What we want is sources which are accurate, including a flat FR, and then we can deal with the problems of each speaker and room on a case-by-case basis (change speaker, move rooms, improve room treatment and finally EQ). Otherwise you end up with a source tailored to one speaker / room and that is a small market. However, I agree with you about external DACs. Music is a combination of many frequencies all occurring at the same time, whereas a frequency sweep just does one frequency at a time. Hence you can have equipment that measures flat with a frequency sweep, but actually isn't with real music. This seems to be more obvious at the bass end, where the power supply simply runs out of steam, and the effect is not unlike putting a bigger/smaller power amplifier in the system. -- Patrick Dixon www.at-tunes.co.uk Patrick Dixon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=90 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40737 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Isn't it strange that all those mathematicians, physicists, and engineers have been going around using Fourier analysis for the last 150 years? Gee, I guess they were too stupid to realize that sounds are a combination of many frequencies all occurring at the same time, and that invalidates everything they were doing! What a revelation! Sorry Patrick, but that just ain't the way it works. In fact, as most of us learned in high school, any sound can be decomposed into a sum of pure tones, which add *linearly*, period, end of story. If the frequency response of an amp and speakers is flat, so is the response to music. (We could talk about distortion, but that's not what you said.) So you think the stock SB3 maxes out its power supply when playing bass-heavy music, and that can cause distortion. Odd, because a full-scale pure tone should draw MORE power than any music signal. Not only that, but (modulo variations in input and output impedance) the power is independent of frequency. (Not that it matters, since you could simply play a sweep to check.) I don't think I have audiophile ears, but I'm able to distinguish $2-3k amps or speakers from $500-$1k ones. (SB3-glass toslink-Zhaolu D3-MAC ultra silver RCA interlink vs. SB3-blue jeans RCA interlink / both to my integrated tube amp and Triangle Comete speakers) Zhaolu seems to provide slightly clearer details and better imaging. But, what makes a strickly fair comparison difficult is the difference in their analog output levels. The output vrms of Zhaolu D3 seems higher than SB3 (2.1 vrms). The analog output level of Musiland MD-10 is 3 vrms and certainly higher than SB3. It may bring some illusion. I think Zhaolu D3 or Musiland MD-10 may be a better idea than a $250 cable to improve the sound quality of SB3, but the actual improvement seems to be subtle. So when audiophiles say there is a huge difference, I assume ok, there may be a slightly audible difference. :) Give that man a cigar. Zhaolu seems to provide slightly clearer details and better imaging. But, what makes a strickly fair comparison difficult is the difference in their analog output levels. Louder signals means louder music, which always, *always* sounds better to humans. To test, you first have to equalize sound levels. Get at least a radio shack sound meter. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Any changes to FW v.83 that would effect sound?
JJZolx;247025 Wrote: I have no problem with real audiophiles, but they're a dying breed. True - they're mostly well into their retirements. People who love the hobby, can actually hear subtle differences and don't mind telling you so, and who also don't mind telling the ABX idiots and objectivists to go take a flying leap. I don't think they love the hobby so much as the status they think it confers. Nor do I think their hearing is any better than average - if anything, it's worse. What really bothers me about audiophiles is how they proselytize. It's as if their system isn't worth anything unless they can convince others how great it is. The result is a lot of misleading claims, some straight out lies, and a lot of wasted money on the part of innocent newcomers. All that said, there is something charming about such singular insanity, and AA is the best place to see it on full display. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40762 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is connected to your Transporter?
Just got my rack setup complete about two weeks ago. Here is what I'm planning: Transporter - Crestron CNX-PAD8a - AudioControl Avalon - Gallo Reference 3.1 with SubAmp I'm not sure if the PAD8a will introduce and sound issues, but it is there so I can also send the signal to other zones around the house. -- patrija patrija's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=380 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33868 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Looking for a small balanced mono amplifier...
Thanks -- they look very interesting. A little more powerful than perhaps I need and a little more expensive than I had hoped, but definitely one to go on the audition list. They even have a 30-day return policy. muski -- muski SB3-Bryston BP25DA-Bryston 4B SST-Wilson Watt Puppy 7 Transporter via XLR-Headroom Max Balanced Headphone Amp-Balanced AKG701s HD650s muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40791 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
