Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-03-12 Thread soundcheck

I had a look again into Playback.lua -the file where I lock the VC to
100%.

If you look at the code and the mod, I'd 100% support all those folks
saying that there can't (or better shouldn't) be any difference. You
hand over the same value to a function decode. If you take the last
value of the gain coefficients or if you apply a fixed value. The
result should be 100% the same. That looks really trivial. Though this
has been a known fact.

My question would be what role the fade-in/fade-out function plays.
That's probably the only function that manipulates the volume. In my
case is turned off though.

BTW. Q to any of the designers following the this thread: Is there a
way to
change prefs (e.g. logging) from commandline on the Touch. Where are
the prefs and logs stored on the Touch?

One more Q: Is the gain value array (consists of 100 fixed values per
VC step) kept on the Touch only, or are these arrays also kept and
communicated by each and every client?

(Please excuse my limited lua knowledge. I'm just getting myself a bit
deeper into it.)

Cheers

Too early to say yet how good the M1 is - I've only managed 2 hours
listening.

I am in discussions regarding having the M1 modded, but I'm in no
hurry.

I think that MF DO have reasonable clocks - but not GREAT clocks, and I
believe that great clocks are needed (and great, clean supplies for
those clocks). MF have good circuit designs IMO, but they are let down
by some less than stellar choices of components - they are built down
to a price point.

However, the basics are very good - the choke-filtered power supplies
generally only need diodes changing to hexfreds or schottkys.

Caps and analogue stage opamps tend to be cooking rather
gourmet...

If you want to know why I got the M1... it's black, not silver and the
rest of my system is black/maple and we've redecorated and...

After doing that free and easy upgrade, if you have some extra cash, go
 for the liner PSU.

I've already looked at the software mod ideas from Soundcheck - and
even suggested one of my own which he liked. He commented on finding
the right balance between streaming native PCM to the SBT in order to
minimise the processing overhead on the Touch - but if you do this with
large 24 bit files the balance may be tipped because the wireless
decryption will consume more resources. Wired connectivity is better
but you still have ground connections between the two devices to be
concerned about (and you will need your NAS box or whatever on the same
hi-fi shelf). My suggestion was to setup a separate point to point
wireless connection to the server without wireless encryption
eliminating the decryption overheads and the physical connection
between the two.

The jury is out (for me at least) when it comes to upgrading the power
supply at all - especially considering the disproportionate costs
involved. I say this because apparently there are switched power units
'inside' the Touch which then get carefully regulated, so what's the
point when you can never completely get rid of this switched mode
operation because it's wrapped in the case?!

It's like when I emailed Arcam about a suggested power supply upgrade
to their switched mode supply for the rDac (when I was considering an
rDac) - they commented that they have engineered in massive amounts of
power supply rejection into the rDac to the point at which we could not
tell the difference between a reference on bench scientific power supply
and the carefully chosen switch mode supplied with the rDac. So chaps -
if you have an rDac - don't bother spending money on a fancy

As I've said many times, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with SMPS
technology for audio when done PROPERLY - several top high-end
manufacturers use it.
The problems start when they aren't done properly...

Both linear and battery supplies have their own issues. It's not about
the technology per se, it's about the implementation in all cases.

Log is written to /var/log/messages
You can change log levels via the menu: Settings-Advanced
Settings-Log
'audio.decode' is the channel that writes gain-values to the log.

Looking into the 'LogSettingsApplet' (which provides the menu to change
log-levels) the log config is saved to System:getUserDir() ..
/logconf.lua

You should be able to find that file by just searching for it.

One more Q: Is the gain value array (consists of 100 fixed values per
VC step) kept on the Touch only, or are these arrays also kept and
communicated by each and every client?

Guess the server has the same curve saved, because via cometd (the
protocol used to communicate that a players volume should be changed)
you set values between 0-99 (that's also the range/resolution of the
volume slider of the Touch)

SlimProto (the protocol that communicates the effective volume to each
players) uses the range 0-65536 to transmit volume values (based on the
volume curve).

On the Touch the 0-65536 values are reverted back to the 0-99 scale,
just to convert them again (using the same volume curve) back to
0-65536 (which is the range the audio hardware expects). The code looks
like someone planned to convert one volume-curve to another, but that
never happened.

Anyway - my code review of all these conversion cannot spot any flaw
(as can also be seen/proved in the log files of my Squeezebox).

I believe I've read somewhere your problem *may* have something to do
with some database performance issue for which a fix has already been

If you feel brave enough, you may give the 7.5.4 latest nightly a

If you don't, best thing to do would be to give your local Logitech

I have no idea when the final 7.5.4 version will be released, however.

Good luck.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] RC (Inguz etc.)

