Hi Martin,

I had a similar problem with my Soekris net4801 and a 1-port HFC ISDB
card. The box was crashing every few days or sometimes just Asterisk
was silently crashing.

Because I still had warrenty for it, I sent the box to my distributor
are they tested the box for a week.
The problem was the power supply. Without the PCI card all worked
well, but with the card it crashed again.

So I bought a bigger power supply and now it works.
Maybe in conjuction with your low temperature this could also be the
problem - who knows.

Martin,

I would have to think the low temps have something to do with it, from
the specs...

TDM400P Environment, Temperature:
   0 to 50° C (32 to 122° F) operation
-20 to 65° C (4 to 149° F) storage

Keep in mind that standard semiconductor parts aren't individually
tested for temperature operation, but are validated by statistical
sampling. So, some parts will be more susceptible than others, but
presumably within the spec range, which you are touching at the bottom.

thank you for your reply.

My hardware is a TDM400P with 2 * FXO and 1 * FXS daughter boards

It has been working fine for the last year. The problems have only come
about (coincidentally) since going to 0.6.2, and more significantly
since the temperature has dropped. This particular box is fitted in a
room with no environmental control and temperatures have been down

What zaptel hardware are you using? What is ZAPMODS set to in your
rc.conf file? (cat /etc/rc.conf |grep ZAP). Can you paste a copy of
your zapata.conf and zaptel.conf files?

I have a half-dozen or more systems running 0.6.2 with zaptel hardware
and have had no problems. The hardware ranges from the original TDM400p
hardware to the new 8 port digium card and the 8 port Rhino cards so I
have a wide range of Zaptel hardware covered (and it's all working).

area. However I think I need a version of Astlinux 0.6.2 which is
compiled with debug symbols before I can go any further.

Re: [Astlinux-users] Asterisk exiting
From: Martin Rogers - 2008-12-16 00:05
Hi

This box has been fine for a couple of days but has just ditched 0.6.2
back to the OS prompt again

Can anyone advise on how I can capture debug trace info ready for the
next time it does it.

I have another system with almost identical software configuration
running on a Neoware E140 which has never crashed since its
installation. Apart from the motherboard, it differs from the crashing
box in two key respects. The machine which crashes out of asterisk :

1) runs a TDM400 (and so uses Zaptel drivers), and
2) it runs in a relatively cool environment (i.e. currently 0-6
degrees

Celcius).

Humidity may also be high. However I would have expected environmental
conditions to affect the hardware and therefore ditch the whole OS -
not
just Asterisk unless the TDM or its daughter boards are affected
and

causing Asterisk to exit.

Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

Mart

Barring a crash of the Asterisk process(es), there ought to be
something logged. Since you are not getting anything logged I wonder
if you have a crash occurring...

I am still learning the AstLinux environment, however I know that on
the Linux appliance we build where I work we end up putting crash
files in /var/crash/ I am not sure if that is a standard convention or
if it is simply my company's convention. Maybe someone can chime in to
say if saving crash dumps is enabled on AstLinux and if not how to
change it.

In the meantime, if you issue a "ulimit -c unlimited" command then run
Asterisk from the shell you issued the ulimit command from you should
get a core file if Asterisk is crashing. If that happens then we might
have something to go on.

Good luck,
Tod

Re: [Astlinux-users] Asterisk exiting

Mart,

I personally prefer to figure out what is wrong but if you simply want
to keep things running then you could do this

Tod,

I will look into setting up syslog on the phones. Thanks for the
suggestions.

Not much help, but my Soekris net5501 running 0.6.2 has been up since
the day after 0.6.2 was released. Previously I was experimenting with
0.6.1 and did not notice any issues of that nature.

Is there in anything in /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure?

My phones are set to syslog to a Unix server. Do you have that setup?
And if so, do your phones/ATAs tell you about what time they started
having problems with contacting/registering with your Asterisk box?

Wyse Winterm box. The 0.6.1 upgrade could coincidental, my purpose in
mentioning it here is to see if I can narrow down the cause based on
others' experiences.

Very simply, if I leave the PBX powered on overnight, in the morning
Asterisk has exited. The console which was left at the CLI command
prompt is back at the OS shell "pbx #" prompt (obviously it is not
possible to make calls from the phones connected to the switch).

There are no messages either logged or recorded on the console to
suggest what the cause was.

I wondered if anyone else had seen anything like this, or if anyone
has

any clue as to what might be the problem.

Thanks
Mart
