For anyone who doesn't know yet, Brandon Cole has begun using Retroarch in his streams. He broke his limits even more than I probably ever will by tackling Dissidia Duodecim's story mode head on, and even finished, I think, the first chapter of the 12th cycle. I mean, it took a good 5 minutes to find each gateway, but hopefully Retroarch can make parts like that open world map thing easier:https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/issues/9920Follow him on Twitter, @superblindman, for more on his streams. He's definitely inspired me to work harder on story mode of 012, which I thought was pretty impossible until I heard him actually do it.

#295: The Tiger handheld games seem to be supported by MAME, which does have a core in retroarch. For getting games without viruses, simply don't download any executable files, like .exe or .dmg. Always choose "Download with Browser" or "more options" to get a file. For example, PSP games, PS2 games, and GameCube and Wii games will be in the .ISO format, N64 games will be in .n64 format, NES will be in .NES format, ETC.

This was the most unfulfilling thread ever! I wanted something to eat popcorn to and I just get "on just read some specific number post on some unspecified, unliked thread." Bah, I'm gonna go play my favorite game now.In all seriousness, though, this is kinda what a game about PVP becomes, I'd think so at least. When you have a game where instead of working together or teaming up you just kill people in a bath of *blood*, well, yeah feelings rise, animosity rules, and our humanity decreases just enough to make us, well, want a blood bath maybe?Game developers, when creating online games, maybe give players something to fight for than "oh just kill everyone for no good reason". Give a common enemy to fight against, give a goal to work towards that is *good*, rather than just being king of the hill with nothing to show for it but empty anger.

Could this library be used in more than just games? For example, I could see this being used in Retroarch for Windows users, to hopefully cut down on needed libraries to access stuff. Also, Retroarch is written in C/C++, so it shouldn't be hard to integrate there. Also, having speech be controllable by the developers would be great, one could use 3D libraries to tell the user where things are by "pointing" at them, instead of saying "Ex-core: 5 full dashes away in the left corner at the north end of the stage" and such.

Re: Screen Reader Support in Audio Games

I prefer screen reader output, very much because of synthesizer usage. In Manamon, eSpeak seems to be able to pronounce Manamon names correctly, whereas Microsoft David cannot. Also, has anyone used the OneCore voices to read a good deal of text? Try it here. Do you hear the amount of time taken between sentences? I hate using it for that reason, and that David sounds even more robotic, intonation wise, than eSpeak, and that's saying something. Microsoft may care a bit about accessibility, but for TTS, no. Windows OneCore, and sAPI5, make me /want/ to use eSpeak or Eloquence, so if I have to use that voice, the game becomes pretty boring to me.

Re: Blind people can't beat Samurai Shodown 2019 story mode

I'll readily admit that I am not always patient, but my gosh we all have to try things out sometimes. When I first started using retroarch's accessibility, I learned by exploring. If it helps, think of it like a game, exploring new stuff, figuring out what does what. And yeah, you can ask questions, and I'll point you to where you can learn more. Documentation is written so that people can have a central guide on a topic, so that the information doesn't have to be said over and over again. I know, though, that a lot of people are not very technically minded, and will need extra documentation, a getting started guide, so I'll work on that. Also, the world is nowhere near perfect, and won't be until the return of the king, and that includes software, people, documentation, and games. So we all have to work on being patient with each other, explain things *the best we can*, and seeing how far we can drive accessibility in games and emulation systems.

There are more cores for each system, so y'all could try those others, like PCSX Rearmed or BeedlePSX and such. I really want as many people as possible to be able to take advantage of this, and play as many games as possible. Still, I need input on what more would be helpful. Also, I have edited the accessibility page on Retroarch's documentation, fixing grammar and linking the AI-service page to it.

