Assam BJP Candidates In Desperate Crimes
Ramen
Barua, the person arrested from the residence of an MP in Delhi while
trying to extort money in the name of the ULFA, has been identified as
Ranjan Bikash Borgohain, who was the BJP candidate from the Tingkhong
legislative assembly constituency during the last Assembly polls in
Assam. He was arrested from Dhubri MP Anowar Hussain’s New Delhi
residence on saturday by the Delhi Police.
Meanwhile
another BJP candidate Anamika Barua was yesterday arrested by the
Tezpur police on charges of dacoity. Anamika was the BJP candidate from
the prestigious Tezpur assembly constituency during the last assembly
elections held in 2006. She has been accused of snatching Rs. 55,000
from a business establishment along with four armed accomplices.
Another youth and the vehicle used for the dacoity are also in police
custody.

1000 Hour Bandh To Choke Northeast
A
marathon 1000 hour bandh called by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students
Union that started yesterday might choke essential supplyies to the
entire northeastern region. The bandh has been called by the Biswajit
Roy faction of the AKRSU in support of their demand for carving out a
separate state called Kamatipur out of parts of North Bengal and Assam.
Although no untoward incident or violence was reported from anywhere,
movement of commercial vehicles was severely restricted. Buses and
trucks plying between West Bengal and Assam, bringing in essential
supplies to the northeast, were stranded on the West Bengal side of the
border. Police arrested several hundred picketeers trying to enforce
the bandh from the Lower Assam states.

ULFA Rules Out Talks
In
an statement released to the media, the ULFA has categorically ruled
out peace talks with the government of India, thereby pouring cold
water on the recent efforts by a few (now expelled) ULFA leaders to
mobilise public opinion to force the top leadership of the outfit to
sit for peace talks. The statement signed by publicity wing member
Ranjan Barthakur, also accused the pro-talk leaders led by Mrinal
Hazarika of trying to create an uprising against the ULFA leadership
and malign the image of the outfit. In referance to a recent remark by
Hazarika that the top leadership would fade away like Phizo if they
refused to sit for peace talks, the statement mentioned that A.Z.Phizo
never sat for peace talks or compromised his position and he remained
an inspiration in Nagaland and the entire Northeast. The Ulfa would
rather be like Phizo than like Laldenga, the statement said, refering
to the former Mizo National Front leader who went on to become the
Chief Minister of Mizoram after coming overground.

Cabinet Team For Fact Finding Mission To BTAD
The
Assam government has constituted a high powered team of cabinet
ministers to tour the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) next
week to find out the reasons for the deteriorating law and order
situation and suggest measures to restote normalcy. The cabinet
committee comprises Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rockybul Hussain, Rihan
Daimary, Chandan Brahma and Pramila Rani Brahma and they are scheduled
to visit the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) at
Kokrajhar on saturday. This move comes after pressure from opposition
parties during the recent monsoon session of the Assembly on the
situation in the BTAD where over 50 people have died in clashes between
the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) cadres and the ex
Bodoland Liberation Tigers (BLT) this year. While the NDFB is in a
ceasefire agreement with the government of India, the BLT was disbanded
after the Bodo Accord and its leaders are now in the Bodo Peoples Front
(BPF), the ruling party in the BTC and partner of the Tarun Gogoi led
Congress government of Assam.

Well Ms Shukla. Thanx for your reply. But where have we said we do not condemn
such inhuman behaviour.

We condemn such behaviour in the most strong manner and equally condemn belief
of people like you who considers the people of NE as of lesser civility.

As it is clear that an apology is beyond your arrogance, I hope you will
consider using proper facts and words while writing on such sensitive issues in
the future.

Yoronso did not just kill a dog -- though that is bad enough-- he tortured an
animal to death.
Not only is what he did illegal , it is also morally reprehensible.
It cannot be defended as tradition or custom. He is as much a danger to his own
kind as he is to others. It is perverted minds with a taste for cruelty that
are a threat to society as a whole. This is why Nagas and other North Eastern
Indians must join with all Indians in demanding punishment for one who brings
shame not only to himself but to his community , race, country and species. No
human can or should condone barbarity.

Dear Ms. Shukla,

I was agast to read your article "Murder most foul" in the Deccan
Chronicle
(July 15, 2008). Yes, I was agast as to how the poor JNU's campus dog was
bludgeoned to death, but I was more agast of your rather poor knowledge of,
and condescension toward the North Eastern states of India.

It maybe that you perhaps first need an object lesson in geography, possibly
history of India (you know - get to know your country), and not in the
least, a good lesson in humility.

First of all, you ought to know that the North Eastern States comprises of
many other states. In Assam, a North-Eastern State, for example, there are
many vegitarians, as well as non-vegitarians, and the population is mostly
Hindu. Manipur, another North-Eastern state, too is mostly Hindu. Dogs
certainly are not on the menu.

