actually, I think you can go from FLAC to FLAC (compression 5) in
either foobar2000 or dbpa and it will do the WAV conversion behind the
scenes. A bit easier in terms of steps

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Popping noises with Transporter firmware 81 and 85

2011-04-08 Thread jwverheij

I just upgraded to Squeezebox Server version 7.6, build 32248. After
restarting my server and Transporter, I still get firmware version 85.
The manual upgrade of the firmware (press-and-hold the brightness
button) also just re-installs version 85.

How do I get version 86 on my Transporter?

I can reconfirm that the popping noise problem is not solved with
firmware 85 in 7.6.0-32229 nightly build.

The song to test is from this album:

https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetailvalbum_code=HD090368032362

Just try the very first one Spanish Harlem. The popping noise occurs
at about the 55 secs point.

I found that turning off the VU meter (blank display on the right side)
will prevent the popping. So it is definitely the CPU running out of
juice trying to decode 24/96 FLAC file. Once it is decoded, I can seek
back and forth and no popping sound is heard.

2011-02-12 Thread spc337

I have pops with 7.5.1/80. I never noticed it until I move houses so I
figure it was related to my new home possible due to wireless signal
strength of 50%. I would have thought wireless would cause skips not
pops so I decided to look at firmware. I recent updated the server to
7.5.3 and installed firmware 85 from the nightly builds and still get
pops... I'm going to drop back to 82 incase I'm pushing the
compatibility of firmware/server too much...

For me the pops are on everything from FLAC to internet radio... I may
drop back to an even earlier version just to see what happens.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Yea - I've stripped everything down several times think it could be a
connection issue but no luck. Hence I started thinking about the

Lower compression rate the sbs server transcode your alac to flac but
at compression tate -0 to save some cpu .

Normally you use -5 when ripping some uses the hardest possibel
compression -8

As I understand, the latest changes involve scrolling. So to
stress-test, one might want to set scrolling to some obscurely high
(fast) values.

To test, you want to have scrolling enabled, play a song with long
enough text to cause scrolling, and run the vis. I wouldn't change the
scrolling values, if you push them too high you are going to run into
problems, the default is 30fps and looks pretty good.

Heard (more or less) a couple of movements from Mahler's 3rd (from

(Anyhow, thanks to Andy for looking into this so fast - and while one
can discuss testing procedures and the likes forever - this gives me a
impression that some at Logitech still care for the nutcase audiophile

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Popping noises with Transporter firmware 81 and 85

2011-01-04 Thread Celeritas

I've tried every file that was giving me trouble before and I cannot
reproduce the popping noises. I can't say I've ever received service
like this from any company, anywhere. To identify an issue and have it
addressed so quickly speaks volumes about the way this team was put
together. I realize that much has changed since the days of Slim
Devices, but I have to say it's been a great 2011. To have both the
Transporter resurrected as the Transporter SE (even if it's temporary,
it's nice that they are available) and have a code issue addressed so
quickly and efficiently is more than I could have hoped for.

Thanks very much Andy for finding a resolution. I appreciate the
dedication.

Complaining in this tread won't accomplish a thing, a real bug report

Work around by sending everything as pcm untill further notice...

Yes :) I also asked for the bug nr earlier in the tread nobody
replied...
But post keeps comming in this tread...

So it was not directed at anyone particular , but just an observation
that the many sufferers if this bug should do something together to
make something happen.

And yes they broke the product, says something unprintable about the
testing around these products ? Also makes you seriously wonder what
else don't work as supposed (or is subly broken at a low level like the
mp3 decoder is).
Does Logitech themselves test that the product performs to spec and
that outputs are bitperfect after each software mod ?

I've been working with support on ticket 101225-001163 and have provided
some files to test with. I've tried to upload them to the site Andy
recommended, but have not been successful. I've attached links to the
files on the Logitech Support Site. One is an excerpt from the Koln
Concert and the other is a portion of Looking for a Home from Blue
Coast Records. Both exhibit the popping and are at the lowest
compression level (0). These were created with dBpoweramp Music
Converter.

