Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018
Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018 My parents have some free cinema tickets and since my lady and I read the book recently we wouldn't mind seeing it. on the other hand, I confess the book was only "okay" at best. The main character was actually rather annoying, the implication that basically %90 of people with an interest in geek culture are overweight young men with no prospects, quite odd, especially for someone who rp'd for 7 years with three married couples and is married to a lady who probably understood as many references in ready player one as I did, albeit with her it was the 80's music, while with me it was the computer games.I also do agree with the cryticism that basically the main character was a mary sue of the first order, and a pretty giant one at that given he automamtically succeeds at everything! all of the time.I think though my biggest beef with the book is that while it perported to be a celibration of 80's culture, it struck me far more as a celibration of those bits of 80's culture which earnist cline happened to personally like. Some of this was down to which continent, he was on for example any Uk 80's geek would of course mention doctor who and Knightmare, See good old wikipedia for details, however other of it seemed very selective. For example, Sega and nintendo only got the vaguest of name checks, and street fighter 2, a child hood icon of mine barely got one mention. I also thought a lot of the time he basically ran down to mentioning things and going "hay look! this is good! you like this!" only really in the joust section did he actually deal with 80's and do something interesting with it, in a lot of other sections of the book it was basically just like a list "I watched heman and thundercats gobots and transformers and startrek tng and firefly and babylon 5 (for some odd reason)"Nope, it wasn't a bad book, but the cryticism that it's basically just nostalgia (and rather specific nostalgia at that), with little by way of plot or character and a rather adolescent theme to it seems pretty legitimate to me. Some people have actually called it twilight for boys, which seems pretty accurate to me really. Not that I won't see the film, and I'll probably read the sequel;, but I doubt very much I'll be reading ready player one again or going too loopy over the idea. Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging Hi. Well Alexa does seem to be fixed in terms of being interuptable now which helps. It wasn't so much reviews of other games as the constant requests to write a five star review, or of developers to go and want me to try one of their other games (doubly annoying given that Amazon's silly geo blocking policy often means said other games aren't even America anyway). Either way let me know when you've updated thorn hill and my lady and I will be glad to give it a try, ditto with anything else you come up with. But i can tell that the combat system didn't change all that much, apart from the extra abilities wich can be learned. Nothing much to tactics i have to admit. Woodcutting is something wich you can unlock, the fishing system wich you suggested at release of rough beta 2 still needs a bit of testing, to make sure it doesn't get to difficult, but not to easy either But glad the video sounds good Greetz mike URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=357096#p357096 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging
Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging Hi.For me personally a game needs to make a fiew things right.First is the general atmo of the game, with most games, I just have the feeling of playing these and not be a part of the storie. For me, this includes a natural sounding environment depending on the situation, like if you are in a town, forest, space station and so on.Second is the music. I have to be honest here, in audiogames, most music for me feels just plane and not really well chosen for the situation. I know, the music depends on the current scene, but still, most games which for example have classical arangements sound like they are composed with a cheap electronic piano.I myself am a fan of hard hitting, powerfull orchestral scores from composers like Hans Zimmer, epic score, Tomas Bergersen, imediate music, globus and so on, peaces of music which have the quality to let a shiver run down your spine if you hear them, A heroes call is a good example on how music should be done.Second is the gameplay, as Dark already stated, most audiogames are just a sequence of reaction type mini games. Also, when it comes to fighting, it's mostly a one button mashing, no attack patterns or combos, no attack variations or different attacks with different keys and so on.The storie also plays a big role, how is the general storie, does the game have memorable characters which trigger different emotions when you interact with them or are they just shells without any notable traits?Greetings Moritz. Re: Questions about England
