a question on python

Ahoy all.I am making my slow way across python, and this time better than I have previously.Perhaps its the better material I'm refering to, or all the scripting I have tried has helped me in understand certain things which I wasn't able to before. This is kind of game related, and kind of not. Its more of how would I go about doing x in python or any programming language type of question more than anything else.I have Written a utility in python that reads a file, which contains settlement logs from core-exilesa abbreviated output of which is as followsJun 15th 08:55 pm» Dragon: Wesbec Delivery (192) to Magnia / Set Fee: 103697 CR Jun 15th 06:47 pm» Achilleos: Wesbec Delivery (102) to Daray / Set Fee: 4776 CR Jun 15th 06:43 pm» Achilleos: Wesbec Delivery (152) to Quettin / Set Fee: 6340 CR Jun 15th 06:43 am» Dragon: Wesbec Delivery (200) to Furia Station / Set Fee: 105039 Jun 14th 05:54 pm» Korth: Wesbec Delivery (183) to Rosotika / Set Fee: 46576 CR Jun 14th 05:54 pm» Korth: Wesbec Delivery (180) to Sul-Rodet / Set Fee: 45812 CR There's a reason why I have the log as that long, bare with me.So far I have managed to make it take input of a filename, read lines in the file, determine which we want, discard which are not needed.the lines beginning with the symble » are the ones we are interested in.the word 1 or the second word as they'd say in python and other languages is the word in the lines we are interested in,along with the second last word.I.E Dragon, and the numbers before CRSo far I have managed to get the first word and the second last from each line and have the utility get second last words  percentage and print it out. What I'd like to do is, have the code read each line, and give me the total of the percentages of all dragons hauls, korths and so on.They won't be in order,as can be seen from the log above,I.E dragon appears once, then twice with another in between.I'm thinking I could achieve something like this with dictionaries, any ideas? suggestions? Thanks!grryf

No, you guys have fighters now. I added them in, you can buy them at your local shipyard. To protect those who don't wanna get shot at, and because i'm still working on fusion jumps, firing in the sol system is possible, however, to protect those who don't want to get shot at, you have to be past the range of 20 or -20 on any coordinate, as the game will not permit you to fire in that area.

assault_freak wrote:Could never wrap my head around writing out text for midi. Guess it's the same block that prevents me from programming... I can't manually write notes, velocity, length, etc. Makes it so much easier to play the music... I just don't know squat about playing keyboard, which is the most convenient midi source.Breaking my own rule and about to go on a tangent and derail the thread a bit. But why not? I also cannot wrap my head around programming, but mml and similar music text composition comes to me with only moderate effort. With enough practice with a particular system I can normally coax some fairly fun stuff from it. By contrast I've struggled for years to grasp programming and have just about given up, even with comparatively simple prospects like BGT. Bas
ically, I think what it comes down to is that people think in different ways. The more specifically you can narrow into your strengths and weaknesses, the better. While I can't be sure if a block for programming is the same as a block for music text, in my own case the two are completely unrelated. I think this is because programming is syntactical in the sense that you have to know a language and its structure, while MML is very linear in nature. The only time it isn't is if you explicitly specify as such, i.e. make an instrument or something and then call it up later for use. Different versions of MML do work differently though, and so that can be confusing if you don't have adequate documentation or you're not good at dealing with differing methods.A lot of what goes into MML writing is just knowing what you're getting into. MML is not a language you will use if you want to sound like a live band. That goal would be counterintuitive really. Often w
hat you will find is that timings and velocities and whatnot are pretty grid-like when writing in text, or indeed when writing with anything that isn't live input, simply because there is no easy way to do it otherwise. This is not to say that mml is bad... some tools do have randomizers to try and mitigate this deficiency, and you can still do a lot of advanced tricks to add pollish to even acoustically oriented tracks. So don't think of text composition as that generic cheap-sounding stuff, because while it often starts that way, it doesn't have to stay there. there is no doubt in my mind that having live input is easier on all fronts, and I wouldn't blame somebody for deciding writing music in a text file is too taxing. But all the same I do like it when people give it a shot. All in all, both methods have their strengths and weaknesses. Both open up opportunities. MML is a niche thing mainly for chiptunes but does open doors for midi as well. Using live input
like keyboards is almost exclusive to midi and does tend to sound more organic, and opf course if you use keyboards you have a lot of control over the organic nature, if you know how to edit with your sequencer and use things like quantize etc. Still, there is so much overlap between the two and I don't really subscribe to a viewpoint that holds that each method has its own specific purpose. Now, back to a less geeky topic. I'll be the first to share music here! How about that! But since the thread has some stuff in it, I figured why not? This is a chiptune remake for the Nes of the Super Liam level 1 music. I made this at the end of 2016. Here's the catch. A friend of mine also did his own chiptune cover while I was doing mine. After we were both done, we sent each other our covers, and we occasionally fight, in a friendly way of course, about whose is better. I've decided to upload both, so you can decide which you like better. They are simply call
ed version 1 and version 2, so you don't know who made which. If you do know because I showed you this already, please don't spoil it for everyone else; I will eventually post a message here saying which is mine. Get it here! IN the zip you will find NsF files as well as mp3s for those  who can't play NSF music. Here are some criticisms I have of both... yes I will criticize my own work here:Version1 drums are a bit overkill for my taste, while you can barely notice them in 2.Version 1 sounds more accurate but kinda has an overbearing quality if I can put it that way. 2 is easier on the ears but perhaps a bit boring and too floaty. So, have at it. Fight over the first actual music submission of the thread! LolFYI I would be interested in making other versions of this song, mainly because it's challenging but simple. So if I post a bunch
more versions for different chips, don't be too surprised. At present none are in the works but thinking about this made me want to go back and do stuff. Lol

