[AsburyPark] Re: sports and education
Mario, For once, I read the APP, on the day it was published! I'm always behind, but I get enough news here, that when I read the paper, I sometime, get another take on someone else's reading. Boola Boola! My uncle Joe, who fought at the Battle of the Bulge, used to sing that song all day for us! He used to sing the songs, from the Jeanette McDonald films, ALL parts, until we had tears rolling down our faces, from laughing. On the song, Boola Boola, those were the only words, he knew! Imagine him, singing THAT, all day! For those who think me crazy, I think it's genetic, in my family! They were such an eccentric bunch of people! My Grandma, was very dramatic! A college educated Southern Belle, to the Max! You haven't seen Steel Magnolias, until you saw them! Very genteel, but FIRM! She ran EVERYTHING, with a steel hand, in a cotton glove! There ARE no dumb southern women, from my vantage point! On the school principal, I admire him, for getting off to a good start. Just showing the kids, that I care and I give a damn, speaks volumes! I've seen others try to do the same, but the system is geared to beat you down! I will pray for the success of a genuinely naive man, but since he comes from the valleys of California, he just might do it! As far as the board, just when I thought they were all getting along, I find that Frank D, is all alone. It must be because he is on the side for right! Okay, going to go back to your link and watch Boola Boola! Thanks Mario, I need a lift! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 11/28/2007 7:18:53 P.M. I know I am a frequent critic of the city council, but in this case, the city has given Danny the permits he needs. That should have been the happy end of the story. I am usually not a conspiracy theorist, but I'd really like to find out just who or what is behind this. Does anyone realize the thousands and thousands of dollars in billing hours that our lawyers have charged the taxpayers in their effort to stop the Little League? My yelling and screaming at the lawyers has accomplished nothing. I have said to them that I hope Danny and the Little League sue the BOE, and if he does, I will be a witness for the Little League, and if it means I have to resign my seat on the BOE in order to do that, then so be it. If the monthly bill for the law firm comes up at tomorrow night's BOE meeting, I will ask that it be separated, so that can have the pleasure of voting against it and explaining why. Frank D'Alessandro Thank you for the post, please provide us the voters with some answers, are not the lawyers appointed by the bd? i would think for them to go off on a crusade they would need the support of 5 bd. members, who are these knuckleheads? Again, speaking only for myself, the BOE has on at least three occasions voted its support for the Little League and Danny's efforts. Each and every time the law firm on who knows whose initiative has turned yes into no. (To add to my disclaimer above, I must add that I voted against this law firm but I was in the distinct minority.) This law firm acts as if we work for them and not vice-versa. Unfortunately, when they spend countless hours (and thousands of taxpayer dollars) on report after report advising the BOE that 17 hoops have to be jumped through before Danny can proceed, there are some who believe they are acting in the best interests of the kids. To me it seems like a protection racket of some kind. And most unfortunately, the new state monitor, yet another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy, backs the lawyers! The state claims to have veto power over the BOE. So I do not think you will find a single person on the board who does not support Danny and the Little League, at least I hope that's the case, but we are more and more marginalized. And, yes, I have been totally ineffective and I know it. Only in Asbury Park could this possibly be an issue. Any other town would celebrate the efforts of volunteers like Danny, not try to thwart them. I am ready to pay for the banner that can go over the entrance to the city stating Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here. As stated in another post, the Board meeting is tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30 at the Bradley Elem. School on 3rd Ave. Frank D'Alessandro Yahoo! Mario, Boola, Boola, was before anybody's time! I echo your sentiment, too! Academics were the thing for me, too! Sports is the reward, for having done the work, first! Back in the 70's I saw nothing but kids who wanted to be a pro! My advice was, learn all you can, first so you enjoy the fact, that sports is the recreation deserved, for a job well done in school! I dunno, but I enjoyed cheering, knowing that, I missed the honor roll, by a few points! All A's and maybe a B+, kept me on the cheering squad! Without those grades, I was toast! No activities, except books, were it not for my fierce competiveness, in getting those grades! It guaranteed me, that I wasn't just a pretty face! My nemisis, was I had an older sister, who was skipped a grade, she was so smart! She graduated Xavier at 16, honor society, a debutante, her senior year, etc. I had to follow her example, because this was how parents raised their kids, back then. It was Be like your sister, which was no easy feat, for me. I had to put my nose to the grindstone, studing most nights until after 10PM, when there was mid-terms, etc. To my surprise, when you are a constant A student, you get exempted from certain exams, unless they are state mandated! I was one lucky kid, to have the kind of parents, I had. My father taught me Algebra, who without his help, I'd have been a bum, as the sisters would say! So no, I didn't become a bum, or the H word, so prevalent in today's society. The B and H words were for girls who didn't care about themselves. My mother said they were common! Funny, I never heard a boy say those words, only grownups used that language and rarely. I remember my Mom, calling someone a harlot and when I asked what it was, she rolled her eyes at me and said, you don't want to know! Sports are good for children. It teaches sportsmanship and discipline. How to be a member of a team, rather than a gang and making friends, for life. When an adult who could be doing something else, takes time, for kids, I call that love. It's sad, that the Little League Coach is going through something that can be made simple! This is what turns me off and wonder what the hell is going on in this town! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 11/27/2007 9:12:31 A.M. I was heartened by the extreme show of support by AP parents for their football program, but I came to the same conclusion Mario did. Yes, it was a great show of support for an undefeated football team, but, where, I wondered, was that show of support(and outrage) over the sad state of Asbury's school district? Asbury Park seems to be a front runner, when the team is good support them, when the show is Springsteen support him, but the little guys and the losers are just left behind. Fortunately for me, I taught in a system where academics were a top priority. Academics were complemented, not overshadowed, by sports; and more than enough parents were just as interested in Advanced Placement scores as they were in the game scores. I loved teaching advanced placement, BUT I'm also in favor of fully funded performing arts AND physical education classes for all students: teaching life-long skills for physical well-being. Yahoo! traderdube...I guess that's why we don't get it. That being that we grew up in Ocean Twp and played on what was the nicest little league field in almost the country. I know. Where are the leaders of the community and why wasn't their voices screaming out against the BS? Reidy, the Mayor, Bruno, the Bd of Ed, the school administration. Government in AP I've come to realize is like living in a family. You build up defenses and mechanisms and ways of interacting with spouses, parents, children and siblings. Sometimes the noise of the past keep us from hearing or seeing what is NOW. We don't really listen sometimes. You build up positions like a military operation and refuse to budge. Take for instance the city and the BOE. Why be at an impasse? I am sure the condemnation of the BOE headquarters is a sore point. I am sure there are even other circumstances I am not aware of. We have to stop being prisoners of the past. We have to recognize that perhaps we were wrong, or even if we were not and the other was, how long do they have to pay for it? And for some reason there is a tendency not to be open in AP (and I assume most places). I give a person/entity more credit when they say I made a mistake. Move one. I don't suggest singing kumbaya around the camp fire, but there has to be a realization that we are all in the same boat. Ultimately I believe most want to get to the same place but just have different ways of getting there. I know the city was aware of the BOE's position of standing in the way of the LL field. Whay was done to bridge the gap I don't know. Nor do I know why if nothing was done. Frank was courageous and spoke out. So instead of placing blame we move forward and fix the problem. That is always my solution. What needs to be done to fix the problem. All else is meaningless. Yahoo!
