Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Taped Council Meetings

2007-01-22 Thread kyangazi denson
You think!

For years I've been asking both the council and the BOE, not to mention
Tom Gilmore, Chico and anyone else in positions of power to do just this, put
the meetings, events, etc., on the web / TV. You can't make this stuff up,
the things that go on at meetings and the entertainment is fabulous.

But there was no support from the community to have an APTV on public
access. And my show was already full so I couldn't continue to do this venture
alone. I just couldn't afford to do all the work alone and nobody even watched
or uploaded or let me know how I was doing.

Maureen and Pete have helped a great deal to promote my show, especially
around elections, but I needed more help from the community and nobody wanted
to help run 2 shows...

Glad the BOE has a new website now, maybe they'll let the students in on
the action! Learn a skill, see a dream unfold, get a job, invest in their
future as journalist, radio announcers, or even broadcast journalism, instead
of dieing of boredom.

four years ago, solely because I was tired of our council, mayor and
others saying one thing at the meetings and later saying something
different, did I decide there was a need for better accountablility
here in Long Branch. I was tired of getting minutes of meetings that
did not have an accurate account of what transpired, and audio tape
that either dissapeared or was inaudible. I have with great success
built a web site that shows the council meetings at www.longbranch.tv -

Having been doing this as a private project and not a business, I just
thought you all should know, it's not a major venture. It just takes
someone willing to attend every meeting and spend the time to transfer
the film to digital file and upload it to a web site.

2007-01-21 Thread justifiedright
First AsburyCouple, thank you so much for visiting the site. I just
got back there after about a one month hiatus.

Yes I do agree with you 100% about taping the council meetings. I
can't believe in today's advanced technological age that all meetings
aren't posted to the net.

In Howell Township, the council meeting is shown (I think all day
everyday) on cable channell 77. It is very convenient to just turn it
on and catch up on what is happening. It also allows folks to see for
themselves how the council people act up there and what they say.

Everyone should write to their state reps and ask them to support
Senator Ciesla's bill.

The Asbury Park State reps are Senator Palaia and Assemblymen Kean and
Corodemus (but that's about to change this year).

You are quite right. The BOE records the public portions of the
meeting digitally on CD, which is a matter of public record. I did
respond individually re the vote, but not to the whole group. So I'll
correct that now. Since there were only seven people on the board
rather than a full board of nine, it only took four votes to name
someone to the board. Garrett nominated Mr. Hopson, Mrs. Sanders
seconded it, and the other two votes that seated Mr. Hopson were Mr.
Brewington and the Rev. Smallwood, both (in my opinion) people of good
will and heart. The last person to get to vote because he is the
Board President(thank God)is Robert DiSanto. When the vote got to him
it was, as they say, a fait accompli, so he could either register a
protest vote or affirm the vote. He has to try to work with the
entire board, including Mr. Hopson; Robert's thankless job is akin to
herding cats. Although I certainly cannot speak for him, I can say
that Robert voted yes, which at that point was the diplomatic thing to
do and in keeping with the team spirit admonitions in board policy.
The point that is missing here I obviously did not make very
clear in my initial or subsequent postings. So I'll try to make it
less opaque now. After all four candidates were interviewed in public
(that's an interesting CD right there), the board went into closed
session, as is permitted, and did the necessary straw polling to
present what would hopefully be a unified board in public, prevent any
hard feelings on the part of the candidates not chosen, and have an
expeditious process. Those executive sessions are not recorded,
although minutes are kept as the Open Public Meetings Act provides.
Suffice it to say that what then transpired in public session
immediately thereafter was not consistent with what had transpired in
closed session. More than that I cannot say. Thank God, however,
there were over a dozen witnesses present in that executive session.
I would think the word treachery is not an unfair characterization
of what took place that night, and it had nothing whatever to do with
race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. I have never said that what
took place was illegal; it most certainly was not. It is a matter of
honor and integrity. It certainly cleared up for me once and for all
who I would and wouldn't want to share a foxhole with.

There are several ways to read Frank's post below.

One way is to say that Garrett didn't abide by some deal that was
made against Hopson in the executive session.

Even still, I don't understand how you paint Garrett poorly and
speak glowingly of the other yes voters of Sanders, Brewington and
Smallwood. They all voted the same way on the same guy. I don't
get your nuanced distinction.

The defense of Robert's vote is a double edged sword. One could
argue he does not vote his conscious from what you say. I'm not
saying that is true, but your post makes the case.

Perhaps the 5 who voted for this guy just don't share your view of
him?

I still want to see the racist/homophobe proof. Serious charges

The meetings are recorded on CD, no longer taped.

[AsburyPark] Re: Taped Council Meetings

2007-01-21 Thread asburycheech

the only thing i would add is
thank you frank for answering the questions, and when will the closed
exec. minutes become public, i dont believe it should be too long,
doesnt seem to be any litigation going on

Concerning minutes of meetings: They are normally presented to the
board at the next regular meeting. The public sessions are recorded,
but minutes are kept anyway. Only minutes are kept, and not
recordings, of executive sessions. Upon presentation to the board at
a board meeting, the board can vote to accept them, amend them, or
reject them. Assuming they are accepted by majority vote, they become
official, and the public can ask for copies of the minutes of public
sessions. The closed session minutes are not released, but there is
always a disclaimer that they can be released when the need for
confidentiality no longer exists. To be honest, I've never
understood exactly what that means, and I don't recall the minutes of
any closed sessions ever being made public. I suppose a member of the
public can make an OPRA (Open Public Records Act)request and see how
the legal department handles that. I think they may advise that
certain minutes should be released by the board, but I have never see
that happen either here or elsewhere, so your guess is as good as
mine. In any event, the minutes are not even official until they are
approved at a board meeting. I can't wait myself to see the proposed
minutes of that meeting!
   Frank

Sorry you will have to ask Frank He would know if that is possible.

[AsburyPark] Re: Taped Council Meetings

That's funny, because when I visit New Orleans, prior to Katrina,
there are 2 public, cable channels, devoted to show, not only school
board meetings, but also, City Council meetings, Chamber of Commerce
meetings, etc. The population of New Orleans, prior to Katrina, was
over 500,000 residents. This small city, has under 20,000, residents.
What gives? Are BOE meetings, no longer taped and if so, who sees
them? It would be in the best interest of Asbury Residents, to have
access to and transcription of the meetings, for a nominal fee. This
way, everyone who cares or is interested would be in the loop! For
aanother, this city, has as many problems as cities, the size of New
York and Los Angeles; everyone wanting to be the boss, with no
Indians! I long for the bad old days, in Neptune, sometimes and NO,
don't tell me where I can go! I'm a citizen of America, not NJ, not
La.! I'm not an outsider, or an infamous, insider!
America, you hear? Rev. Kev., I humbly apologize!

First AsburyCouple, thank you so much for visiting the site. I just

Tom, I saw on your sight you are a supporter of the efforts to tape
board of ed meetings, hopefully to post them online. I agree, and
wonder what the argument would be against doing this for Council
meetings as well. Why isn't this being done already. I'd have to
wonder about any members of the city council who were afraid to have
the meetings available for all to see.

Is there any good (or even reasonable) reason for not doing this?
 If
not, why can't this be started asap. I travel and can't make the
  meetings, but would absolutely watch.