An easier way to do it if you know regular expressions is to use a regex on the blocks of text you want to math. you can then loop through all of the matches saving values to a running total and print out the result.

That's related to the way he parses the text, which he didn't tell us. He just told us that he parses the text, which is nice and can be done in several elegant and fast ways, but also several dumb ways which might work, but need alot of calculation time. Regex is a nice and fast way to parse the lines and get the content you want, but it needs time to learn and not everyone knows about them. His question related to the way of saving the numbers and calculating the percentage out of them, this can be done easily by using dictionaries.

Re: Vocalizer Siri Voices For JAWS or NVDA

How do you extract the voice data from OS X and/or macOS? Ever since Lion, the voices have been stored in /System/Library/Speech/Voices/name.SpeechVoice/Contents/Resources as a single file called PCMWave. The data structure looks identical to the Macintalk data for voices like Alex. I always assumed these were incrypted somehow. It gets even stranger as the high quality Siri voices appear to use a completely different structure. For example, the folder /System/Library/Speech/Voices/NickySiri.SpeechVoice/Contents/Resources contains lots of files with names like adat, eyrie, etc. These files appear to have no file extension. If I look at /System/Library/Speech/Voices/NickyCompact.SpeechVoice/Contents/Resources I find a PCMWave file. I know I'm running Sierra, but these voices have always been packaged in this way.

Re: Questions about C++

jonikster,You ask all of these questions about can I do this or that in all of these different languages? The short answer is yes, unless you're talking about BGT. BGT has major limitations but, thats a post for a different topic. You can do everything you're asking in c++ or c#. I won't reiterate things people have already said and have already told you in other topics, but I would like to point something out that I think is a bit misunderstood. It is a big misunderstanding that programmers need to know lots of advanced math like calculus and beyond. While this is certainly a benefit, computer science programs don't make you take math for the math itself. Its problem solving. You need to know how to brake a problem up into little pieces to be able to solve the whole thing. You don't eat a huge pizza in one big bite, you sit down and eat little pieces off the ends. eventually if you are hungry enough, you might eat the whole thing. the same th
ing goes for games or any program you are making you don't write everything in one big chunk. you write the stuff for the player on this day. the second day you might do work on the sound. the third day you will do something else. This isn't math. its problem solving. This is the main thing they are meaning to teach you with all of the math related classes. that being said, there are somethings that require math. Player rotation and movement in an FPS is trigonometry. VisualStudio is correct to a certain point. you can ask the computer to calculate for you like a calculator. pow(), sin(), cos(), and tan() are all functions you can use in c++ or another language. But if you have know idea how to use them or how to apply them to solve the problem in your game, it does nothing for you. You need to be able to take all of the little pieces and be able to assemble them into a progressively larger and larger algorithm to eventually make up your whole program.Questio
ns are good, but when you're just throwing questions up here on the forum and they seem to be the same ones over and over and over, we wonder if you're actually learning any of this. When you're asking all of these questions, you aren't problem solving. many many of your questions can be answered with a very simple search in your favorite search engine of choice. I am searching how to do many things all the time. I'm reading people's answers and figuring out how I might adapt them into my program I'm writing. I don't feel like you have this mentality of proactive problem solving. This just makes the whole coding process much much much more difficult.did I mention programming is hard? it is very difficult. This isn't to scare you off, its just a word of warning. I've seen people tell you to just buckle down and learn a language. I would like to just reiterate that. All of this jumping back and forth between python, BGT, c++, an
d c# is just dead time when you could be learning. sit down and devote yourself to a language, even if it is BGT. if you sit down and actually learn the intricacies of a language, who knows you might actually begin to understand pointers.

username/appdata/local/colors/savegame.ini   is what you're looking for.Based on what you're describing, it's almost as if the object isn't being created. Perhaps it's being created on another part of the map as well. I will be adding some stuff but Game Maker's most recent update screwed up my graphics a bit so I have to check what's going on with that as well.

