Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to keep lossless and compressed libraries
Here's what I do and why. First Why - I want to have only one copy of any track in my SB library. - I want the highest resolution copy in the SB library. - I want to keep all mp3's (even when a flac version exists) for my portable. What I do: /mp3/ /flac /flac/000-mp3/ So the Squeeze scanner process is pointed at /flac. Inside /flac is a directory called /flac/000-mp3, which contains all the of the mp3 files that do not have a flac equivalent. The Squeeze scanner will pick these up and add them to the library. Outside of the flac tree I have another folder called /mp3. When I get the flac version of a given track, I move the mp3 copy out of /flac/000-mp3 tree into the /mp3 tree which saves it so I can copy to my portable if I want. And the mp3 version gets removed from the SB library on the next nightly "full scan". -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81007 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I have the Behringer and the ECM mic. Although the DEQ may have a "negative impact on the signal" the net result including all losses and gains is a clear positive in my room. I can take the DEQ in and out of my signal path, and it simply sounds better with it in. I use the DEQ only to cut signal on those frequencies that my room tends to overamplify. Those who are blessed with a good room to start with and who have received spouse approval to install corner traps and so forth in their listening room may find that they get no net benefit from room-correcting EQ. So I am not saying that the DEQ is right or beneficial for everyone. For me it is. I don't have any experience with Inguz plugin so i can't compare the two EQ solution paths. Nonetheless I think the plugin is great and salute the developer(s). -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40023 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

opaqueice Wrote: > > Given that this effect is so powerful with only two (properly arranged) > speakers, it makes you wonder what could be done with more.. A coherent image depends upon the sound waves meeting your ears at the precise time for your brain to infer a distinct location of origin. The more sources of sound, the harder it is to get that precision. That's one reason some folks claim that speakers with fewer drivers (i.e. single-driver or two-way) can image better than three or four-way speakers. Seeking to achieve this precision is also the reason that some speaker manufacturers tilt their baffles so that the tweeter is set back from the woofer frame. This puts the point of origin of the two speakers closer together, ensuring that sound from the woofer is not delayed in relation to sound from the tweeter when it reaches your ears. Pat McGinty calls this "time coherence". http://www.meadowlarkaudio.com/TC1.htm Anyway, my point is that throwing more speakers into the mix will make it tougher to get that amazing 3-d image we get from a good stereo set. Most decent multi-channel processors let you enter the distance from listening position to each of the speakers you're running in an attempt to give you some control over synchronizing the sound at that position. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22717 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I think for 2k you can certainly improve your sound. A couple ideas in the meantime: - move your speakers off the back wall for listening (get the right one out in front of the wardrobe so you're not getting a big reflection off the side of it). You can always put them back when done. - a thick rug on the floor between you and the speakers - a padded/quilted piano cover - sit closer to the speakers when listening - a digital eq to find that boomy bass frequency and cut it -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22717 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Yes Raja, I think the Constantine is unneeded with the XR55. The signal has to get re-converted back to digital again to go into the amplification stage, so the high-quality analog output of the Constantine is in a sense going to waste. Going straight from the SB's digital ouput into the XR55 should sound excellent. I wouldn't regret buying the Constantine though, maybe it's time to start a great headphone rig? (I have the Renaissance and the Dialogue II and I really like both DAC's.) There's no need for a DAC with the Panny. That's what's unique about the Panny line of digital amps, i.e. that they keep the input signal in the digital domain until the final gain stages, and as a result are known for sounding excellent with digital input. Using a fancy DAC with the Panny would be a waste of money, imo. I do believe that the Pannys are relatively unique in their design though. Julian links to a TI Equibit-based amp above. This is the same tech that Panasonic uses in the their digital line. Most seperate power amps take analog input, and thus an "external" DAC is required. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22502 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Couple paths you can go down: - "External dac" path $200 - dac with switched coax and toslink inputs (I have Digital Dialogue II) $80 - Scott Endler stepped attenuators That leaves $170 left over for a power amp. Maybe an Odyssey Khartago off the used market? I agree with the above, and I also think that a large aspect of audiophilia has to do with status. Thus any enhanced product that SlimDevices produces and labels "audiophile" is not going to be fancy enough or expensive enough for some people. A lot of audiophiles are just driven to spend more dosh than the next guy. You see the same thing across many "gadget" hobbies - the guy with the lightest expensive carbon bike, the guy with the hand-built custom tube guitar amp and the '63 strat, the guy with the most expensive sports car or motorcycle, the guy who buys the newest-latest golf driver every three months, etc. Those folks aren't really in their hobby to enjoy the activity, but rather to have the coolest gear. There are tons of status-driven gear-heads out there, and they're not going to be satisfied with something other people can also easily have. At some point, "audiophile" becomes more about financial status than sound quality. -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22301 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 uncontrolled full scale output bug - still a concern?
