[AsburyPark] Open Space v Urban Development

2007-02-24 Thread justifiedright
When I was seeking the Freeholder nod from the GOP last year, one of
the planks on my platform was pointing out how open space
conservation is getting all the political attention while Urban
planning is not.

Even Republicans are acting like narrow-minded treehuggers when it
comes to preserving open space (Judith Stanley Coleman is one of the
more influential GOP'ers in the State).

This lady in the Press today from Bay Head agrees with me.
My army slowly grows.

Building density all state's fault

Monmouth County Conservation Foundation President Judith Stanley
Coleman complained developers touting mixed-use traditional
neighborhood development are guilty of bad planning practices.
(High-density development just another term for urban sprawl, Feb.
14.)

But the developers didn't invent this concept; the state Development
and Redevelopment Plan did.

The plan created by the New Jersey Planning Commission and
administered by the state Office of Smart Growth touts mixed-use
residential and commercial development in urban areas as the only
way New Jersey should grow. What Coleman calls idyllic, but
nonsensical is nothing more than how the state plan portrays the
ideal 21st century development.

She points out statewide mass transit doesn't exist here, which must
have been known when the state plan was written.

Coleman should check out New Jersey Future's smart growth and
sustainable development Web site. She has mistakenly blamed the
developers for the urban density vision spelled out in the state
plan.

Since so much of the state is prohibited from development (Highlands
and Pinelands, close to 2 million acres), growth can go only where
it is allowed.

Developers are not the salesmen for high-density development, as
Coleman says. It is our own state government that can rightly claim
that title. Urban density, meet thine own sworn blood enemy, the
conservationist.

Nothing in my post here calls for JK to be a pariah. In fact, not
one word of it makes a value judgment at all about him or his
positions.

Werner made a judgment about SUFA though. He said it
was misinformation to assert JK is for the Mission, and seems to
indicate that JK has not come out for or against.

Why is it a problem if I point out that at Holy Spirit JK certainly
did come out for the Mission?

I can understand the need some have to defend JK, but I honestly
didn't say anything for or against the guy - I just corrected Werner
on JK's stance.

Some people are getting a bit sensitive about JK.

I like the fella and his wife. Great people. I do have genuine
disagreements with their political views, but please don't think if
I post about him I'm attacking the guy.

He's good people in my book; just not so in my much lesser important
book on politics.

[AsburyPark] MM - Done Deal?

2007-02-24 Thread dfsavgny
I am not trying to be a party pooper, but something strikes me as
strange. The day of the council meeting, sources indicated that the
deal between Partners and MM was still not signed. At the meeting Gary
Mottola said it was signed two days earlier. Subsequently I rechecked
and sources indicate that it was apparently kept very close to the vest.

Then I noticed the story in APP indicated that the deal was subject to
investor review. I am uncertain whether that means in MM or Partners.
It was obviously something that was said to reporters in the hall and
not at the meeting. I posted that excerpt here.

Today I again checked the MM website for an announcement of the deal.
Still nothing. I would think that there would be something since there
was last year well before a deal was even sketched out. Hopefully my
suspicions will be misplaced.

Tom, look at my post. I never said you did anything. In fact, while I
responded to your post I clearly said it was Paul's post, on behalf
of SUFA, that I considered to be the germinating factor. Your post,
which you have accurately explained, does not make him a pariah. But,
is another in a series, started by Paul, followed by Allan, and of
course by mine (which in essence probably exacerbated what I was
complaining about), then Werner's and yours. All of which
cumulatively took us off the issues. It is not JK that brought the
Mission here, nor is it any of his support of/reluctance to oppose,
or attendance at any zoning board or other meetings that will affect
the Mission's existence here. All of that is quite frankly
irrelevant, and Paul, on behalf of SUFA, should realize that.

SUFA should not demonize ANYONE. SUFA is not about ANYONE. It is
about the appropriateness of the Mission in AP. That's it.

You're right. I see that you were responding to Paul.

While we are on that subject then, I don't think JK's view on the
matter is irrelevant.

I'm irrelevant. He's a sitting council person. There's a
difference from when I talk and when he talks.

His carries different weight.

We've been down this road before. He isn't just an advocate
anymore. He is a community leader. His words even when not on the
dais have an effect.

If he is going to ne neutral on the Mission he can't then continue
to speak up for it and defend it.

[AsburyPark] Re: Last Night's Zoning Board Hearing

2007-02-24 Thread asburycouple
Tom, in this case I think he has every right to support it without
becoming the issue. Are you saying that just because he's on the
council he doesn't get to have an opinion on this - or that it can't
be different from your own?

I am totally against the mission. I strongly disagree with Jim on
this one. But being on the council does not eliminate his right to
have an opinion, just as the others are not supportive of the mission
and have their own right to express their opinion. I don't agree
with Jim but respect him for not being afraid to take a visible stand
for what he believes in the face of so much opposition. This isn't
going to earn him votes, and he knows it. Yet he is willing to stand
on conviction. Whether you agree or not, give some credit for
standing on principles. I know someone else on this board who often
takes an unpopular stand (ie., you). I also disagree with you much
of the time but do appreciate the same quality in you.

How can you, or I, or pretty much everyone here, who hasn't studied it at
length say that
raising concerns about something like vinyl is ridiculous?
Are you an expert about this topic? Do you know anything more then I do?
I doubt it.
You know what makes me sick about our culture?
Everybody thinks they are an expert about everything because they read the
headlines.
They get 15 seconds of info, and then think they are informed enough to have an
opinion.
So you think JK is wrong for trying to raise concern about something, and
somehow you
think you know enough about vinyl to call him ridiculous.
Sad indeed.

Et tu, Asbury Couple? Et tu?

Why do people keep laying things on me today that aren't mine?