Okay, I've picked up Audio Wizrds again after trying it a few months ago. I don't mean to be negative or anything, but for me at least, the tutorial just happens too fast. As in, a lot of controls are thrown at me and I cannot memorize them so quickly, nor the sounds the elementals make. I know, I'm not one of those super blind people who can play the most visual games ever with total confidence, but I guess this game just is too hard for me. Ah well, I'll stick with Dissidia Final Fantasy. but I did buy the game, and I'd be willing to donate to My True Sound, and buy their games just to support them in the future.

Accessible Retro games: a central list of enjoyable video games

2019-12-20 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : devinprater via Audiogames-reflector

Accessible Retro games: a central list of enjoyable video games

TL; DR: https://github.com/devinprater/accessible-retro-gamesHi all. Riding the blaze of Retroarch accessibility, I created a place where we can list and document games which are made enjoyable to us with the help of Retroarch's accessibility mode, Windows OCR on other emulators, and sound cues. Help with this massive undertaking is deeply appreciated. First, though, the background:There have been many great topics here, and some sites, like Brandon Cole (super blind man) and his blog, showing good accessible games for consoles. Due to this being a forum, with things being in topics, and some topics being duplicates in purpose to others, things are not well organized for some one who may be newly blind, or who is new to video gaming, or some one, like me, who simply wants complete documentation on how to play a game, and not just "oh this game is great, look how far I've gotten." Which, I'm sure I've done that before so I'm not pointing fingers at any one person. So, off I go to Github, basically a collaboration site for projects. I originally just thought of having a simple text file and just have a simple list of games. But, as the idea grew, I thought of more: having save files so that we could jump around in games, or go right to beating Lavos for the over nine thousandth time, or having separate long user guides especially for us, or guides maybe from GameFaqs, modified to be useful for us. Down with Ascii graphics! Or, even link to actual game sounds to take note of as useful for us, and not, as I've had to do with Dissidia, just describing them. Um, yeah, electronic sort of sustained "closing" sound thingie. So, I present to you all, this Github repository:https://github.com/devinprater/accessible-retro-gamesFor now, this has the first draft on playing Dissidia Final Fantasy for the PSP. I've beaten the story mode, even the Shantato and Gabranth arcs, before, and I'm on my second play through on my Mac with Retroarch. Any game which can be emulated and is enjoyable for us is allowed, just please, describe how you play it, what makes it accessible... Just follow the template I made. You may ask, then, "well what about audio games and games actual people play nowadays? Come on Devin, popular games, like Mortal kombat 11, win! We should not be striving after the past, dude." Well, those games can, in my oppinion, be played much more easily than older games. Mortal kombat 11, Gears 5, all have speech in menus and probably other areas too. Gears5 actually has accessibility features other than speaking menus. So, I'll leave that to some one else to create. But for me, retro games are not only more plentiful, and smaller on the hard drive, but offer a chance for us to enjoy games that, until now, only the most patient and enduring of blind people could enjoy. I only seek to crowd-source a space where we can learn from each other, and enjoy more and more emulated games.Note that this repository does not accept game ROMs. Save files are fine, as well as patches, and how to use them, and home-brew games. After all, I cannot ethically prevent you from the treasure hunt that is finding old games, and backing them up to a computer. Also, please keep to Markdown as the markup you write in. I know, org-mode is amazing, but not everyone knows about Emacs and the power of Org, so let's keep to a common standard. And please, not HTML unless necessary in a Markdown file.

That sounds really good, just would need a controller and battery pack too. It kind of doesn't sound as portable as my phone, my controller actually slides onto either side of my phone, one side flitting into the Lightning port, making the controller a bit like a PSP, with the D-pad and joystick on one side, and the right joystick and face buttons on the right, and the shoulder and trigger buttons on the back of the controller. Yeah, when I had PPSSPP on my phone, please don't ask how I got it, I'm just about help-desked out for now, it was a great experience.

