Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Affordable PSU Upgrades for Classic

2009-06-10 Thread Wayne1

Herbach Rademan sell a surplus power supply that outputs 5 volts at 2
amps for $10.00

You will have to change the output connector to one that will fit into
the SB.

The power supply will also accept different power cables, so you can
try different types to see if they make any changes in the sound.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will this Elpac Power Supply Work?

2007-05-30 Thread Wayne1

The ELPAC you have linked to is a switching power supply.

The ELPAC WM220 is a very popular LINEAR, REGULATED power supply that
has been used by many SB owners.

They can be found used and/or surplus on E-Bay quite often

The 5 pin DIN connector will have to be removed and a 2.5 mm DC
connector soldered in place.

It appears that his posts were removed, but there are enough quotes
from his posts so you should be able to get the general impression.

It was after this incident that he started bashing the mods and power
supply I do.

Before that, he stated he would be happy owning either:

(about halfway down the first page in this thread)

http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/index.php?topic=34774.0

I did make clear to Tom that the power supply I sent him was my
prototype that I use personally. As was the modded SB2 I sent him.
The production version of the Ultimate PS MKII is in a far nicer case,
though in all honesty, it is not as nice as the Transporter.

There are at least two professional reviews of the mods online.
Tomorrow I am sending a modded SB2 and Ultimate PS MKII to Great
Britain where it will be reviewed and compared to the SB+.

The Ultimate PS MKII does have a 30 day money back guarantee. No one
has yet to return one.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Suggestions for an up-to-date, available source for a linear PS

2006-10-26 Thread Wayne1

The ELPAC WM075-1950-760 is the correct model number for a 5 volt, 1.5
amp, linear, regulated, wall wart type of power supply with the correct
connector that will plug direct into a Squeeze Box.

Unfortunately ELPAC has discontinued production of this model in favor
of a switching design. There may be a few around in the surplus houses
or used on E-Bay.

The ELPAC WM075-1950-D5 is the same linear power supply, but it comes
with a 5 pin DIN connector on the end. It will need to be reterminated
to be used with a Squeeze Box.

Digi-Key and Allied Electronics both still have stock of this item.

2006-10-11 Thread Wayne1

Thank you for the kind comments on the modded ELPAC.

Supply IS getting scarce.

Allied Electronics lists 10 in stock.

Digi-Key lists 27 in stock.

I believe ELPAC has discontinued this model in favor of a switching
power supply.

The D5 model has a 5 pin DIN connector on the end. This connector need
to be cut off and a 2.5mm DC power connector soldered on.

The D5 uses a four conductor cable from the PS to the connector.

The ELPAC 760 model used a two conductor zip cord cable from the PS to
the molded connector.

JohnnyLightOn,

I have not kept one of the modded D5 Elpacs around long enogh to do a
comparison. I try to mod them and ship them out within 48 hours of
receiving them.

My personal modded 760 Elpac has been up in Longmont on loan to Sean
from AV123.com. I will get it back from him next week for RMAF.

As far as a sound difference due to the cabling, I have heard a
difference between a coax cable and a shielded twisted pair used for a
SB power supply. There just might be a difference between 2 parrallel
conductors (760) and a star quad cable (D5) used for DC.

I do not believe the difference is anywhere near as great as the
capacitor and diode differences in the modded vs unmodded Elpac.

That is not quite true. As part of the mods that BOLDER does, the power

If you wish to hear about a couple of direct comparisons between RWA

I am not dissing the SB2. I have said before and I will say again the I
feel Sean Adams and company have produced an incredible product for the
price. It has changed the way I listen to music.

To MY ears and in MY system, I felt that it could be made to sound
better. Others may disagree. That's fine with me.

I put together a listening session and invited folks to come and hear
for themselves and make up their own minds.

If you are happy with the way your SB2 sounds then I am very happy for
you. I do agree that for most folks the stock SB2 will sound better
then what they are used to listening to.

For some folks whose passion is high quality audio reproduction, they
always want something better. The SB2 is also a way to achieve that.

I have not been able to compare the toslink and coax connection, yet.

I have compared the stock switching PS to the linear PS on coax digital
out. It was feeding a highly modded ART DI/O DAC direct into a modded
TEAC A-L700P. The difference was about the same as I heard on the
analog outs.

The highs were far more smooth with the linear supply. Midbass was
richer, fuller. Low bass extended.

All in all, I would suggest going with a linear power supply over the
stock power supply if you are looking to get even better sound out of
the SB2.

A couple of folks compared one of the BOLDER Cable modded SB2s to a
$4000.00 modded Denon 2900 over the weekend. The bottom line: The owner
of the Denon has ordered a SB2 and wants me to mod it for him. ;-)

In small quantities, a blank case can COST about $100.00. Then you need
the machining for the display. The holes drilled for the outs and ins
and then standoffs for the circuit board.

I would not suggest keeping the power supply inside the same case as
the D/A circuitry. The magnetic fields generated by the transformer
would do some rather nasty things. So that would mean two cases.

Then add in in high quality connectors, power supply parts, film and
foil coupling caps, etc. You would be looking at a SB2 selling for over
$1000.00.

Are you willing to pay that much?

Analog connections would make sense as to why a modded SB2 and better
Power Supply would sound so much better. But why do that? Why not
just connect it to a really decent DAC?

By running direct from the modded Squeezebox 2 direct to a pair of good
amps, you are getting rid of many mechanical connections, solder
connections, and LOTS of parts. All of which affect the signal passing
through them.

In the system we described, there was one Sonicap between the DAC chip
and the power amp. The power amps are DC coupled.

To our ears, this was the best sound. I do tend to feel that keeping
the signal path as simple and pure as possible will result in the best
sound. Up until I heard the modded Squeezebox 2 in the system last
night, I believed that a tube preamp was needed to get the sound I
like. No more.