Barry, I believe you have it right, and I'm sure others will jump in and correct any misconceptions. I'm not an ee, but here is what I have come to understand via following Sean's (and other's) posts.: There are independent volume controls for the digital and the analog output connections. 1. The analog outputs have a 2-stage volume control. One stage is the "preamp volume" attenuation you set in the player settings, and this setting is meant to limit your max output voltage so that you can run direct into a power amp w/o a preamp. This setting is not adjustable from the remote control, and is generally set according to your amp's input voltage requirements and your desired maximum listening level. The units of measurement for this control are in DB of attenuation, but can be converted to actual voltage with some formula that's floating around but I don't have handy atm. (sorry) The other volume control is the standard volume control used from the remote control which operates from zero up to the maximum you have set in the preamp volume. 2. The "digital" volume control affects the output level from the digital outputs. It can be set to "fixed" (at full output) which decouples it from the remote's volume control. By default it not fixed and will vary along with the analog standard volume from zero to 40. 3. If I set the digital volume control to "fixed" I can vary the analog output volume without affecting the digital output level. 4. Preamp volume attenuation does not affect the digital output level. 5. When digital volume is set at 40, or is set to "fixed" - then no resampling takes place. The SB3 digital outputs the source pcm signal unchanged. If you limit the digital volume then the SB3 will resample in order to lower the digital output level. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21772 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: volume control question - digital or analogue?
btw, I'm in the same boat, because I want to use a digital eq for room correction. This is preventing me from using the SB's analog outputs. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: volume control question - digital or analogue?
opaqueice Wrote: > I have a question about the effect on audio quality of the squeezebox 3 > digital volume control. > ... > > Any suggestions? If you forgo the DAC, you can run the analog outs from the SB direct into the amp. That is a great way to go as well as being the cheapest way. You make use of the preamp volume level feature of the SB3, which you can fine tune to your desired listening max volume. If you must use a DAC, then you give up that preamp volume control. The digital volume control doesn't work the same way, and it is not as nice because of the noise floor of the DAC. Because you have to turn down the SB3's digital volume very low to bring the sound to reasonable listening levels, any noise in the DAC whatsoever becomes very loud in comparison. In effect you are at the mercy of the noise floor (blackness) of the DAC, and with my DAC direct into my (500wpc) amp the hiss was audible. If you have a DAC with an output attenuator you might be able to avoid this problem by lowering the DAC's output and raising the SB3's digital volume. Or as suggested above install some external attenuators after the DAC so that you don't have to run the digital volume control so low. Alternately, if you have the world's quietest DAC you might not have an issue. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21617 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: AB Testing Support
Steve, I recommend you rip to flac with EAC and flac.exe. You can always go back to wav format, but once you're in wav you can't go forward to flac as you've lost the tags. I think it's best to keep the metadata with the audio file, as opposed to relying on any separate database. Many of us have friends who have trashed or otherwise screwed up their itunes databases. I can't imagine the pain of having 2000 cd's worth of wav files orphaned if something were to happen to the lone databse with all the tag info. If you have 2k CD's then you only want to have to do this once. Take the extra time and go all the way to flac. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21545 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Linear Power Supply DIY Weekend Project
Skunk, Nice job on the case. Jetlag and I have the same PS from power one you have. I have a case as well but haven't yet assembled the rig. I'm thinking of bolting the side of the PS to the side of the case.(instead of resting it on the bottom via the 4 "feet") The side holes on the PS are actually threaded, and I have screws that match. My thougt is that a tight coupling there will transfer heat to the case and use it as a heat sink. I'm wondering if I need to use some of that CPU paste I have to make the heat transfer better. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21505 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Pre-amp Needed?
joncourage Wrote: > If the only music source I intend to use is SB3 -> DAC, is there any > need for a pre-amp given that I can control the volume in the SB3 > software? Just to be clear, there's two options here: 1 - skip the DAC and use the SB's analog outputs direct to an amp. The SB has been shown to have enough output to drive power amps, and even provides the "preamp volume control" attenuation feature to make tuning the output level easy. 2 - use an external DAC as you mention above. Then the whole scenario depends on the output of the DAC, not the SB. You'd need to find out if your chosen DAC's analog output can drive the amp directly. In this case you'd use the "digital volume" control to set the volume level. The digital volume control does not have the preamp attentuation feature. I've been using DAC's into integrated amps up until my JVC 202 blew up last week. With that piece sent back for repairs I am now running my SB's analog inputs direct into the stereo amp inputs of my Ampeg SVT-4PRO which is something like 500 wpc into 4ohms. It is working fine and the sound is nice, but I have to admit it is a bit stressful knowing that if anything goes wrong (i.e. white noise) that my speakers will likely be toasted. I have not tried running my dac into the Ampeg yet, but I suppose that would be the logical comparison. I guess I am just scared. :) -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21165 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Volume bug - can you really hear it?
Jon, No worries man! Looks like you were partially right, based on what Patrick said. The fix being a combo of f/w and and the newer server code. I'm running fw 28 and the nightly 6.2.2. from 11/13/2005. Does anyone know if the server-side fix went in before that, or should I refresh again? (server's been quite stable so I'd not want to update unless I have to) Thanks, Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18439 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Reality Check: Power Supplies
Hi Jon, You're describing a "blackness" test. A very valid test, but one of many that may be used to decide which PS is better than another. I'm not an EE either, but the gist of the linear PS preference is that the switching supply introduces distortion while playing. So the switching PS could actually be "blacker" but one might still prefer the linear supply for listening to music, because the noise introduced is insignificant at listening levels, while the distortion introduced may be more significant. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20725 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
