Hi soundcheck, i hv been off line for a few days and thanks v much for your reply: 1. I checked the 44.1/16 and its stable 2. I run it wired, on a dlink 655 router, shielded cat5 (am getting cat6a but can tfnd good ones) to a dlink hub 1005d, unshield patch cord to touch and then spdif toslink to dac. 3. I tried the 100bps half duplex mode and it works smoothly 4. When i first initially set it up i said it works smoothly because i was playing radio.. 5. I usually set flac decode native on touch rather than pcm coz i have some 192 music, i tried flac pcm but did not solve the crackling problem. 6. I looked into the qos, but there arent much things there that i understand.. Would you recommend that i use the half duplex mode instead? Or the default auto mode? Is there any specific qos setting i should modify that could solve the problem? The server is totally dedicated for touch. Btw, the linear psu for hub that you recommend, would just any 5v1a linear psu works? There some no brand wall plug type linear psu i find here in china which cost just maybe 20usd, i can't find any better ones in a metal box.. Many thanks! [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Shielded Mains Cables
Recently I've been investigating RFI/EMI around my system. This followed a complete re-wiring that I completed after I had a new floor laid in the lounge and had to dismantle everything. My system is pretty complex - 30 mains/power cables! Anyway, most of my system has shielded (or twisted) mains IEC leads. However, three items didn't: 1) LCD TV (basically a computer) 2) Blu-ray player (basically a computer) 3) SKY HD box (basically a computer). I replaced the leads with shielded ones - the Sky and Blu-ray needed Telefunken-IED adaptors, which I got from Russ Andrews. The cables were not exotic but were well made and very reasonably priced from eBAY. Even though two of the three items are in standby mode (the SKY box is nearly always active!) when listening to music, there is still some detectable RFI coming from their normal mains leads - this has now been pretty much eliminated. I have an Elfix detector that can pick up RFI (although it is rather crude - but effective). Early listening tests indicate a very slightly more relaxed sound. Certainly worth investigating as a low cost tweak. To be clear I don't believe this has anything to do with the cables themselves, but in the general reduction in RF around/near the system which MAY be affecting the amps, DAC or even Touch. I also relocated the base station for my wireless phone to the opposite end of the house at the same time. Next step is to examine the various cheap and nasty SMPS's that I have nearby which supply: 1) wireless router 2) LCD photoframe 3) external USB drive 4) USB hub I have attached ferrite clamps to all DC leads from these already. However, I see that locating any kind of linear DC supplies is getting harder - especially for the 1 amp+ variety ! -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... An aluminum top plate like that will support surface acoustic waves, these reflect off the edges and create standing waves. This gives rise to fairly high Q resonances in the audio range (the infamous rings like a bell). The vibrations from these resonances WILL increase the jitter of any crystal oscillators in the box. Putting a complex engraving on the surface causes the surface acoustic waves to bounce around in all different directions, thus breaking up the standing waves and preventing the resonances from happening, thus lowering the jitter of the oscillators. I've done this on my own equipment using aluminum plates, it really does prevent the resonances from happening and is far more effective at vibration control than most techniques such as cones etc. John S. -- JohnSwenson JohnSwenson's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5974 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87286 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Problem when Playing WAW on SBT
Hi. I have a problem with playing WAW files usually 96k/24b on SBT. Then the sound coming out of the SBT sounds like a FM tuner that is tuned in between two stations. (Noise only). Well It Usually the first couple of times works OK when I start to play a song. Then the Noise comes every time i start to play a WAW file. It is possible to play Flac and MP3 files. But when I return to play WAW, the Noise returns. I have setup the Squeezebox server to play the waw files following: In filetypes: WAW Flac Deactivated MP3 Deactivated PCM Native There are No problem with noise, only wonderful music in the speakers when: 1) When I play the same 96k/24bWAW files using the buildin SBS in the SBT. (in this case the SBS in the SBT does NOT Convert using sox) 2) setup the Squeezebox server to play WAW Flac Flac/sox MP3 Deactivated PCM Native I have tested this problem and it occurs on Squeezebox server ver: officiel releases 7.5.3, 7.5.4 and two builds(32302 and 32364) of the 7.6.0 It is tested using two different MAC computers. (2.53GHz Mac mini and 2.66GHzMac Book Pro.) both running OSX 10.6.7. Both running via WLan. I have only tested the Spdif Coax output because I'm using an external DAC. The problem is