Re: Questions about England @Shotgun, yeah, as I said when I wrote post 28 in This topic which I actually did write while living in the states three months prior to getting married, there are definitely good and bad things, although unfortunately the climate over there and a lot of things Donald Trump is doing aren't sitting well with the rest of the world right now which is giving America a much less friendly reputation, I recently heard of a lady who'd lived in florida for 18 years but moved back to Britain America was prooving much less friendly than it has been, - heck family friend of ours who is the paralimpic canooing had a connecting flight that changed in Atlanta, and was not allowed to change planes because she'd been to the middle east, of course she'd been to the bloody middle east, she's a bloody paralympic canooing instructor! @Angel, it depends upon where you go. I will say in Britain on average people are more reserved than in the states or europe that is true, equally just because English people don't go around saying "I love you" or "good morning friend!" or being particularly extravogant doesn't mean people are necessarily unfriendly. My lady actually said one thing she's had to get used to is the fact that dry or sardonic humour is a lot more common over here than it is in the states, so often people will sound far more grim than they mean to be.For example, I once saw a Jordi friend of ours with her daughter (said girl was about twelve or thirteen). The daughter was in a severely bad mood, she got in the car and slammed the door. Mother said nothing but drove off. A minute or two later mother said in a decidedly grim tone. "Oh by the way pet! if you slam that door again, I'll rip your face off" If you'd heard this without the context, you might think said mother was the most evil person imaginable and you'd be looking at child abuse (her tone was very grim), but the daughter's response was to laugh.Again, if your not familiar with British culture, and more specifically Jordies who go in for that sort of harsh humour, could pick things up severely wrongly. As with any culture, you need to live here a bit to pick up the nuances. Hi.Multiple things. At steve, yeah I remember the Nuton, haven't used that on my own though, just heard from people that it wasn't all that good.@Assault freak, you know, I am still sticking to apple as my phone provider because, from the latest experiences I had with Android, this isn't the system for me.I have the most problems with the responsivness of talkback, problems while web browsing on the phone, and the general problem of viruses getting to you easier than if you would use an apple device.I know, there are Viruses and hacking methods for Apple devices, but when you look at the genral market, the hackers, virus developers and so on concentrate on the Android user base.If there would be an alternative which has the same or a better screen reader than Apple and if the phone has features which would interest me, a change of phone brands would be an option.Greetings Moritz. Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging
Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging SwankyGoose, I have played thorn hill with the adaptations. I do like the sounds and the extra additions (the dun dun dun!" when you smell a monster made me laugh. My only comment though is that now you included sounds you could probably trim the game's events a little. for example you don't need to tell the player "you shoot an arrow" when you hear the woosh sound of it launching and the player has just said "shoot at cave 14" In the same way, I like the idea of the missed arrow waking the monster, but why not have an echoing clunk sound? (I'm pretty sure you could find one relatively easily), that way you'd shoot the arrow, here a "wooosh! clunk!" and then "oh no! you woke the monster" ditto with a sound for falling down a pit.(a crunching sound for getting eaten would be amusing as well, though I don't know how easy that might be to implement). I'm also not exactly sure on the bat sound, since you hear a gravel walking sound but not the actual bat? That seems a little odd to me, again if you could run across a bat sound that could be helpful.I think the sounds combined with an adjective or two for each cave would make the game nicely atmospheric, after which you could consider some gameplay expantions if you wanted, or move on to another game.Btw, one game I've always fancied is a fantasy style board game which mixed minimal rpg elements with random dice rolling and calculated risk, alla talisman or dark tower. My lady played dark tower as a child and really enjoyed it and I'm sorry I missed it and my brother is a huge talisman fan although as with many things there is no accessible version. Something like that might be a fun addition to Alexa, especially with the popularity of fantasy board games these days.