[AsburyPark] Dog among items taken in robbery

2007-02-01 Thread Hinge
I've read about alot of robberies in my time, but stealing a guys puppy?
Jeeze...

NEPTUNE: Police are searching for four robbers who entered a Bangs Avenue home
Tuesday
afternoon and stole items, including a pit bull puppy.

The Wall Police Department's canine unit responded to the scene Tuesday
afternoon and
assisted township police with the search.

Around 12:55 p.m., the four men entered the house, Lt. Drew LaFrance said.

A man was inside the house at the time but was not harmed, LaFrance said.
Police said the
puppy was stolen from the house, but they did not disclose what else was taken.

The four robbers wore red bandannas, and one had a red hooded sweat shirt on,
while the
other three wore black hooded sweat shirts, police said. All four robbers fled
the scene on
foot.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Detective Michael Dugan at
(732) 988-8000,
ext. 413.

[AsburyPark] Hey Abbott!

A new outrage in the Abbotts
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 02/1/07
 Post Comment
Former Gov. Brendan T. Byrne once quipped that when he dies,
he would like to be buried in Hudson County so I can remain active
in politics. He should consider getting a job with either the Camden
or Newark school district. Then he could keep collecting a paycheck
long after his demise.

Audits of spending by four of the state's poorest school districts,
released Tuesday by the state Department of Education, revealed a
disturbing level of what Education Commissioner Lucille E. Davy
termed opportunities for questionable activity. Auditors found that
Camden paid more than $330,000 to employees who had been dead for
years, even decades. Newark also spent $310,000 in payroll for 28
dead employees. Who cashed the checks?

Gov. Corzine should tell Davy to turn over the findings to the U.S.
Attorney's Office. Audits for the state's other 27 Abbott districts
are planned for this spring. Why wait? Davy should send out the
auditors now, and start with Asbury Park, which has the highest per-
pupil costs among them.

Just as egregious as the wasteful spending were reactions from
officials of the audited districts. Camden said its new administrator
hasn't had enough time to study the report. Judging from the
personnel records, they should check his pulse, too. Six of the
posthumously compensated staffers had termination dates two to 32
years after they died. Thirty-two years? Can't blame that on direct
deposit.

Newark objected to auditors calling some of their expenses
questionable. This from a district that spent $1,795 on a jukebox,
shelled out $29,995 for a Jeep Grand Cherokee with leather interior
and navigation screen for the superintendent, and paid salaries to 28
dead people.

Jersey City had $558,000 in questionable spending, including $2,385
for an administrator to attend the Oxford Roundtable in England. City
officials blamed auditors for not interacting with school personnel
before issuing the criticism. Sorry, but listening to spin during an
audit doesn't make it more effective.

David Sciarra, executive director of the Education Law Center that
has fought for more funding for these districts, called for a review
of the state education department. Isn't that shooting the messenger?

Davy said each district will be asked to develop a plan to correct
deficiencies. That's not enough. New Jersey taxpayers have shoveled
billions of dollars into those districts. Administrators and
employees responsible for any dollar spent on non-educational items
should be held accountable — publicly — for their misuse of public
money.

[AsburyPark] More info on Bloods Raid

2007-02-01 Thread arhythmick

State, federal authorities round up suspected Bloods gang members By
ANGELA DELLI SANTI Associated Press Writer February 1, 2007, 12:48 PM
EST
TRENTON, N.J. -- State and federal agents rounded up 20 members of the
Bloods street gang in a series of raids Thursday that began before dawn
and spanned three New Jersey counties and Bucks County in Pennsylvania.

Authorities said gang members were arrested in Monmouth, Mercer and
Ocean counties in New Jersey and in Bristol, Pa. They are suspected
members of the Sex Money Murder set of the Bloods.

Nine weapons were seized in the raids, which ended around 9:30 a.m.

The suspects were taken to the state police complex in Hamilton
Township, Mercer County, for processing.

Warrants have been issued for five additional gang members, authorities
said.

Numerous federal, state and local police agencies were involved in the
raids, known collectively as Operation Dog Pound.

A briefing on the operation was scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the
state police's Regional Operations Intelligence Center, known as The
Rock, at the West Trenton headquarters.

Thursday's raids were similar to a gang takedown in July in which more
than 60 members of the Nine Tre Gangsters were arrested in cities across
the state, including four gang leaders who authorities said were
directing gang activities from inside state prison.

The Nine Tre's are a notoriously violent set of the Bloods street gang.

[AsburyPark] Fwd: ALERT: Super County Supt. on Monday's Agenda

2007-02-01 Thread GG518

---BeginMessage---
ALERT!

