Re: 3 Kingdoms Mud As of today, you now start with some basic gear at login. It isn't anything special, but it's something. You can still drop link and keep your equipment, but now if you log out and back in at any time, you start with some basic newbie gear. You can also use the gearup command to acquire said gear at any time, for example if you lose your equipment upon death. Most of this info can be found from announcement 802 onward, so aread 802, aread 803, etc. I think they're in the process of updating the helpfiles. The quest helpfile has been updated, and I don't know if newbieland has a helpfile itself or not, or if they've disabled the level 5 warning. A lot of people I've seen sign up lately just use the jump start machine now, since starting from level 1 is basically pointless now that you can access newbieland up to level 50.Also, a few things I should have mensioned early on.Autohp will remove the automatic HP display every round of co mbat, if you don't like that. There are histories for pretty much every channel. For any chatline, such as flapchat or your guild channel, it's channel, then a hyphen, then an h. So for the newbie channel, it'd be newb -h to see the history. For tells, says, shouts and other things, it's usually the word and then hist. Tellhist, sayhist, shouthist, etc.Hope that helps some of you get started! If you'd like any help getting experience or gear, just let me know, I'm gordan in game, and I'll do what I can. Hope to see you there! Re: Braillemon status update!
Re: Braillemon status update! Hi,Jeffb, regarding the Pokêdex, the actual names are shown in there when you caught the corresponding Pokêmon. But it doesn't get filled in the right order necessarily, since every Pokêmon has a set number. So, the first Pokêmon you get maybe is not number 1, but number 28 or something else. Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman
Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman Mmm, interesting Dark. Do you also judge audio dramas by the quality of their sound effects? It seems to me that you are unwilling to acknowledge the ideal of parser IF , if not the implementation. To me, IF is no different from any other illusory craft; it's greatest when the player and the author of the program are in complete accord. Of course that doesn't happen 100% of the time but I think most experienced IF players find that it happens often enough that of course we know what was intended. Now whether that's adequate for you or others is a matter of opinion, but I see closed parsers and "Point and click" as fundamental violations of player intent if not actually then in spirit. I do acknowledge that there are *excellent* examples of the latter, but they are IMO almost always overshadowed by the almost innate beauty of well-executed IF. The only w ay I can imagine this not being the case is if your experience with IF has been so very poor that you really haven't enjoyed the advantages of an open parser, which could only be true if your inputs were simply way too advanced and/or unguessable to have been of any use to the game ( yes, I said game, not program ). Now, I have played IF for many, many, many years and I do accept that there is a certain lingua franca of IF that one cannot just guess, and for what that's worth I think this has to change, in keeping with ideals. But I've yet to see anyone disagree with the idea of reconciling computers for use by players, instead of the other way around. That's how IF started--when someone wanted to express their experience to their children about cave exploration. Perhaps you just don't agree with that ideal, or consider any artistic merit outside of the in-game prose to be beside consideration--I don't know, I'm just guessing.Anyway, JMO. I'm sure this will continue to be something I'll just never fully understand. Perhaps you just don't agree with that ideal, or consider any artistic merit outside of the in-game pros e to be beside consideration--I don't know, I'm just guessing.Anyway, JMO. Re: frameworks to develop audiogames
Re: frameworks to develop audiogames If you're wrapping C++ code without intermediate C layers, then you know what you're doing already and my comments are not aimed at you. You're also building a library that will be basically useless in any other language that needs a C API, but hey-your loss. perhaps you already have something in C++ that you're already having to limit yourself to VS 2008 for, but if not, don't go down that road. But seriously, the compiler restriction is a huge deal, mostly because Microsoft has now given us all of C++11 and we can't access it if we're building Python extensions in any way. The controversies about C++11 aside, there are killer features in there that boost productivity a lot.Someone needs to do a PEP to get the official windows builds updating with the MS compiler suite; MS seems to actually be deciding that updating C++ is now a worthwhile thing. VC++ 2014 is dropping stuff towards C++14, etc. It's k ind of like saying that you have to build libraries for Python 3 in Python 2, or some similar nonsense. As for authorization, we've had this conversation before on these forums: any authorization scheme can be cracked, need only be cracked once, and that's it. So using Python makes development months shorter and maybe gets you cracked one month earlier. But you can be smarter-there are other things besides bytecode shuffling. For example, full-on encryption of the pyc files with a modded interpreter, writing a small but crucial piece of the application in C and having that piece also be responsible for authorization, and whatever else your devious mind can come up with. Since C++ would only buy a couple months at most anyway, I don't see what the problem here is.But really the question of authorization is this. Is there someone in the target audience who is both smart enough to crack it and who would care to crack it? I t hink not for Python-I could easily come up with a nonstandard method that's not worth your time. There are few programmers in this community who would have the knowledge to actually reverse bytecode shuffling for sourcecode extraction, and it maybe takes 2 days for me to move chunks of critical logic into C. Which I can do at the end of the project when it's ready for release and I've got something to actually worry about authorizing. Re: Accessible C++ Compiler
