LOL
no, but you may wish to consider the variety of supported interfaces,
the capability for future upgrades, height, width depth and noise
floor, options for remote control etc. Balanced operation is generally
desirable, as is good imaging and wide dynamic range. Low jitter is a
must of course. If this is your first wife, then WAF is not an issue.
I recommend an extended home trial after studying the specs and test
reviews. When comparing alternative models, a DBT is usually very
difficult to organise...

Because for -b it says "Valid values are 8 or 16" I assume it doesn't
handle 24 bits.

I have the Bel Canto DAC 2 which sounds good with my unmodded SB3
until, that is I compare with my Audio Synthesis CD Transport through
same. With the CD transport while the sound very similar the CD
transport is somehow less coarse in midrange (Piano, Vocals, Guitar
etc) and gives the music more space and better soundstaging. Since the
audio synthesis uses its own modified SP/Dif output to presumably clean
up the clocking and reduce jitter I suspect that this is the key
difference so logically would expect the Boulder or SB+ to be more like
the CD transport.

To reinforce what Mark says, the speed of sound is roughly 1000 feet per
second, the low E string on a bass guitar is ~~ 41 HZ. Simple arithmetic
shows that the wavelength of a low E note is 1000/41 ~= 20 feet.
So bass notes, without even getting into organ pedal tones, are really
long. And when the wavelength is the same as a dimension of your room,
or even a multiple of the dimension, it is very bad.

The low E string on a standard guitar is ~ 82 HZ, which is about 12
feet. Up half an octave, and you are right at the 8 foot ceiling height
of millions of rooms all over America

That first link refutes my advice, so best take a look at it before
placing the sub.

However I can't say I agree with their advice regarding placement
always in the corner. Most of the time that leads to boomy bass for
me. But I find it gets much better if I move the sub out from the
corner a bit - even 6" is an improvement.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] subwoofer reponse

2007-02-17 Thread Mark Lanctot

Subwoofer placement is crucial.

Bass frequency sound waves are big, on the order of several feet. They
strongly interact with each other - if a peak hits a trough, they will
cancel each other out. If a peak hits a peak, they will reinforce each
other, producing overblown, boomy bass.

The bass you hear from a sub is a combination of direct sound and
reflected sound. Depending on your sitting position, you could be in a
zone of destructive interference (cancelled bass) for several critical
frequencies. Since the wavelength is different, the zones of
constructive and destructive interference move around for differerent
frequencies.

Here's something simple you can do - place the sub in your listening
position and start listening to bassy material. Make sure no one's
around because the next step is embarassing...pretend you're a sub!
Move around with your ear in the same position as the driver.
Investigate along walls and corners. You will find that the sound
changes, you'll get boominess and cancellations as you move along.
Settle on the best spot, where there's little boominess but no
cancellation either - you'll have to judge. Then move the sub to that
position.

You can also investigate the Inguz plugin. However it's best to get
placement right first, then use things like Inguz to go that extra
(small) step.

Do you really think mumbo-jumbo about how things sound will amount to
credibility, and even proof?

The hifi community don't even have a reasonable handle on why some
systems sound good wheras others sound boring. There is no general
concensus on what sounds good and what sounds like sh*t.

You simply have to take each person's statement as his/her personal
opinion. The same goes for any magazine reviewer

Ron Olsen;181176 Wrote:

You would think so, but it didn't happen that way. I was running
Energy C6's and they had always sounded like crap; muddy, boomy, etc.
Started hanging out on the various forums and learning when I realized
my 40 year old house didn't have very good wiring. If I turned up the
volume the lights would dim. The old Energy's started to sound pretty
good. That's when I got the SB and shortly after that I discovered
that one tweeter had been caved in either by movers or kids.

Thats when I started shopping for speakers and found the 803D online
used. Got a good deal, they look new, no audible defects, etc. Picked
up the amp and Dac and later got the Preamp. Can't imagine how crappy
this would all sound with my old flimsy overtaxed household wiring.

Now, having said all that, I'm also not convinced that this is
everyone's problem. My house was a product of the late 60's, early
70's tract housing boom. Every house in my neighborhood is the same
and they were all built quick and cheap. The power to the LR ran into
the DR and part of the Kit. This was powering the sound system too.
So, YMMV.

Cheers!

-Ben