'Super' County Superintendent on Monday's Senate Agenda

On Monday, Feb. 5, the state Senate may act on a new version (S-19) of
legislation to create super executive county superintendents.

Thanks to your previous efforts, we not only held off action on this proposal,
but also successfully eliminated a provision that would have moved school board
member elections to the partisan November election.

It's time to act again.

S-19 would affect every local school district in New Jersey.

The bill would .

· Give a politically appointed state official sweeping powers over
local school district budgets.

· Eliminate savings school districts have already achieved.

· Affect school district grade organizations and boundaries.

The bill would not save property taxes

Take action now .

1. Call, e-mail and fax your state Senator as soon as possible, and urge your
Senator to vote against S-19!

To find your state Senator's contact information, consult the NJSBA Legislative
Directory or visit the NJSBA Legislative Action Center online.

2. Call Senate President Richard Codey at (609) 292-5215 to express your
opposition to S-19.

Remember .

· S-19 will not reduce property taxes. It will hurt our children's
education.

Thank you for taking action!

Sincerely,

Edwina M. Lee

Executive Director

I'm sorry, but I'm struggling to understand why greater state
oversight would be bad... It's clearly not working today? Can
things get much worse than the disfunction we've seen here - and
apparently also in so many other Abbott districts given the other
post today?

I don't know anything about this proposal other than what you posted
below. Can you please shed some light on why you are opposed to
this? And if not this, what?

4 P.M. UPDATE: 17 arrested in Bloods gang sweep
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 02/1/07
BY MICHELLE SAHN

WEST TRENTON — State, federal and local law enforcement officials
arrested 17 adults in a new offensive against the Bloods street gang
today.

Operation Dawg Pound targeted the gang's presence in central New
Jersey - predominantly in Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties.
Charges included conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering,
distribution of CDS, and transfer of weapons.

Among those arrested were Zachery Butts of Freehold Borough, who had
been previously arrested by Lakewood police in December. A handgun
owned by Butts was seized and traced to the murder of Keith T. Mason
in Long Branch. Butts was out on bail when he was arrested this
morning. Charges against Butts includes transfer of weapons.

Evidence seized in this morning's action supported the murder
charges previously filed against Valdo Thompson Jr. of Jackson and
Carl Holdren of Lakewood for their role in November 2006 slaying of
Michael Montgomery in Long Branch.

Also arrested this morning were Wesley Kelly of Ocean Grove and
Michael Gunther of Howell, both on drug charges. Two juveniles from
Ocean County were also taken into custody on drug charges.

The arrests were announced by Attorney General Stuart Rabner, State
Police Superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes, and Criminal Justice
Director Gregory Paw and Gerard P. McAleer, U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration Special Agent in Charge took place in the newly
opened Regional Operations Intelligence Center (ROIC) at State
Police headquarters.

Today's operation reflects a new, aggressive law enforcement model
that we're using to take down the most violent street gangs,'' said
Rabner. It's a model that starts with effective intelligence
gathering by the State Police and other agencies, and brings in
state prosecutors at the outset, to ensure that we dismantle the
hierarchy of these gangs with solid cases. We will continue to work
with our many law enforcement partners to target gangs terrorizing
our communities.''

No hard feelings Jack.

The subject line Egg on my face should have tipped you off that I

Here I am rambling on this board all time about Bloods in AP and it
turns out there is one under my nose in Howell.

I think I even posted once on this board that there are no Bloods

Pretty certain Devlin from Wall is a Dem for Assembly.

They are pretty hush on all else.

I'll never understand the method of Democrats. Keeping your
candidates secret is supposed to be a good idea in your book? Name
recognition is what you need. Earlier the better.

I guess that's why Republican control this area.

Better dump Scudiery, Dems.

COME ON BRIM! WHO is RUNNING?

School and town officials accused of stealing $110,000
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 02/1/07
ASSOCIATED PRESS

HACKENSACK — The Cliffside Park school superintendent, municipal
clerk and deputy clerk were charged today with stealing more than
$110,000 in school funds since 2000.

Invoices for the payments were basically nonexistent, vouchers were
improperly paid and the payments were not approved by the town school
board, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Numerous steps were taken to bypass normal the approval process,
Molinelli said. The investigation is continuing, he said.

Superintendent Robert Paladino, clerk Brian McGuirt and deputy clerk
Carol Lynn Palma were charged with official misconduct, conspiracy
and theft. Paladino has already been suspended, the prosecutor said.

Messages left shortly after 5 p.m. today for lawyers for the accused
were not immediately returned
