Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Not impressed with the Transporter

2008-04-15 Thread george_k

By the way, how big of a room do you have the 703s in? Could you have to
much speaker for the size room they are in or not enough
furniture/rugs/wall treatments to control excess upper and mid-bass
 reflections?

Last thoughts on the Tranporter, could you take it and an SB3 to your
local HiFi shop with a laptop?

The entire room is about 24'x12' but only half is used for a
listening/tv area the other area is using for dining. It's possible
that I don't have enough furniture...I'm a bachelor :)

I also thought about visiting my dealer as he's pretty good about
letting me play with his stuff but the truth is I'm pretty happy with
my setup the way it is.

I left the Transporter playing all night yesterday and all day today
while I'm at work. I don't believe in the concept of burn in but it
doesn't hurt to try.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter vs. old Audiolab gain/sensitivity

2008-04-15 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

Currently I have my TP connected via RCA to an Audiolab 8000S in
pre/power mode which again is connected to an Audiolab 8000P and
everything is bi-amped to my speakers. (I know, it's not true
bi-amping, and although I at the time thought it was beneficial, I
don't really know anymore)

I've decided I want to have a go at eliminating the 8000S and running
the TP directly via RCA to the 8000P. One problem is I don't know the
gain and sensitivity of the 8000P. The Audiolabs are from the original
series produced in the 90's. The official data for the newer series are
here:

http://www.audiolab.co.uk/model.php?id=3#

Does anybody know if the data for the old ones are the same? I tried
google but it isn't always clear whether its the new or old ones being
refered to. And I don't want to blow up anything. Also I had a look at

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ConnectToPowerAmp

and although I probably could understand it, I would be glad if anyone
could just tell the attenuation setting I need to use on the TP :)

Thanks for your answers.

Bjørn

Can't help you with the 8000P data you're looking for, but it's not
actually necessary to know it.

1. Connect the TP directly to the 8000P.
2. Before powering up the 8000P, turn the volume right down on the TP.
3. Now switch on the 8000P, and start playing something.
4. Gradually increase the volume on the TP until you achieve the
loudest playback you're ever likely to want. (If you get to full volume
and it's not loud enough, you need an active preamp).
5. Note the dB attenuation reported on the TP's display. This is the
amount of attenuation you need.
6. Power everything down, open up the TP and set the internal
attenuation accordingly.

Provided you make sure you start with the volume right down, you'll be
fine.

Thanks for you reply. Sound like a good idea. But I don't know how well
it would work. Assuming the amps specs are:

Input for full rated power: 1.0 V rms
Gain: 29.0 dB at 1 kHz
Rated output power: 100 W per channel into rated load impedance (8?),
150 W into 4?

I believe I would need to attenuate -6dB to get line level matching.
Using only the TP builtin attenuation I really can not get very close
to this, either -10dB or 0dB.

Quick answer: it's almost impossible to know. Trying to work it out with
calculations will take longer than just hooking the things up to see how
loud you want to go and what attenuation is required. Once you have that
info to hand, you can make some informed decisions about how to proceed.

SadieKate wrote:

Bi-amping usually means putting an electronic crossover after the
preamp. It splits the signals (stereo) into a high-frequency path and a
low frequncy path, which are then sent to separate amps, and on to the
speakers directly to the woofer and tweeter connections.

To do this, you need speakers that can have their internal connection
and crossover be bypassed.

In theory, amplifying the treble in one amp, and the bass in another,
will reduce distortion and make the load on each amp easier.

You run separate speaker cables, so the audio signals don't have any
chance to interfere.

So you have one preamp, the electronic crossover, two power amps, two
sets of speaker cables.

I suppose you could extend this to three or four amps, if your speakers
have that many connections, and your budget is sufficiently large.

You are fine here - you want maximum voltage (not power) transfer in
line-level audio, so making sure the load input impedance is at least
10 times the source output impedance is the guideline here when using
unbalanced connections. I believe it is the same when using balanced
connections - anyone know otherwise?

Mine are quad-amped :).

But you don't need an external crossover to bi-amp. It's not clear
what the benefits will be, but if you have a pair of speakers with two
pairs of binding posts you can disconnect the bridge between them and
then use one two-channel amp to power the woofers and one to power the
tweeters (horizontal bi-amping) or one amp per speaker (vertical
bi-amping).

This is horizontal bi-amping:

http://www.rogershifi.com/images/tips-biamp.gif

and this is vertical (the crossover here could be replaced with just a
Y splitter cable):

I don't see any reason to do bi-tri amping without the external
crossover. You'd be sending the whole signal to each amp, and on to the
tweeter or woofer. What's the tweeter going to do with a 50Hz signal?

In theory, it takes much less power to drive tweeters, so you could have
a 20 watt amp for the highs and a 400 watt amp for the woofer.

Mostly, I think this is really a way to prove that you have too much money.

It won't see a 50Hz signal, because the (passive) crossover in the

But I agree that the benefits of this are not obvious, at least so long
as the amps are not clipping.

You might just have another amp lying around and want to try it.

In my case I'm using a relatively inexpensive 12 channel distribution
amp fed by an active crossover custom designed for these speakers. The
amp plus crossover costs much less than many audiophile 2-channel amps.

OK, I'm missing something here.

You remove the jumper on the speaker between the woofer and tweeter,
bypassing the internal crossover in the speaker. Where is the (passive)

If you happen to have a spare amp or 12, sure, try it. Otherwise, this