only when playing WAW files. Then why do I play WAW instead of Flac? I have read Soundchecks threads and studied his Toolbox in following link: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84742 When reading that Soundcheck could hear different between transcoding and Native playing Flac files. Then I asked my self why in the world playing FLAC when the HDD today has the size enough for WAW files. I also converted some Flac files(HDtrack downloaded) to WAW and did A-B tests between Flac and WAW. and Sorry to say it but every time the WAW file was played the sound was much more realistic, better perspective, depth, micro dynamics etc. This was tested when playing the files from a USB memory stick via the buildin SBS in the SBT Please see 1). I then wanted to make the same test using the same setting of files on the Squeezebox server Please see 2). and now only Noise comes out of the speakers. I have attached a log file that should include the issue. Does anybody have the same issue? and a solution to fix it? +---+ |Filename: slimserver27042011.log.zip | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11775| +---+ -- Caad Caad's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9350 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87331 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I've recently added an Audio Analogue Maestro Setanta to my TP. Using balanced, the change in tone is massive. Single-ended was OK, but definitely 'thin' and 'toppy' on much material. On balanced, the 'sizzle' has been toned down and there's a much richer, fuller sound. -- amcluesent amcluesent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76644 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0
Not long got my SBT sorted with the toolbox mods, wired straight to my router, through the lounge, kitchen and conservatory. A new area for my ears to get in tune with I believe, a cymbal, with my SB2 sounded good to me, with the touch factory settings, it was quite easy to tell the SB2 was somewhat out of focus, maybe the cymbal source sound came from about a 4 foot wide source of sound, with the touch in play sounded far more like a pin point source of sound, untill the mods were applied and they made the factory touch sound out of focus, by about a foot wide sound source point, to what now seems like a pin point sound source, in comparison... :-D Cool Stuff!! Put the long wire away, plugged in my SB2 as a wireless bridge, and lost some focus :-( -Going to try a linear psu for the SB2 soon one hopes- fingers crossed it may get close to the wired sound. Quite amazed at the effect of these mods, A HUGE THANK YOU, to you Klaus for developing such a modification toolkit, very clever stuff!! -- Deaf Cat Deaf Cat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=515 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84742 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Problem when Playing WAW on SBT
There are no errors in the log, I suspect your problem lies in the way some of your wav files have been created. It is possible that some of them have non-standard headers. Also you are MUCH better to keep your files on disk as FLAC and get proper tagging and better integration with SBS. If you really want to stream them as PCM to your Touch then you can do this. However, please note that if you are streaming wav as pcm or flac as pcm you cannot use 176.4 or 192 files, because SOX is not invoked in these modes. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Connect Transporter Directly to Focal Solo6 Studio Monitors
Hello all, after years of owning a dozen Squeezebox devices and enjoying them at home and in the office, now is time for my first post - good to be here. I'm a proud new owner of Transporter SE (the model where the TransNav knob is removed). I'm connecting the Transporter directly to my Focal Solo6 Be powered speakers via balanced XLRs, no preamp in between, except a NHT Passive Volume Control (PVC Pro basically a balanced level attenuator). Transporter digital volume is fixed at 100%, and I manually adjust the volume on NHT PVC Pro. As all the experts in this forum know, the Transporter's balanced analog output is 3V rms and fixed at -0dB attenuation. On the Focal powered speakers, I have two Input Sensitivity options: +4dBu and -10dBV. According to Focal, The +4dBu position is suitable for standard professional audio equipment, while -10dBV position may be used for other types of sources providing a lesser output level. My question is which Input Sensitivity option I should select on the Focal speakers to properly work with the output coming directly from the Transporter XLRs? +4dBu or -10dBV? Thank you! BTW, in case it matters to the answer to my question, soon I will add the matching Focal Sub6 powered subwoofer to this configuration, and also replace the NHT PVC Pro with Goldpoint SA2XM-I (4-section stepped attenuator) for balanced level control on both of the stereo channels. -- reachpeng reachpeng's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46126 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87335 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] can we have our digital cake and eat it too?
