Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps without tone controls
This means I'm a little reluctant to upgrade to a more expensive amp because I fear the lack of tone controls will somehow let me down. Then don't upgrade! You can still use eq in iTunes if you feel the need, or go the extra step and use the Inguz Digital Room Correction software. And then there are hardware options as already pointed out above. I would keep the tone controls out of the amp/preamp mix. stevo -- stevo stevo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6250 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36887 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps without tone controls
These days audiophiles prefer to buy expensive cables to modify the tone- the cable marketing companies (yes, marketing, not engineering) count this as their greatest success. People can be such dopes! If you like tone controls then use them. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps without tone controls
I know a lot of higher end amps have no tone controls but I find myself partial to them. I like to crank the treble and bass up on my Rotel RA02 integrated amp. This means I'm a little reluctant to upgrade to a more expensive amp because I fear the lack of tone controls will somehow let me down. On my previous setup I used both the EQ in iTunes and those on my Amp to get the sound I want. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps without tone controls
I'm quite keen to here people answers on this, was having a chat the other day with the owner of an audio shop. I have an old technics equaliser that i've been forced to stop using as due to rubbish ribbon power connecters that meant I had to have the radio unit turned on to use it. I prefer the sound of my stereo through an equaliser so much, it makes such a difference, yet they seem to have stopped making them. -- Gibbo Gibbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36887 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The theory is straight forward. Most audiophiles want a wire with gain. The less in the path, the less chance for something to screw it up. All reasonably priced analog tone controls or equalizers mangle the signal phase. And phase is critical to realism. Some mangle it terribly, beyond recognition. Serious professional studio equalizers cost about a thousand dollars per channel. It makes no sense to put such expensive parts in a preamp when 99% of the folks will never use it. Nearly all serious audiophile integrated, and obviously all preamp/amp combinations, make it trivial to patch in an EQ for those who want it. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps without tone controls
I'm in the purist camp as well -- leave the signal path as unadulterated as possible. That said, I recently purchased a Velodyne SMS-1 to equalize my subwoofer. It had some nasty peaks betwen 30-60Hz. I've got much cleaner bass now. But bear in mind, I'm only manipulating the 20-80Hz range. Above that, I don't want to muck about. -- Videodrome Two-channel System: SB3, into Musiland MD-10 DAC; Outlaw 970 Pre/Pro; McCormack DNA-125 amplifier; Quad 11L speakers; Sota Sapphire ttbl. w/ Grado Ref. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps without tone controls
If you have some music that can be so improved by a simple tone adjustment, wouldn't the best solution be to rip the CD, use an audio editor to make those tone adjustments, and then either burn them back to CD or load them into SlimServer? In other words, if you've identified a disc that has problems that can be corrected in such a manner, why not just modify the disc so that it no longer sounds wrong--and why not simply throw out the disc that sounds wrong when you're done? Then you don't need tone controls, and you also don't have to reset everything back to normal when you play a different disc. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36887 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
