They are basically a tall container with a spout on one side that is where you pour the brewed coffee from, just like a piture. In side is a metal tube that's almost as tall as the container. You also have a metal basket with a cover, both the basket and cover have lots of small holes to allow water through. Finally the container has a lid with a glass bubble in the middle so it ends up being right over the metal tube.To use it, you first fill the container with water, then put the metal basket on the metal tube, the tube has a ring on it that the basket can't pass so the basket stays near the top of the container. Now you put the tube and basket into the container. Then you put a paper filter in the bottom of the basket, then add the coffee grounds on top of the filter, then put the basket's cover on it so the tube sticks up through a hole in the cover, then finally put the container' ;s lid on the container.Now you heat the water, some percolators had their own heating element, so you just plugged those in to start brewing. Others required that you put it on the stove to heat the water.When the water gets hot enough, steam bubbles will push heated water up the tube. When the water comes out of the top of the tube it comes up inside the glass bubble in the container's lid, spreads out, then drips down on top of the basket's cover. Gravity then draws the water through the grounds and back into the container. This continues until you remove the heat. By watching how dark the brewed coffee percolating up into the bubble is, you can decide when to remove the heat. If you like strong coffee, you just leave it percolating longer.When brewing is done, the percolator becomes a piture full of hot coffee. Because of the pouring spout you don't need to remove the basket and tube assembly until you want to clean them. It doesn't hurt the coffee to leave them there, though some people prefer to remove them as soon as brewing is done so they can leave the piture plugged in or on the stove to keep the coffee hot. What probably made the coffee bitter is either the brand and style they use, or more likely, that hot plate the carafe sits on.Back when I drank more coffee and worked in an office, I always transferred the coffee from the coffee maker's carafe to a vacuum bottle thermos as soon as brewing was done. Then served up my coffee from the thermos. You avoid over brewing or burning the coffee that way. I've found that it doesn't take much to make an excellent pot of coffee undrinkable, and leaving it sitting on the coffee maker's hot plate is one sure way to do it.What you describe as how you make your coffee sounds interesting but I'm having difficulty picturing just exactly what you are describing.The only coffee brewing methods I've ever encountered were the percolators and the automatic drip coffee makers that took over when Mr. Coffee introduced the first one back in the 70s or 60s. Hey, Dark!Since I don't know how much or how little you know about coffee makers, I'll describe how automatic drip coffee makers work so you can compare them to what you use. If you already know this, my apologies for rehashing what you already know.First to setup a drip coffee maker for brewing, you either put a paper filter in the filter basket, then put the grounds in the filter. Or if your coffee maker has a permanent filter and you are using it, you just put the permanent filter in the filter basket, then put the grounds in the permanent filter. Next you fill the reservoir with water, I use filtered tap water where the filter removes sediment, chemicals, and metals from the water.The water in the reservoir feeds into a metal pipe that goes from the bottom of the reservoir to something that resembles a flat showerhead that is above the coffee grounds in the filter in the filter basket. When you turn the coffee maker on, the metal pipe is heated t o bring the water in it to a boil. The steam bubbles that form push the heated water up into the showerhead which allows the heated water to drip onto the coffee grounds. From there it's all gravity. The heated water works its way through the grounds, then through the filter, then into the filter basket which pours the collected coffee into your carafe, mug, jug, or whatever the coffee maker is designed to work with. When there is no more water left over to fill the metal pipe a thermal switch turns off the brewing. Multi cup coffee makers that leave the brewed coffee in some kind of container usually have a heating pad under the container to keep the coffee hot. Those have to be manually turned off, though some coffee makers have a timed shut off for that too. Single cup coffee makers like the one I use, turn off when brewing is done. Re: How do you make your coffee? My coffee needs are rather simple. I buy coffee already ground, my parents, however, buy their coffee in bags of beans and grind them just before brewing. I don't know what kind of beans they buy but I buy Folger's Black Silk coffee. After that we both use an automatic drip coffee maker. Both models have a permanent filter that just needs rinsing out after each