It is unfortunate, that you could not bring yourself to appreciate the
beauty of the landscape of Nagaland. You probably did not find it in your
heart to appreciate and study the culture, the language and customs of the
good people of Nagaland. If I could suggest, you might want to try and read
the volumes of good literature written by the British (many of the
army) on the North-Eastern states during the Raj.

You make some sweeping statements regarding the whole of the North East,
when you declare,

"Apparently North-Eastern students at JNU regularly lynch and barbecue
dogs."

Really! Have you ever met or heard of any Assamese or Manipuri who eats
dogs? I know, you may think 'they all look alike' and hence your
condescension and then clubbing of all the 'natives' together. The
fact,
however, is the people in the North-Eastern states are as varied and
different as other parts of the country, and so are their food habits. They
come in different hues.
That is what makes India unique, as the country comprises of all hues,
shapes, forms, colors, religions, vegitarians, and non-vegitarians.

And when you write

Dear all,

Who is this Ambika? How she dare call all NE people dog eaters? Please donot
let her escape like this. I agree that our politicians donot raise their voice
in the parliament, but our journalists are not. If anybody from anywhere talk
some bullshit people should not accept. But as I have seen, most Indians either
donot have any knowledge about NE (except the bussinessmens who have their
bussiness in NE) or unaware what exists there. People like Ambika, think that
she is the most learned person in the world and so comment anything on anyone
(without knowing anything about NE). But she definitely has (unknowingly)
expressed her thinking (mindset) which resembles people from the stone age.
I would request our journalist friends to rehabilitate and correct her (Ambika)
mindset about NE.

Hello Ambikaji,

Namaste.I am writing this in reference to the piece written by you entitled
" Murder Most Foul " ( The Deccan Herald,July 15 2008 ).
First point first. Please allow me to join hands in running crusade against
those who mistreat animals. We all, with our right conscience, ought to take
anyone to task with harshest language possible for abusing animals. An
exemplary punishment must be meted out to the Naga student, who subjected an
animal to such a cruel treatment. The court of law must decide first as to
whether or not he is guilty of the crime,he is accused to have committed. At
this time,I would not rush to judgement pending full disclosure of
facts.I,therefore, would prefer to remain skeptical until full findings by
the court are out in the open.
I am,however,shell-shocked by one of your statement in which you have
bunched the people of the North-Eastern states together and stratified them
as one.A direct quote would, perhaps, carry the right flavor :
"Apparently,North-Eastern students at JNU regularly lynch and barbecue dogs
".A well-informed person like you must be aware of the fact that the
North-East region consists of seven states ( gone up to eight with the
inclusion of Sikkim ).Each of these states differs from the other in terms
of diet, dialect and dress.Without a modicum of the doubt, the people hailing
from most of these states don't consume dog meat.It is but natural that an
Assamese and a Manipuri or a Tripuri for that matter would take umbrage at
this sweeping generalisation.
May I request you to retract the particular statement in order to clear
things as day light? If you find me in error in saying so,please feel free
to explain as to where I have erred.

[Assam] Indian International airports

2008-07-20 Thread kamal deka
  -- Forwarded message --
*
**Read this carefully *
Be Careful at the Indian Airports, This is a well organized conspiracy by
Indian Immigration, Police, Customs and Air India staff with networking at
all the Indian International Airports. Be careful when ever you give your
passport to Immigration/ Customs/Air India staff. The pass port can be
easily tampered and can create trouble to you. They have found easy way of
making money from NRIs. This is the way it works:

At the time of the passenger's departure, if the passenger is not looking at
the officer while he is stamping the exit, the officer very cleverly tears
away one of the page from the passport. When the passenger leaves the
immigration counter, the case is reported on his computer terminal with full
details. Now all over India they have got full details of the passenger with
Red Flag flashing on the Passport number entered by the departure
immigration officer. They have made their money by doing above. On arrival
next time, he is interrogated. Subject to the passenger's period of stay
abroad, his income and standing etc., the price to get rid of the problem is
settled by the Police and Immigration people. If someone argues, his future
is spoiled because there are always some innocent fellows who think the
honesty is the basis of getting justice in India ...

