You can buy the bits to make a proper one from RS Components but I do

 sticky.

Yep, I made mine from a RS components PSU (purchased on ebay). It was
actaully a rebadged PSU from power-one. I think it cost me £8.00 +
pp. The new cost is v.high. I put it all in a nice box from Maplin,
but I don't use it. I honstly couldn't tell the difference with or
without.

Note, I have an external DAC, my findings might have been different if
I'd been using the analog outputs.

$1999 doesn't sound too bad, if it sounds good. Anyone know what the
new Naim Net system retails for?. I'll bet it's more than this.

Question: What do you think about the new SD NAS device?

- Awesome! Where can I get one?
- Nice. I'll put that on my wish list.
- Not for me, but it sure is pretty.
- Lame idea. Have the SD folks lost their minds?

Exactly. One gets what he pays for.

Not always, unless you like paying for waste heat. A quick calculation
shows that an Infrant NV would cost £105 per year less to run in
electricty costs than an average PC based server. Based on 50w vs. 200w
24/7/365 at 8p per KWHr. I didn't believe this figure when I first
calculated it!. Electricty is bound to be cheaper in the US, but it's
still going to be a significant cost.

Which comes to about 9 Mb (megabytes) per second, which is - terribly
 slow for Gigabit device.

It's also about what I get for an external USB2 or Firewire disk, so
I'm not complaining. Read performance is fine.

But wouldn't you expect to get substantially better performance from
RAID system comparing to a single disk?

Anyways, I think ReadyNAS definitely worth its money, outperforms all
its competitors I'm aware of, and overall a good thing to have. I'm
just saying that it seems not to perform as good as RAID+Gigabit would
 allow.

I've got the RAID journeld at present (as recommended if it's not on a
UPS). That'll have a bearing on write speed.

I didn't try myself, but I was concerned with so many claims on the net
 about bad performance.

BTW, try few GB file some time - transfer rate is not linear at all for
 large files.

Reading 4 files totaling 4.94GB on the server and saving them locally
took 3 mins 26 seconds. Which I make 187 mbit/sec. Clearly gigabit
networking helps here.

Copying the same files back to the server took 9 mins 2 seconds or 75
Mbit/sec (my server is 98% full until another disk arrives, this may
have affected the speed).

I guess that would be my first question - can it serve Apple Lossless
files, or does that require a PC to be the server? I'm assuming there's
no Quicktime codec on the NAS, so if like me you already have your
library in Apple Lossless so you can use both iTunes and SlimServer to
play music, then you can only use the NAS as disk storage, not a
 server.

The latest version of the infant slimserver plugin (6.2.2) serves Apple
lossless (that's how I'm using it). There's one bug with this version:
accented characters in artist and track names display incorrectly on
the squeezebox. We are promised a fix in the next version. FWIW, I
have iTunes pointing at the music folder on the NAS box, rather than
locally.

I don't use iTunes with slimserver, but according to the wiki slimserver
and iTunes do _not_ need to be running on the same machine. Slimserver
just needs to be able to read the iTunes library xml file. The wiki
entry is clearly still a work in progress, but it does seem clear on
 this point.
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToiTunes

Coming at it from a slightly different angle: I couldn't see anywhere
in the Infrant web docs what operating system the NAS is running, but
I'd certainly expect it's some flavor of Linux. As iTunes is
Mac/Windows only, it would have to run on a different machine, and the
 wiki indicates that's do-able.

The way I use it, is to have iTunes pointing at the shared music folder
on the NAS. iTunes (running on my Mac) then reads/writes all the music
files over the network. The slimserver plugin on the NAS serves the
files on the NAS to the SB (and yes it will do Apple Lossless). My Mac
doesn't need to be on to use the SB

So, what does everyone think about this?

Well, as it happens I purchased one of the Infrant servers recently
with the idea of using it to run slimserver, so I could turn my
computer off. It's a neat bit of kit, the only downside is that the
fans too noisy to keep the server in the living room.

It's a recommended combination.

It's a great DAC for the price. I recommend it!

I have had my lite dac60 for a few weeks now (shipped direct from HK to
the UK) and I must say I'm impressed with the build and the sound. With
no UK dealership service may be a problem, but then it is half the
price of other comprable offerings.

It's a little hard to do direct A/B comparisons with a naked SB3 as I
found SB's analog volume to be quite low, making it hard to do A/B's
with a CD too. As best I could I compared the Dac60 to the SB and must
say there was much more atmoshpere with the dac60, and I did (sorry
cliche warning) find myself tapping feet and fingers.

Do you leave yours on all the time?, if so what's the expected lifetime
of the tubes?.

Regards, Derek