If I recall correctly, in iOS 10 the camera app will give you feedback about any faces in the picture, how much of the picture it takes up, and possibly where in the picture it is. So have you tried just taking a selfie using just the built in camera app and it's feedback?

Re: sharing thoughts and remixes/transcriptions of audio game music

Yeah... maybe I just never spent enough time trying to figure out a particular MML system. I've just always been a fan of live input wherever possible, even though I'm not a keyboard player. I wouldn't be opposed to trying it, though. It's not really the fact that I think it would sound cheap or less real, simply a matter that writing things out by hand is indeed taxing compared to simply hammering out notes. But as has been said, everyone thinks differently. lol

I'm going to post this question in a separate message because just adding it to my previous message doesn't seem to be getting any results.Does anyone know the URL for the Amazon Alexa web site that I can use as an alternative to the iOS app?The iOS app seems to be working OK now, but using a full keyboard rather than the phone's on screen one would be far better.Last time I tried it back in February, it crashed my browser, hopefully that has improved too.

Re: sharing thoughts and remixes/transcriptions of audio game music

I definitely would encourage you to try live input first with a sequencer. There's more practical use for it really. No matter what I"m doing, sequencing, writing in a text file, I always use a keyboard to sketch with. And when I say keyboard, I use the term loosely; I often write without a real keyboard, using an on-screen one which some people might think of as a joke. But I've gotten really efficient with it. If all my keyboard were destroyed and all i had was a laptop, I wouldn't be unable to sequence. Besides, I'm such a perfectionist that the original performance I recorded hardly ever gets used because I edit it so much after it's been recorded. I know that not everyone will be doing that, but for me, just having something there to sketch with is infinitely better than not. Of course being good at your instrument is key, and if you aren't, then that is indeed discouraging.

Oh, live input is already what I'm doing and will continue to do. I don't see myself using mml any time soon, just because of the fact that the DAW I use, like most, allows me to edit notes right there on the spot anyway. Really, my struggle is motivating myself to get a controller, relearn my basic piano fundamentals and have fun with it and a decent library o sounds which I have via kontakt 5.

Unrelated to the question, but figured I'd comment.Instead of trying and excepting everything, then insisting the file doesn't exist, you might want a more straight forward method, such as os.path.isfile, alternatively just print error. Really small thing, but it could prevent a lot of pissed off users trying to remember if they used there medication that day.

This weeks missions will get you 10800FM, but the other 5000FM is asking for a lot. Anyway, lets get into the missions.-1: Sakura's Urgent Errand: This is probably the easiest "cryptic" mission we've seen so far. All you have to do is launch the epilogue in Karin's character-specific story mode.If you've already completed her story, this will take you a matter of seconds. If not, you can play through Karin's story fairly quickly. Either way, 5,000 FM awaits you.2: Perform a counter 10 times: All you have to do is score a counter hit in a real match (no training mode) 10 times. Doing so will net you 300 FM.3: Play a trial: Jump into any of the game's combo trials to earn 500 Fight Money.4: Win 10 ranked matches: This one is self-explanatory. Earn 10 wins in ranked match and you'll earn the other half of the Fight Money bulk this week (another 5,000).-There you all go!

Not sure if you guys know this but, the front facing camera is on the left side of the phone. It's a little bit left of the earpiece. Just because you think you've got your phone straight in front of you, the camera app still won't get your face, because you actually need to move the phone a little more to the right, because of where the front facing camera is placed. With that out of the way, there is an app that could help you out called, SelfieX.This app allows you to take selfies with the back facing camera, with the help of a voice guide. I'm not too sure on how well the pictures turn out but, I do know that it does work.HTH.

ist by using [].If you want to sort your dict (and all you are doing is counting the occurrences of names), you can do the following, continuing from the example above:from operator import itemgetter# this returns a list of tuples; the name from the dict is the first item, the value is the second# from least to greatestsorted_dict = sorted(names_dict.items(), key=itemgetter(1))# from greatest to leastsorted_dict = sorted(names_dict.items(), key=itemgetter(1), reverse=True)Hope this helps