@Simba agreed on music often providing atmosphere, I'm also a huge fan of film score, James Horner, John williams etc, not to mention more recently Debby Wiseman, however really amazing music isn't something you can just pick up, although it'd be nice if more indi musicians from outside the community got involved with audiogames, heck with a favourite graphical game series of mine, the Turrican series, (exploration platform shooters), there are musicians devoted to just! composing music for indi custom made levels, indeed I suspect many would be glad to help with audiogame music.I'm not sure about attacks and combos though, since not every game has to play like a beatemup. The main problem a lot of audio action games is simply one of being a little too straight forwardd with controls and attacks. You press forward your character moves forward at a fixed speed, you let go, your character stops instantly, you hit attack, your character attacks and anything in range gets whacked. That's not however how most graphical games, even 2d platformers from the nineties work. Look at original marrio brothers (still one of the best put together games of all time). you press forward, and marrio doesn't just walk at a fixed speed, he starts slowly then accelerates until he's at full speed. He also has a stopping distance, meaning that if your running towards a pit or an enemy, can't just let go of the forward button. Marrio's jumps are similarly mechanically complex. if you tap the jump button he goes up only a small way. if you hold it he jumps higher. Then of course you hold forward or back in mid air while marrio is jumping which dictates the arc of his jump. So if you just want a little one block hop you tap jump while holding right, while if you want a high jump that doesn't go far to the right you hold jump but tap right, while if you want a long jump over a wide arc you hold both buttons, plus of course, how far marrio jumps also affects his stopping distance, meaning that frequently you can clear an obstacle, but run straight into an enemy if your not careful. And we haven't even mentioned the run button yet, which not only makes marrio run faster and jump higher, but also increases his stopping distance to the point that frequently you'll need to tap backwards after a run to avoid marrio skidding all over the place, plus of course Mario's taller, thinner brother Luigi, though he jumps higher and runs faster is even worse for stopping distance. There is no earthly reason why! an audio 2D side scroller couldn't have complex movement mechanics, even if showing objects vertically would need to be done with a bit more care, heck there is no earthly reason why a first person game couldn't have these sorts of movement mechanics (remember those jumps in quake). And all of this is before we get onto attacks, since manifestly if your swinging a sword you need to calculate the time it takes you to swing the sowrd, the range of the sword vs the distance of your enemy etc. The same goes for bullets, from a projectile weapon indeed in a game like old space invaders it was tracking the speed of your bullets vs the movements of the invaders that made thing
Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018
Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018 All fair points dark. There is so much that could had been done to make the plot so much better. One of the things worth noting is that in the book, no one really dies if you don’t count the one or two who does. I know they do within the game, but you are lead in to believing that IOI will kill to win and vary few really does die. All I can think of is that scene at the beginning where the bomb goes off and that time in the book where someone was thrown off of a balcony. In a way, the a lot of things could, in theory, be cut and we still can have a good movie. Still though, it is worth one read through, but beyond that is questionable URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=357101#p357101 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018
Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018 I'm with Dark on this one. I thought The VR gaming aspect was pretty well done, and there was a good story buried somewhere in among the eighties references, but agree with Dark that the central character was way too much of a smart arse. I really turned against him in the scene where he and his friend humiliated the slightly obnoxious guy by out-geeking him with their better memorisation of eighties film wiki-facts. What they actually did was out-obnoxious him. So it was hard to carry on when I really didn't much like the main character, and was never a fan of eighties pop culture either. I was a teen in the eighties, and the people I was hanging around with didn't think much of the music and fashion at the time. If you were an ordinary working-class straight male, there was not a lot to identify with in eighties pop culture. It was all hair-spray and poncy boys going on about their delicate little hearts and how fragile they are. This is why lad culture emerged in the nineties: it was a backlash, and they went way too far the other way. I thought all the eighties themed stuff came across as kitchy, and was ultimately a cop out and saved the author the trouble of having to invent a pop culture for a period that hadn't happened yet. Re: Chinese swordsmen games Lingyun immortal Brigade
