I can't find Help Desk View

2011-11-14 Thread Mahmoud Mahdy
Dears,

I tried to delete a new field which added upon customer's requirements from
the form Hel Desk, but it couldn't be deleted so, I tried to delete it from
ARSystem DB from both (Help Desk View, Help Desk Table).
Unfortunately, after deleting the field I can't find Help Desk View in the
ARSchema. Please I need your advice to know why this happened.

Thanks

Hi,

Do you mean that you deleted columns and fields directly in the database?

That might be tricky to fix... I would suggest that you restore the
database, and try to do it in Dev Studio anyway.

What was the error message you got when originally trying to delete the
field?

Which version are you on?

Re: I can't find Help Desk View

2011-11-14 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

Apparently you corrupted the system by deleting the wrong things.

Possibly, you system is already corrupt, as you are unable to delete a
field in the normal way.

Corruptions can happen either by doing things directly in the database, or
by BUGs in the AR System. You can take your pick, but I have not had
problems deleting a field, unless some previous change to the form has
gone wrong.

It will NOT affect performance if you export a DEF of HPD:Help Desk only.
This is done by the clients all the time. This is a way for you to check
the consistency of the definitions of HPD:Help Desk. If you can
successfully import it into a test-system, you can then compare the
objects in the ar system database to that of your production system.

Turn on API/SQL logging when you import the form, and you may be able to
understand what is needed on the DB side.

Hate to be blunt but the root-cause is:

*YOU* are the root cause!

You deleted structure directly in the DB, and not via the Remedy API (using
a Remedy client like Dev Studio) which caused the meta-data to be
incorrect. If the meta-data is not correct, the form will not display
(among other weird behaviors).

The AR system maintains some meta-data for each object in the system. When
you deleted the column directly in the DB, you corrupted the meta-data for
that table in the system. Likely, the row-count from the FIELD table did
not agree with the NUMFIELDS column value for that table in the
ARSCHEMA table. One of the behaviors you will see when this happens is
that the affected forms (tables) will not display in the Remedy clients.

Presuming you are just starting to gain experience with ARS, the best way
to recover from your mistake is to restore the DB from backup.

When you add, alter, delete structure in DevStudio, there is more going on
in the background than a simple DROP sql statement. When you do it directly
in the DB, the only thing that happens is the column vanishes. None of the
houskeeping/recordkeeping tasks get done. If you do not know what you are
doing in the AR System, you should definitely not go monkeying around in
the DB altering structure -- unless you want to learn a hard lesson via the
burn learn method.

 Hi,

If you deleted things directly in the DB, this is most likely the
 root-cause.

When you had problems deleting a field initially, this may be the result
of an EARLIER direct sql change...

I would not bother to understand why your view vanished when you deleted
things in the DB, I would concentrate on why you could not delete the
 field in the first place.

What is the ARERR-code when you try to delete your field?

Try exporting your def-file of the form, and import it into a test/dev

It's OK. I think your point is well taken though and for any people who
are new to the list, it's important to realize that as Remedy and
especially ITSM evolves, there are additional layers of metadata being
introduced between the DB and ARS application. I remember when I was new
to ARS, there was a comment in one of the admin classes like, It's just
data in a relational DB. Of course while that is technically true, the
rest of that comment should be, ... but don't go changing stuff
directly in the DB because you'll be screwed in record time.

Try exporting your def-file of the form, and import it into a test/dev
system, to check that your def is OK.

It's OK. I think your point is well taken though and for any people who are new
to the list, it's important to realize that as Remedy and especially ITSM
evolves, there are additional layers of metadata being introduced between the
DB and ARS application. I remember when I was new to ARS, there was a comment
in one of the admin classes like, It's just data in a relational DB. Of
course while that is technically true, the rest of that comment should be, ...
but don't go changing stuff directly in the DB because you'll be screwed in
record time.

** Hate to be blunt but the root-cause is:

*YOU* are the root cause!

You deleted structure directly in the DB, and not via the Remedy API (using a
Remedy client like Dev Studio) which caused the meta-data to be incorrect. If
the meta-data is not correct, the form will not display (among other weird
behaviors).

The AR system maintains some meta-data for each object in the system. When you
deleted the column directly in the DB, you corrupted the meta-data for that
table in the system. Likely, the row-count from the FIELD table did not agree
with the NUMFIELDS column value for that table in the ARSCHEMA table. One
of the behaviors you will see when this happens is that the affected forms
(tables) will not display in the Remedy clients.

