[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best option for an outdoor music system
A good friend recently built a covered outdoor patio at his farm. It is a lean-to attached to the side of his barn. It's probably 80 feet long and 25 feet wide. I'm trying to help him with a music system to play tunes through his iPod. I think four speakers mounted high along the long wall (it's about 20 feet high) would be sufficient. We can use powered speakers, if good ones exist, or shelter an amp somewhere. I guess we can control volume and song selection on the device itself. Budget is $500 to $1,000. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audioengine 5 thread
I've got a pair in my small office playing flac files directly through an external, 24-bit sound card. Since I'm playing at mostly low volume in an office setting, I use an equalizer to boost bass and treble response. However, I took them to the beach recently because my beach stereo ($1,000 list Denon CD/DVD system) was in the shop. I used an SB2 to play flac files in a much larger room (700 sq. ft.) at a much higher volume than my office. They handled the task better than the Denon system with higher maximum volume. Although bass response was impressive, I did hook up the Denon sub for a little extra kick. I'm certainly no audiophile when it comes to spending thousands on equipment, but I do appreciate clean, detailed audio with nice and punchy, but not overblown, bass. I'd recommend the Audioengines for any sub-audiophile application. -- Kyle Kyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2541 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33632 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'll second the Audioengine5 recommendation. I bought a set for my office, and they sound fantastic. Even without a sub they put out an impressive amount of bass. The online shoe seller Zappos has the best policy I have found. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Olive Musica
I looked seriously at the Musica, but with my setup it would have had to sit inside a cabinet, whereas the SB3 is small enough to sit out and still comply with my WAF. One of the great features of the SB3 is the screen, which you can read from across the room, whereas the Musica has a very small display. I can't remember if you can have Musica display over your TV screen, but I didn't want that, either. Other factors for me were open source software and plugins which are regularly adding functionality to the SB3 (I'm really hoping for a true IR pass-through soon), the ease and low cost of adding storage to my system and being able to back up my data to a separate hard drive (after you spend weeks ripping your collection, you don't want to lose it). Then there is the access to internet audio and data streams, etc. Cost was a bonus, but not a showstopper. And I've now got an SB3 at home, an SB2 at the beach and music backed up on two separate 250 gb hard drives for less than the cost of a Musica. -- Kyle Kyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2541 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21135 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

There's really no way to know, other than listening. But I doubt you're going to find much difference without an equipment upgrade. You might also try the digital coax output while you're experimenting. Some here have commented it sounds better than optical on their systems. Unfortunately, there's no one answer because there are so many variables, including (and perhaps most important) your own ears and your own listening environment. -- Kyle Kyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2541 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20463 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Actually, my Sunfire Jr. sub seems to blend quite nicely with the m22's, which I think I will keep since the Paradigms aren't sold online (I did find one dealer, but no trial period offered), and I don't have a local dealer. I haven't had time to really mess with the settings on the sub because it's been behind the Christmas tree. When I get that down, I'll tweak the settings. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Bookshelf speakers: Axiom m22i vs. Paradigm Monitor 5
Anyone had experience with these two speaker models? I'm auditioning the m221's now, but I'm a little disappointed in the lower-range punch. The Paradigms are three-ways with a bigger pair of woofers. I don't want to give up the excellent high-end quality of the Axioms, but I'd be willing to consider the Paradigms if I can keep the high end and add some punch in the lower octaves. I definitely don't want boomy. I want tight, punchy bass (tom-toms that you can feel in your chest). I have a Carver Sunfire subwoofer. -- Kyle Kyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2541 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19437 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Room is about 15x15; sub is in front right corner when facing front speakers. I have two ceiling-mounted rear speakers. I really like the sound of the Axioms (highs seem clearer but mellower -- more fluid? -- than my Boston Acoustics CR8s: less aural fatigue) but thought about trying the Paradigms. I can't go with anyting larger (WAF), and I don't really listen loud that often. -- Kyle Kyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2541 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19437 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The deciding factor for me (besides cost, which was a bonus, but I was willing to spend to get what I wanted) was being able to have the SB3 sitting out while the rest of my components are behind closed doors. I did not want to have to turn on the TV or open cabinet doors to navigate my collection (not to mention my wife would never figure it out), and I didn't want something that large sitting out (WAF again). The more I learned about SB3, the better I liked it, particularly the ability to easily add storage, open source, and the community here to help idiots like me. -- Kyle Kyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2541 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19016 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The midrange drivers are smaller than I expected. They sound much better coupled with my Boston Acoustics CR8's than when I disconnect the CR-8's and listen to the m22i's alone. A significant amount of lower midrange drops out. At low volume, this is no problem, but they don't have the punch I am looking for when you crank them up. Those are just my initial impressions. I do like the high end -- seems more airy and less bright than my current speakers. If the woofers do loosen up and provide a litle more punch, I'll be pleased. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Bookshelf speaker recommendations?
I'm thinking about replacing my main speakers (Boston Acoustics CR-8s). I've got a Marantz SR7200 receiver (110 wpc) and a Carver Sunfire Jr. subwoofer. I'm looking for clean, scintillating highs and punchy mids and lows. This is for music only -- DVD is totally secondary. I listen to rock, blues and jazz primarily. My bookshelves will handle a maximum of 21 inches in height. Price range is approximately $300-$400 each.
