[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Please help: MF Trivista DAC just died - Repair or Replace?
Hello all and happy prosperous new year wishes to everyone! My first post here so please be gentle...although I do lurk a lot! My new year hasn't got off to a brilliant start. My beloved Musical Fidelity Trivista DAC died this morning after 9 yrs of rock solid service with the left channel no longer outputting a signal. It sounded superb last night after I had been messing with my SB Touch and Soundcheck's TT3.0 tools. As I see it I have three options: 1. Get the Trivista DAC repaired by MF 2. Use MF's Fine-tuning service to get the DAC repaired as well as overhauled and some improvements made (cost 600GBP). 3. Replace the DAC altogether with something new and better(?) I would be really grateful for advice from you all on these options - especially option 2 (if anyone has experience of it). I have been very happy with the Trivista DAC and the only other DAC I seriously considered in the past 9 years has been the Naim DAC. But after a home trial I decided that the Naim DAC wasn't better - just different and that the Trivista gave a more expansive lush sound. In terms of a budget for a new DAC - I'm flexible and able to stretch to around 3,000GBP but for this sort of money I'd hope to get a sound that was substantially better than what the MF Trivista DAC offered - is that possible? I am also willing to buy second-hand (in fact, that is my preferred acquisition route). What DAC's do people suggest I try? Many thanks in advance and now back to listening to the analogue outputs of the SBT - oh the suffering...! First of all; all the Best for the New Year 2012. Exactly NoRoDa - I also already forecast that; Everyone of us has another plant chain, other source, amplifier and loudspeakers in its acoustic area (very important subject) and reacts differently also depending upon kind of the music on the priorities mentioned. After some reports of others in this forum, my current concern is the im-balance in the left channel of the trebele range with light tendency to an exaggeration with this TT3 suggested low adjusted buffer between 3400 - 4000. Possibly nevertheless the default of 2 could help to obtain a good equal course of the channels-- will thereby in the next meet to play and report. I have finally done that by going back to the default buffer size. I am now saying that changing SBT priorities does not work from a musical perspective. it might sound better, but is it music ? Also it seems to me that the designers designed the sound to be optimal at the default priorities and buffer size, Soundcheck has done well to remove things that affect the sound eg WLAN, IR etc, but I don't think the overall musical sound has been improved by tweaking the priorities and buffers. -- SBGK SBGK's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=52003 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

In principle, and especially if you are ready to spend up to £3000, I would recommend going the new DAC route over refurbishing a 9-year old unit. Which one is, of course, a function of your musical tastes as well as your other equipment. Good hunting! (Not an entirely bad way to start the new year). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Please help: MF Trivista DAC just died - Repair or Replace?
Hello, I also have a Trivista DAC which I have been happily using for the last 6 years. I have recently tried a few more modern DACS, including Naim, and have not found one that is the equal of my Trivista. Although several years old, the DAC used in the Trivista is a 24 bit 96/192KHz which is able to handle any modern Hi-res file. My recommendation would be to have your Trivista repaired. But if you have a friendly dealer near to you, why not try out some alternative DAC's for yourself. Good luck! p.s. SBGK: I think that with your latest settings you're on to something. I tried the SBT priorities + TT3.0 + Buffer 2 and my first impression is that the music is presented more naturally; the flow is more effortless; there is greater detail, but without losing the music's gestalt and drive. I have a rather mediocre live recording of the Guarneri's excellent performances of Mozart's viola quintets, which is a test case both for tonal balance (the viola needs to be distinguished easily within the mix) and for soundstage (placement of mikes for public performance clearly having a deleterious effect). These latest settings seem to have achieved the most believable presentation of these pieces I've heard so far in my system. So buffer size really seems to make a difference . . . Will listen more and report further, but in the meantime thanks again for your dogged pursuit of perfection! The only thing I can think of is this is the setting that SBT was designed for, I have tried 16384 after reading a previous post by Soundcheck and the sound is not good. 2 just works with the default settings and TT3.0 - very nice, for me anyway. -- SBGK SBGK's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=52003 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Guido F. sounds encouraging, must suit your system I am no longer looking at getting anything better out of the SBT, have moved on to optimising the output level from the dac to minimise the effect of any noise. dac manual says sound and noise are the 2 ouputs from the dac, noise is fixed so to minimise the effect the idea is to drive a higher line output ie use attenuation, i think I can do this in the preamp as the input levels can be adjusted. new to me, probably old hat to you guys. -- SBGK SBGK's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=52003 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0
The buffer has been at 3400 since TT 2.0, because it sounds better there. You know it does, but you tune your system to your taste and listening level by increasing it, only to once again move away from true 'improved sound'. Why not try moving your speakers out away from the wall a few more inches if you need to reduce the bass? RG where does it say to follow my settings ? if 3400 works for you then good. if you are going to comment then it should be from a point of knowledge, which would mean at least giving them a listen to, you would then have to explain why you didn't like the balanced, detailed, engrossing sound. I don't have to tune my system for any other source, so the probability is the issue lay with SBT and TT3.0 and so it proved. -- SBGK SBGK's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=52003 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

No need to be upset with someone who is being so generous to share his findings with us. Chill out, man. I've spent some time today doing comparative listening. I was comparing 3 profiles offered by SBGK: 1. The profile from Dec 27 2011 2. The profile from yesterday (Dec 31 2011) 3. Today's profile (Jan 1, 2012) Here are my findings: I was in love for a few days with profile #1 (ever since Dec 27, that is). After trying profile #2 (yesterday's profile) I found it exciting at first, but after prolonged listening started experiencing surprising levels of listening fatigue. Switched back to profile #1, and everything got restored back to its previous magic. Then I switched to profile #3 (today's profile). The sound got exciting again, but without the adverse effects of fatiguing. I liked it a lot, but wanted to compare it with profile #1 (because by this time I've completely ruled out yesterday's profile). Much to my surprise, realized that profile #1 sounds very, very muffled compared to profile #3! I'm staying with profile #3 for now. I haven't experienced fatiguing with it, although it appears much brighter than profile #1. Profile #2 brought considerable and almost unpleasant hardening of the sound, especially in the higher frequencies. Music played though that setting felt like watching a beautiful women under a super bright reflector light -- the contours were very sharp and harshly delineated, to the point of burning one's retina. Not a good long term experience. I'm hoping that today's profile (#3) will be a keeper. It sounds very present, very detailed, my only fear is that it may prove fatiguing in the long run. Anyone has any comments on the validity of this profile when it comes to longer listening sessions? I'm leaning more toward the overall musicality of the sound, even if it's at the expense of precise clinical details. Profile #1 did bring some magic in the area of musicality, and I thought that it was a definite keeper, but now I cannot realistically stay with it, seeing how muffled and fuzzy it sounds when compared to profile #3. Today's profile (#3) does indeed present so many fine details carved in the space very nicely (not as etched as profile #2). Overall, it is very surprising to me the hear such exaggerated differences in the sound quality resulting from such apparent minor tweaking of some low level software parameters. This may be dependent upon the overall level of resolution of one's audio system. I would say that if your system's total cost is around $10,000 and upwards, and if you can't hear any differences between these 3 profiles I've mentioned above, you should definitely sell that system and get some 'turn key' home entertainment audio kit at Best Buy. -- magiccarpetride magiccarpetride's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37863 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
