[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What happened to the Sonic Impact Super T?

2008-04-24 Thread Gus

For a while there, you heard lots about these amps
(http://www.stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/1006sonic/) but now it looks
as though they've been discontinued. I was considering getting a couple
to hook up to one pair of Krix Holographix speakers in the kitchen and a
pair of Krix Equinox bookshelf speakers in the bedroom, but now that I'm
looking to buy they've disappeared. Does anyone know whether we'll be
seeing a new, improved version, or a similar budget/quality
replacement.

Gus
(PS - Also, any views on whether or not this a reasonable choice of amp
for these speakers would also be helpful)!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and ATC SCM150 Anniversary

2008-04-24 Thread Tim-Ann

Hi there,

Many thanks for that information I've tried running a Transporter
balanced direct into a Meridian G57 and I don't think at times it goes
loud enough for me, I've also used the TP through a Meridian 800 V3
Pre-Amp section and that had far more volume.

So I'm not sure what to expect running the TP direct into the ATC
150's. I was hoping to avoid a Pre-Amp but will have to try and if it
doesn’t go loud enough for me put a Pre-Amp in between.

Again many thanks for your help and info, Tim.

I've owned both the original (non super) T-amp and the new one wolfzell
linked to - the new one is far, far better. In fact if it's power
output you're interested in, I think the specs of the new amp are
better than the old super T-amp.

I have the current model hooked up to a pair of regular bookeshelf
speakers and at half volume it's plenty loud enough to rock out, and
with tons of bass (which was the main problem I had with the first
model).

Horns aren't supposed to be curled up, it's just that the often are
because they take up less space that way.

You know why horns are used, right? And why they're so efficient?
Acoustic impedance matching. It doesn't matter if the horn is straight
or curled, as long as the diameter tapers smoothly.

I would think that while double brandy listening test may not be
quite as reliable as a double blind listening test, it must sure as
hell be a lot more fun. Plus no painful forks in the eyes are
required.

In fact, careful and frequent use of double brandies would go a long
way in helping to relieve the lack of an analog playback system.
Luckily in the Netherlands there is another way to safely and legally
relieve the pain of no LPs but it does require visits one's local
coffeeshop every now and then.

Hello Everybody,

Tripath filed for bankruptcy protection. Another Electronics Company
bought them up. Production of the Tripath TA-2024 (15W by 2) has
stopped. Tripath chips are still being produced by the new parent
company but only the 100-watt and above chips.

The Sonic Impact T Amp with the curved plastic top has the exact same
chip and exact same output specs as the Sonic Impact Super T Amp. The
difference was how they were packaged and what type of input and
outputs they had on the box. The T amp has squeeze terminals and Super
T has binding posts and gold plated RCAs. The case on the Super T looks
more audiophile while the case on the original T amp looks more Mattel.

The Super T Amp is no longer in production. They are available from
people that bought them for $159 and now want to double their money.
The Super T Amp NOS sells for $299.95
http://cgi.ebay.com/SONIC-IMPACT-AUDIO-AMPLIFIER-SUPER-T-AMP-5062-TAMP-NEW_W0QQitemZ290219886520QQihZ019QQcategoryZ3280QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

That is a bunch of money to spend when the Sonic Impact Gen 2 looks
nice and sells for $80. The Gen 2 also has a cleaned up and redesigned
circuit board. The Super T Amps are notorious for cold solder joints.

Sonic Impact Technologies bought up every TA-2024 they could get their
hands on. The Gen 2 has squeeze terminal speaker outputs, a single 3.5
stereo input (which comes with a 3.5 male to stereo female RCA
adapter), and 3.5 stereo headphone jack. It will run for about 12 hours
nearly wide open on 8 AA batteries and also has a wall wart. It is 15x2
watts just as the other Sonic Impacts were.

Hope this helps. I have a JPEG of the external photo layout sheet but
it is to big to attach. Anybody that would like a copy, please PM an
Email address to send it to.

Yes, you are completely right, if you want to find an all digital

they are always there relieving the alienated pain of not having vinyl.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What happened to the Sonic Impact Super T?

2008-04-24 Thread radish

iPhone;295127 Wrote:
It is 15x2 watts just as the other Sonic Impacts were.

I read somewhere that they did make some changes to the output
characteristics with the Gen 2, I think there was a bass rolloff on the
original which was fixed? Something like that. Anyway, I had both and
the gen 2 certainly sounds a lot better to me, and louder.