Please advises every passenger to be careful at the airport. Whenever they
hand over the passport to the counters of Air India, or immigration or the
customs, they must be vigilant, should not remove eyes from the passport
even if the officer in front tries to divert their attention. Also, please
pass this information to all friends, media men and important politicians.
Every month 20-30 cases are happening all over India to rob the NRIs the
minute he lands. Similar case has happened with Aramco's Arifuddin. He was
traveling with his family. They had six passports. They got the visa of
America and decided to go via Hyderabad from Jeddah. They reached Hyderabad.
Stayed about a month and left for the States. When they reached the States,
the page of the American visa on his wife's passport was missing. At the
time of departure from Hyderabad it was there, the whole family had to
return to Hyderabad helplessly. On arrival at Bombay back, they were caught
by the police and now it is over 2 months, they are running after the
Police, Immigration officers and the Courts. On going in to details with
him, he found out the following: One cannot imagine, neither can believe,
that the Indian Immigration dept can play such a nasty game to harass the
innocent passengers.

All the passengers traveling to & fro India via Bombay and Hyderabad must be
aware of this conspiracy. Every month 15 to 20 cases are taking place, at
each mentioned airport, of holding the passengers in the crime of tearing
away the passport pages. On interviewing some of them, none of them was
aware of what had happened. They don't know why, when and who tore away the
page from the middle of the passport. One can imagine the sufferings of such
people at the hands of the immigration, police and the court procedures in
India after that. The number of cases is increasing in the last 2-3 years.
People who are arriving at the immigration, they are questioned and their
passports are being held and they have to go in interrogation. Obviously,
the conspiracy started about 2 to 3 years ago, now the results are coming.
Some of the Air India counter staff too is involved in this conspiracy.

KINDLY SEND THIS TO AS MANY AS YOUR FRIENDS ACROSS THE WORLD AND ALSO
REQUEST THEM TO CHECK THE PASSPORT AT THE CHECKING COUNTERS AND BEFORE
LEAVING THE AIRPORT

2008-07-20 Thread Rajen & Ajanta Barua

  Dear Goswami
All I was doing is to change the focus from the North east to India for
the wisdom of Ambika behn. India is a country full of contaridtions and one
cannot generalise a particular region for for this or that. That is what I
was trying to bring home to Ambika. Today, one friend told me that there was
a news paper report that in North India some people eat human corpse. Are we
then going to say, like Ambiaka did, that all North Idiand eat human corpse?
That was my point.

Regarding your views of eating dog food, let us not be judgemental about
whethere eating dogfodd is better than eating fish, chicken, snake, frog,
monkey or cow. Scientifically speaking, I donot see any difference, and
nobody should.

Regarding cruel treatment to animal, is a different issue. The question
remains, why Indians still do practise animal sacrifise for worship of Durga
and Kali. It should be stopped by law, treating the issue on equal level.

Educating for global competency - improving curriculum etc - before global
competency Indian need knowledge of cultures within India! otherwise Samuel
Huntington' prophesy may become true even within India

For Indians first they have to teach about different regions of India - even
so-called educated elite , who have stayed in NE India seem to be blissfully
biased - Ambika Shukla seems a case in point.

[Assam] Fairbank Scandal - White Slave's bidding ; Book: Lincoln by Gore Vidal

2008-07-20 Thread umesh sharma
This is a conversation between  Mary Todd Lincoln (16th US President Abraham
Lincoln’s wife) and Chase (who became US Treasury Secretary under Lincoln). The
shocking aspect is how women slaves were treated - even those who looked white
but had only 98% white blood - I mean were one-sixty fourth Black (African
American). That person with 98% White ancestry would look totally White. So
imagine a situation of a white slave been sold at auction (page 95, Lincoln by
Gore Vidal, 1984, 14th reprint,1990):

“Chase was serene. ‘The Cabinet is as one behind the President, in every way.’
What, he wondered, would the votes be tonight? ‘I was involved in the so-called
Fairbank Scandal, which nearly started a civil war in Lexington. That was close
to twenty years ago.’

Mary was suddenly alert.  ‘Calvin Fairbank, sir? The minister?’

‘That’s right. A group of us in Ohio would raise money so that we could buy
slaves and then free them. Mr Fairbank was a sort of agent of ours.’

‘Eliza!’ Mary exclaimed. ’I was there that day, at the slave auction, in the
courthouse square.’

‘I am told that no one who was there has ever forgotten what happened .’

‘So you, sir, were behind Mr Fairbank?’

‘I was indeed. When I heard of Eliza’s case, I gave him the money to buy her.”

‘I never knew that, sir.’ For the first time, Mary looked at Chase with
something close to admiration. The girl Eliza had belonged to a well-to-do
family; she had been gently treated and well educated. When the family died
out, she was put up for sale by their distant heirs. Ordinarily, this would
have been a familiar if depressing story, but the case of Eliza was much
discussed in the press because she was a lovely white girl of eighteen who
happened to be one sixty-fourth Negro. At the auction, the Reverend Fairbank
had bid against a Frenchman from New Orleans who, it was rumored , kept a
brothel. The courthouse square was crowded. People had come from miles around.
Abolitionists had threatened  violence. With some horror Mary watched the
bidding. . She herself was only a few years older than the girl who stood,
shuddering, on the block, the tall auctioneer beside her.