Re: Chinese swordsmen games Lingyun immortal Brigade I am sorry for this post, this is only mine opinion, you can disagree with itSituation from before a momentI have asked the dev if I couldn't translate the game to english and host the server in the west, using my own! VPS server. What response I got?Dev: How much profit this server and the english localisation would generate?Me: Honestly, I don't know, because I don't know how many players would be interested.Dev: Fuck it, thenReally? Is this the response the developer should give to a player, who just wants to help? Really? Say whatever you want, but I won't be playing this, even though the game is good.Or no, I will be playing, but only on my mobile, because I have no other games to play.Fuck it, then.I remember talking to ROTK's developer. Do you remember his response? Now we're good friends. I don't know what I thought that time, that 90% of chinese devs are like that? Re: Questions about England
Re: Questions about England The term Jordy refers to people in the northeast of England around the area of Newcastle, durham, and Northumbria. It has a very distinctive accent and a rather unique culture, see Wikipedia's article on the subject It is also spealt Geordie that is g e o r d i e but that spelling doesn't play nice with screen readers so I use the phonetic spelling instead. I suspect in Tng they just wanted to keep their tradition of naming engineers after people who live in the north of the British isles, after all you had commander "scot" followed by "jordi" By this progression the engineer in ds9 should've been called something like commander Brummy or Lieutenant scouser :d. Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018
Re: ready player one In theaters March 29, 2018 Interesting Flacus you mention the geek off scene. That struck me very much as the sort of flamewar I usually have to sort out on forums, needless to say if I'd! been looking at that virtual chat room I probably would've slapped everyone, the blameless parsifal included with mod warnings . Actually in that sense it struck me that the book was very modern and not in a good way since I've noticed shallow, arsy male characters something of a trend. it's likely a reaction against your aukward nice guy heroes, but not a welcome one, indeed these days it seems that vaguely decent male characters are at a premium, eveyone is either an arse hole, an anxt machine, or so squeaky clean over virtuous its ridiculous, often they're some combination of one or the other or all! of these. Whatever happened to people who are you know, just vaguely decent and trying to do the right thing and mess up occasionally? I'm afraid to me what is a little more worrying is the success of ready player one resting entirely on its pop culture routes with little to no actual writing to back it up. harry potter had great characterisation if not always the standard of writing (especially when the first few books are edited to within an inch of their lives), Hungar games actually had a better over all writing quality and great world though not half as tight plotting. However Ready player one, if you remove all the nostalgia factor just doesn't have much to recommend it on a character or plot level which is pretty sad when there are much better writers with much less recognition or success out there. Re: trying to find a game called City Master
Re: trying to find a game called City Master Moderation!I'm going to start off by saying on a slightly related note here especially to the topics you were posting, I have not heard from Sebby for a while, hoping he's OK.I do not know what's going to happen about Desafio yet, but for this particular situation I am going to do the following, and it might seem kind of basic or even soft, but as this is the first clone in a while I don't know if I need to be so draconian.Firstly I'm closing the topic.Secondly, due to the way Ernie has acted I am not, repeat not, banning him, especially when I am talking about his first post, post 5. Thing is, he admits it's a clone, but then actually goes one further and thinks about wanting the topic closed there and then due to the situation. What I should have done is came in much quicker and asked him and the dev to discuss it, and then if both parties agreed, indeed closed it there and then. IN fact, I'd say Ernie was rather honorable in the situation. I actually think this whole mess could have gotten worse he could have just stayed and said oh hay here's a new game to play. Also, as a thank you I am thumbs upping the following people:@Ironcross32, @Cartertemm, and @braille0109. Thank you for helping me to come to this decision, and also tracking down existing Ultrapower topics and the like. As it stands I do not know if it's a good idea to be so draconian anymore, but if things get out of hand with cloning, you can bet I'll put my foot down harder. I honestly don't see clones making too much of a comeback though, but what do I know. Re: Recording simultaneously from two soundcards?