I said nothing, good or bad about JK and his position on the
Mission, and I did not say he himself is an issue.

WERNER posted saying that it is misinformation to assert JK has a
position on the mission.

I did nothing more than refer to WERNER to the Holy Spirit tape,
where Jim did have a position.

That's it. Period. All I said.

From that I'm being associated with calling him pariah and making
him an issue.

Was not Werner making him an issue for daring to speak his name?

Like I said. Some folks are a bit too sensitive when it comes to
him.

I'm certain I did not attack him or make him an issue by simply
pointing WERNER to a tape.

[AsburyPark] Re: Vinyl Siding in AP

2007-02-24 Thread Hinge
See, there you go again Tommy, you've found yet another subtle way to somehow
put JK
down.
If you read JKs original post, and followed the links in his post, you'd
realize that he has
spent some time studying the issue of vinyl, so that does give him an informed
opinion.
I truely believe that people need to be more informed when discussing the more
difficult
and complicated issues in our world.
Take global warming for example. I have been reading about it, and studying it
for approx.
15 years. Do I know what i'm talking about? Probably not, because I'll admit
that I don't
really understand all the science, but at least I've been paying attention and
reading as
much as I can about the topic. Along the way, i've encountered many people on
both sides
of the issue, and what will always amaze me is how people will garner what they
can from
the headlines, from the crawls at the bottom of the screen on news programs,
from the 1
to 2 paragraph discussion of the issue on the internet, and next thing you
know, they
think they have a qualified opinion. Next, they start using the rhetoric of the
topic, and
you'll have people who have no idea at all what they are talking about using
terms like
funded by tree huggers and it's nature, not mankind and on and on...but the
cumulative amount of their knowlege on the subject could fill a greeting card.
Am I wrong about that? Do we not live in a culture filled with armchair experts
about
everything? I think we do. I think TV and the Internet has shortened peoples
attention
spans, and caused many many people to just skim the surface of life, rather
then really
figure out what's going on.

[AsburyPark] Nelson and Jeanette!

2007-02-24 Thread asburycheech
Hi Group Members,
If there are any fans of really old (and I mean REALLY old)
movies---at 4 PM Sunday at the Stephen Crane House, 508 Fourth Ave.)
we're screening the 1938 MGM Technicolor film Sweethearts with
Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. It's not available yet on DVD,
but I have a passable VHS copy. It's fun because it was co-scripted
by Dorothy Parker, who turned a nicely corny Victor Herbert operetta
from 1911 into a semi-screwball 1938 vintage comedy. One of only two
of the great duets' films to be photographed in Technicolor (for
which it won an Oscar--yes, tomorrow is Oscar night), it costars two
folks who would team up the following year in a film near and dear to
all our hearts: Frank Morgan (the Wizard himself) and Ray Bolger (who
wanted so much to have a brain). Hopefully the weather will hold
out, and after coffee, tea, etc., we'll be home in time for Ellen!
Sunday also just happens to be the Great Caruso's 134th birthday, so
we'll have some birthday cake, too. Alas, poor Enrico entered the
heavenly choir seven years before there were any Academy Awards
(although, believe it or not, he made a couple of silent--what was
the point of that? short subjects)! Anyone interested is more than
welcome.

If you read JKs original post, and followed the links in his post,

an informed opinion.
I truely believe that people need to be more informed when
discussing the more difficult
and complicated issues in our world.
Take global warming for example. I have been reading about it, and
studying it for approx.
15 years. Do I know what i'm talking about? Probably not, because
I'll admit that I don't
really understand all the science, but at least I've been paying
attention and reading as
much as I can about the topic. Along the way, i've encountered
many people on both sides
of the issue, and what will always amaze me is how people will
garner what they can from
the headlines, from the crawls at the bottom of the screen on news
programs, from the 1
to 2 paragraph discussion of the issue on the internet, and next
thing you know, they
think they have a qualified opinion. Next, they start using the
rhetoric of the topic, and
you'll have people who have no idea at all what they are talking
about using terms like
funded by tree huggers and it's nature, not mankind and on and
on...but the
cumulative amount of their knowlege on the subject could fill a
greeting card.
Am I wrong about that? Do we not live in a culture filled with
armchair experts about
everything? I think we do. I think TV and the Internet has
shortened peoples attention
spans, and caused many many people to just skim the surface of
life, rather then really
 figure out what's going on.

Jack has a new rule everyone. Only experts on a topic may have
an
opinion on this board. You must show your expert credentials
to
  have an opinion.

Jack will strictly enforce this rule.

In other news, JK is now an expert on matters of earth sciences,
  biology and geology.

If he asserts an opinion in these matters, it's OK.

Anyone else who has an opinion must not express it, for failing
to
  have expert credentials.

  Good grief.

[AsburyPark] Re: Vinyl Siding in AP

2007-02-24 Thread Hinge
Because of the sad way that you chose to ridicule JK after he merely tried to
give us
something to think about. You made a joke of his attempt to make people think
about
something, and consider the alternatives.
If you studied the issue he made reference to, you probably wouldn't made a
joke of it. But
you did, because you like to attack his politics and position in AP whenever
you get a
chance. JK wasn't being political. He was presenting food for thought about a
simple thing
that most of us never think about.
If i'm wrong, I apologize.
Jack

 Jack,

If I may inquire, what would lead you to the conclusion that I have
 not studied the issue?

[AsburyPark] Marble History

2007-02-24 Thread justifiedright
Found this on a 1955 newsreel description:

MARBLE CHAMPS knuckle down in the finals for the national crown at
Asbury Park, N.J. 10-year old Dick Hickman, brother of last year's
champ, is edged out by 12-year old Raymond Jones of Pittsburgh in a
tense climax.
