

When upgrading systems, I usually do a new install, after which I siphon
the data using RRR|Chive.

This will let me minimize downtime to the final delta-transfer of data
(rrrChive), which usually takes less than an hour.

This also allows you to do ample testing before you decide to do the final
switch.

Another tool I use is RRR|ConfDiff, to make sure that I do not miss any of
the system settings in my current production system.

Except for RRR|Patch, you can download the tools from our web site. If you
are interested in the most current version of RRR|Patch, let me know, and
I will publish that as well, along with recent tutorials for applying
7.6.04 SP1.

 Hey everyone,

Been a lot of interesting discussions around disaster recovery and how to
fail over. I have another interesting inquiry that I am looking to see if
 anyone has some ideas on.

We have ARS 7.6.04, CMDB, and the full ITSM suite installed in a
Unix/Oracle environment. We use the multi-tendency in order to support a
large number of customers and their user base.

How does one go about updating the system with new patches, be it a minor
or major upgrade, without impacting users that are inputting and updating
 tickets?

An upgrade can potentially take hours to complete depending on the amount
of data and the patching involved. This would block user access,
preventing them from being able to log incidents for other issues
occurring in the environment and/or updating existing tickets.

We were thinking that we could break the database mirror and leave the
one side up for users to work with. On the other side, we would do our
upgrade. Once the upgrade is complete, users would be moved to the new
 environment.

At this point we have and upgraded system with original records. In the
other side, we have the old system with newer/modified records. This delta
of data would need to be moved over somehow.

How does one go about doing an upgrade without impacting users for a long
period of time? I’m sure that big companies like DELL don’t have outages
on their environments when doing upgrades. The large volume of incidents
and inquiries tickets that would occur during that time period would still
need to be logged and acted upon.

Looking to see how others have gone about resolving this.

 Thanks,

 Brent...

Re: Bulk Change of login ID

2011-06-16 Thread Michael Burton

Morning all,

Just an update on this, I've tested a login ID change using the Data Wizard
Console on our development platform, and it's a non-starter. I kicked it off on
Tuesday at around 11:00hrs, and it's still running. Thinking it might be that
our dev platform is not exactly built for performance, I also ran the same test
for a single user on our Prod system, kicking this off at 17:30hrs yesterday -
that is also still running :(

More investigation required as that doesn't seem quite right to me, as we have
no performance issues on our prod platform, in fact, when we brought it in to
service. the performance of our boxes actually caused a problem because they
were too fast - this was related to rebuilding Service Targets and associated
milestones.

Cheers

I have a new ARS 7.6.04 environment on a Win 2008 R2 virtual machine.

The Firewall rules are setup to allow TCP on Port 3060 and UDP on port 111. In
theory this allows the User tool to connect without specifying port 3060.
However something is still blocking port 111 for the portmapper.

My Windows server guy has asked me to explicity ask if other places have run
this on Windows 2008 R2 as opposed to Windows 2008 (non R2).

... so... I've just asked. Has anyone done this on Win 2008 R2?

That may be a sensible thing to do.. You do not want escalations to be
firing when that process is running. Since it’s a Remedy native wizard, you
do not have the luxury of completely shutting down the Remedy server. When I
had done this using a DB script I had that luxury..

I may also want to add, that if the wizard actually uses one or more
escalation to do some of the updates, then a more sensible thing to do is
disable the ones not needed, just before running the process, instead of
turning the escalation thread off altogether..

Or you may end up wondering why the process is not working altogether..

** Hello All,
Has anyone come up with a way to get our old friend The Object List back in
the browser for 7.6.04?
My company's user community is on the edge of mutiny without their Object list.
Thought I would run it by the experts and see if anyone had overcome this yet.

Thanks,

The only downside I see immediately is that if you defined your server in both
short and long name forms – the latter so that the Atrium Core Console will
work in both the User Tool and the web, among other things, you get a double
list. This does NOT affect the normal operation of the ITSM app (as far as we

I have implemented ITSM 7.6.4 on Win 2008 R2 VM and was able to establish

I have a new ARS 7.6.04 environment on a Win 2008 R2 virtual machine.

The Firewall rules are setup to allow TCP on Port 3060 and UDP on port 111.
In theory this allows the User tool to connect without specifying port 3060.
However something is still blocking port 111 for the portmapper.

My Windows server guy has asked me to explicity ask if other places have run
this on Windows 2008 R2 as opposed to Windows 2008 (non R2).

. so. I've just asked. Has anyone done this on Win 2008 R2?

Re: Bulk Change of login ID

What you need to do is to check the DTD:ThreadManager form. Open the form
and delete all records and restart your job again. I have seen it happened
before that for some reason this record gets stuck and it does not get
updated.

That's what we've got at the moment, but as you say, it does seem to have
done the job.

Do you get the pop-up saying that the change is still pending? It never
changes to completed? We've had a job or two hang up, but ID changes
generally take about 2-5 minutes depending how active the user is.
