Two factors played in that, founder James Bradley and the recognition that visitors were attracted to the newest innovations. Being a progressive resort, many technologies were taken advantage of such as sanitary sewers, centralized gas and water distribution, along with electric lighting. Keep in mind that the lighting of that day was nothing like what is available today A typical bulb put out far less light than those of today.. dim by comparison, and of a different color. Oak is that really an ad for AP from 1903? The lights were Brilliantly Illuminated until dawn? That should settle the arguement taking place on this board over beach front lighting. I smell complete vindication. They new back then that visitors wanted a brilliantly lit place at night so they would feel safe (not to mention awake to stay out longer). It's just plain common sense. There is no contrary view grounded in the reality of tourism. Even when I was there Sunday night, when we walked onto the boardwalk looking for the Watermark Door (didn't know it was on Ocean Ave) I could sense right away there wasn't enough lights to make an outsider feel safe. First thing I did when I got to the boards was look left to make sure no one was going to jump out form behind the container/store. Bright, bright lights - they make a tourist feel good. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think the ad was from 1903. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: A New Board Walk Brilliantly Illuminated By Electricity to Dawn
The concept of lighting in our boardwalk area is not a competition about who's right and wrong. 1903's Brilliant was much different then 2008, and you can't make a fair, or accurate comparison. And, the discussion about lighting isn't just about how much is appropriate, it's more about what kind of equipment is being used. At the moment, AP really isn't being a good neighbor to Ocean Grove because of the overblown lighting in the Casino Parking lot. During most nights of the week, the boardwalk area is pretty much a ghost town, and our city is wasting lot's of money lighting up empty lot's. The light on top of The Berkley would be more appropriate for a disaster then nightly use. I agree that lighting makes people feel safer, but the city didn't make enough effort to install the right kind of lighting fixtures, that fit better into the area they are illuminating. Remember about a year ago when I was looking into buying a telescope? Well, I bought one, and now, I have to go to the Ocean Grove beach, or elsewhere to use it, because light pollution is out of control. I'd also suggest looking at last months National Geographic. The main article is all about light pollution, and ways to illuminate an area that are more realistic. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oak is that really an ad for AP from 1903? I also think you are missing the point that the lighting was a novelty back then. We've been living with outdoor lighting for more then a century now, and it's a normal part of life. The question in AP is simple - Are the fixtures being used appropriate for the usage? Are they cost effective? Could better fixtures have been utilized, that would've done the same job, more appropriately? And, what about the idea of being a better neighbor to Ocean Grove? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakdorf@ wrote: BUT, like werner said, they weren't glaring back then No I reject that. No you can't adhere to it. Oak posted something that supports my position. I pointed out that history is symmetrical with that position. In response, you said nothing about what Oak posted or the position, or if one supports the other (you know, the issue). So no, I don't think you can stop personalizing, just like the various conclusions you post about me below. If you want to stop, then stop. You are the only one making conclusions about me and not the lights. You won't find one conclusion about you or anyone else in my posts. I don't personalize. I know you are irked no matter what I post. Since that is personal, I have no choice but to tell you to STFU. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Tommy - This isn't a court room, it's a message board.
