My SB Touch has out of memory errors with these settings. The SB touch

No errors since I commented out this line : echo 2147483646

SBGK, whats wrong with a bit of vetting? If you want this stuff to be
respected it has to endure public scrutiny.

I wont be hateful, hell ill even try it and test it blind, in a very
scientific manner and have some others do it as well.

so cmon...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Low Jitter mods

2012-05-12 Thread SBGK

Here are my thoughts on how to improve the sound of the Touch beyond
TT3.0 and EDO.

They have mainly been well received by people who have tried them, think
the only issues have been where people have had to decode on the Touch
rather than the server.

They were derived mainly from hunches, trial and error and reading linux
optimisation blogs.

If there are any people that know more about Linux and Alsa then maybe
they can come up with better settings.

Beats me, I've always suspected that to be a bit misdirected. Assuming
jitter of this magnitude actually does affect sound quality, I wouldn't
be at all surprised to find USB DACs that fared worse in that respect
than many of the traditional DACs or for that matter the DACs built into
the Squeezeboxes. Somehow it is assumed that because it's asynchronous
it will by definition perform better.
However, my question this time wasn't directed at the alleged impact of
jitter, merely how the OP verified that the mods affected and more
importantly improved jitter.

Lacking measurements, I'll settle for anything that corroborates the
claims regarding jitter.

But gentlemen the effects of and sound of jitter has to exist and be a
very BIG problem otherwise why would the audiophile have its collective
panties in a knot over asynchronous USB? ;) :) ;) :)

Current state of the art audiophile approved computer music playback
system:

Apple MAC mini: $600 - $800

Apple approved external hard drive: $130

USB cable (MAC mini to external hard drive): $200

External DAC with asynchronous usb input: $600 - $6000

USB cable (MAC mini to external DAC): $200

Additional software to ensure a bit perfect digital audio data stream:
$700

Total cost: $2430 - $8030

Lower cost semi-audiophile approved alternative:

El-cheapo desktop computer: $300

External hard drive: $80

Generic USB cable (computer to external hard drive): $10

Squeezebox Touch: $300

External DAC without asynchronous usb input: $400 - $6000

Digital coax cable (Touch to DAC): $20

Music server software to ensure a bit perfect digital audio data stream:
included with Squeezebox Touch

Total cost:$1110 - $6710

Notes:

1) Both systems assume that there is a working ethernet/Wi-fi router
available.

2) Touch system only audiophile approved for background listening to low
bit rate internet audio streams.

Nothing quite like limiting trials to a self-selected group predisposed
to favor the results. Very efficient!

And, the feedback snippets quoted in your message (but not repeated
above) are great examples of the classic audiophile style of hypebolic
writing. But, it helps remind me that, as a human, I am far and away the
biggest variable in my system. I can experience similar changes in sound
quality just by getting up from my seat, walking around to do a few
things around the house or eating a meal, and them coming back to start
listening again.

One gets all the benefit of dramatic changes with none of the hassle!

Just back from a couple of weeks with my new Linn set up, for a
laugh...

SBGK, you asked back then, does Linn Klimax DS play Spotify. Nope. It
portrays it, perfectly, and for that matter all my other music sources
too, thanks for asking.

I really couldn't have friends / family around for supper and get them
too close to open electrical sources housed in tin-foil and tupperware
for fear of health and safety...

As far as references for your mods - well, one of them would have been
from an american mate who rides carpets when not shooting the breeze,
the other, who knows?

And frankly who cares?

Best investment you can make with the SB approach is a comfy pillow,
forget these mods and the idiots offering them and just enjoy the
music for what it is. (Or save your time chasing shadows and just invest
in a decent DAC / AMP / Speakers / Listening room).

Here is some feedback - no negative feedback so far

Hi

Just to let you know that I have been listening with your latest
settings and buffertime=9.

Absolutely superb sound. Still a tad on the dark side, but with lots of
detail, nuances, and complexity. Plenty of sparkle, too, when on the
record. Sound stage is expansive and three-dimensional. And the acid
test: the medley from Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, 18
minutes of dissonance which I was actually able to enjoy, for a change.
I could say it's the most analog sound so far from the SBT, except
analog was never this open and clear in my system.

Great job! Thank you very much for sharing these settings.

and

My quick take is that these latest settings are a bit of an improvement.
The clarity, smoothness, and detail are still there, but everything
seems to be notched up just a hair better. One of my favorite test
tracks is on the Stereophile Test CD #3---by Airto Moira and the Gods of
Jazz--titled Never Mind. Just piano, drum kit, and bass. But,
goodness, did that just sound amazing.

Well, so far so good.

The world seems to be divided into 2 types of people, those who have
tried the settings and like them and those who haven't tried them.

Think I will call them diode settings as once you hear them there is no
going back (see what I did there).