Re: Recording simultaneously from two soundcards? @Prajwal, exactly what I was gonna say. When it comes to recording with a pc, Virtual Recorder is boss. Especially if you wanna record both pc input and your own voice. Streaming computer audio to somewhere like teamtalk or something like that, however, i'm not sure of that. My old computer had something called Stereo Mix, which captured the sound from my internal soundcard, it was basically a virtual microphone but it didn't work well with USB headsets so yeah. But with Virtual Recorder I can record stuff even with an USB headset connected. It has a virtual audio capture device thingy, which relies on something called Windows Wasapi, but am not sure of it's exact uses. But yeah, for recording with both your computer's sounds and your own voice, Virtual Recorder would be your best bet. I already did some game recordings with it, and it works like a charm. Re: Chinese swordsmen games Lingyun immortal Brigade pay to play micro transactions are nothing new in the gaming world by this point, Battlefield 2 anyone? Seriously just go look at Metal Gear survive, you have to pay 10 bucks for an extra save slot. Actually there's so many wacky transactions in that game. Whenever/if I ever develop a game I'll be sure to put a pay to pause feature in there. Yeah ROTK probably would've been more fun personally if it literally wasn't just, do this 50 times to get to the next level. Between that and the less than stable connection, not to mention all the trouble a lot of english players had trying to get it to work, it's no surprise it never really took off here. Re: adventure at c stage Remnant V 3.0 Final rC is now released! Hi,I am absolutely loving Remnant so far, on chapter 2.However I do have a question about the builder, in fact a few, but I'll start with the most important one for me, although I am wondering how advanced this is.Firstly how do you create a hub world that lets you press enter to go to different stages?Yet, the second part of that is, teleport pad that didn't change the music yet took you to a different location, and then when back to the hub the teleporter vanished?Of course there's chapter announcements and things but honestly that can come later. The hub is the thing that intrigues me at the moment, and I am hoping it's something I can practice with, without having to unlock too much. Re: Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection Hi.@Mitch: If it's like another game that is also developed by Digital Eclipse, Mega Man Legacy Collection, when you complete a game, nothing happens, since the collection is basically just the six Mega Man NES titles packaged into a single package. So, if SF 30th Anniversary Collection is basically the original arcade ROMs, which most likely it is knowing them, I don't see the aforementioned things you described being in this. Sure, you do get things like an art gallery and a music player, but nothing else.@nidza07: Here are the differences between the various versions of SFIV.1. Street Fighter IV: This is the original version of Street Fighter IV, or Vanilla Street Fighter IV as most people call it.2. Super Street Fighter IV: This adds several characters not present in the original SFIV, including Adon, Cody, Dee Jay, Dudley, Guy, Ibuki, Makoto, T. and Hawk, as well as two new characters, Hakan and Juri.3. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition: In addition to being a minor balance update to SSFIV, this version adds in Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu, and Oni as playable characters.4. Ultra Street Fighter IV: This version adds Poison, Hugo, Rolento, and Decapre to the list of characters. It also adds in several new moves for a few characters as well. Re: How to get rid of AVG free Edition?
Re: How to get rid of AVG free Edition? This is why I'm going to be very happy once the Spring Creator's Update comes out. We'll be able to use Narrator in safe mode, no playing with the registry required. I can only assume that sound in safe mode will be activated for everything then, because surely it can't be limited to just Narrator. That wouldn't make any sense. I'm actually impressed that Microsoft made this a feature so soon. For now though, you can grab the registry files here:https://www.dropbox.com/s/6q9uld7b4ud3o … e.zip?dl=1 URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=357152#p357152 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Warsim, text based randomly generated stratogy
Re: Warsim, text based randomly generated stratogy actually things are going pretty well. I didn't tell you guys or rather I forgot to post my last post. I died suddenly I think because I took the coin of fate and it came up heads whatever that meant, it was hard to tell.I'm on a new game though and am doing even better, right now fighting a war on two fronts with some Kappa and the rebels. I'd like a little clarification on a few things though.1. exactly how does combat rating fit in. Some of my enemies are non-negotiable boogiemen and their strongest guys are combat rating 658. Nobody I'm around can put anything even remotely close into the field, some vampires coming closest at a distant 270. The boogieman army though is tiny so can you overwhelm monstrously high combat ratings with numbers? There are only 246 boogiemen in all right now and only their 3rd-tier