[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter suddenly dead and not responding to anything
I think my transporter is completely dead. While listening to music today it suddenly switched off. Now it is not responding to front panel or remote or anything other. I tried removing power cable and any type of reset but nothing helps. While plugging power in even the clicking sound of the sound power relay is missing. I immediately wrote a mail to logitech support (support form is down, but I had an support e-mail address from some earlier warranty communication). Anyone with similar experiences? I hope they will find a quick solution. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB Server settings advice
I wondered if i could get some input on the best use of the settings in Sqeezebox Server for optimal sound quality. I use the Transporter AES/EBU digital out to a Berkeley DAC. Files are ripped to FLAC from redbook, no high resolution files for now, on a Windows Vista laptop (until i decide on the best storage option). It seems the software has evolved over time and there are many options/settings related to audio, file conversion, sample rates etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. -- richardw richardw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32135 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70314 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB Server settings advice
For Squeezebox Server there's no good reason to use anything but FLAC for the file format. Your choices for streaming the FLAC files are 1) as FLAC (natively decoded in the Transporter) 2) as uncompressed PCM, whereby Squeezebox Server decodes the file at the server computer The first is the default setting. The second can be had by going to Settings Advanced File Types and changing Code: File Format Stream Format Decoder FLAC FLACNative PCM flac to: Code: File Format Stream Format Decoder FLAC FLACDisabled PCM flac The disadvantage of the second is that it requires more bandwidth (generally, about twice as much) to stream the music to your player. If you're using a wireless connection, this may result in dropouts. The probability will increase if you stream hi-res formats like this. If you have a wired connection, you'll have plenty of bandwidth. FWIW, I hear no difference on my system streaming either way. Try using PCM and if you think it's better and you don't experience dropouts, use it. Otherwise, keep the default settings and enjoy. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70314 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Phase?
This isn't TP or SB specific but I thought I'd give it a shot here since I can't find any real good info on it: My DAC has the ability to invert Phase from 0º to 180º. I can't tell the difference. Should I be able to? How can I tell if I'm in need of Phase Inversion? Can I buy a Dilithium Crystal Phase Inversion field to prevent catastrophic mixing of phase and anti-phase? I'm guessing that I need to switch it when I listen to Canadian artists. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB Server settings advice
There shouldn't be any settings you NEED to change in the defaults. The only thing you may want to change is to set the volume to fixed 100% so the DAC gets the native file data and doesn't do any volume scaling. Sending FLAC to any squeezebox is the optimal setting for quality, compatibility, and bandwidth. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70314 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

There is no sound quality difference between the coax or Toslink. They are both transmitting binary code not an audio signal. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3+DAC: Optical or coaxial best?
There is almost difference. Optical induced jitter through the DAC magic should not be an issue. And the because the DAC Magic is a 24bit system it should handle the optional 24 bit resolution. That is assuming that the duets' receiver optical output is 24 bit. Outside opinions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF S/PDIF specifies a Data Link Layer protocol and choice of Physical Layer specifications for carrying digital audio signals between devices and stereo components over either optical or electrical cable. The name stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format (more commonly known as Sony Philips Digital InterFace), the two companies being the primary designers of the S/PDIF format. It is part of a larger collection of international standards known as IEC and defined by IEC 60958 (often referred to as AES/EBU), where it is known as IEC 60958 type II. S/PDIF is essentially a minor modification of the original AES/EBU standard for consumer use, providing small differences in the protocol and requiring less-expensive hardware. There are no differences between the signals transmitted over optical or coaxial S/PDIF connectorsboth carry exactly the same information. Selection of one over the other rests mainly on the availability of appropriate connectors on the chosen equipment and the preference and convenience of the user. TOSLINK cables do not work well (and may even suffer permanent damage) if tightly bended, and their high light-signal attenuation limits their effective range to 6.1 metres (20 ft) or so. On the other hand, TOSLINK cables are not susceptible to ground loops and RF interference, like coaxial cables.[1] Another deciding factor for many is cost: any standard 75 #937; A/V cable can be used for coaxial connectivity, while TOSLINK requires a specific cable which, until recently, was not very affordable. So, in this scenario the grounding is an issue and the Toslink is resolving his problem. Otherwise, the Coax is an easier and cheaper alternative. Please remember there isn't always THE answer, sometimes there are multiple best solution answers. -- sgumnit sgumnit's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23018 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69641 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Actually, the Dilithium Crystal should allow for non-catastrophic mixing of phase/anti-phase. To quote -The Mineralogy of Star Trek- by Jeffrey de Fourestier, et. al. (Ottawa, Ontario) ...when dilithium is subjected to a high frequency electromagnetic field, it becomes porous to antimatter, and that it is the only substance known to possess this quality. Dont put the DAC on the amp. Dont put anything on the amp. First of all - The Rotel is second rate. Sorry - I had a Proton back in the 80's. It was great so I thought. It's all relative.
