Well, there are many musicians living there, but the area has
long bene a haven forcounter-culture and artistic types going all the way
backbefore Arlo Guthrie's"Alice's Restaurant" in the 60's. It's not just a
place where Woodstock happened. Lots of famous recording studios are there,
along with many great venues and other interesting culture.

2006-10-25 Thread samlorac

That'swonderful, but only if it actually happens. It makes me mad
that it's been an issue at all in the first place. My husband and I married at a
courthouse, not a church, because we are not religious people and did not find
it necessary to involve the church in our marriage. Why Gays and Lesbians can't
have the same option at the very least is beyond me. They should be able to
marry at a courthouse. Then, if there is a church that will also perform a
religious ceremony, they would do so based upon what their personal beliefs
are.In other words, the state must allow you, but the church can choose.
Thisshould bethe way to make all people happy, but the line has be
unmercifully and purposely blurred between church and state. It's unfair and it
should be unconstitutional.

The Episcopals are very Liberal. In addition to allowing openly Gay priests
for some time now ( a friend of mine was a Gay priest in Lansford, PA in the

Iraq did nothing to us. There were no weapons of mass dist ruction. Even
the Bush administration says that thereis no connection between Iraq and
9/11, although they tried to blur the linein 2003 in order to bang the
drums of war. It is all aboutpeak oil, and Iraq is sitting on 60% of
what's left of the world's oil, and as long as we are there permanently, we can
control that. There were no Al Qaeda in Iraq, but now there are, our
invasion was a great recruitment tool for terror, and the hatred towards
Americans has only been made greater by our continuous presence in a place where
we are not wanted. There are more troops dying every day, while the situation
only gets worse and worse.

I am not a Democrat, or a Republican. I believe in thinking for myself, and
not letting the confining parameters and senseless loyalties of one party
dictate my beliefs and my sense of right and wrong. It is hard for me to think
that a person of God could support such a brutal war based on what we know now
was a lie. Whatever happened to Jesus, and the lessons hedied teaching?
Have we not learned one damned thing from our brutal history?

Supporting our troops means bringing them home.

Re: [AsburyPark] Keady Resignation Demand

Dear Mr. Justified Right,

You'd have to shoot Bush along with all his cronies if you want to do the
job right. I'd do it if I could get away with it. He's ruining the world, and my
son is going to grow up under the pall of his "New World Order." My son's
grandchildren will be paying for Bush's debts, that is if they even
have a future. Certainly they will never know innocence.

"Justified Right" is a sickening Web site. So insulting to anyone who has a
shred of human decency and intellect. I am neither Democrat nor Republican. In
my opinion, they all eat from the same trough, and leave what's fallen to the
ground for the rest of us as our only sustenance. They have all voted for
this expensive, grossly unjustified war, and for The Patriot Acts I
IIwhich are eating away atour Constitution, trading people's
freedoms for their safety so that they have neither.

Wake Up! You can't afford to think the way you do. This great rift has been
created between the Left and the Right in order to prevent us from moving
forward. You arevoting against your own best interests if you think that
the Bush regime gives a sh*t about you in the first place. Education is worse,
the economy is worse, and we have turned into an Imperialistic, isolationist
country. Our media is owned by the same 5 multi-billion dollar corporations who
love Bush's tax breaks, so you're lucky if you can even hear the truth anymore.
But it is out there if you open your eyes, and stop talking the talk just for
the sake of taking sides. Can't you see what these people are doing? If you are
not in the top 2% receiving generous tax cuts, are you really better off than
you were6 years ago? And don't 9/11 me. (I believe it was an inside job,
anyway. You can see a very factual account of the building collapses at
9/11
Mysteries (Full Length, High Quality) - Google Video ) Even if we don't
agree about it, hey, it's(supposed to be) afree country, but why did
the White house lie about the air quality in NYC just to reopen Wall Street at
the sacrifice of its citizens? People are sick now, first responders and many
others who were told it was safe, and now they cannot pay for heath care. Look
at New Orleans and it forgotten inhabitants. Look at the mess in Iraq. I don't
know a single person who is doing better than they were before Bush.

What about the hatred of Gays and Lesbians? Immigrants? Anyone who has an
individual opinion that is not shared by the Bush administration? The blurring
of the line between church and state? The purging of 95.000 voters in Florida,
most of whom were Black, in 2000? The new bankruptcy laws? How come the Army
Corps of Engineers cannot be sued even if they did not build the levees to the
correct specifications? There are no good things being done by this
Administration to help the American people as a whole, and this country is
sinking in deep, deep debt.
"
The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the
first and only legitimate object of good government." Thomas
Jefferson

something shady and tantamount to an ED situation. I'll post it when I find out.
That's if someone doesn't do it first.

I liked that place, and have very fond memories from the early to
mid-eighties. I am just moving back to the area, and was really pissed that I
missed their closing. I missed it by only a couple of days. I was there last in

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: the baronet

2006-08-31 Thread samlorac

I found this online:

How to Remove Musty Basement Smell

A musty basement isn't something you have to live with - though many people
do! Start with the easier solutions first; you may have only a minor problem.
Move on to the more complex solutions as your situation warrants.

