It's only 10W, the case is large, and the thick aluminum transfers heat
well it is not an issue. Also, keeping the case airtight is
desirable for performance and reliability, as it keeps dust and
moisture out.

Liner notes? What are they? I remember buying vinyl LPs that sometimes

A fair number of my recent CDs don't even have jewel boxes, they are in

I think that's definitely a good idea. If I were relying on the
Transporter's volume control, I'd want the same behavior. I would also
want an option to fall back to this default/bootup mode after N seconds
of button inactivity. So if I had been using the knob to browse, play,
etc. I could always be sure that when I walk over to the Transporter
that I'd be controlling the volume by default. Is there a visual
indicator that shows when the knob is in 'volume' mode?

2006-09-27 Thread ScoobyMusic

Chris,

Given how the knob is entirely driven by software control I think it
would make sense to give the user the ability to configure the default
use of the knob on power up.

When I turn my system on it may still be accessing the same play list
as when it was turned off (most of the time). The primary change I make
is to adjust volume and to start the playing, therefore being able to
turn the knob without having to press the volume front panel button
makes more ergonomic sense to me. Having said that I am sure many
people will want to do something other than volume as the first twist
of the knob.
To that end - how about a parameter that can be set from the slimserver
player settings module to allow the "boot up" mode of the knob. In my
case I would set it to volume control

Hope this helps and if others feel the same - chip in

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter analog out questions

2006-09-27 Thread gharris999

OK, Transporter sans pre-amp is working well.

For the "listening room" (a.k.a. office) I've got the Transporter
unbalanced analog outs going direct into a ATI AT1502 amp driving
Magneplanar MG3.5's. For the rest of the house, I've got the
Transporter balanced outs "unbalanced" (pin 1 to rca shield, pin 2 to
rca tip) to another ATI AT1502 driving a Niles SVL-4 speaker selector /
volume control feeding 3 pairs of speakers: Magnepanar MG-12QRs in the
living room, Celestron book shelf speakers in the kitchen and some
Celestron - like speakers in the bedroom.

See the attached pics.

So far, the sound is very clean. My favorite "quick impression" piece
for listening is the last movement to the Shostakovich Sym. #6 in the
Jarvi-Scottish National Orch recording. There is a fff passage with
every brass player in the orchestra blowing his brains out and one lone
guy in the back playing the tambourine. With the Transporter replacing
the pre-amp, I think I can hear that tambourine so well that I think I
could count the bangles on it. Compared to my SB3 feeding a benchmark
DAC1 feeding a pair of AKG headphones, there's way more "there" there.

This is totally subjective, of course. I’ll have to live with this
setup for a while before I decide to throw away the pre-amp.

I would have never thought to even listen to it then.
If I use the knob, I immediately walk away from the Transporter so I can

The sliver very closely matches the color of my Classe intergrated amp,

Prior to getting the SB3, I did extensive comparisons between the Lens
and Big Ben (which I did already have). The Big Ben had several
advantages - sounded better, supported up to 192/24, and was
insensitive to the input device.

With the Lens, I could clearly hear differences in transports and
cables - an "impossible" characteristic noted in the classic review at
http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/824/

I did not do any critical listening with the SB3 and Lens. I had been
using it with the Big Ben, and decided to see if the Lens I had in
storage would work with the SB3. Since it didn't meet my needs (all my
FLAC files are 48/16, upsampled from 44.1/16), I sold it.

Using the Big Ben with the SB3 is a significant improvement over the
straight SB3 digital out. It's possible that internal SB3 mods would
produce the same result, but I already had the Big Ben.

My only SB3 mod is a linear power supply. It was a nice improvement
over the stock supply when using the SB3 digital outputs without the
Big Ben. I haven't tried swapping the stock supply back in when using
the Big Ben.

I suspect that if you search Bittorrent for "DVD-A ripping MLP" you
might find tools that can rip digital DVD-A and get 24/96 from a DVD-A.
I've managed to get 24/96 from the one DVD-A I've bought; once I get

I'm not aware of a source for 44.1/24 material.

48/16, 48/24, and 96/24 are all available on various DVD-Video and
DVD-Audio releases.