Re: Beta Tester Application for "A Hero's Call"

well I got my response and I respect your decision. I guess it would be too long and complicated to send individual emails to people but 4 people apart from myself all got the same stock reply.using a phraise along the lines of: "you do not meet the skill requirements we are looking for.I would be interested to know exactly what those skills are as at least 2 of us who got rejected have a lot of previous testing experience, used to play visual RPG games and have a good grounding in audio games too. I suspect it comes down to people who didn't back the kickstarter project being put to the back of the list.if this is the case, I can well understand why that would be the case but it could also come back to bite you. I wasn't aware of the project when that was going on and I'm guessing a lot of others weren't either. but giving places to loyal followers who donated seems to me like what you will get is what you don't want and t
hat is people who are so desperate to play the game, testing will not be an issue.anyway, I still support the project and I can't wait for it to be available. just had to throw my thoughts in.

That will depend on the specific iPhone model. If I recall what I've heard correctly, on the iPhone 5s the back facing camera is 8 megapixels while the front facing camera is only 1.5 megapixels. On the iPhone SE the back facing camera is 12 megapixels while the front facing camera is only 2 megapixels. If this is for something like a facebook profile picture, the front facing cameras will produce a detailed enough picture.

You are right. I keep getting them mixed up.To my mind, front facing means just that, the camera is facing forward as you look at the device's display. Or put another way, the back facing camera is on the display side of the device because it is looking back at you as you look at the device's display. It is, unfortunately a way of thinking of them that is very persistent. I'll eventually get it right. In the meantime, I'll go back and fix that message.

Re: About pyglet

While it's true that there aren't lots of python audiogame examples, there are a few. Also, as stated above, part of being a programmer is... Well... Programming. If you can't find an example that does what you want, then get your hands dirty and start experimenting. Find something that works and keep optimizing it, adding features as you want / need them.To get you started, here are a few files from a game I'm working on. These are basics (screens and menus), so feel free to modify them; they assume you have a game class, an instance of that class with a sound manager (I use a custom libaudioverse wrapper, but you can easily make this use pyglet's sound functions), and an output object with an output method (I use accessible_output2 for this). It also assumes you've made certain choices (on_keys instead of motion events for scrolling, game instance with an instance of screen stack, etc). Also, while you should feel free to modify th
is code so it fits your game, if you leave it unmodified please don't claim that it is entirely yours; I don't expect any kind of attribution, but I really hate when people plagiarize. That being said, on to the code:# screens/__init__.py# Basic screen modulefrom pyglet.window import keyclass Screen(object):    def __init__(self, game, escapable=True, *a, **k):        """Base class that represents one screen in the game;        this can be a menu, inventory list, normal gameplay, etc.        When a screen is made active, it's 'activate' method gets run. Just because you backed the kickstarter that was no indication that you would get picked. I did as well, and didn't get picked and I'm completely happy with that. The email gave me a response as to why, and that's all I care about. Joseph got back to us, we didn't get picked, we wait like everyone else. Move on.

hiat tomecki dude, you don't need to have your ship destoroyed. once you create a character you sell and rebuy the ship. and that's a good thing cause you don't lose money and you will be ok with your ship too.

Re: Creating Accessible Magic the Gathering

Let's try that again. It seems to have lost my entire post!I highly recommend googling "programming MTG card effects" or "programming TCG card effects". There are a lot of posts out there and you may be able to pull together some ideas from them.Note that I've never programmed this kind of thing myself, but I've done some research into it while considering making an accessible digital version of a card game called Sentinels of the Multiverse. I'll refer to it in the rest of the post as examples. The basic idea is that you want to be able to reuse things as much as possible. Think about what core actions or effects exist in the game. For example, in Sentinels, and I suspect in Magic, there are effects like gaining/losing hit points, increasing/decreasing damage dealt, increasing/decreasing damage taken, being immune to certain types of damage, etc. You want to code the effects, not the cards themselves. Keywords can be useful in
that they might determine some rule that the game needs to keep track of. For example, Sentinels has the "ongoing" keyword to mean that a card's effects remain active until it is trashed. If you've ever played Tactical Battle, looking at how the game allows people to create their own units, maps, etc, is a good way to understand what you're trying to achieve. Ideally, you should be able to write a custom card with effects that are already implemented in the code, and have it work smoothly with the other existing cards.I don't know what you're programming experience is, so I won't make assumptions about your abilities. If you're determined enough, and you start off small, getting a few cards to work, and expanding from there, I don't see why you couldn't get somewhere with this. At the very least, it's a great learning experience.Sorry if this was kind of vague and rambling. Since I don't have speci
fic experience with implementing this type of program, I don't want to give you misleading information.

