Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Using TP optical input - How?

2007-09-07 Thread MikeFish

I still get the loud burst of volume.
The fix must have been something to do with Slimserver7 and not the
firmware because if you go back a week or so when the nightly builds
were still on FW31 the problem had already gone. In fact the every
version of SS7 I have tried works. It only changed to FW32 last week
and had no affect on the digital inputs. I guessing SS7 handles the
digitals input plugin slightly differently.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3, best audio quality and sound level

2007-09-07 Thread testic

Hello,

I've just bought a SB3. I use the analog outputs in my good quality
pre-amplifier/amplifier.
I'm used to adjust sound level on my amp, not the listening device,
however I saw that the SB3 had volume adjustment.
So I guess that there is some kind of pre-amplifier in the SB3, is this
right, or is it normal functionality of the DAC to be able to adjust
line-level outputs voltage?

At what volume should I use the SB3, given that I would like control
volume on my pre-amplifier?

Or, to put it another way, what volume should I use if I want the SB3
to do the less audio processing as possible and let my pre-amp/amp do
it?

Thanks!

As Adam - I can't hear any degradition in quality when using the volume

I think we can add this to the ever-growing audio myth pile (you know -

By the way, even with true 24-bit audio I reckon you can probably lose

*digital* coax connection would necessarily produce an analog 60Hz hum

 but I could be mistaken.

It certainly is possible.

Much depends on the SPDIF transmitter/receiver circuit design. It
doesn't matter what signal is on the wire - it's whether or not it is
possible to make an electrical connection through to the
circuitary/metalwork. Any induced RF etc on either the ground or hot
wires can then cause issues - potentially.

Sometimes isolating impulse transformers are used which ameliorate this
issues - but not always.

2007-09-07 Thread amcluesent

The main SB3 volume control work in the digital domain, it's best to
leave this at 0Db/100%

If most music still sounds too loud compared to your other inputs to
the pre-amplifier/amplifier, use the slimserver web-interface and goto
Home / Player Settings for {SB3 name} / Audio.

In the PREAMP VOLUME CONTROL field, try some values so that the SB3
line-out level creates a similar volume to other line-in feeds to your
pre-amplifier/amplifier so you don't get a 'blast' when switching to
the SB3.

I would also suggest trying it with the SB3 wired to rule out h/w

Of course I don't have slimserver handy to look at, so I'm going to be
a little vague here:
You know how when you press Now Playing on the remote it cycles through
different displays? One of the options there is to have a 'buffer
fullness' bar where the 'time elapsed' bar is, but its not there by
default. Somewhere there is a box you tick to include it - maybe under
Player Settings-Display (in slimserver)?
The 965 kbps bitrate is how much it has to stream for that flac file,
which is why you may be having trouble - internet radio is usually only
around 128 kbps, which is far easier over a bad connection (plus
squeezenetwork doesn't have to hop to the server and back over
wireless, it streams directly from the access point to the SB3)

2007-09-07 Thread nuhi

Still not fixed for me.
If the music is paused switching to Optical Input will just produce
some glitches, not actual sound.
And switching from playing Optical will switch to music so that it
seems like playing but no sound.
Maybe only that last part is different, before it wouldn't move at all,
now the visualization responds but no sound.

Weird issue, no wonder they can't pin-point it when even we can't come
to the conclusion.

Well that was the answer. I set it to channel 1 and all is well. I must

Very many thanks for your swift and analytical response from over the

By now, I've also come along this problem now. It didn't occur at
first, but sometimes I get glitches now too (when selecting a digital
in). But simply turning off and on immediately fixes this. And by this,
I don't mean power cycling, just press power 2 short times (off, and
then back on). When is turned on, you get your digital input right
away.

Still not perfect, but I'm happy that it kinda works.

I would not call it luck really. I started this thread with the snap,
crackle and pop problem that I had on my SB3s in the UK (modded and
unmodded). Sean walked me through various ideas and isolated a few
problems. I bought the trans.. and have had problems but as I have been
away from the UK for 4 weeks the mind is fading as to what they are
still. I scanned the neighbourhood for other WiFi(s) around here and
this is the only one that was detected, I just used windows detect and
not a scanner. The SB3 was set to the normal channel 6 and, as I
wrote, I changed it to channel 1. A few songs are dropping out totally
when I start a web page, for example (I set the slim server priority to
high thinking it may be a polling problem), maybe CPU charge, I do not
know. But there is another chap that recently was experiencing the same
problem - about 10 or so mails previous.
I believe it is a problem as I have experienced the same type of thing
on 6 x SB3 and one transporter all of which have different amps etc.
Just do not really understand but I feel it is a good 'system';
especially the transporter.
Again, many thanks for your help even if you feel it was luck; it was
kind of you to help me and I can fly home to the UK tomorrow with
'piece' of mind.
Best,
Ivan

In addition, I am not sure that a ground loop through an unbalanced

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Warbling after 2 mins when listening to 24/96 FLAcs with Spec. Anlzr.

2007-09-07 Thread MikeFish

Hi
I downloaded some 24/96 FLACs from the Linn website yesterday. When
playing them the sound starts to kind of warbble after approximately 2
mins. It will stop as soon as I press a button on the remote and the
screensaver turns off (spectrum analyzer). If I use any other
screensaver there is no problem at all (I didn't try them all though).
Any ideas anyone? Not a problem as I just won't use the spectrum
analyzer now but has anyone seen this before?
I'm using Slimserver 7 (latest build) with Transporter FW32.
Could this be a bug with new Slimserver (or screensaver)?

easily good enough to transparently cope with anything that comes off a

I say this as a user of a Linn LP12/Lingo/Ittok/Karma - it's not as if

Contrast this to the price of the ATC SCA2 preamp, which costs about
 £4,000.

I don't really have an obsession about eliminating the preamp. I just
happen to think that it's worth doing if you can't afford the mega-price
 of a genuinely transparent preamp. I ditched a £2,500 preamp once I
heard the improvement gained by removing it from the system.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Design miss in SB3 digital output? or Slimserver problem ?

2007-09-07 Thread NewBuyer

Like 'truckfighters' and 'SoftWireEngineer', I too once recently had a
problem with my SB3 that was fixed by unplugging/replugging the power
source.

When turning on the stereo system, a low-level but mid-to-high tone
whining sound was coming through the speakers. I didn't know at first
what component it was coming from, and at that time I was using the
analog-outs of the SB3. During my troubleshooting steps, I noticed that
when I unplugged the network cable from the SB3, the sound stopped after
about 5-10 seconds (as the SB3 ultimately reacted to losing the network
connection). Since the sound did persist for that 5-10 second period
after unplugging the network cable, and since no other cable but the
power was connected to the SB3 at the time, the sound was clearly
coming from the SB3 itself and through its analog-outs.

Finally, unplugging/replugging the power connection at the SB3 got rid
of the whine sound - and fortunately it hasn't returned (although I am
running digital-out to a DAC now, so even if the issue did occur again,
it might not be as noticeable again).

That's exactly what I do with my 80GB iPod (which has too little
capacity for my library, so a 160GB Classic is soon on its way). I
sort of get around the conversion step by ripping everything in one
step to both gapless FLAC (managed by SlimServer/Ubuntu) and gapless
iTunes AAC (managed by iTunes/XP), which gives me lossless for my more
critical listening environment at home and lossy for fitting on my
portable player, which is almost always used in more challenging
environments where higher quality playback would be wasted.

Having my cake and eating it too :).
