Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] There is life after the Soundcheck TT mods..
I've been away from this forum for quite a while and it's depressing to see such mud-slinging as this thread serves up. Who really cares if someone else does, or does not hear a difference (improvement or not) in some kit/tweak etc. It's not a competition. If you like someone great. If I don't, well that's great too. Folk should just get on with their lives and stop pissing in the wind on threads like this one. I guess I'll stay away for another year. I was asked recently by a work colleague who knew I was into streaming music what the best audiophile router was. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] LP-Digital Conversion?
I certainly can't compete with cliveb's excellent help page, but here's how I work (with a Mac). The output from my Michell Gyro SE/Tecnoarm/G1042/Graham Slee Era V Gold phono stage goes into a Sugden Headmaster (for headphone listening) and then out to the amp. The pre-out from the Headmaster connects to an M-Audio Transit USB device that I connect to a MacBook running Audacity. I've taken to recording at 48Khz/24bit (so am only partially loony!). Once an LP has been captured - usually as one large wave file, I transfer this to a Mac Mini desktop running Apple's Soundtrack Pro. Being somewhat masochistic I do all the click removal manually by redrawing the samples - identifying visually the worst offenders. I'm not obsessive about surface noise - though in the past I have used DCart on a PC, with moderate success at times. Once the waveform is cleaned up, it's a simple - though time consuming process to cut and paste tracks to a new wave file, top and tail them (adding a fade in/out so surface noise ramps in and out) and save them before converting to Flac, tagging, and adding to Squeezecenter. I know there are tools that can automate some (or maybe all) of this, but I don't feel the need to use these . . Two things strike me as being really important: use the best quality source components you can afford, and when making the initial recording set the levels so the signal peaks just under 0db. If it's consistently over you'll get a loudness wars type result, and if too far under there'll be a need to normalise the waveform upwards; only do this on waves containing the complete LP or else you'll destroy the levels between tracks. I try not to normalise at all. As a very rough guide, the processing takes about twice as long as actually recording it - if there's only moderate click removal needed. Each LP-rip is a labour of love, and visitors hearing Flac playback of the files often don't believe they're from old-fashioned vinyl . . . -- morris_minor Living Room: Transporter Study: Receiver Kitchen: Boom Son's Bedroom: Classic iPeng on an iPhone, 2 x Controllers Server: TranquilPC T2-WHS-A3i SC 7.2.1 - 23630 - - - - http://www.last.fm/user/morris_minor_1 morris_minor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13950 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65876 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 320kbps Mp3's on a hi-fi system....
I've been following this thread with a bemused interest. I use FLAC because you can recreate the original wav file should you need it, and I don't like the thought of throwing away data needlessly. I have some MP3s in my library - mostly downloads - but never give more than a nanosecond's thought to the fact that I may be listening to a less than perfect rendition of the original wav file (which is a less than perfect rendition of the studio master anyway). The fact that a lossless file can be proven to be lossless, and the fact that for many people in many circumstance high bitrate MP3s are indistinguishable from the original (whatever that may be) seems to be totally irrelevent to the enjoyment of music. I hope posters here exercise the same zeal in attacking the CD loudness war (sorry, going off topic here . . ). I don't seem to generally buy CDs that are driven by radio plays, but a recent impulse purchase of an album by Amadou Mariam (Dimanche A Bamako) has proved almost impossible to listen to properly - ie not just as background - which is a pity because the music is great. I put a track at random into a wav editor, and it clips constantly. I would make a prediction that in this case an MP3 would sound indistinguishable from a lossless FLAC. Horses for courses, eh? I think we should be thankful that SD is an English-speaking company, thus having forums (fora, sorry) in English. How many of us could post in Dutch, Danish, German etc ? After a while browsing around these fora you get to know the regular poster's points of view. If you don't share them, and challenging them produces a pub bore kind of response, do what you'd do in a pub - just walk away. Getting nasty just looks plain bad for those new to things Squeeze . . who come here for help and support. And then of course there's the moderation route . . . :0/ We should be able to have interesting debates without getting personal. Just my tuppence. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linear PSU in stock at Farnell (UK)