I want to reply to SirBadger's questions, not because I feel that we have any obligation to justify our questions, but because I want to make sure that what we said isn't unintentionally misrepresented. First off, yeah, we did a stock reply as it would have taken an obscene amount of time to write individual replies. But we didn't specifically say that if you didn't get chosen, you didn't have the skill requirements we were looking for. In fact I made a point to say that several of those who weren't chosen would make great testers. So yes, because of numbers we did have to turn down testers who have skills or experience that would lend themselves toward testing. Why decisions were made varied from person to person because every person brought something a little different to the table. Maybe one person would be fairly comparable to a tester already selected, but with slightly less experience. Maybe one person had lots of experience testing apps
but not so much experience testing games, or lots of experience playing fighters and less experience playing exploration-oriented games. Basically we took the applications, narrowed them down to all those we think would make good testers, and then selected from that bunch to give ourselves the most well-rounded team possible. Priority was given to those who backed the project, but it wasn't always a deciding factor, or at least not the sole deciding factor.

Re: VPN's

@Green Gables Fan,A VPN (virtual private network) is just a network you connect to for sake of privacy.  You cannot be tracked by your ISP or any agency in terms of where on the net you go, or anything related to your behavior online.A VPS (virtual private server) is just a remote server you can operate to do things you can't otherwise do on your home computer, usually for hardware limitations and stable broadband reasons.  Linux is unrestrictive and offers many updates, while Windows Server is (from what I understand) full of security holes and not nearly as popular.  That's just from what I know.  There are plenty of other reasons.  I host a VPS to do basic things like host an Apache2 web server and a TeamTalk server.HTHLuke

Re: Creating Accessible Magic the Gathering

Hi, thank you for the tips. I am working on getting my bachelors in computer science, but I just finished my first year of programming classes. I have two more years left. I will take a look with google to see if I can dig some things up. That is what I was thinking, there are a lot of commonalities between all of the cards, and a lot of the effects are the same on different cards. There are some strange effects sometimes that really aren't shared with other cards, but that is not the norm. I haven't built a game yet, that I can say I am proud of, and this didn't seem terribly hard if I can figure out how to handle the cards. It is complicated, but I think with in my skill level. I primarily wanted to use java to build this because that is the language I am learning in my classes for the most part, so I know java the best. I also felt that object oriented programming would fit this type of project well, however I am running into an issue because java doesn
39;t allow for a child class to have two or more parents. I think the way I was designing it may have worked, but I don't think I should use java if I am going to approach this problem using object oriented programming. Main problem is that I have a card class, and all card cards have names, then I have a class called permanence, which all permanents can be tapped, then I have a creature class, and the creature class has various properties, and finally I would create a class for each creature, passing in its properties up the hierarchy, however creatures can be more than one card type, so I would have to make the creature I am working on extend the Creature class as well as say the Artifact class, which I can't do in java. Sure I can use interfaces, but I can't get the same effect as I am wanting with classes. I think I need a different language, or a different approach.I started looking at BGT, and I have a couple questions on that which I will post in a diffe
rent thread, I was also just thinking of learning C++. I know that it can do what I want and more, but I took a C class at one point and I did not like it. I am going to have to learn it for my degree eventually though.TJ Breitenfeldt

Questions on BGT

Questions on BGT

Hi, so I finally thought I would pick up BGT, I have not built an game yet that is something for me to be proud of, so I thought that BGT may be a better place for me to get some experience in building games before I start trying to peace together a game in another language.I had some questions though, I tried emailing the developer, and he did not respond though. So here we go:Does anyone know how BGT is able to implement the method speak_wait() in the tts_voice class? This is a method that would be very helpful in many of my other projects using pygame and accessible_output2. Would it be possible to create a method for accessible_output2 that did this?I have not tried yet using the features of BGT to use NVDA or Jaws, but I would hope that BGT had a similar method in those cases as well?I have not found out how to make jaws or NVDA speak yet. Where is thatlocated in the documentation? I saw some where in there that I have todrag the NV
DA dll into my project before I can call to NVDA, but Icould not find the class on that. The one thing that I noticed after I built my first game and compiledit into an executable release build, was that it was taking a unusualamount of time to run the program. When I would click on theexecutable, it will take several seconds, probably over half a minuteto a minute before the game opens. Do you know why this is? I am a littleconcerned about this as I build larger games, is there anything I cando about this delay? Thanks,TJ Breitenfeldt

I personally don't think Joseph has to justify anything. He clearly said in the first post: Please allow 1–2 weeks for us to go through applications and get back to you, and understand that, depending on how many applications we receive, not everyone who applies will be able to participate in testing the game.I didn't make it on to the team, and honestly I'm all the more excited to be able to play the finished product.