Re: Accessible C++ Compiler Visual studio sort of works, but it depends which version. Every version has its own unique special big problems, and I sort-of-jokingly call it the choose your hell adventure game. The problem is that for stuff beyond the basics, Visual Studio is it for windows-there are huge swathes of the Windows API that aren't on MinGW, and VS is the only IDE that talks to the MS compilers right.Eclipse is more accessible, assuming you can get it set up in the first place. But doing that isn't so easy for C++, requiring as it does a working MinGW or Cygwin toolchaijn and a bunch of configuration. Now, I'm going to be "helpful", but you're going to disagree. You won't in 6 months or so, but you probably will for now. I know of few if any blind programmers who don't follow this path in the end and I know of few if any just-starting blind programmers that like this answer. Nevertheless, it's the only one I and everyone I know have found barring a great deal of experience as a sighted developer before going blind:Use the command prompt. All your accessibility issues disappear, you get next to nothing from the IDE as a blind person, and literally any compiler works. You'll also be in a quite good position to program on Linux down the road, administer a webserver, or to go into a variety of other different places. It works with most programming languages, all version control systems I am aware of, and there are even some languages (like Python) where lots of sighted people do it, too. Using cin and cout is how it's done, and because your IDE isn't redirecting to inaccessible text controls, you get them read automatically. I know the command prompt can seem frightening, but barring some sort of legislative change or a suddenly philanthropic company caring and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, you're going to spend more tim e in the end fighting your IDE than just learning the command prompt. If you have Visual Studio, you can get at it by looking up how to launch the developer command prompt; cl myfile.cpp compiles, myfile runs it. Literally everything reads with no further hoops. Specific directions depend on the version, but once you figure it out you can make a desktop shortcut. If you don't have Visual Studio, you want it because it's basically the only good Windows compiler. What are you trying to do in C++, anyway? We may need to go into project management and build systems for anything larger than very very small. I'm not sure why C++ is coming up again-the "Should I use C++ for audiogames?" question has been hammered into the ground and buried forever, or I'd have thought anyway. If you're dead set on it, go look at CMake, and then be very very afraid. Or fight your IDE because your IDE does the same things, only with a ton of accessibility "adventures". If you are dead set on C++ and nothing will sway you, then good luck for you will need it. But seriously-with C++, figuring out how to deal with inaccessible IDEs is only the beginning of the exquisite horror. I say this as an experienced programmer with thousands of lines of C++ code. The best thing you can do after figuring this problem out is to stop asking questions here and get on Stack Overflow-the answers to most of the C++-specific problems are well beyond the scope of what most people here do. Re: Mortal Kombat x officially announced! I agree. I will likely just buy the original, if at all... and hope that there are good unlockables. I didn't buy much dlc for MK 9 and may not for this one either... over the last few years I've found MK has started losing its appeal. It's fun, but the only factor that's always set it apart has been its blood factor... and it's starting to get old. lol The presentation is good though, so we'll see. The sounds are still similar to what we hear in MK 9 even from the stream... nevertheless I am excited for this game. We shall see come next year! No! when NVDA started existing, jaws had already 10 or 12 years since it was created. So, this is not, and will never be true. NVDA has copied most of the features of jaws, and this doesn't need so much work to realize it. Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman The thing I don't like about gamebooks is that it is way to easy to cheat. What I mean is that if a player is not happy with the choice he/she made in the gamebook, all they have to do is hit the back button on their browzer to undo that choice and pick a different one. This would allow them to easily win the game. This is why I don't really play gamebooks, because I want the choices to actually result in consequences, and they don't when I can just hit the back button to undo my previous choice. Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman
Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman Fundamentally Sebby, I think we approach the problem differently. I think of interactive fiction (any interactive fiction), as a game, a computer program. It is not a human, and no amount of if purist propergander will convince me of the "full natural language syntax" making it one. However complex your inputs, your still dealing with a machine that has no concept of the story it's trying to tell or the situation it's trying to convey, anymore than a computer program giving you an interactive audio environment of a forest knows what a tree is.This means I tend to think of inequities as problems with the program not with the authoring of a peace of fiction, rather the way that you would blaime the programming specifically for control issues in a game, but blaime the over all conception of the design if say the atmosphere is jarring. Usually in Parser based If I have found myself trying! the correct solution but perhaps not in the language the author inten ded. You can cryticize the author and say "oh well they should've used correct synonims), but ultimately nobody can think of everything. After all it's fairly easy to have your game respond the same way to "enter door" and "in", slightly less easy to consider that someone using the term "prye door open with crowbar", might be the same as the author's intended (and rather clunky), "force crowbar into door" This is what I mean. I don't think of gamebooks as "limiting the player's freedom" sinse how limited they are depends upon the author, so much as giving clear program instructions on how to proceed in the game. Playing guess the verb or guess the phrase always feels to me not like finding the solution to a puzzle, so much as simply typing instructions into an unworking program. This is as I said why to me limited parser, ie, clear instructions is the best, sinse why muck about with all the alternatives of opening a stuck door with a crow