So.. I've been listening now for a few. Sure, granted, my sessions are a bit on the hammered side! What I can say so farFatigue on the softer filter is less. I have about half of my collection converted to the more intermediate filter. When I shuffle the songs I frequently cant remember what filer has been applied. My accuracy is about 50/50 on whether it has the hard or soft. Not real good on the DBT. When I reflect on the sound, even if I get the guess wrong, I can say that the softer filter is a bit more agreeable. Not a big difference though. Thats good. I have probably gotten used to the crisper highs of the hard filter. Its probably not very real though. Enjoyment is what its about! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Connect Transporter Directly to Focal Solo6 Studio Monitors
Using your balanced Transporter outputs, to the balanced inputs on the Focals: The +4dbu setting would be the most appropriate. The -10dbv setting could probably be used, but *may* result in having to turn something down excessively to achieve a satisfactory listening level. This is poor gain staging, and reduces S/N ratio, and can introduce issues with sometimes uneven volume control tracking near the extremes of the pot travel. -- Curt962 Transporter...TouchBoom.. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Connect Transporter Directly to Focal Solo6 Studio Monitors
Thank you Curt962! I experimented briefly with both, and I would agree with you. +4 sounds good. -10 sounds loud. -10 did not sound bad, but clearly the Focal's built-in amp took it up a notch to compensate for what it believes to be a lesser level of source input. Initially I thought -10 was the better setting for the Focal, because it sounded loud and full bodied, much more so than +4 (for the same volume on the passive NHT PVC Pro). But when I cranked up the volume, the level became way too high... When I went back to the +4 setting on the Focal, and turned up the volume on PVC by about 12dB, I was able to achieve about the same loudness as the -10 setting. And as I turn the volume towards the max, it gets very loud, but not unbearable. Unlike the -10 setting at high volume, +4 did not become excessive. This leads me to believe that if the balanced outputs are plugged straight into the Focal's balanced inputs, without even the passive attenuator in between, the level matching would be just about right - I guess it is referred to as maximum listening level. With the attenuator, I can then dial the volume back down from the max to a comfortable listening level without losing any S/N ratio. -- reachpeng reachpeng's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46126 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87335 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Shielded Mains Cables
I had a 20ft cat7 ethernet connection to my Transporter. Much better shielding than the cat5e. To make a long story short - I didnt really notice a difference when I switched out from the cat5e. When it broke the cat7 I put the el-cheapo cat5e back in. Again - no difference. I'm not saying that shielding etc. makes no difference! What is encouraging, is the ethernet or wifi path to transmitting data to the DAC. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Shielded Mains Cables
Here in my Jungle abode, one would think that they were relatively free from the EMI/RFI issues experienced elsewhere. Not so. I just installed a power conditioner in my travel system and was a bit surprised that the sound DID change. Phil described it as More relaxed in his system. The change to me in my system sounded as if a tone control had been turned down a notch in the treble. Not as bright as before. Perhaps a bit more soothing on the ear. As is some sort of hash that you never noticed before had been suddenly removed. After a few days of listening, I dropped the level of my sub very slightly to get the tonal balance back to where I like it. Interesting. Looking around, I see no fewer than six (6) SMPS, 2 cell phones, a PC, and a wireless router in the same room. That's where this low-level grit, glare and hash comes from I'll wager. Measures taken to minimize the effects of this noise into the audio components via ferrites, and foil/braid shielding has merits. I suspect that when people hear HUGE cough, choke differences in power cables...they aren't hearing special wire, or cryo, or any of the other nonsense...they're hearing the shielding.