2011-03-12 Thread darrenyeats

All,
Just a reminder that room modes lead to overemphasis or underemphasis
of certain frequencies at certain locations in the room. Changing the
position of your loudspeakers can mix up the reinforcement and
cancellation effects from standing waves so that variations throughout
the room are less stark. Once you've done that, experiment with the
position of the general seating area to find a place where the bass
response is most even. You might be surprised about what you can
achieve. Then, once this is done, that's the time to use DSP if you
want more.

With optimal positioning and even with DSP, the room modes will still
have a higher RT60 (longer reverb) than other frequencies. Bass
treatments of some kind are usually a good idea to even out the RT60 in
the bass.

Don't get me wrong, my opinion is that DSP is a valid solution many
times, at least when it comes to bass.

2011-03-12 Thread earwaxer9

Lousy sounding CD's has been a fact of life for me as a 60's, 70's
rocker. I can give numerous examples from the Stones to Genesis. Thin
recordings lacking in depth. No 'meat on the bones'.

I'm not sure if the LP's sounded better (in the time). I think they
did. Due to several factors. Large efficient speakers (horns and 12, or
15 inch woofers) with tube amps was one factor. Not there now. Not a
problem, just need to adapt. One blessing is disguise. It makes it easy
for me to hear differences in the tweaks. Good tweaks will flesh out the
bones.

One album I really like - Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones. Nasty
sounding CD, that is much more listenable now. I can say I even enjoy
it loud. I know, I should be a classical fan. Believe me I have tried!
I do like The Planets. Of course, what self respecting burn out
doesn't like that piece!

I find that Jeff Beck sounds best with 1/2 meter long interconnects and
4 meter speaker cable. Using shorter cables makes Beck sound choppy and
longer length cables make him sound overly rich. The sad part is that
Clapton needs 1 meter interconnects and 3 meter speaker cables to sound
best, therefore I tend to listen mostly to jazz, which luckily all
sounds good with 1 meter interconnects and 5 meter speaker cables.
Nothing ruins a good listening session like having to change cables and
wires with each recording.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is Transporter compatible with CAT6 cabling?

2011-03-12 Thread Stratmangler

F**k - Cat6e is a pain in the nuts to strip back and terminate.
Now there's all that additional foil screen to deal with - that's gonna
cost in installation time, and no-one's gonna be prepared to pay for the
extra work involved !

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why do things sound the way they do?

2011-03-12 Thread bits

I'll chime in about the difference of the images on a Mac(or any
machine).

Many decoders suffer from rounding errors or simply wrong
implementations of a standard.
Many jpeg decoders sacrifice accurate decoding for the sake of speed.

The image might not be align correctly on the monitors pixels due to
the browsers own logic.

So the difference between Safari and Firefox(all undefined versions as
well btw!):
-non ISO compliant jpeg decoder
-pixels not aligned on screen. This could be caused by the browser not
putting the image in a nice spot. It could be caused by the rendering
engine with its code deliberately rounding things to increase speed or
to keep the maths sane.
-other image tampering for whatever purpose the browser developers do.
-any or all of the above could be deliberate or unknown bugs.

The only thing that is known for sure is that it has nothing at all to
do with a digital to analog conversion. It is purely different maths
used in the two browsers.

One said 7x7 = 49 the other said 7x7=49.1 or whatever.

For what its worth I know nothing about violins but I would say the
varnish is a very small piece to the overall reason for why one violin
might sound better than the next. It might help a tiny bit but much
bigger and realistic wins could be found elsewhere.

Why do it? The ethernet port on your transporter is only capable of
100mbit/sec, standard cat5 was capable of that over a 100m run.

Would you replace the perfectly capable and fine power lead on your
kettle for $10?

Can I respectfully keep my hand down depending upon the circumstances?
:) Are we comparing cruddy thin gauge wire with a high quality much
thicker stranded gauge wire, or a $1000 set with unobtainium coated
connects versus a $2000 set with solid unobtainium connectors? Low
grade thin gauge versus good quality thick gauge, yeah, you should hear
a difference if your system is up to it. Where it gets hazy is when you
start spending hundreds or thousands of $$$. Like so much in Hi-Fi, it
is all about diminishing returns,,

Stranding only helps when it's Litz. But even then the effect on audio
frequency range is minimal.

Yes thats the q speaker cables can make difference if they are
technically unsuitable for that particular speaker :) so what kind of
cable to wich speaker ? If you have low impedance planar speakers or
similar.

If inductance and resitance is very low it's ok, but you dont need to
much $ to fix that, keep them short and thick.

Interesting, but not really my point. My point: a high grade, thicker
gauge wire is going to perform better, and thus sound better, than some
thin gauge zip wire that you buy at Radio Shack. Anything more than that
is probably a waste of money.

It all has to do with the ability of the wire to carry the electrical
signal AND current. Putting a skinny ass wire between a big ass amp and
watt hungry speakers is like trying to wire your house with 24 gauge
wire. The wire will not be able to handle the current and amperage,
Cheap and thin speaker wire will inhibit the ability of your amp to
drive your speakers properly.