Presuming you are just starting to gain experience with ARS, the best way to
recover from your mistake is to restore the DB from backup.

When you add, alter, delete structure in DevStudio, there is more going on in
the background than a simple DROP sql statement. When you do it directly in the
DB, the only thing that happens is the column vanishes. None of the
houskeeping/recordkeeping tasks get done. If you do not know what you are doing
in the AR System, you should definitely not go monkeying around in the DB
altering structure -- unless you want to learn a hard lesson via the burn
learn method.

OR

The 2nd one the system will definitely see as concatenation not a
mathematical function.

Also, why can't Testfield be a real number also?

Hi,

The problem is that the contents go to a text field, so if you want to do
maths, you need to go via a numeric field:

Set-Fields 1: tmpreal = $Field1$ / 100.0
Set-Fiedls 2: Testfield = $tmpreal$

Or maybe you can do something like this:
Set-Fields: Testfield = ROUND($Field1$ / 100.0)

How to use an HTML template?

2011-11-14 Thread Mark Milke
Hello there,

I've read the BMC Remedy Email Engine Guide but I'm not really getting
it.

I want to send an Email and use an HTML template to do it.

The only thing that arrives in my mailbox is:

--=_Part_1933319_8646463.1321290438759--

HERE IS WHAT I TRIED:

I created a simple form and attached a filter to it. It fires when the
status changes.

I created one record. Here the field Short Description contains the
name of the Template in the AR System Email Template:

html
head
meta http-equiv=Content-Language content=en-us
meta http-equiv=Content-Type content=text/
html;charset=windows-1252
titleLighthouse/title
/head
body
pfont face=Arial Black RequestID: #$$Request-ID$$#/font/p
pfont face=Arial Black Status: #$$Status$$#/font/p
/body
/html

And the $Short Description$ variable is entered into the Content field
in the notify action.

Now, I'm really not sure what I have to put into the Text field in the
Notify action of the filter and since I have the template - why do I
have to put into this field? The template contains my content, right?

If I still have to put something into the Text field (Apparently I
can't leave this thing empty) then in what format?

Also, do I have to select any fields from the list Include fields?

Thanks
Mark

Try changing the Content Template: to just plain text (the name of your
template) instead of $Short Description$. I believe you should select
include all fields, but you don't need to supply any test in the Text:

getting NO template at all I suspect it is failing on looking up the
template in the AR System Email Templates form based on your Content

Yeah, that is normal. On the Email Message record you have there, go to
Advanced Options-- Templates and make sure you see your template named
there, and make sure it matches one of the available templates in the
dropdown menu on that field (*just in case*). Also, check the Variable
Replacement tab and check the Field Values. You should see all the
mapped variables. I suppose you could look at the errors tab too, but I
doubt there are any errors there.

Oh yeah, you *did* create the template as an html file, and attach it to
the Email Template form entry, right? Double check it is indeed
attached in the attachment pool? *grasping*

We actually create an HTML file in the AR System Email Templates form, then
refer to the html name in the Content, Header or Footer field on the Templates

We never did it the way you are doing it..

IBRSD Plug-in Error

2011-11-14 Thread Mike Ziniti
All,

I'm seeing an error when trying to create new tickets (or update existing
tickets) Cannot establish a connection to the AR System Plug-in server

I validated all the correct lines are added to the ar.cfg file on both of
our servers and that the plug-in server is running.

The strange thing is that right after initially install it worked fine but
after we restarted the services on the servers at a later time we are seeing
this error.

An ideas?

Re: How to use an HTML template?

2011-11-14 Thread Mark Milke
Yeah, that is normal.  On the Email Message record you have there, go to
Advanced Options-- Templates and make sure you see your template named
there, and make sure it matches one of the available templates in the
dropdown menu on that field (*just in case*).
Unfortunately it is. It named here and it matches.

 Also, check the Variable
Replacement tab and check the Field Values.  You should see all the
 mapped variables.
Yes, here everything looks perfect!

I suppose you could look at the errors tab too, but I
doubt there are any errors there.

This one is empty. No errors.