Andy, hopefully you have access to these. If not, I will try the
anonymous FTP from a different internet connection this evening.

- Only on high-res files 24/88-96
- Disabling all scrolling minimize problem
- I only noticed since fw85 (but could have been there before)
- I haven't looked into details - encoding/wav/server/etc
- I'm running through external DAC via BNC.

Turning off scrolling and all screensavers does minimize the noises.
Unfortunately, it does not eliminate them entirely. I don't know the
firmware code, but I am a programmer by trade. The code may still be
computing the values necessary to scroll, even when scrolling on the
display is turned off. I also found no effect when turning off the VU
meter on the secondary display. Again, the values needed may be
getting computed, but not displayed in any way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Popping noises with Transporter firmware 81 and 85

2010-12-25 Thread JJZolx

The big change to firmware 81 was moving the scrolling of text to the
player, so it could account for greater CPU usage. Apparently the
Transporter is borderline when playing 96kHz Flac, so any small change
could push it over the top. I'm not sure whether the scrolling changes
should affect it if you're using the Music Information Screensaver, but
maybe the plugin doesn't play nice with the new approach to scrolling.

Try disabling the plugin first. If that doesn't help you might then go
to the Transporter's display settings (using the web interface) and
change the scrolling rate. Increase the scroll pixels to 7 and
decrease the scroll rate (by increasing the value) to 0.15. I think
those were the old defaults. In any case, adjust the scroll rate until
the speed looks correct.

Why on Earth did they do that? Stealing CPU cycles from a
non-upgradable player in order to perform a task that could be done by
the server (which can be upgraded to cope with the task if necessary)
just seems daft.

Didn't Logitech understand the concept behind a Slim Device when they
bought the company?

I downgraded the firmware to 80 (still using 7.5.2 server) and the pops
went away. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm sure I won't be able
 to use firmware 80 forever.

 Things I tried before downgrading:
 Reinstall firmware (hold brightness)
Reprogrammed xilink (hold 1 while plugging in)
Factory reset (hold + while plugging in)

 Only downgrading the firmware helped.

Thank you for the information. I was about to upgrade but I definately
will not do it now. I will wait for this bug to be fixed.

Speaking of has anyone filed an actual bug yet in bugzilla ?
Otherwise it will never be fixed .

Easiest fix must be to reverse this change for transporter but keep it
for SB3/2 Boom .

The amount of logged on transporter users must be ridiculously low
compared to other players can't make a dent in the mysqueezebox.com
system ?

That means keeping the scrolling code in SBS/mysb.com but only use it
for transporters.

Ah, right - to reduce load on MySB. Now I understand. (I don't use
MySB, so this never occured to me).

Didn't Logitech understand the concept behind a Slim Device when they
 bought the company?

Yes! Smooth scrolling is very important for audiophiles :)
I need a telescope to see anything on my Transporter, not to say Touch

On the topic of firmware, I am running 3-month old beta with #84 and do
not have anything close to popping noises. Maybe I am lucky

I noticed the same issue a few nights back playing Diana Krall - Quiet
Nights 24/96, and was baffled as it'd never occurred prior. Please
advise whether the bug's been filed so I can vote for it.

2010-12-25 Thread Wombat

Since Logitech took over Slimdevices i wondered how long it takes that
no one takes care about it anymore.
Logitech should produce mice, that´s what i belief they are good at.
If anyone told me to buy a 1599€ product of Logitech back then i´d
asked him what the hell he is smoking.

Hard words in such a peasefull time, sorry. Enjoy your holidays :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Popping noises with Transporter firmware 81 and 85

2010-12-25 Thread ychng

Had the same issue with popping/clicking sounds on the transporter on
firmware 85. No problems at all with 84 before that, and the issue went
away when I reverted to 84 from 85.

Did not make a difference Ethernet or Wifi - as it shouldn't given that
CPU limitations are the cause.

Thanks again all!
