Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A/B SB3 vs Transporter

Good point. Downloaded some white noise and used my Radio Shack level
meter to ensure equal volumes. It turns out that, for whatever reason,
fixing volume at 100% on both the SB3 and Transporter is not enough to
equalize volumes if one unit is connected using unbalanced RCA and the
other using balanced XLR. In any case, volumes are now absolutely
 equal...

Not much difference between the Transporter and SB3. Out of
curiousity, what are the differences others have noted between these
 two in a true A/B comparison?While I don't have a Trasporter, your findings
 do not surprise me.
Level matching using instruments (not simply ones ear) is critical.
I've been fooled multiple times when comparing equipment simply because
one was a bit louder.

Ideally, to further eliminate bias, the test is performed blind.

they made the decision they did. Further it seeks to get the answer
from the only source who truly knows the answer.

I realize seeking direct answers from the source breaks most rules of
Internet forums however ;)

If a PSU can improve the sound has anyone asked Logitech why and why
they don't sell the product with a better PSU?

That would be for the same reason they don't sell the product with a
better DAC, or a better analogue output stage, or a better case, or ...
or ... or...Sorry, that's not an answer. My question is specific about a
 PSU, did
you ask them or do you have a link to someone else who did?

You may not be surprised, but I'm skeptical changing the PSU in the
Duet would make a difference that can be heard. But that's just my
opinion and I honestly would like to know if anyone who believes
differently has pursued it with Logitech.

I was hard-pressed to hear much of a difference. Perhaps there was an
increased sense of authority to the sound of the CD played by the Ayre
used as a transport, a better sense of extended low frequencies...That's
exactly what I was thinking last night when I, for the first
time, was able to A-B my SQ Receiver playing a lossless WMA and the CD
it came from. Then I got out my meter and found the CD was playing
about 2-3 DB louder. I compensated and voila, I couldn't perceive a
difference.

I'll assume the best from this comment. It's possible to reach the
correct conclusion via a nonscientific method, and nobody disputes
that. For example, I'll say that you're 6 feet tall. Absolutely
unscientific, but I might just be right. Science is a yardstick. I
can't convince anyone else that I'm right without it. Science isn't
about always being right, it's about being independently verifiable so
that you can know when you're wrong.

Scientists use the scientific method so that others can show exactly
how they are wrong. In this day and age, when someone does not use the
scientific method, it is often precisely because they do not wish to be
shown how wrong they are. Thanks for those comments, I was composing my own
 response but decided
against it. I'm glad I did as you conveyed my thoughts better then I
would have, and without my snarky overtone. :)

If you get failures, they will be extremely obvious. If it's not
obviously failing, it's not failing -at all-.Wait a minute, are you saying
when I tested viewing digital pictures via
different switches I was imagining things when one of them had more
vibrant colors, sharper lines and deeper hues?

Are you saying when I performed the same test using a joke I wrote in
MS Word it wasn't funnier with the better switch?

Damn.
