Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility
Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility While I wouldn't use Windows as my primary operating system just yet, I really like the scan mode in Narrator. It seems to virtualize any type of window that you're in. The web part of it works like the virtual buffer in NVDA or Jaws. When you're in an application or dialogue box, it allows you to arrow around, read the text and even select controls like buttons. I'm really liking these Narrator enhancements. If Microsoft keeps improving, I may actually consider Windows again at some point in the future. BTW, the installer still doesn't talk. I had to use a talking PE environment in VMware to get Windows installed. When will they learn? Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility
Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility Yes, my apologies, I should have pointed that out.I would probably switch to either Free Commander or Explorer++ myself if it comes down to that. I like Explorer++ because it integrates seamlessly into the existing Explorer shell, and while it has a bunch of other features that aren't present in the original Explorer, it looks and feels just similar enough so that the new additions are a welcome change, rather than a big learning curve. Free Commander is really its own beast, but the "commander" aspect of the title is no joke. It's a really powerful program, but keep in mind that stuff isn't going to be where you might expect it to be. Oh, sure, the essentials are in their rightful places, such as renaming and creating folders and files, for example. And the shortcuts you're used to do work. But there's a lot more to it than that too.having said that, Free Commander is in the list of things I want to play around with more when I hav e more inclination to dive in and explore all the complexities. In short, as much as I really don't think microsoft should be doing this, and, I admit that I hadn't even considered changing to a different program yesterday when I wrote my original post on the subject, it is an option. So if Microsoft thinks that they can stop people from using the classic features of Explorer that they've always known and loved, they're sorely mistaken. Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility
Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility yeah, it should. I'm actually a little worried about the future of File Explorer, as it's now called. I read an article which stated that Microsoft plans to make File Explorer a universal app.I would bet that this is to stop people from modifying it, the way we can now, with things like ribbon Disabler, old new Explorer or Classic Shell. I don't mind not having Classic Shell, but I absolutely despise ribbons. Tasks that used to only require a keystroke or two, or at most a brief look through the menus, are pretty much impossible to do with ribbons. So I hope Microsoft reconsiders this, because I would really not be happy if I'm forced to use ribbons. Besides that, with UAC disabled, you can't run any of the universal apps. That means I'd have to turn UAC back on, yuck. Ain't nobody got time for constantly telling your computer that yes, I am perfectly capable of handling copying and moving files, thank you very much, I don't need Wind ows to hold my hand and blather on about permissions every single time. Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility
Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility About the anniversary update, I can say that it is a good job from the microsoft team this time. The windows in general seems more stable than the last version I was using, but not quite fast as the last one, especially when opening Windows explorer. The start menu improvements are welcomed to me, but I think that the power options should work like in windows 7 because in this way they get many people confused. If I leave my computer to my father, he won't know how to turn it off.Classic shell, sadly, doesn't want to be installed on my PC. Windows said it wasn't compatible with it.One issue I detest with screen readers is the notification thing which gets me angry sometimes. Both JAWS and NVDA, but at most JAWS fails to read notifications and that is very sad.And lastly, and most importantly, Narrator is immensely improved!Today I opened Microsoft edge and used the scan mode to read the web content and the experience was realy satisfying . I was able, for the first time, to browse the internet with Narrator using headings and links. I logged in to facebook, and got super surprised when read the status of my friend with imoji read aloud. At times I had to change between scan mode and normal mode of Narrator to move to the beginning and end of the page, but over all the experience was highly pleasing. The speed of narrator is improved and thanks to verbosity levels, you can have read to you only what is necessary. Now I believe for the first time this screen reader could have a great potential in the future. Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility
Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility I also use the NVDA next snapshots, and there are very few issues that I've encountered. There are a couple places in the settings app that aren't very accessible yet, such as where you can specify active hours for updates. But seeing as I've configured mine to only notify me when updates are available anyway, I don't need to mess with that. It could be a problem for those who need it. having said that, I haven't tried to configure those time pickers with Narrator, so this may be an option.Personally, I like the new start menu layout, but it will probably take a bit to get used to for some folks. Also, first letter navigation is still partially broken. This is something I really hope Microsoft will fix sometime in the future. You can't, for example, continuously type c until you find C Cleaner, nor can you type the letter C for C Cleaner, then change your mind and type D for Defraggler. Of course, to get around this, you can use the search box, which is much improved, at least with NVDA.Edge support still isn't really there yet, but frankly, I'm not holding my breath for that anyway. And, as a Firefox and occasional Chrome user, I don't have any particular feelings one way or the other about Edge.On the email lists I follow, there was a great deal of confusion expressed about where the power button is now located. it's still in the start menu, but you need to tab to get to that column of options, where your user folder can also be found. But keep in mind that there's a simpler way of doing that, too. You can press Windows x, and scroll through the menu until you find shut down or sign out in there.Hopefully I've been able to provide a balanced perspective of what changes and accessibility hurdles to expect in the anniversary update. Someone previously mentioned the UAC dialogs, and that's pretty annoying, I have to admit. I have UAC disabled, but lots of people belie ve that to do so is a grave security risk, so it's unacceptable that such an essential Windows feature can't be navigated by any screen reader at this time. Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility I am Windows insider, so I'm using the new official update already. With NVDA it works pretty decent, the only issue is user account control dialog not reading if set to 33%, and toast notifications not beeing spoken automatically but this issue is currently beeing worked on. You will get some improvements for Win10 and some Win10 apps if you additionally install Win10 Essentials addon by Joseph Lee.I'm using command prompt as a developer a lot, and I don't have any serious problems with it.Microsoft Edge is still not for daily usage. Windows 10 Mail is accessible and usable. However, they recommend NVDA 2016.3 or later for this new Win10 update, so probably people using stable version of NVDA shouldn't upgrade immediately. But 2016.3 update of NVDA is very close anyway. Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Accessibility Well i don't know what you consider behing accessible but you still can read the results on the calculator. The thing is that now it changed, you can access the different signals with tab and it don't tell the results automaticaly like the ones present on previous windows when you press enter.