A little googling found this (from
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread/t-109033.html):

The 2nd Gen is not a bass lightweight like the 1st Gen. In fact it has
noticeably more power through the lower registers than my JVC Hybrid
Feedback amp I have been using, which was significantly more powerful
than the 1st Gen I had been using before it burnt out. It also seems
somewhat more powerful, even though JVC rated their amp at 30wpc into
4ohm. Using Live Free or Die Hard DVD as a reference, the JVC, at
maximum volume, provided what I would call reference level in my small
space, theater level sound, distortion free, through explosions and
whatnot. Using the 2nd Gen under the same conditions was louder,
basically too loud to handle for any real period of time, even though
it proved to be noticeably more clear and legible (more easily making
out dialog against noise, including on example where I had not ever
been able to make out a certain phrase at all using the JVC on speakers
 or my Grado SR-80 headphones).

Since I haven't heard a 1st Gen in a very long time, I'm going to
assume that my recollection of exactly how it sounded is worthless.
Besides, I'm not using the same speakers as back then. In fact, I'm not
using my speakers at all at the moment . . . they're in the shop. I'm
listening over a pair of Pioneer A11 BiBs, and I can only compare
directly between the 2nd Gen and the JVC. There was an immediate and
surprising improvement between the JVC and the 2nd Gen. Not only was
the bass of similar liveliness and weight and somewhat tighter detail,
but there were greater improvements upward in frequency. Clarity,
detail, soundstage . . . everything is better. So, my guess, just
thinking technically, the 2nd Gen is likely a slight upgrade, enough to
overcome the 100Hz rolloff of the 1st Gen, with likely similar, slight
improvements all around. I'm also guessing that alot of improvement
gained in my circumstance comes from the included power supply. Its
quite a bit beefier than the one I had for my old 1st Gen, and a much
 better match.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, there's an outfit in Sweden that
does kit amps using the Tripath chips. See www.41hz.com.

I've built the AMP6, which is the low-end one using a TA2020 chip. It
was pretty easy to put together. (The other kits use quite a few
surface mount components, and I for one don't feel comfortable with
doing a lot of those. The AMP6 only has about a dozen SMDs - diodes and
inductors, nothing really fiddly like you see in a Squeezebox).

I would have to agree with your opinion. The Gen 2 is an improvement
over the original. The switching power supply is better. The new
circuit board is a huge improvement plus bigger and better caps. There
are no excess blobs of solder on the board as there was with the
original. These little units are easy to tweak to get some more
performance out of them, like running them for off a 12VDC car battery.
The Gen 1 was a steal at $39 for all the things it could be used for.
The Gen 2 is still a good deal at $80 when all you need is a small amp.
And it has volume control to boot!

What I thought of a long time ago was to setup a music storage service
like Music Locker but allow anybody paying to store music access to all
stored files (listen/read only not able to download). The RIAA said no

Some of the stuff I recorded goes back as far as the mid-1980s. I used
a Sony PCM-701ES digital adapter, later a pair of ADAT recorders.
What's cool, though, is that all of my recordings, even back in the
mid-1980s, are done with a digital recorder of some sort. I still have
a PCM-501ES to play back the F1 tapes, but I'd have to borrow an ADAT to
play those; I sold my ADATs.

Sorry, but to be fair to those involved, I should probably not post
this stuff to the Internet. Some of the recordings are demo tapes,
which I recorded at the request of the band for their use, while with
others, they were recorded from the PA sound board as I was running it
for my own use as a tool to evaluate the mix.

Er, I would not phrase it this way.

Sean, knower of all engineering on TP and Squeezeboxen, says you should
setup your amp so that you can run 0 dB and not destroy anything.
Especially not burn up audiophile speakers. Its OK if the 0 dB setting
it too loud for long term listening, but you don't want it to be 130 dB
either.

Which means using attenuators if the non-volume adjusted signal is too
loud. There are many fixed and inexpensive audiophile attenuators listed
in the forum archives.

This approach allows you to turn down the volume with the remote, say a
Controller, for comfort, but still be safe in case something happens
that causes it to go WFO.

The transporter is a computer. While its more reliable than most
computers, I would not try to enumerate all possible ways for a computer
  to mess up.

The speakers you save may be your own.