bar when "use crowbar with door" will adequately express the player's intention to the program, and allow her/him to try their solution and continue with the actual interactive fiction unhindered.I do think your correct on your differences of opinion idea where obscure puzzles are concerned, sinse while I personally think authors who have these bizarre turns of logic as in the Infocom games simply frustrate my efforts to explore the world and interact meaningfully with the story, there isn't particularly any rational reason for why. However, even obscure puzzles are imho better with a limited Parser sinse if a player knows they can try alternatives, they're probably more likely to keep guessing rather than shrug and just put the game down to being overly obscure. I'll try to make the Bokurano Daibouken games more of a priority, sinse I do know several people have enjoyed the series. I do personally wish myself there was a friendlier method of translation into English that didn't need six different bits of software, copying to clipboard, changing your computer language and keyboard etc. That has nothing to do with adding to the Db though, there are actually many important games t o add, paladin of the skies, Audio defense, Nebula, Lords and knights, Deathmatch and goodness knows how many others. Accessible C++ Compiler
Accessible C++ Compiler Hello,I'm looking into C++, but have so far had issues find a totally accessible compiler/IDE. The primary issues that I'm currently having are finding a compiler wherein I can read any compilation errors that may arise, and also figuring out the most convenient way to read application output. I'm staring out with just basic console applications, making use of out and in for output and input, but JAWS doesn't particularly like reading content. The only way I've found thus far for reading them is to read the entire screen with insert b.So, can anyone recommend n IDE/compiler in which I can read the errors, and tell me what the best way would be to read the output from an application? Otherwise, you *have* to use VS 2008 or VS 2010, which means that you cant' use all the latest features.I am using cython to bind c++ code and find it completely OK for the job. Limitation about using certain version of MS compiler comes from the fact, that you have to use the same version of compiler which was used to build windows python distribution, and, therefore, is not cython-specific. The same would apply if you used boost::python or any other library/tool to develop python extensions.camlorn wrote:CFFI also has problems with Py2exe, at least if you're concerned about authorization.Frankly speaking, if you are concerned about authorizatio n - forget about python. Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman
Re: The contraversy of Mallenche, and its creator, Howard Sherman Mmm, I thought the whole point of leaving open the parser was that you *didn't* get the impression that you were trapped inside a limited mechanic? Obviously, the parser and the player disagree. I don't accept that limiting the player is the answer. No justification will ever convince me of the need to constrain the player for their own benefit. So what if it's true? It's still wrong. Yes Dark, you hit the nail on the head re motive miscalculation. You've clearly run into similar circumstances. Most recent example in Divided We Fall: if you as a Catholic nurse decide in favour of blackmail to reach your ends, offering to keep your company in exchange for better recognition, you become a willing prostitute. That's not what I asked for, and not what I wanted. I accept that life naturally proves ambiguous, but definitely not to that extent. And yes this is as much about good game design as anything, but I think it illustrates the problem of keeping a good story together while offering a limited selection of choices.I think this discussion once again says that different things work for different people. Re: a proposal, jaws lite shareware by freedom scientific hello guys!I think the same commands as the developers of NVDA were not implemented on purpose, to have the user did not decorate any q and a list of keys, facilitating learning software.NVDA is free, yes, but other things make it better than other readers. For example,JAWS and Window-Eyes install VideU interseptors and most other things are slow and heavy.NVDA is already light, fast, easy to use, configure and portable, plus other resourcesI think any screen reader is totally innovative, NVDA, jaws and window eyes copy resources from others. Re: accessible bitcoin client on windows
Re: accessible bitcoin client on windows Isn't the official client already accessible? It's just QT. If not, then of course there's always the command-line interface using RPC, which all clients should support. Re: Pontes Media Downloader - a friendly youtube downloader - version 2.0 Hello, againThanks to kool_turk, I\ve just coreected some minor bugs in Pontes Media Downloader that prevented downloading from some sites that are not officially supported by youtube-dl. If you are using the program only for big media servics such as youtube you do not need to install the revised version (2.0.5423)The revised version of the program can be found here URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=194103#p194103 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: A new sound art project I've created Thanks for that suggestion! O:-) I never tried this web site before. I know I asked this uestion beore, but I forgot the answer to it. Are royalty-free sounds basically free sounds obtained after you purchased a membership or something? I think that's how someone put it. Re: A new sound art project I've created Hi again, I'm bringing this topic to the forefront because I am trying to find sounds, and basically do it the same Omar was doing, by downloading and extracting YouTube videos.I'm trying to find sounds of X-ray machines, CAT scanners, PET and SPET Scannrs, EEG's, HEG's and MEG's, and the like. This might be a lot, but I was wondering if there are sounds like that. Most sounds I find are short and hard to find, the really good ones I mean.Since these sounds will be public domain, and as long as no one has any intention of selling them, I think we should be fine. The reason I'm saying this is because I'm thinking about putting together a speech production about a medical facility and I would need these souns for whatever the procedures they were carrying out. I already have a few of what I need, but I'm still looking for more.