I'm on my second PSU from Farnell: http://cpc.farnell.com/PW00187/batteries-power-supplies/product.us0?sku=UNBRANDED-AD-05150R_requestid=142966 The first one was duff from the word go; SB kept shutting down. The replacement has lasted about 2 months: a few days ago the SB display started flickering badly, then the unit kept restarting after a minute or so of playing. So I've gone back to the wall wart - display now OK, and the unit plays for hours. To be totally honest, I can't actually discern any audible difference between the wall wart and the (working) linear. So I'm not bothering with a replacement from Farnell. But - I may have just been unlucky with the PSUs I got. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ripping Vinyl
Doesn't one of the differences in sound between LP and CD have to do with the filtering of high frequences by CD? Musical information - in the form of harmonics - extends way beyond the 20KHz barrier of a CD, and even if you can't identify the sound at high frequencies they must (surely?) influence the tonal characteristic of the fundamental note you can hear. Higher frequencies come off an LP, so in my mind it's worth trying to capture them. -- morris_minor morris_minor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13950 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21836 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I think trouble with hi-fi is that it's inanimate objects trying to achieve the impossible: the recreation of live music. If you accept this - then every piece of kit ultimately fails. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Digital downloads and Red Book CDs
I've just been exploring non-DRM downloads from Linn Records and Gimell Records (which are splendid BTW). However, I have a question concerning Red Book Cds. The spec gives a CD a frequency response of 20Hz to 22.05KHz. A CD quality download is presumably a file that's been nowhere near a CD and can be expected to have a wider frequency range. If I produce a CDR audio version of the CD quality downloads, (for car use, say), am I right in thinking I'll be losing the frequency extremes? Does the 20Hz-22.05Khz limit get applied to the data when burning/making the disc, or is it a function of the playback device? [This question would also apply to computer recordings of vinyl - my Era V phono stage spec quotes 5Hz - 2.7MHz (nice for bats and whales:o)] Or have I got this all totally wrong, and 44.1KHz/16bit recordings are limited to the Red Book frequency range by definition? Some enlightenment from those who know would be most welcome! [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Are you an audiophile or a music lover?
The other day a friend said to me Well, I'm not an audiophile like you . . ., referring to the mini system he played his music on. This got me thinking, because I don't think I'm an audiophile - more a music lover who likes good quality sound. I have (a very healthy) cynicism of the claims made by high-end equipment manufacturers, and read Hi-Fi+ for it's amusement value. Yet I do have a good turntable, a phono stage, DAC etc plus of course an SB3. My friend suggested this test: In a mythical Blade Runner-type future you have a stark choice - 1) Have a hi-fi system to die for, but only be allowed to play music on it you currently hate. or 2) Be restricted to a compressed and bandwith limited portable-type player, but able to play all your favourite music. I know which I'd go for, but what would you do . . .? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Which budget constrained DAC for SB3?
I've just got my SB3 and am having good results feeding into a Sonifex Redbox DAC1 (£435) Sonifex make broadcast equipment and one enterprising audio dealer got the company to make a more domestically acceptable version by lopping off the rack mount. Here's a link to Sonifex: http://www.audioatmosphere.com/AUDIO_SS/displayproduct.asp?UID=26032box/rbdac1_ld.shtml and to the page from the dealer's site (split from it's frameset): http://www.audioatmosphere.com/AUDIO_SS/displayproduct.asp?UID=26032 The dealer makes comparison with units costing to £3,500; I can't really vouch for this, but Stuart - the guy I dealt with - said the RB DAC1 gave the Benchmark DAC1 a good run for its money, and at half the price I gave it a go on an approvals basis. I kept it!! I read somewhere that if the SB3 had been made by an audio manufacturer they'd have tripled the price for it. I'm sure the reverse applies and the pro-audio broadcast market is pretty demanding and wouldn't like being ripped off by inflated prices. Anyway - this may help . . . My first post to the forum BTW.