guys are really scary.2. I'm still using the crappy diplomat you start the game with but thinking of switching him out. Two of the countries are said that diplomatic relations with them are impossible becaue of their uncivil and savage natures. The vampire country I can do some stuff with but they are xenophobic and they say they won't talk to me, though those options such as trade routes and stuff are theoretically selectable, they just say "They are very xenophobic and won't talk to you' if I try to do any of them. Could any of you explain?also, how does vassalization work? I know you can do it but don't quite get the mechanics of how you do it. Do you take all their land and then say to the defeated enemy, "Be my vassals?" or do you have to do it when they still have lands left, also, if you do, do you have to fight some crazy battle with like all of their remaining army? Sorry but I want some other types of soldiers so I want to get their weird stuff, even though the gnomes and goblins kind of suck.also, I've been exploring, but will other independent kingdoms like the 5 everyone starts with that are randomized be replaced when I'm done with them or is the game over when my current enemies are gone. I know there are some forts and mines I can take over, but they don't quite work like the countries, goblin nations, and rebels. which I think are the coolest parts of the game. I was wondering that because one of the races they said was in the game when it was building the world is a race I haven't seen yet. I don't remember what it was, but it isn't goblins, boogiemen, humans, kappas, vampires, or gnomes, which is all the races I've seen. Re: Accessing the internal disk of Digital Book Players
Re: Accessing the internal disk of Digital Book Players I got it. For anyone who may be having problems figuring this out, yes, there is a sticker on the sticker. There are, in fact, two stickers. One closer to the numbers on the keypad, and the other closer to the sleep and rewind/play/fast forward buttons. The sticker closer to the numbers is what you want, and it's pretty thick. You'll know it's the one because it covers that entire area, and has another smaller sticker at its center.Having done this procedure, and realizing just how dependent the Stream (or Trek) is on that card has once again amazed me. IDK, amazed isn't really the word. I've seen it for years. But...Stepping slightly back from the architectural differences that may exist, and the polishing that has undoubtedly been done, the stream is basically a Pi 3 with a battery, keypad, speaker and mic! And in the case of the Trek, including a GPS receiver and vibration motor. For $400-$700?Yeah, I know. HW is a company just like any other, working with the small AT market, and this is nothing new. But... Still!Anyway, I'll shut up. Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging
Re: Opinions on what makes an audio game engaging People have been saying ever since I first was on this forum that audiogames need to be "like mainstream games" by which they usually mean have hyper complex beatemup mechanics with 30 different characters, all with move sets or varying mechanics, or have super hundreds of hours of branching stories with random content, thousands of monsters etc. one thing I'm increasingly thinking though, is that before we even touch the idea of resources, audiogames frequently don't get right the very basic things. A game like Marrio brothers can be hugely engaging now, heck look at the popularity of arcade type titles on the Iphone. The problem though is it needs mechanics that challenge a player's judgement and learning skills, rather than just their quick reactions as I outlined above. if audiogames can't sort out the basic mechanics, then even if an audiogame were! produced with a mainstream style budgit and resources, you still would have essentially a very complex, wonderful sounding boppit, heck to an extent that was what happened with games like pappasangre, and why I'm so eager for potential audiogame devs to have a history of what has been tried before and some ideas of basic game design concepts so that we can! move forward with the resources we have. Re: Questions about America
Re: Questions about America At Ironcross, that was glorious, thumbs up.Now let me clarify that beautiful post with a slightly more serious perspective. I disagree that women don't want to have serious relationships until they're 30. First of all, that's an arbitrary number. Second of all, I think that what sometimes happens is that some women claim to be more serious about someone than they actually are, just to escape the stigma of casual sex. If they tell the world how in love they are, they can blame those same people if things go wrong. But I definitely don't think this is the story all or even most of the time, it's just something to keep in mind. Also, maturity levels do vary widely regardless of gender. Maybe I was just raised around people who committed young, but at 28, I feel a lot of pressure to settle down. I feel like no one would actually want me at this point in my life, that they would think I'm defective because I haven't settled down yet. Most people who are my age, or several years younger, are either engaged, married, or have a child together and want to be married. So I think your profile might be a little off there.