use, but I find I prefer my coffee filtered through a paper filter, so I don't use the permanent filter at all. I'm told the difference is that the paper filter absorbs much of the oils in the coffee than can make it bitter, while the permanent filters allow the oils to pass through. My dad likes his coffee black, while my mom and I prefer a small dab of sugar and a small dallop of half and half in our coffee. Most of the time I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning, but on weekends, I might have two. It wanted access to my location and wanted to know my cable provider, and wanted my account credentials for my cable TV service.While I am willing to share some information, such as who my cable TV provider is. Considering that we have a local broadcast station affiliated with Fox, which means I don't need a cable TV account to get Fox programming, I wasn't willing to share my cable TV account information with the app. Besides, the Fox web site doesn't ask for any of this information, which tells me it isn't really necessary to provide the content.And to top it all off, while I could find Closed Captioning options in the app, there was nothing about audio description or the secondary audio program in the app, so audio description probably isn't supported.Regarding the web site and it's inability to load the player, that's probably because I don't have Flash or Shockwave i nstalled, and refuse to install them. There are too many web sites that abuse them by playing advertising or other video without asking for my permission first, even when I set the option to not automatically play any content. And both multimedia players are notoriously inaccessible. So all I have is Windows Media Player and that works with YouTube which is all I need. Re: has anyone got a link to these series? TiVo is a DVR. Like a VCR it allows me to schedule programs to be recorded for later viewing. Unlike a VCR there's no programming, it connects to the TiVo service, which is a program guide. What this does is allow me to schedule programs by title to be recorded, so if I schedule The Orville to be recorded, it will record each episode as it airs each week, and if the program changes the day or time slot it airs in, the TiVo automatically adapts. It the best way ever to watch TV, I'm no longer a slave to when my favorite shows air, I just let the TiVo box record it, then when I am in the mood to watch some TV, I just pick something from the catalog of programs that have been recorded.The Fox app might be a solution, Do you know if it supports audio description? I knew it wouldn't be in the movie vault, if it shows up there it won't be until the first season is over.I asked because I keep hearing fox advertise "catch up on demand and on these devices" which doesn't help me much since I can't see the screen to see which devices they are referring to, though I could probably guess what they are.And I don't use the box that my cable provider uses because it isn't accessible, instead I use a TiVo Bolt DVR with a cable card, at least it has a screen reader making it accessible, though I lose the ability to watch on demand. Re: Need email advice @turtlepower17Thank you for that tip about Pop Peeper, have some karma.I had been using GMail Notifier which is mostly accessible, some areas require that I switch to JAWS' touch curser to navigate.Pop Peeper seems to be fully accessible and does one thing GMail Notifier didn't do which is a big plus to me and that is that the system tray icon caption tells you how many new emails are waiting for you. GMail Notifier's icon just said the program's name, you had to open it, switch to the touch curser, then browse to the table with the number of new emails, a lot of work only to find you have no new emails.Although I don't need the features of the Pro version, in fact I didn't install any of the pro features, I will probably buy it just to show my support for such a nice and accessible program. I don't know about anyone else but even if I was an Apple fan, I found nothing in Apple's new offerings that had a feature I couldn't live without. Over all they were all rather underwhelming if you ask me.My iPhone SE works just fine for my needs, plus I prefer it's smaller format than the larger formats of the newer iPhones. Besides that, it has a Home button with Touch ID and a headphone jack.As for iOS 11, I'm going to take Joe Steincamp's advice and wait for 11.1 before upgrading my phone as there are some major accessibility bugs in 11.0. Accessible hurricane tracker?