You can extract tracks from DVD-Video using DVD Audio Extractor
(http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/).

DVD-Audio is more secure and can't be ripped - you need a player with a
digital output and then record the bit stream in real time on a PC.

I'm transferring my 2000 LPs to 96/24 - that's my primary source for
96/24 material.

The new APL HiFi DAC will have 6 AK4396 chips using both outputs on the
AKM DACs (differential mode). This equals 12 DACs per channel.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter vs. Lavry et al for analog output

2006-09-27 Thread joncourage

Quick digression:

what types of media/recordings result in the different PCM resolutions
listed (once ripped of course, to FLAC in my case)?

I'm only familiar with standard red-book CDs...

Also - does the Lavry have any digital outputs? If so, it might make a
better alternative to the Lens...

I just sold a Digital Lens because it wouldn't work with the SB3 at
48kHz. Of the 4 relevant PCM resolutions supported by the SB3 (44.1/16,
44.1/24, 48/16, and 48/24), only 44.1/16 worked with my Digital Lens.
Oddly enough, the Lens did work with a 48/16 stream from my DVD
player.

I was considering a Transporter and have settled instead on a SB3 plus
an Apogee Big Ben feeding my TacT gear. Conceptually, this is at least
as good as a Transporter, and there's no need to mod the SB3 at all.

If you're considering a Lavry, it's also supposed to be insensitive to
the input device, so you wouldn't need SB3 mods either in that case.

So, the options as I see it are:

1) Transporter ($2000)
2) SB3 + Big Ben ($300 + $1200) = $1500 (no mods)
3) SB3 + Lavry ($300 + $850) = $1150 (no mods)

If you need analog outs, it looks like the Lavry is the best bet.

The big difference between these options is that the Transporter
supports 96kHz media, the SB3 doesn't.

Personally, I'm now waiting for a SB4 that does support 96kHz. I think
I'll buy a Transporter remote to tide me over...

Regards,
Kim

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter vs. Lavry et al for analog output

2006-09-27 Thread joncourage

a related question, hopefully I'm not derailing the thread too much

I use the SB3's digital out to an AudioNote DAC 1 (non-OS). How do I
know if this DAC is doing anything similar to what the Lavry does to
eliminate jitter? I like the sound of this combination very much, but
as always if there's something I can do to improve on it - short of the
2k required to upgrade to the Trans - I'm game.

In a recent a/b between the AN DAC and the Benchmark DAC1, everyone
present decisively preferred the AN. To me it just had a much more
engaging, musical, natural presentation. So I'd like to try to keep
it.

Would the Bolder digital mods, plus the upgraded Elpac p/s, plus say a
Digital Lens put me in the same or better territory than a Transporter?
Hmmm, let's see $$ how that adds up in comparison anyways:

SB3 - 300
Bolder mods - 275
Elpac w/mods - 110
Lens - 450

Still a bit cheaper than a Trans, but not by a ton.

Have never tried the Lavry, but if that coupled to a the SB3 both
eliminates the jitter issue and sounds as good / better than the AN, it
would seem an excellent alternative as well.

So, which to choose? Trans, Bolder mods + Lens, or replace AN with a
Lavry?

Wouldn't it be cool to be able to do a shoot-out between the three
systems?

Same problem here. I want to add a SB to my main system, and get an external dac like the Lavry or maybe one of those Chines Dacs (Lite maybe?). But the Transporter looks sooo nice, but would it make sense to spend the extra money on that? And maybe somebody will build a dac with the AK4396?

Note that doing this may not sound the same as using the unbalanced
output from Transporter. The Dac chip has balanced output signals and
in this configuration you are only using one of them. This potentially
removing some of the benefits of differential output from the dac. The
unbalanced output combines the differential outputs and so is a true
unbalanced output.

Yes, I have several recordings in 192/24 and when I heard them on my
M-Audio's Revolution 5.1 (192/24) it was like switching from 128/mp3 to
a CD! 44/16 doesn't sound edgy, it's just that everything is so "bold"

Any cable will do for the clock sync. The whole principle of clock

Well, it is not quite that simple. Error handling in the transport
plays a role, as does how the jitter is being done away with.

