Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FLAC on a Mac with iTunes - CAN DO!
kphinney, Thanks a lot for the topic and explanation of getting everything to work. I too use flac, and would be interested to try this. I do have a question.. once iTunes picks up the flac files can you use iTunes to add album art to the flac files? My current flac library (also around 500 GB) does have all the album art, but most of it is Amazon quality (240 x 240) and it would be nice to add iTunes hi-rez album art. My other question, would Slim recognize this work around if I decided to let iTunes manage the music within Slim? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 vs Transporter via external DAC
Thanks for taking the time to post. It was well written and a good read. Personally, I have not yet had a chance to demo a good high end DAC in my home and compare it against my Transporter, so I have no basis to form an opinion. I know that one day I will demo a higher end DAC and I look forward to it. I do have a very neutral and revealing two channel rig (IMHO), so it will be interesting to compare. I do realize that the laws of diminishing returns will apply, and if it takes 2-3k more to hear a subtle improvement over a stand alone Transporter, I'll be keeping the Transporter. Hmmm, have you considered a tubed pre? I know you get a nice discout through your employer, but there are many nice tubed pre's available for a great price. If interested, I could rattle off a few for under $1500.00, and a couple under $1000.00. IMHO, running a tubed pre with SS amps is a wonderful thing! [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why am I overloading when connected XLR balanced to a pre amp?
I currently have my Transporter connected to my pre via XLR balanced, and some (not all) albums (flac) overload my system. I do keep the Transporter volume at 100%. I do have an option within my pre to adjust analog input levels, and need to decrease the volume for two channel to -11 db to kep some albums from distorting. Should this be happening? Why do only some albums overload? Is it ok that I keep this adjustment at -11 all the time, any effect on overall sound quality? Would it be best to adjust attenuation within the Transporter instead? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Using Transporter as a pre amp has me puzzled.
Unfortunately, my HT (5.1) and two channel listening are done within the same room and I currently run separates. With that said, I would like to add a 2 channel amp (Moscode 401HR) and connect my Transporter directly to the Moscode. No problem there, connect my mains, run analog from the Transporter to the Moscode. Now I'm stuck. Since the speakers are now connected to the Moscode, and the Moscodes only two ins are used by the Transporter, how can I listen to HT? Is my only option to disconnect the Transporter, and connect the pre-amp to the Moscode each and every time I listen to one or the other? Is there another option? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What's better?
When you get your Mac Mini, be sure to disable (under pref. in iTunes) the sound candy such as eq, soundcheck and enhancer. Under applications-utilities-find midi and see that 44.1kHz is checked. Also, be sure that iTunes and the main Mini volume are set at max, and use you pre-amp/receiver to adjust volume. I have a Mini in my listening room and used iTunes/ALAC for all two channel listening. The mini was connected via a glass toslink to my pre-amp. It sounds very good. After a year or so, I decided I wanted an external DAC, researched a lot, but decided on a Transporter because of the positive feedback concerning its DAC. I have converted all my ALAC files to FLAC, and only use Slimserver. The one feature I really miss from iTunes is the ease of navagating through the georgeos Album art view. With the recent iTunes update, it is now full screen. That said, overall, I prefer Slimserver to iTunes. As another poster mentioned, burn DRM files to a cd, then importing the files will solve your concern. I'm thinking about using either the MacMin or a Sonos ZP80 as the front end to the Transporter (just use it as a DAC not a player), however, I was advised by someone on the forum that his experience was that using Transporter as both a player and a DAC had yielded higher audio quality. Thanks. I agree with the using the Transporter as both a player and a DAC. The price of the Transporter had a lot to do with its DAC. I have done a lot of a/b testing using an Anthem MCA 50 amp, between the Mac Mini/Anthem AVM 50 combo and Transporter. While the Transporter DAC certainly sounds cleaner, has a wider and deeper soundstage, has slightly less high frequency and a more robust lower end, the AVM 50/MCA 50 is no slouch. All the above differences are subtle but noticable. Is it $2000.00 better than the AVM/Mini combo? Well, I suppose that depends on how important $2000.00 is to you. I think when you get to this caliber of equipment , it take a lot of money for subtle improvements. The Anthem and Transporter are both high end and well regarded pieces. I don't know what amp nor what speakers (full range) you are using, I assume they are of similar caliber? IMHO, a person really needs very good full range speakers to appreciate the added expense attempting to top the Anthem DAC, otherwise it may not be very dramatic. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DEQX and Transporter?
I run my Transporter balanced into my Anthem AVM 50 pre-amp. While listening to 2 channel direct, this does bypass the AVM 50 while feeding an Anthem MCA 50 amp. I have recently added room treatment and am considering adding a DEQX 2496, and am still attempting to educate myself before I purchase. I do have 3 way speakers (running full range). My concern/question is, I don't want to lose the use of the DAC in the Transporter, and don't understand if adding a DEQX will still alllow me to continue to use the Transporter's DAC? The DAC was the deciding factor when spending $2000.00 for the Transporter. I'm simply looking for room correction. Since I'm using a Transporter/computer, I know another option is to run room correction through this Transporter/computer. However, I use an Intel Mac Mini and I'm not aware of a viable option. I don't want to boot into windows to use the Slimdevice software since I often use the Mac when listening to two channel music. Any thoughts? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] I think I can use iTunes instead of slimserver on Transporter using Mac mini.

So I'm thinking, if I want to use iTunes and ALAC, I can bypass Slimserver's interface while the Transporter DAC works it mojo on the digital in. This should work, no? If it does, my biggest concern is, will I lose any sound quality using the glass toslink (jitter) instead of a wireless stream? The obvious down side to this...no more flac.