Steps:1. Ventilate. Too much moisture is the cause of
musty basements, and a couple of open windows at opposite ends of the area may
provide adequate cross-ventilation to air out the smell. 2.
Get rid of any mildewy carpet padding, and deep-clean your carpets. Set
furniture outside in the sun to air out. 3. Mop or wash down
concrete floors and walls with a solution of bleach and water (about 3/4 cup
chlorine bleach to 1 gal. of water. Let the solution sit on the concrete
surfaces for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry. 4. Check the
drainage around your house. Porous basement walls may transmit moisture from the
ground outside during rainy spells, and the trapped moisture increases the
humidity in your basement. Make sure the ground slopes away from foundation
walls, and that downspouts extend 6 feet or more from the house.
5. Waterproof the basement. Look for cracks in the walls and
floor and seal them with hydraulic cement. Apply concrete waterproofing sealer
where the floor meets the wall. 6. Buy and install a
dehumidifier as a last resort to remove excess moisture.
Tips:Use fans to aid ventilation. Place one in the center of
the area to circulate air and one at an open window to serve as an exhaust.
Warnings:Open windows when cleaning with bleach -
fumes are harmful!Tips from eHow Users:Removing mold or mildew
odors by Lynda MesserI found that if you put a 1/2 cup to 1 cup of white
vinegar in 2 opposite corners of your room (on the floor, maybe under a table or
behind a piece of furniture where it is not noticeable)it will take the odor out
within 24 hours. Do this once a week or as needed due to evaporation. I live in
a tri-level colonial and my family room is on the bottom floor. I have no
basement under my family room...It's just wall to wall carpeting. Under that,
there's concrete and under that, there's SOIL! The only time my family room is
not damp or "mildewy" is in the winter when I use my
fireplace.

I bought a house in Asbury, just so myson could get to know the
place. There is nothing like snow along the ocean in the wintertime.

You could say that NYC isn't a safe place either, but you just have
to know where not to go. There are very few places left in the world
that are as safe as they were 30 years ago. When I was young, I could pretty
much go anywhere at all hours of the night, even hitchhike across country, and I
was a girl. Those days are gone everywhere. From what I hear,
hitchhiking even in Europe isn't as safe as it used to be.

I love Asbury, and it is a great place to bring kids, and I suspect it will
always be.

Re: [AsburyPark] Bike Paths Dead Horses

2006-07-12 Thread samlorac

Hey, no need to call me nuts. I can't ride because I have arthritis, but I
can understand the joy of riding, as I am married toa German,
andlived there for a while, and was able to ride back then and it was
great. I did all my shopping, everything, and went everywhere this way.I
never even thought about having a car.

I am just saying that it would be great if cities planned things so that
people would not always have to use cars, so that modes of transportation such
as walking and biking can be real ways to get places.

My parents moved to Palm Harbor, FL in the mid-eighties, and since then I
have seen them build the Pinellas Trail which allows people to walk or cycle
from town to town without having to mingle with cars. Some people actually go to
work this way, and that's a good thing for traffic, not to mentionpeople's
health.

If bicycles could be used for transportation, not just leisure, it would be
a good thing all around, and if you could not or did not want to buy a car, you
could still have a life. Public transportation has never been a strong point in
this country unless you live in a major city like NYC, and even then, if it's
like LA where I lived for a few years, you are very limited.

The widening of roads costs taxpayers money each year, as does
therising cost of healthcare becauseof preventableillnesses
caused by the sedentary lifestyle of most Americans. I'd gladly pay for the
encouragement and the abilityof people to be more independently mobile,
less polluting, and more healthy for it.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Bikes on the Boardwalk

2006-07-10 Thread samlorac

I'm looking at all this from afar, and I can understand how sometimes rules
have to be made in order to prevent the potentialabuse of a situation by
even one person. Life is full of rules like that, and it harkens back to what is
so often said by teachers in school--"It's a shame that one ofyou has to
spoil it for all the rest."

If Asbury really does become a busy place, I can see where at one point
people (both tourists and residents of all of the proposed condos) fighting for
right of way on the boardwalk, and enforcing things now seems to me to be a wise
decision. Why can't they make some kind of bicycle lane, similar to the
Pinellas trail in Florida, or the bicycle lanes in Germany? I have lived in all
three places, andthis seems to me like a reasonablealternative to a
total ban.

Had a wacky computer moment...how about a trail that runs from town to town
along the ocean. I used to walk from Asbury to Belmar. A bicycle trail would be
great, where you could actually go places.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Bikes on the Boardwalk

2006-07-10 Thread samlorac

I would never use a bike lane that shares the street with cars in this
country. Drivers are just not aware of bikes the way that they are in Europe. In
Italy, everyone shares the street, but of course, there are mostly scooters
there, and few bikes. Drivers are accustomed too being aware of everything while
they drive. In Germany, there is a specially colored part of the
sidewalkfor bikes, so they do not mingle with cars for the most
part. And cyclists have to obey all of the traffic signals, and keep their
bikes up to code with headlights and reflectors.

In Pinellas County, FL, there is a trail that spans several towns, and you
can actually travel to places without a car. It is open to both pedestrians and
bikes. It even goes through woods and over highways!

I just think that a trail along the shore would be really cool. Much the
same it would allow people to go from town to town without mingling with cars
which isdeadly and who needs the carbon
monoxide?

All of this stuff can only be great for the city. How can you be so
sarcastic? Let me know if I have misunderstood.

As a long time former resident of Asbury, and a soon to be future
home owner and part time resident, I am happy to see the changes that
were waited for but never happened 20 years ago. I am inspired so
much so from my recent visit, that I quickly began to search for a
home so I can visit as often as I can. I want my 4-year-old son to
know this place. I live in FL and care for elderly relatives here in
my home, otherwise I would move full time.

It's good to see that butterfly finally emerge from a rather long and
painful metamorphasis.