If you rip your CDs with something like CD Paranoia you are getting the
best error correction available - better than what a CD player is going
to give you.

There are a couple at least different ways of getting rid of jitter -
one is to asyncronously resample and upsample the digital data. This
eliminated jitter but maps the jitter into noise. This is what the
Benchmark DAC1 does. The Lavry Black in Crystal mode buffers and
reclocks with no upsampling - this is a superior method.

So a Squeezebox combined with a Lavry Black is a very potent
combination indeed. In my listening to the Lavry using headphones it
seems to me that the SB/Lavry is exposing the limits of the recording
and the headphones, period. The SB/Lavry is performing at a level much
higher than the other components I am using. No matter what I have
tried to date.

So with an upgraded account you listened to the stream using the latest
version of the plugin and it sounds like the lower quality? When you
login to Sirius using a web browser does it give any special buttons or
anything for playing the higher quality stream? Also, when you're
streaming a high quality version, can you right click on the player and
see the URL it's pulling for me? Within the url you'll see something
that says &bitrate= What does it say after the =? Does it say
"high", "low", or something else?

Much thanks

What do we want? Smoother Analog VU with FLAC!
When do we want it? At the soonest possible convenience to the
hard-working yet undervalued Slim Developers. ;-)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter, Inside Out

2006-09-27 Thread m1abrams

Sorry for the OT post. But how many other companies in any industry
have a CEO who will gladly answer techinical questions about their
product in an open forum? And will even take critiques on the design.
I currently do not have the funds for a Transporter but when I do you
can sure bet I will have one. I have been thrilled with my Squeezebox
on just performance alone, but also knowing the quality of the company
behind it.

I remember when the Slimp3 was first announced and seeing pictures of
Sean (i think it was Sean) working on a new board with a beer next to
him. I thought hmmm not too sure about this company, now though I just
want to buy Sean another beer!

Keep up the great work, and to the OP thanks for the porn! ;)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: digital crossover & slimserver

2006-09-27 Thread ianwi

Well, I'm actually thinking through about three different solutions.

1) Just buy the DEQX PDC2.6P

Hard to justify the expense but it sounds like a great integrated
solution. Would hook the Squeezebox up via SPDIF. I am concerned that
this would introduce jitter though. I sent email to DEQX enquiring
whether they might ever consider a direct PC connection (like ASIO). No
reply yet. Hoping the price might come down as more competitors enter
the market.

2) Squeezebox -> a different dedicated digital crossover

The Behringer seems to be the obvious frontrunner here. There's also
BSS Audio. All seem to suffer from a lack of volume control. Not keen
on potentiometers - I use a switched resistor network for a passive
attenuator at the moment. The digital crossovers also only implement
IIR filters whereas I think the flexibility of FIR would be so much
better. Clearly these solutions will also require a huge amount of
manual fiddling to get the sound right. Will need some 3rd party
acoustic analysis software I expect (eg Siasoft SmaartLive). But I
think this is the cheaper and more effective approach.

3) Dump the Squeezebox. Go PC -> external DAC -> bi-amping

The idea is to run a convolver on the PC to do all the crossover, DRC,
phase and delay adjustments and then run it out to an external DAC (to
avoid the PC power supply). Not sure the DAC I want even exists -
ideally ASIO input and 6 or more balanced XLR's out + volume control.

One brief thought was to keep slimserver, use the Inguz Audio plug-in's
and modify softsqueeze to take multi-channel sound. Not likely. Other
alternatives are the foobar_dsp_xover, DirectX convolver or porting
BruteFIR.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xover
http://sourceforge.net/projects/convolver

Obviously a very flexible approach with endless tweaking.

No, I wouldn't dare try to sync two squeezeboxes :-)

But would be cool if Transporter v2 could do it all! 8-)

Do NOT ground the unused signal - it should be disconnected. Just wire
up + and gnd. See here:

I like your thinking Pat. A $3000 upgrade which the user can configure
without taking the lid off. Any volunteers willing to pay $5000 to see
if this works? I'm reluctantly willing to sell my Transporter for $5000
as soon as it arrives (purely in the interests of advancing the state of