When the Frenchman’s bid began to flag---the price had gone to a thousand
dollars ---the auctioneer had shouted,’ Come on, you mean hearted gentlemen!
Look what I have got!’ With that he pulled down the girl’s blouse. Mary could
still remember the horrified gasp from the crowd. Many ladies hurried away. Yet
when a black woman was stripped , no one had ever noticed. The bidding resumed;
then flagged again. This time the auctioneer pulled up the girl’s skirts to
show her naked thighs. There were now shouts of anger from a part of the crowd;
and raucous shouts and whistles from the other. Finally, the girl was sold to
the Reverend Fairbank for one thousand four hundred eighty-five dollars---Mary
could still hear the auctioneer’s voice intone, ‘Fourteen eighty-five, going,
going, gone! And sold damned cheap.’

When Fairbank came to take the weeping girl down from the block , a loud voice
shouted, ‘ What’re you gonna do with her now?’

‘I’, going to set her free!’ shouted Fairbank. There was almost, as Chase had
noted, a civil war right then and there in Lexington’s courthouse square.”

(end page 96, Lincoln by Gore Vidal, 1984, 14th reprint,1990)

Not much different than the treatment of Dalit brides not so long ago by
village landlords in UP and Bihar - north India - I would say this (slavery in
Lincoln's time) was much worse.

Any comments?

Re: [Assam] House plants

2008-07-20 Thread Chan Mahanta
Sunlight Alpana, sunlight!

Crotons need plenty of sunlight to develop their brilliant colors. If
you put it out in the yard, in two weeks you will begin to see a
change. But don't take it into the sun right out from indoors. The
leaves will get scalded by the UV of sunlight and you will lose them.
First put them outdoors in the shade ( north side of the house for a
couple of days. Then give a few hours of morning sunlight for two or
three days. Then only expose it to full sunlight.

Another problem with Crotons indoors is spider-mite infestation. They
are tiny, almost microscopic critters that look like spiders ( they
ARE arachnids and not insects so ordinary plant insecticides won't
kill them), that cover the underside of leaves and suck all the
nutrients out of the plant . If left untreated they will ultimately
kill the plant. Spider-mites love dry , warm environments. How to
determine if there are spider-mites? Easy! Take a piece of white bond
paper, shake the leaves. If a few or many tiny specs of dust-like
things fall off on the paper, begin to move around and if you wipe
them with your fingertip and the crushed mites leave tiny smudges of
greenish yellow stain, they are your enemies.

Two ways to control:

*** Hose the underside of the plants off thoroughly with a
garden spray nozzle. Once every
two weeks or so will keep them under control. They don't like water.

*** Spray with a solution of Kelthane, a strong chemical,
that is available in nurseries
or agricultural chemical supply stores. You won't find them
at Lowe's or Home Depots.

Potho is an easy one. They too like good amount of indirect light.
But they should NOT be over-watered. Water the plant only when the
soil surface is completely dry. Thorough watering once every two
weeks or so will suffice. Fertilize with weak ( half the recommended
strength) indoor plant food solution every time you water.

Next thing you know you will be the Croton Queen and Potho Princess
of Houston :-).

Re: [Assam] Murder Most Foul- ambika shukla pls stand up and send a clarification

2008-07-20 Thread Alpana B. Sarangapani

Great to hear from you, Ram.

I just wanted to butt in here to make a few things clear.

This "story" has been doing the rounds for the last 10 days or so.

Right from the beginning, I have not read any one writing that torturing the
dog 'Kali' was the right thing to do. Everyone has said that they were
appaled/agast/sorry etc. about the torture.

I don't know if you read those mails right from the beginning, this point has
been repeated over and over again. And frankly, this is nothing new here.
Nobody has objected about Shukla's crusade for preventing animal cruelty.

The basic problem with Ambika Shukla is:

a) She generalized all North East Indians and made it look like we all eat dog
meat and ill-treat animals.

b) She was condescending.

c) The student in question should go through the Indian legal system, instead
of being convicted by some media hype.

Let us not make it look like this is the first time we woke up and found out
that torturing of dog (or any animal) is reprehensible.

BTW, if you did not know, we have two lovely German Shepherds which we treat as
our children.

I am sorry, if I offended anybody but reading your note made me wonder if this
point (of condemning the torture incident) was ever missed. FYI, this point has
been written over and over again right from the beginning.

I am just disgusted.

Hussain at New Delhi yesterday. He had gone to the MP's house in
connection with a demand for Rs. 25 lakhs for the ULFA. Police found
two more demand letters addressed to external affairs minister Pranab