Re: Retroarch is now accessible

Please read:Okay, a few things about posting issues on Github. I'm not pointing fingers, I just want to get this straightened before this becomes the norm. @barryRo, please correct me if I get anything wrong.First: When you make an issue, please detail as much as you can. If possible, paste a log or attach it, or put it in a gist a link to it. When you detail the problem, list your Windows version, do "winver" in the Run dialog to get this information. Detail your computer hardware, Retroarch version (or nightly file name or date and time of download). List the Rom and core you were using when the problem occurred.Second, do *not* demand anything from the Retroarch developers. Asking is great, but these people do this as a hobby, and even if you pay them for this, you should not demand that a problem be fixed right now. Be kind to these people, I beg all of you. They work very hard, not only to develop accessibility features for us, but to test them, and ask us any questions they may need to make things great for us.And, always remember that accessibility isn't the only thing they do. They're always adding new cores, fixing old ones, updating cores, adding visual shaders, cleaning up their code, and then blogging and making videos about these improvements. Well, I mean, I wrote and did the video for the accessibility one, but yeah. These people are passionate about what they do, and we should not make them cynical about us by posting as if we were their boss. Hint, we're not. We're gamers just like them, and we should work together for the accessibility of retro video games. I mean, who doesn't wish that they could play Final Fantasy 7?

For the security, make sure that what you download is a game ROM, not an EXE file. If it's a zip file, unzip it and see what's inside.

Okay, first revision of game guide for Dissidia Final Fantasy is up. Should I make a new thread for this? Anyways, I wanted to get the ball rolling, so here's that:https://github.com/devinprater/accessib … es-list.mdFor anyone who wants to contribute, link to main page is:https://github.com/devinprater/accessible-retro-gamesIf a new thread is created, I just would want to use that to announce new games added. That just branched from this Retroarch Accessibility project, so that's why I'm posting about this first thing here.

It is hoped that it'll be released sometime this weekend.Wow, y'all are definitely putting Retroarch through its paces.  For the person asking about AI verses OCR, basically I'm pretty sure this either greyscale the image, making it easier for the ZTranslate's OCR, or if it doesn't, then yeah screen reader's OCR is better except for one point. If I'm laying in bed, playing through Terra's story mode for the thousandth time, I don't really want to drag this voluminous body out of bed and to the keyboard just to attempt to press the R key before something else happens. With Retroarch, we've achieved something that the great Microsoft has not, AI OCR bound to a controller button! Yes, you can find that hotkey to an Xbox button and not have to reach for the keyboard.

Re: Retroarch is now accessible

#11: Yeah, grab the nightly version.@stirlock: How in the world do you play Chrono Trigger? I guess I should know that first before we get into how you beat Lavos, which is probably OCR'ing the battle screens. Lol, post a video of that to Reddit's r/emulation sub and you'll be a god for sure.Everyone else: I'm surprised that this thread grew so quickly. To anyone wanting to try this right meow, you'll need to download the nightly build, not the release version. 1.8.2 will be released in a few days, hopefully, if you'd rather wait for that.To the person, post 6 I think, wanting to know what Retroarch is, it is basically a program that gives one access to many emulators, but in a unified way. For example, your library of games is one library, but opens using the emulators, or cores, that the type of game works with. So, Dissidia Final Fantasy will open with PPSSPP, and Mortal Kombat Gold will work with the Sega Dreamcast core. But you don't have to have those programs on your computer, you download the cores from Retroarch. Also, a great thing about it being a unified system is that you don't have to map your Xbox 1X controller to 20 different emulators, which will have 20 different interfaces to do so, with 20 different levels of accessibility. Granted, the mapping interface on Retroarch is a bit weird, just listen for up, down, left, and right when dealing with the face buttons, and map direction wise, not letter wise (A, B, Y, and X). But once that's mapped right, it'll work the same across all cores.Another thing is that, while for now we have OCR, hopefully in the future, we'll have sort of game packs for accessibility, containing not just text from the game, but information about things nearby the character, which I hope will be short sounds, not text, information about health bars in fighting games, ledges so that I don't fall into stage traps so much in Dissidia, and, perhaps, even descriptions of stages and characters if we really want to wish hard, and of course menus which speak as one moves the cursor. All that is quite a ways off, but I'm sure that if we all work together with the Retroarch team, this will definitely be only one small step to video game accessibility, and I'll be able to enjoy games like Zelda, Final Fantasy, and plenty others. After all, if we can get this far, with a whole user interface accessible, and OCR in games as a supported accessibility tool, why not dream even bigger. I say, let's break our limits! Uh, like, limit breaks in Final Fantasy...