Accessible hurricane tracker? Because I live on the gulf coast of Florida I am interested in keeping track of hurricanes, where they are and where they are going. Most hurricane tracking reports are useless unless you are a geography whiz or have an appropriate accessible map handy. To me, a truly useful hurricane tracker would tell you a storm's location and movement relative to where you are. For example, being told hurricane Irma is southeast of me and 1,100 miles away is far more useful than being told that it is 90 miles west of the Lesser Antilles. So, does anyone know of an accessible hurricane tracking program for Windows or app for iOS? Just load the PDF into Adobe Reader, then press Inser + Space to get into layered mode, then press O to go into the OCR layer, then press D for document, the resulting text will be placed in the virtual viewer where you can copy and paste it into something else, such as Notepad or Word for editing and or saving.What is coming in November is the ability to run the OCR on an image file. While in Windows Explorer, highlight the file you want to OCR, then you can use one of two methods to do the OCR on the file. The first is to use layered mode, press Insert + space, then press O, and finally press F for file. The other way is to either right click or press the application key, or press shift + F10 to bring up the context menu, there will be an OCR with JAWS option. It's very annoying to hear about a game that sounds like it might be something I might be interested in only to find out that it's an Xbox or PS4 game and that the only way to play it is to memorise the menu system and then try to hear very subtle audio cues to know when to push this button or that other one. That's not something I'm looking for.And then there's the question of Steam. Re: Jaws eloquence crash strings To get built in OCR capabilities, with NVDA you either have to get some third party OCR package, or use the latest version of Windows 10 so that NVDA can use the built in OCR that Microsoft recently added. On the other hand JAWS has had built in OCR capabilities since before version 15, or at least four years ago.I've heard people say that NVDA is superior because of all the add ons available for it. Well, it has all those add ons because it needs them to equal the features set that comes ready to use with JAWS.At the same time JAWS has its own set of issues, so, no its not superior to NVDA either.They are simply two different screen readers, neither one is better than the other. So I have both installed. JAWS is my primary screen reader and loads when Windows does. NVDA is there for those few, and I do mean few because they don't happen very often, times when NVDA works out better than JAWS. And that is generally when I want to play one of a small s et of games. If I didn't play games on my computer, I wouldn't even need to have NVDA installed. Then attach a piece of wire hanger bent into a hook that fis inside the cane sections to the elastic cord. Be sure your wire hook is longer than the cane sections. Now using the wire hook pull the elastic cord through each section of the cane as you reassemble it. Finally attach the new tip to the elastic cord, and remove your wire hook.When I change the tip on my cane, I hook the new tip onto the elastic cord before I remove the old tip. Doing it this way eliminates the possibility of losing the cord down the cane.Good luck! For cooking, I use the microwave most of the time, and a toaster oven for the rest, with a few exceptions.For steaks, I use a George Foreman grill, since I live alone, I have one that a 6 inch boneless rib eye fits on nicely. If you haven't gotten one yet and plan to, I highly recommend you get one with removeable plates, it makes clean up far easier.I also have an air fryer, but haven't found what works best in it, most of what I've tried could have been done better using the toaster oven.For cutting food at the dinner table I use a fork to determine the size and shape and from that the best way to cut off a bite. Mostly I do OK but if I start getting frustrated, I'll ask a family member to cut it up for me. My father usually volunteers before any one else can, unless we're already at the table, then the family member closest to me does it.Over time and with practice I get better and better to the point that now it's rare for me to need help.Also, no matter how fancy the setting, I am not shy about using my fingers when I feel it's needed. If anyone objects, I simply ask them if they need a blindfold. That usually settles the matter rather promptly. That's why I don't even bother with audio captchas and just use Captcha Be Gone on the graphic one. If you use your arrow keys you'll notice that there are no numbers in the text of the math question. The captcha asks that you answer in words rather than numbers, so the answer to the above question is eighteen. Also it randomply chooses the function so you might get an addition, or a subtraction, or a multiplication, or division, or a percentage problem. It also randomly chooses the phrasing of the question, so one time it might ask what is twenty one divided by seven, but the next time it asks, how many time does seven go into twenty one? To make answering the question easier it restricts answers to integers, no fractions or decimals. It also generates problems that can be solved in your head, nothing so complex or with numbers big enough to need a calculator. A short but interesting project.---A note for those that might be interes ted, despite being more than a year old, Captcha Be Gone is still selling at the introductory prices. You can either subscribe for $3 per month or $33 per year.
