[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Best mod?

2005-12-19 Thread jonheal

This issue could be resolved if someone at Slim would be willing to
respond with the SB3's wattage usage. The difference between a 1 amp
power supply and a 2 amp supply is that the 2 amp supply is going to be
capable of delivering twice the wattage: 10 watts vs. 5.

How much power does the SB3 consume in it's most power hungry state,
which I would guess is when it's pumping out maximum signal levels
through the analog outputs?

The internal workings are going to require some wattage. The display
requires some wattage. And the preamp stage requires some wattage. What
does it all add up to?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: How to get a deep soundstage

2005-12-19 Thread tyler_durden

Here's what I can do-

I'll rip an audio track through my C-9 (I'll have to use the analog
inputs on my sound card, not so high quality) and while the track is
being ripped, I'll switch the carver box in and out a few times. Then
I'll post the file to a web page. You can then play it back on your
system and see if it pops your rocket...

Let me think about a good track to demo it (the effect varies depending
on how the recording is mixed).

Also, you should understand that for the magic to occur, you need to
have the speakers set up well (generally, a couple feet from
surrounding walls, and pointed at the listener, listener a couple feet
from nearest walls), which is going to be a requirement for any good
audio performance, with or without a cross-talk canceller.

OK I'm back. Figures are as follows:

My voltage is 243.9v
Frequency is 49.9hz

SB3 is consuming 5/6 watts, 0.04 amps, 9VA, PF of 0.61

The SB3 was on Random Play, digital coax out, volume control at
maximum, display medium size text. Actually with the SB3 in standby the
figures are the same but then it would be as it is the PSU I am really
measuring so the actual SB3 consumption would be less.

supplies are about 95% efficient so I reckon the figures are about
 right.

If the SB3 is drawing 6 watts, I don't see how a 1 amp power supply
will be sufficient. I'm not an electrical engineer, but I am assuming
that the SB3 will use slightly less power if either the headphone jack
or the analog jacks are not in use (your case), although I would be
suprised if it put out more than 1 watt RMS into either under load.

Even so, adding another watt to the sum brings our total to 6 - 7
watts.

Here's another question.

A lot of the folks going with a linear power supply seem to be using
outboard DACs. I presume these folks side with linear supplies because
they generate less high-frequency noise. However, is it not true that
switching supplies generate less hum (low-frequency noise)? If so,
would one not be better off sticking with the stock supply if one were
using the SB3's analog outputs to connect to one's hifi?

I'm still not sure the board has reached a consensus. Does anyone think
the linear power supply makes a difference for the digital output?

Rest of my PSU parts arrive tomorrow so I should have a working linear
supply by Thursday. I will then do a comparison but in the interest of
fairness I will use my resident 'Golden Ears' - my wife. No interest in
technology but she does have the ears of a bat. I can put her in front
of a system, tweak it and get an instant answer which tends to be in
the categories of better, worse, can I go now!

2005-12-19 Thread tyler_durden

I recorded a few tracks by looping the audio out from my computer
through the C-9 and back into the line input. I switched the C-9 on
and off at 1 minute intervals during the recording (refer to the flac
tags).

Here are links to the files which will only be there for a week. I
will also post them to usenet so they'll be available for a little
longer than that, depending on your news server. Details will be
posted later...

Listen to the files on your stereo system. Don't rely on what you hear
from your computer speakers! The effect is speaker and listener
placement critical!

The tracks are A Forest by the Cure, Love is Blindness by Cassandra
Wilson, and Teasing the Korean by Sex Mob. I tried to pick tracks
that would demonstrate the behavior of the C-9 on vocals, acoustic
instruments, and electronic music.

What you'll find is that it seems to be pretty good on some music and
not so good on other music, which is why you probably would not want to
process all your flac files through this type of effect.

If you want to see if the effect holds up through compression, try
compressing the files at different bit rates and see how it sounds.

Here are links to the files, in the order listed above:

http://tinyurl.com/ddgvk
http://tinyurl.com/ba73u

Enjoy!

My guess was that because the Allied unit I got
was low by over 10% from the spec of 5.0V,
this led to the flickering when it powered
the SB3. I hope that a replacement unit
 will provide a full-fledged 5.0V (I measured
the switching PSU that came with the SB3,
and it was putting out 5.13-5.08 V, consistently.

You really need to get +/- 0.1V. There is something wrong your power
supply if it's off by 10%.

Under/over-voltage shouldn't hurt SB2/3, but it may function
erratically. I can tell you for sure that the display and analog stage
will not function correctly below 4.6V, and below 4.9 is questionable.
If you're going to use an aftermarket supply try to get it dead-on 5.0.
Linear supplies are usually easy to calibrate - measure at SB3, not the
output. A shorter, heavier cable may help too.