Retroarch is now accessible

Hey y'all, I guess I'm an accessibility activist now. A few weeks ago, I made an issue on the Retroarch Github about having accessibility on the Retroarch menus. Within a few weeks, it was done, on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It already had the ability to grab game screen shots, send them to a translation service, and speak the translation, effectively acting like NVDA's OCR ability. It's already on Twitter and Reddit, but here's a link to the official retroarch blog post about, which has a link to a video showing it off. Note that I did indeed buy the game I was playing, from the Playstation Network so no piracy was going on here. Just saying. Also, if this actually belongs in new releases, since we were not able to use Retroarch before... although it is a gaming utility, not a game... feel free to move it. Re: Playable game boy and game gear games

2019-12-11 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : devinprater via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Playable game boy and game gear games

KenshiraTheTrinity wrote:There are lots and lots, believe it! If I'd seen this thread sooner I would've responded but it came up while I was traveling lol.Anyway, the games that are playable cover a wide variety of genres from fighting to sports to rpgs.  So here are a few that come to mind starting with gameboy and gameboy color. The obvious ones are the main line of pokemon games from generations 1 and 2,, being red blue yellow, and gold silver crystal. My favorite racer and the only playable one I know of on the gameboy is f1 race. It is a lot like top speed 3. Next is battle ping pong, which has different sounds for different ways to hit the ball, and you dont need to worry about having to move the paddle left and right, just a to serve, b to hit, and up and down plus b to hit your ball differently. There is a nice box pushing puzzle game called kwarx I think it is that's very playable because of its sound design.Battle ship is also playable, complete with a lengthy campaign, leveling system and weapon upgrades. Another playable game is radar mission, but only one of the modes.I haven't mentioned any fighters because there are all the obvious ones from sf to mk to ki to king of fighters to fatal fury to super Chinese fighters. Ok that last one might be a little mor obscure. There are the double dragon games if you want beat em ups, surprisingly those are a little more rare on the gameboy. The first tmnt game is another one but not the last two.If you're using emulation then the game and watch gallery games are a fun diversion of minigames, many of which are playable, with more to unlock.Lots of shooters too if you dont mind the use of emulation to help. Space invaders actually has stereo sounds.Q'bert is also playable, but of course you wont be able to hear the enemy so it'll take trial and error. Lock and chase might also be playable eith some help.Track and field is mostly playable, ESPN's new international track and field is more of the same. If you have a way to read the text then the yugioh games will probably be playable.Obviously there are tons more. Due to the simple nature of the gameboy and gameboy color there is a lot less you need to worry about so it's really just a matter of taking the time to experiment and figure out what you like. I will leave you with two more gameboy games, bionic commander which is a 3d mech combat game, and side pocket if you're up for some billiards action. O also kwirx also has a sequel if you like it but I dont remember the name. In my gameboy and gameboy color collection on my psp, I have about 90 games that I would consider at least somewhat playable, and at most completeable. On the gamegear side of things, it's a little less complicated because of its smaller library. The standout playable games on gamegear are the two power rangers games, both streets of rage games, and virtua fighters mini. Also double dragon. Of course there may be more that I dont know about.Hope that helps. That is quite a lot of info i know, but I'm sure it only just scratches the surface of what we can actually play. If you want to include gameboy advance, that's a whole another can of worms to sort through, but if interested I will list my findings for gba too.Wow, I'd love to get a list of playable games on systems like this, the SNES and N64 and so on.