Oh yeah, you *did* create the template as an html file, and attach it to
the Email Template form entry, right?  Double check it is indeed
attached in the attachment pool?  *grasping*

It is, see here:
http://twitter.com/?photo_id=1#!/MarkMilke/status/136161772859179008/photo/1

I even tried to delete it, save it and add it again. It's still not
workig.

Is there any debug I can turn on to figure you what it's missing?

Thanks

It's strange, but it looks like I have to restart the Email Engine
every time a change the HTML Template. Is this because we're running a

Is this normal?

Anyway, I have one more question or problem I discovered now.

The app I'm working with is build on a Display Only form. So when the
user presses a button I do a Push (Submit) on the Display Only form to
trigger the filters, which in turn run on table field to prepare data
for the Emails.

When working without Email templates this works just fine, i.e. I can
use variables in the notification and they get filled out.

However when using HTML templates it looks like the variables are
empty... The Email Engine uses my template but there is no data in it.

It seems like the Email engine does fill out the template immediately
but later on and since this is not a regular form it cannot find the
data to fill out the template. Is this correct?

Mark,

From the email engine guide (v7.1)
*When the email engine starts, it retrieves all the entries in the AR
System Email Mailbox Configuration form and creates incoming and outgoing
mailboxes. Every 30 minutes, the email engine automatically queries the
form for changes to the form entries and updates the information. To
enable changes to form entries before the next default query time, stop and
restart the email engine.
To shorten the default time interval in the EmailDaemon.properties file,
set the polling parameter. For example, shorten the time to 5 minutes:
com.bmc.arsys.emaildaemon.AR_System_server_name.Interval = 5
For more information about this property or the EmailDaemon.properties
file, see “Performance and configuration settings” on page 198.*

As far as your 2nd issue, Filters + Table Walk + data weirdness = Phasing

Everyone,

What Chris describes here is a new discovery that is unique to IE9 where
something has changed in

the IE implementation. As part of the model that BMC uses for the AR System,
we support the

specified versions of products or later. In this case, IE9 was not available
when the current version

was released (7.6.04 was released in January 2011 and IE9 in March 2011).

The product is fully functional with IE9. However, we have discovered an
interaction issue that causes

a performance problem with IE9. We are working with both Microsoft and Adobe
on this issue to see

if can be resolved. In addition, some redesign of the approach has mostly
eliminated the problem from

the next major release (but that strategy cannot be backported to the current
release).

So, enough of the overall philosophy, let's look at this situation.

There are a number of UI features that we added in recent releases. Some of
them were not supported

on specific browsers so we had to find alternatives for supporting the
capability. Specifically, there are

three features: rounded corners, gradient colors, and vertical text. These
three capabilities could not

be supported in IE natively because the capability was not present. To allow
these capabilities, we

incorporated the use of Flash for IE. All of the other browsers – Safari,
Firefox, and even the other

used but unsupported browsers like Chrome – have the necessary support. So,
the workaround was

used only for IE environments.

Everything works fine for IE6, IE7, and IE8 but with IE9, something has changed
so that there is now a

performance cost for the workaround. This is what we are working to find out
what the issue is with

the other vendors.

Now, there are several options:

1) The performance issues is not really affecting you so do nothing

2) Use a browser other than IE

3) Use a version of IE before IE9 (for example, use IE8)

4) Use FlashPlayer 10.2 or earlier (the problem has been isolated to the
combination of IE9 using
FlashPlayer 10.3, or later unless a fix is added later)

5) Go to the System config settings and set the option that turns off the
use of Flash for these
three capabilities – you will not get rounded corners, vertical text, or
gradient colors but you will
not loose any other functionality or capability within the system. It is a
cosmetic affect

So, in summary….

This may affect you ONLY IF you

n Run IE9 as your browser

n Use FlashPlayer 10.3 or later

n Leave the system config setting to use Flash for these features turned on
(the default)

Otherwise, this issue does not have any affect on your system. And, it will
affect only users that have

this combination as their client – other users on the same system without this
combination will not

be affected.

There are several options (which may or may not be possible in your
environment) to eliminate the

problem immediately.

BMC is continuing to work with the vendors on this problem to see we can find
out why the problem

suddenly showed up with this combination of technology and to see if we can
eliminate the issue from

future releases with alternate designs or approaches.

I hope this explanation has been helpful both for this specific issue and to
show a case in action of the

or later support strategy.

We can hope; the dialog performance problems that we have been experiencing on

specifically to flash, and confirmed in my testing.
